Do The Washington Huskies Have a Chance Against Best-Less Cal?

Make no mistake about it, the Washington Huskies' run defense has been atrocious over the last couple years. Statistically, they rank in the cellar of the Pac-10 in almost all defensive categories, but especially the run defense. Conventional wisdom would have suggested that Cal running back would put up gaudy numbers against the Huskies on the final game of the season. However, Best is ruled out of play by head coach Jeff Tedford. What happens to the Huskies' chances now? First an foremost, there is a greater chance that the Huskies can force the game more onto the shoulders of Kevin Riley, who has been inconsistent. If you can force mistakes out of Riley you can increase your chance of beating Cal. Unfortunately, Shane Vereen has proven to be a reliable backup, and could potentially put up gaudy numbers himself. Steve Sarkisian's First Season Validated by Victory in the Apple Cup

Many of the more rabid Washington Huskies fans were upset with the losing streak going into the 102nd Apple Cup on Saturday. In many ways there was a little too much optimistic feeling around the program after the win over USC. The core of the team was the same as the winless 2008 squad. The 30-0 victory over the Cougars righted the ship, and will help the Huskies transition into the offseason. It was the first shutout since 1964 in the series, and the first time that the Huskies shut out an opponent in 12 years. It also stopped the Cougars from achieving a third straight victory over the Huskies, something they've never done. The Huskies can feel really good about this win, even in spite of the fact that the win is mitigated by how bad the Cougars look this season. The Evolution of Washington Huskies' Quincy Pondexter

The Washington Huskies looked solid last night despite former Husky Adrian Oliver torching them for a good 30 points. Quincy Pondexter had some interesting things to say about Oliver leaving the Husky program. Check out his quote here . Speaking of Pondexter, he has impressed me throughout these first four games. He has picked up right where he left off after his stellar play in the NCAA tournament in March. I don't know how he's reached this level of play, but there is no doubt that he is a different player from last season. In these last four games, he's put up point totals of 12, 25, 29 and 30. Last night, to go along with his 30 points, he had 15 rebounds. Looking at the stat line, I could have mistaken him for Jon Brockman circa 2009. I did not know Pondexter had the capability to grab 15 rebounds, but he has been able to do it. It looks like this team will be another classically dominant rebounding team, even with the loss of Brockman. Obviously, the season is still young, ...
