Oklahoma Sooners Take Huge Step Back Against Texas Tech Red Raiders

In their 2008 matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Oklahoma Sooners scored their first touchdown six minutes into the game. It marked the first of nine scores in a 65-21 victory .
In Saturday's 41-13 Tech win , OU picked up its only touchdown of the game in the 53rd minute.
With one game remaining in a frustrating season, the embarrassing beatdown suffered in Lubbock showed that OU's offensive about-face from last year is all but complete. Think of it as about a 165-degree turnaround—heading the wrong way, of course.
A drop-off in production from last season's prodigious totals wouldn't have been shocking, especially given all the offensive talent standing on the Sooners' sideline. Still, who could have foreseen such a dramatic collapse?
The vaunted Sooner defense certainly deserves its fair share of the blame for Saturday's boondoggle. However, the putrid performance on the other side of the ball had a large hand in the D's tough day. Time and again, OU's failure to generate ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Texas Longhorns

Don't count on a Saturday snoozefest

                    Matt Hayes

These are the bland Saturdays when no one is safe.
No, really.
How often have we seen this is the past: the relatively uneventful developing into the remarkably significant.
Even No. 1 Florida, playing host to cupcake Florida International, isn't immune at this late stage of the season.
"We know what's on the line," Florida linebacker Ryan Stamper said. "We're going hard."
Maybe it's some cosmic balance in response to the wild weekends of the last three years, but just when you think 2009 couldn't be more predictable we give you these six wild possibilities (ranked in order of likelihood it will happen) that could develop Saturday:
  1. A Stanford player wins the Heisman Trophy
How it can happen: Hey, it has happened before (Jim Plunkett, 1970), why not again? No BCS league tailback has more yards (1,395) or touchdowns (19) than Toby Gerhart, who has surged to the top of Heisman ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, Stanford Cardinal, Kansas State Wildcats

No. 3 Texas faces Kansas team in turmoil (AP)

When Colt McCoy started his first game at Texas in 2006, the second pass of his career was a sign of things to come: a 60-yard touchdown in a rout of North Texas. He still calls it one of his fondest memories at Royal-Memorial Stadium. On Saturday night, McCoy will trot onto the home-field turf for the last time with a chance to grab a record of a lifetime.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Colt McCoy, Texas Longhorns, Kansas Jayhawks

Turnover Battle Crucial for Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders

  Date : Nov. 21 Time : 12:30 p.m. EST Venue : Jones AT&T Stadium (Lubbock, Texas) Vegas Line : OU -6.5
Road trips to Texas Tech have been a nightmare for the Oklahoma Sooners since 2005, when some questionable officiating snatched a win out of OU's hands .
The next visit to Jones AT&T Stadium in 2007 saw the Red Raiders knock Sam Bradford out of the game in the first quarter, as OU's talented quarterback sustained a concussion while trying make a tackle following a fumble.
Little-used second stringer Joey Halzle gave a game effort in trying to rally the Sooners late, but it just wasn't enough.
The Sooners appear to have a good shot at turning their Lubbock luck around this season, though, as Tech is struggling down the stretch to get consistent play from their quarterbacks.
And we all know that if coach Mike Leach's air raid attack isn't popping, the Red Raiders are an average team at best.
For OU to reverse the curse, pay attention to:

Jim Harbaugh's first recruiting trip as Stanford's football coach was to Texas to visit Andrew Luck even though it would be more than a year before the quarterback could arrive on campus. Harbaugh visited three other quarterbacks on that trip but liked Luck best of all to be the quarterback to build a program around.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Stanford Cardinal, Jim Harbaugh, Texas Longhorns

McCoy looking to set QB record for wins (AP)

Colt McCoy left the tiny town of Tuscola with dreams of being Texas' next great quarterback. Lingering below the self-confidence were words that stung his heart. Too small. Too slow. Weak arm. Those were his friends saying that. Great small-town player, they said, but Texas and the Big 12 were places for the big boys, not a player from the lower divisions of high school.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Colt McCoy

Big 12 South 2010 Preview

With the Big 12 South wrapped up and Texas pretty much penciled into the national championship, I felt the need to supply Bleacher Report with a look to the future.

The Big 12 South in 2010 will see a changing of the guard as Texas will lose the winningest QB in NCAA history, assuming he gets by the rest of their weak schedule (news flash...he will).

Texas' fall from grace will not be that far, given the still dominant recruiting of Mack Brown. According to Scout.com, OU and UT are No. 1 and 2 in the 2010 recruiting class, respectively.

Other appearances in the top 25 are Oklahoma State at No. 10, Texas A&M at No. 13, and Texas Tech and No. 22.

The following slide show will feature not only the recruiting class for next year, but also feature some key returning players in ranking the six teams in the Big 12 South.
What We Learned: Mangino Situation Shows That Coaches Are Losing Pull

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Tuesday's buzz means to college football.
Players taking charge
The details of the dissension involving Kansas football and coach Mark Mangino will shake out soon enough. The good bet is against Mangino—when did a "personnel matter" ever turn out positive for the personnel involved? For now, it's safe to say this: Whatever's going on at Kansas highlights the continuing power shift away from coaches.

