In a surprising move by the Syracuse University
governing body, the University has considered dropping the current
Academic program to concentrate on the current dismal state of the University football program. University spokesperson, Cole Trickle stated that, "The University is currently deliberating cancelling all Academic programs starting in 2009 to concentrate on the Athletic programs."
I've been reading around the SU blogs that
the University of Texas is preparing to retire Kevin
Durant's number and that, to some of the Orange bloggers, that makes no sense. While I can understand their points of view, I do not agree with them, at least not entirely.

Is Texas basketball a horrible program? That ESPN
prestige thingy is going to place them in the
Top 30 so I would guess not. So I'm at a loss as to why they are retiring the jersey of Kevin Durant , he who played but one season in Austin. Just ...
A while back I had begun to read
about what if Greg Robinson was gone. Many gave
their opinion, and now I am going to give mine. I'm going to start off by saying that the head coach I am choosing is someone I have watched over the years, since being a Tar Heel (for those of you didn't know that), I see a lot of games in "Carolina". Who am I talking about? Skip Holtz, the son of ESPN's analyst ...
"We're talking about New Jersey contractors, of course
the stadium will be done in time." Artificial turf
expert Greg Schiano's contract is getting a closer look in the Garden State. In a related story, Daryl Gross denied rumors that Greg ...
As I roamed into one of my favorite
blogs, ZAGSBLOG, I read this short blog about Greg
Schiano, the football head coach for Rutgers. The blog sent me to the front of the story, an article in The Star-Ledger. Read both of the links I gave you and then I will tell you my opinion about all of this.
Another great player from Syracuse's national championship team
is headed overseas to play this season. Joining Gerry
McNamara, who is playing in Latvia, is Josh Pace, who is going to be in Estonia this year as a member of the BC Kalev.
Before I write this post let me say
that I am one of the many (and I
should say MANY) people that thought Donte Greene should stay under the tutelage of head coach Jim Boeheim and his staff for one more year.
I've been reading around the Syracuse blogosphere and
find it weird that Northwestern being a twelve point
favorite is news. Heck, I have a feeling that by the time the game kicks off, the line will be over two touchdows (or more).
How close are we to the college football
season? So close that we are beginning to see
Las Vegas oddsmakers are begging to put out the odds on the first games of the season.
Just a few days ago, I introduced myself
as a Penn State fan when discussing college football
with someone I just met. His immediate response was “Oh, why did Penn State ever decide to join the Big Ten?, They have no rivals there.” What shocked me was that it was 2007, 15 years of Big Ten history and tradition since our inaugural season, but people still talked as if it was 1993.
Josh Pace, the former Syracuse guard who was
part of the 2003 national championship team, will play
professionally for BC Kalev in Tallinn, Estonia this upcoming season. Pace’s agent, Nate McCray of Dynasty Sports Management, said via email that ...
Even with head coach Jim Boeheim deep into
his USA Basketball commitments it doesn't look like his
coaching staff is letting anything, or should I say anyone, get past their attentive eyes.
For those of you that follow Syracuse basketball
but didn't see this (and I don't know how
you wouldn't), two nights ago, in his debut of the NBA Summer League, Donte Greene had 40 points. Yes, let me repeat that, forty!
Donte Greene declared for the NBA Draft after
just one year at Syracuse and was selected 28th
overall by the Memphis Grizzlies. He was then traded along with a 2009 2nd round pick to the Rockets for Darrell Arthur. Greene ended up signing a contract with the Rockets just five minutes before his first summer league game, where he dropped 40 points against the Phoenix Suns.
Syracuse football, spiraling to new lows under head
coach Greg Robinson
As I continued to dig over the blog
about Brandon Jennings and his going to Europe because
he didn't pass the SAT's I found another piece that has head coach Jim Boeheim talking about the situation. And just like last blog I did coach Boeheim is sharp and to the point, and just like last time, I believe him to be fully correct.
Those of you that read this blog or
know me personally know that, while I enjoy Syracuse
Men's basketball, I have sometimes been critical of head coach Jim Boeheim. Well, if I'm going to be critical of someone when I think he's wrong, I think that I should also have his back when he's right in what he does or says. Right about now is where you are going to wonder what I am babbling about...
