What We Learned: Mike Leach entertains again

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes what Monday's buzz means to college football.
Friends in high places
As a devout college football nut, here's yet another reason to dislike the NFL: Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a Michigan alumnus, told The Associated Press that if coach Rich Rodriguez, "has a bad year next year, he'll have a lot more pressure."
This is what happens when you give $100 million to a school, when it renames the business school in your honor and when, yeah, you've suddenly earned clout. Ross said he thinks Rodriguez is a "great man, and he's been a proven winner wherever he's been."
That's great, Steve. End it there. Don't add more fuel to the vocal fringe element that wants to run Rod after two years. No matter what Ross said—he could've said Rodriguez will be the coach at Michigan for 20 years—the only thing people read and here is "if he has a bad year next year …"
Understand this, people: you can't completely change the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Mike Leach, Michigan Wolverines, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Rich Rodriguez, Urban Meyer

Conference Call: Oklahoma State on the rise in Big 12

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
5. Big 12
1. Texas
2. Nebraska
3. Oklahoma State
4. Texas Tech
5. Oklahoma
6. Missouri
7. Kansas State
8. Texas A&M
9. Iowa State
10. Kansas
11. Baylor
12. Colorado
Rising
Oklahoma State: 'Pokes better hope QB Zac Robinson is ready to play this weekend in Bedlam, considering what's on the line: beating Oklahoma for first time since 2002 and earning a BCS bid.
Falling
Baylor: Bears have been lost on the field since the injury to star QB Robert Griffin. The change in quarterbacks hurt; the loss of leadership was even worse.

Oklahoma Sooners Take Huge Step Back Against Texas Tech Red Raiders

In their 2008 matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Oklahoma Sooners scored their first touchdown six minutes into the game. It marked the first of nine scores in a 65-21 victory .
In Saturday's 41-13 Tech win , OU picked up its only touchdown of the game in the 53rd minute.
With one game remaining in a frustrating season, the embarrassing beatdown suffered in Lubbock showed that OU's offensive about-face from last year is all but complete. Think of it as about a 165-degree turnaround—heading the wrong way, of course.
A drop-off in production from last season's prodigious totals wouldn't have been shocking, especially given all the offensive talent standing on the Sooners' sideline. Still, who could have foreseen such a dramatic collapse?
The vaunted Sooner defense certainly deserves its fair share of the blame for Saturday's boondoggle. However, the putrid performance on the other side of the ball had a large hand in the D's tough day. Time and again, OU's failure to generate ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Texas Longhorns

Turnover Battle Crucial for Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders

 Date : Nov. 21 Time : 12:30 p.m. EST Venue : Jones AT&T Stadium (Lubbock, Texas) Vegas Line : OU -6.5
Road trips to Texas Tech have been a nightmare for the Oklahoma Sooners since 2005, when some questionable officiating snatched a win out of OU's hands .
The next visit to Jones AT&T Stadium in 2007 saw the Red Raiders knock Sam Bradford out of the game in the first quarter, as OU's talented quarterback sustained a concussion while trying make a tackle following a fumble.
Little-used second stringer Joey Halzle gave a game effort in trying to rally the Sooners late, but it just wasn't enough.
The Sooners appear to have a good shot at turning their Lubbock luck around this season, though, as Tech is struggling down the stretch to get consistent play from their quarterbacks.
And we all know that if coach Mike Leach's air raid attack isn't popping, the Red Raiders are an average team at best.
For OU to reverse the curse, pay attention to:
