Their chances are quickly dwindling: Three games and counting to determine TCU's hopes of playing in the BCS national championship game. One of those games (Florida State at No. 1 Florida) is today; the other two are next week in league championship games. According to some "experts" out there, there should never be a non-BCS team in contention for the national championship. Apparently, these teams from non-BCS conferences such as the Mountain West, the Western Athletic Conference, and Conference USA are undeserving of any accolades presented to them. Experts, I present to you the 2009 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. This team has defeated three current Top-25 teams and two BCS conference teams (30-14 over Virginia and 14-10 over No. 15 Clemson, both of the ACC) with wins over No. 15 Clemson and No. 18 BYU coming on the road, the BYU win coming by a score of 38-7, and a defeat of No. 22 Utah at home, 55-28. The Horned Frogs don't make the same, ahem, "mistake" that Boise State makes, either. Some members of the media say that Boise State doesn't win convincingly enough. Everyone has known about TCU's tough defense for years. TCU coach Gary Patterson has made fast, strong defense his signature. But this year, TCU is being recognized for something else: unstoppable offense. Yes, it is hard to believe. Yet for most TCU fans, the plays being run on offense are mostly familiar. Small changes have been made here and there, but the offense has remained to true its core. TCU has long been a run-first team. This fits into Patterson's overall philosophy. The offense can do two good things for Patterson's defense: Eat clock and score points. Coach Patterson has long held to the win-by-one-point idea, which has largely held true for the Frogs. Under Coach Patterson, TCU has lost only one game ever when the opponent scored fewer than 17 points, at Utah last year. The most conceivable path to this game involves Texas losing to Texas A&M at Ryan Field, but still winning the Big 12 Championship game, while TCU wins out, but falls short of making the national championship because of being hopped by Cincinnati or a one-loss team like Georgia Tech. The Aggies have held a strange power over Colt McCoy in his four-year career with the Longhorns. Along with the Kansas State Wildcats, A&M is the only Big 12 team against whom McCoy has a losing record (1-2). Utah was given the task of playing Alabama, a team one win away from the BCS title game, practically on the road in New Orleans. So what did Utah do? They embarrassed the Crimson Tide. They beat them from start to finish. That doesn't make the BCS happy. The BCS has had two strategies to their automatic qualifying teams, strategy one: put them in a bowl that a victory won't make an impact.