Reading around about Syracuse I stumbled upon an
article that talked about a player that was high
on the SU program. Glenn Bryant, a 6'7" 190 lbs. power forward, who currently attends Oak Hill Academy said that he liked Syracuse because of their run and gun style and because they play zone defense.
Before I write this blog let me say
that the inspiration from it is because I read
"The Dome could be very white on September 13th" by the "Three Idiots on Sports" blog. It talks about the day when a once yearly foe, Penn State, will come into the Carrier Dome for the first time in close to two decades.
Reading about recruits coming to Syracuse and hearing
head coach Jim Boeheim talk about his SU team
and the USA team, plus the small blog about one of the Orange's ex players who is now going to be an assistant coach, made me think about another ex player who I (as well as many others) thought would have a stint in the NBA.
I know that this is a Syracuse blog,
but those that know me pretty well know that
I am one of those that does like ESPN and also one that has always been behind the Jimmy V Foundation. Now, with my father-in-law having cancer I'm even more behind the foundation that Jim Valvano began over a decade ago.
So let's quickly get up to speed on
this whole Oklahoma Football Message Board Rumor fiasco, shall
we? Wizard of Odds , help us out: James Conradt, a Nebraska fan living in Austin, finds himself in considerable trouble today. On Wednesday, Conradt ...
One thing that I have always shook my
head at when listening to Bud Poliquin is the
fact that he likes to tell anyone that is listening to the radio show he co-hosts that people who think that student-athletes that play at the college level get tired are nuts.
In The Bleachers is hosting an All-Big East
football podcast tonight at 9pm ET and yours truly
will be taking part in the festivities. Stop by , will you, and listen as I share my optimism for the upcoming season with the world. You can listen ...
On September 13 at 3:30 pm under the
teflon bubble that is the Carrier Dome, the Penn
State Nittany Lions return to Syracuse for the first time since the series ended in 1990. As a kid, Penn State was right at the top of many Syracuse fan's most ...
I remember a long time ago a coach
yelling onto the field to his offense "seize the
opportunity". The game was close, and if the team could go down the field and score they would probably win the game. It was so long ago that I don't remember if the team did in fact "seize the opportunity", but that phrase always stuck in my mind for some reason.
Kirby Dar Dar collected nearly 3,000 all-purpose yards
during his football career at Syracuse in the early
'90s, and later spent three NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins. As Post-Standard columnist Bud Poliquin recounts, Dar Dar quickly became a ...
For Syracuse University basketball fans, 2003 was the
pinnacle - it simpy can not get any better
than winning a National Championship. However, for Michael Lee - better known as the guy who had his shot swatted away by Hakim Warrick, things were a ...
While we would never encourage gambling of any
kind (if you need to be encouraged you're a
wuss and shouldn't be betting anyway), the web site Sports Odds did a story today on the betting prospects for the 2008 SU football team. As you can imagine, for Syracuse fans the story is not good. In the preview they note that Bet US has the odds of the Orange winning the Big East Conference at ...
Even if it's up in the rafters, can
the legend of the 44 come down once more
and give this Syracuse football team the jolt it needs to turn their destiny around? Maybe I watched "The Express" trailer too many times. Maybe I think of that magical number and think of years past and the fame it carried. Maybe I think that Syracuse can find another great back to rival the 44's of old.
I have to say this: "I cannot wait
to see the movie "The Express", about Ernie Davis."
I think that the movie will go way beyond the achievements on the field of a running back that broke records as well as color barriers. I am all for the premiere to be held in Syracuse and when the DVD comes out I am going to be one of the first to have it, that is how much this movie means to me.
I know that if you go to a
lot of the Syracuse blogs, such as The Daily
Orange or Troy Nunes is an absolute Magician or Syracuse.com, you have already read over and over that Mike Williams hasn't enrolled at Onondaga Community College for the summer semester.
A few weeks back we got the tantalizing
news that Mike Williams' suspension was cleared up and
he would be returning to the Orange for the upcoming season. Of course, you should always check the source. Oddly enough, the source WAS Williams. And ...
AKRON, Ohio – Jonny Flynn is a rarity.
In a day and age when everyone wants playing