Mark Mangino is feeling the heat in Lawrence, from several sources.
For years, the guys in charge of the program owned their terrain; not even athletic directors had the courage to butt into the day-to-day affairs down the hall in the football offices. Now, it seems everyone has a vote in the way things go.

Boosters speak with their wallets. Recruits speak to the media. Players speak with threats to transfer. Fans speak on message boards and talk radio and all the rest.
At Kansas, Mangino has neither fostered a dominant program ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Stanford Cardinal, Texas Longhorns, Mark Mangino

Texas Vs. TCU: Who Has The Best State's Best Football Team?

There's a slim, albeit encouraging, chance that Texas and TCU will meet in the Fiesta Bowl this season.
The most conceivable path to this game involves Texas losing to Texas A&M at Ryan Field, but still winning the Big 12 Championship game, while TCU wins out, but falls short of making the national championship because of being hopped by Cincinnati or a one-loss team like Georgia Tech.
The Aggies have held a strange power over Colt McCoy in his four-year career with the Longhorns. Along with the Kansas State Wildcats, A&M is the only Big 12 team against whom McCoy has a losing record (1-2).
The Aggies have upset the Longhorns twice: once during McCoy's freshman year (during which Colt McCoy suffered the most egregious late hit I've ever seen , resulting in the ejection of Kellen Heard) and again in Colt's sophomore year, when the 12th-ranked Longhorns were absolutely steamrolled at College Station.
In TCU's case, as I've argued elsewhere , there's no way the voters allow the Horned ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, TCU Horned Frogs

What We Learned: Things about to get worse for Michigan

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes what Monday's buzz means to college football.
A turn for the worse
For those who think Michigan's slide since September has hurt coach Rich Rodriguez in Ann Arbor, it's about to get much, much worse.
The Detroit News reported that the Michigan program in 2008 failed to file required logs used to keep track of how many hours players practiced and worked out. An internal university audit revealed the CARA (countable athletically related activities) logs—which the university uses to stay in compliance with NCAA rules—were missing.
The NCAA, of course, is investigating allegations made by players that Rodriguez and his staff worked players beyond the NCAA's 20-hour limit. The missing logs won't bode well for Rodriguez—with the NCAA or the university. Connect the dots, and it starts to look ugly for Rodriguez—a lot worse than the six losses in the last seven games. When he left West Virginia two years ago, he and his staff were accused of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Louisville Cardinals, Texas Longhorns, Rich Rodriguez

BCS breakdown: TCU's big win further clouds picture

Think about the statement, and take in the enormity of it all.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham on TCU: "I have been a coach for five years, and that is the best team I've faced." Utah has faced a handful of BCS teams in Whittingham's tenure, but the one that stands out was Alabama in last season's Sugar Bowl. The same Alabama team that was a handful of perfect throws from Florida quarterback Tim Tebow from playing in the national title game.
We all know what would've happened in that game—and we all know what Utah did to the Tide in the Sugar Bowl. That only gives more weight to Whittingham's comments after TCU's dismantling of Utah—and further clouds the non-BCS question:
Does unbeaten TCU, a member of the non-BCS Mountain West Conference but playing better than anyone in the nation, deserve to play in the BCS national championship game? "All we can do," said TCU quarterback Andy Dalton, "is continue to play as well as we can and see what happens."

Top teams roll; storied programs take plummet

College football, like much of the 2009 season, held to form Saturday. No. 1 Florida , No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Alabama kept the national title chase a three-team derby with typical wins.

No. 4 TCU looked like a sure BCS bowl team by waxing No. 16 Utah 55-28.

"If the nation didn't think that this was enough style points, then I don't know what is," coach Gary Patterson told reporters. "We're just going to go about our business."

But outside TCU's statement win, the biggest developments of Saturday's college football games included the handful of storied programs that continued their shocking slides:

Notre Dame
What happened: Anemic offense for three quarters put the Irish in an 18-point fourth-quarter hole at Pittsburgh. The No. 8 Panthers held on, 27-22, and eliminated ND from reaching a BCS bowl .
What's next? Find somebody with Brian Kelly's cell phone number. Even with a rally late, this ND squad ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns

Sporting News' Derek Samson covers the best and worst performances of Week 11 in college football.

Gameballs
  1. Danario Alexander, Missouri WR. One of the nation's most underrated wideouts, Alexander caught 10 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the rout of Kansas State. In his past two games, Alexander has 414 yards receiving.

  2. Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss RB. One of the nation's most underrated runners, McCluster had 282 rushing yards and finished with 324 all-purpose yards, setting a slew of records at both Mississippi (good ones) and Tennessee (bad ones). McCluster scored on runs of 15, 23, 32 and 71 yards in Ole Miss' first victory against the Volunteers since 1983.

  3. Toby Gerhart, Stanford RB. This senior rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 25 Stanford can claim it does in fact own the Coliseum after punishing Southern Cal 55-21 .

Texas Tech Vs Oklahoma State College Football Picks

This Saturday, a good game will take place in the Big 12 when Texas Tech and Oklahoma St. square off. The Cowboys are hoping to to avenge a terrible loss at the hands of the Red Raiders from last year, when they lost by over 30 points in what was supposed to be an even contest.
At the time the Red Raiders were ranked No. 2 overall and the Cowboys were No. 8. This year, the roles have been reversed as the Cowboys are ranked No. 17 and the Red Raiders are unranked. If you are looking for Free College Football Picks what should we expect out of this contest?
The Red Raiders had to overcome the loss of quarterback Graham Harrell and wide receiver Michael Crabtree. Crabtree went on to the NFL after a very productive two years at Texas Tech. While the spread offense is still moving along, it hasn’t been quite the same for them as it was with those two.
They come into this game with a 6-3 record and looking to prove that they can still compete with the big boys of the conference. They have had a bit ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Texas Longhorns

For a guy who one night four years ago looked a bit overwhelmed by the bright lights of Texas football, Colt McCoy sure has won a lot of college games. Forty-one, to be exact. And if No. 2 Texas (9-0, 5-0 Big 12) beats Baylor (4-5, 1-4) on Saturday, McCoy will tie Georgia's David Greene for the most victories by a major college quarterback.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Colt McCoy

FBS: Lacking Dominant '09 Team

There has been a lot of talk about which non-BCS school will make a run at the title and if big conference teams can hold them off. The truth is, the two teams that play for the national title may or may not be the best two teams in college football, including a Texas-Florida championship game. This year, the controversy comes from the fact that there are no great teams, just a bunch of really good ones.

  My top three

1. Texas Longhorns
The Longhorn defense has been very stifling this year, holding opponents to just over 12 points per game. With not much of a running game, Colt McCoy has had to throw the ball more than in previous years. He has completed a very high percentage, but has also thrown as many interceptions as games played. Not very impressive statistics if you ask me.
I know in years past the Red River Rivalry has been a game of huge BCS implications, but this year Oklahoma was depleted offensively and the Longhorns still struggled to beat them. They have shown to be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns

Texas Longhorn Quarterbacks: A Journey Into Two Dimensions of Fame

The Texas Longhorns have a proud and storied past on the gridiron.

Over the decades UT football has proudly presented rugged linemen, dependable runners, and spectacular quarterbacks to a variety of all-star teams.

When the jolly crowd in Austin can put all three together, a championship is often the result.

As the current occupant of the No. 3 position in the BCS ranking system, the situation appears ripe for another Texas opportunity to lasso the national title.

If the Longhorns are succesful, expect much of the subsequent discussion among fans to center on Colt McCoy and his place as the greatest quarterback in UT history.

For full disclosure, please note this writer predicted on the Bleacher Report in August Texas would win the BCS Title this season and McCoy would win the Heisman Trophy.

Let there be no question regarding the high regard for Colt McCoy in this corner.

But, the University of Texas football tradition is far more than young McCoy. Respect for the hallowed halls of Austin and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Houston Cougars, Colt McCoy, Bowl Championship Series

Chris Dufresne's top 25 rankings

Is that the wrong school from Texas at the top?
                         >

Rankman is starting to wonder whether he has had the wrong Texas at No. 1 all season, what with Texas Christian having won at Virginia and Clemson and Brigham Young this year and Texas having won at Wyoming. But one thing you learn in this business is never look back . . . unless you're Oregon's defense trying to chase down Stanford's Toby Gerhart. We salute Navy's poll debut this week after the Midshipmen punched Notre Dame in the midsection. And here's a Rankman first: having to come up with a comment . . . for Temple.

Texas A&M Aggies Announce Their Top 15 2010 Recruiting Class

Nov. 11 was a great day for the Texas A&M basketball program. As I mention in my 2009-2010 preview of the team, the depth of their front line will not be there like it has been in recent years.
What is coach Mark Turgeon's response? Sign four power forwards, three of which are ranked nationally by recruiting magazines and ESPN.
According to ESPN college basketball analyst Bob Gibbons:
"The four players that the Aggies signed have positioned them to have a surefire top-15 recruiting class," Gibbons said. "When all the dust settles, it could be ranked even higher. No school in America has assembled a class with this much size, length, versatility, and athleticism. Mark Turgeon and his staff are known for doing things the right way and continue to bring top talent to Texas A&M."
Each of the four recruits is 6'8" or taller, and with three of them still in high school and one who graduated in 2009, they are still growing.
Turgeon is very proud of this recruiting class, as he should be. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Longhorns

From Big 12 snub to BCS berth for TCU? (AP)

When the Southwest Conference broke up after the 1995 season, TCU set out on an undesired conference-hopping journey. Half of the Texas teams from the old SWC -- Texas, Texas A&M;, Texas Tech and even Baylor, a private Christian school like TCU -- were invited into the Big 12, which has grown into one of the nation's best leagues.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns
