"This One Time, At Camp Randall, Ohio State Beat Wisconsin 20-17..."

OK, maybe that's a cliche line to start this blog, but I figured it was worth a shot.
Ohio State's Big Ten title chances are still alive, thanks to the rushing efforts of Chris Wells and Terrelle Pryor, the inconsistent play of Wisconsin QB Allen Evridge, and some questionable offensive play calling by the Wisconsin coaching staff. While Terrelle Pryor's touchdown run proved to be the game-winner for Ohio State, I would argue that Chris Wells was the player of the game for Ohio State .
Without Chris Wells' power running, especially some of his lethal stiff-arms that he applied to unfortunate Wisconsin defenders, Ohio State would not have been in this game. While Boom Herron, Maurice Wells, and Brandon Saine are decent ball players, none of the three can provide a power element such as Chris Wells. I respected the way Terrelle Pryor kept battling throughout this game. Considering the venue, as well as the physical style of play Wisconsin is known for, it would have been easy for Pryor to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Terrelle Pryor, Chris Wells

No. 12 Ohio St. remains class of Big Ten (AP)

Terrelle Pryor kept a perfect record as a starter. Chris "Beanie" Wells kept things loose. That's all Ohio State (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) needed to stay at the top of the class in the conference with a 20-17 win over Wisconsin on Saturday night. The Buckeyes moved up to No. 12 in the poll Sunday. "A lot of people have been questioning our mental toughness," Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis said.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Terrelle Pryor, Wisconsin Badgers, James Laurinaitis

Ohio State/Wisconsin: What We Learned

Ohio State played another game under the bright lights of (regional) national television last night, for once a game that lived up to preseason hype. A back and forth, hard-fought battle between two perennial Big Ten powers came down to the wire, as Ohio State's Malcolm Jenkins finally sealed the Buckeye victory with a less than a minute to play in regulation.
Buckeye fans everywhere woke up this morning and had an extra-large glass of Terrelle Pryor kool-aid with their scrambled eggs. After watching TP march the team down the field and score the game-winning touchdown with 66 seconds left in the game, these fans think they've learned a lot about not only Mr. Pryor, but also the entire team as a whole.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, however, let's take a lot at what we did learned last night:

  - Terrelle Pryor is a leader.
This one may seem pretty obvious. Some have said they could tell Pryor was a leader after his first two starts, but I believe one couldn't really tell how ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Terrelle Pryor, Jim Tressel, Chris Wells

Buckeyes-Badgers: Pryor's Late Drive Leaves Badgers as Roadkill in His Wake

Wow, what a game.
What a freshman.
In a battle of two of the Big-10's best teams, the Buckeyes relied on freshman phenom Terrelle Pryor to lead them to victory in front of 81,000 rabid fans in Madison, WI. On the first drive of the game, Pryor and Ohio State tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells made it look easy against the Badger defense: a six-play, 71-yard drive capped by an impressive Wells 33-yard run to pay dirt.
From there, the Wisconsin defense stiffened up, and the longest drive the rest of the half for the Buckeyes was just 24 yards; which allowed the Badgers to hold a 10-7 lead at halftime.
There were numerous big hits in the game, including a big one late in the first half by three Badgers all at the same time against Dane Sanzenbacher; which in turned caused him to fumble and the Badgers recovered.
Daniel "Boom" Herron also had his clock cleaned and seemed to have a concussion when he left the game. This game was also played without the Wisconsin band in attendance, after ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Wisconsin Badgers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Terrelle Pryor

Wisconsin-Ohio State: Badgers Fall Flat At Home

After a head-scratching loss to the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor last week, the Wisconsin Badgers lost another close one in the Big Ten to "Thee" Ohio State University 20-17.
The Buckeyes scored first and scored quickly when Chris "Beanie" Wells scampered in from 33 yards out, and it looked like a blowout early in front of the Badger faithful.
The Wisconsin offense looked out of sync in the first quarter, as two of their three drives in that frame ended in punts, with the other ending as a result of a fumble by quarterback Allan Evridge.
In a 7-0 hole starting the second quarter, the Badger offense came alive as they scored 10 points to Ohio State's zero.
The Buckeyes punted early in the second and Wisconsin reeled off a 15 play, 91-yard drive which spanned over eight minutes, and resulted in an Evridge touchdown pass to tight end Mickey Turner.
Wisconsin played tough defense and got the ball back in their possession. Then Philip Welsh tacked on a 20-yard field goal ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Wisconsin Badgers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Bret Bielema, Michigan Wolverines

JoePa in pain, coaches from press box

Joe Paterno’s body is starting to break down.

Penn State’s 81-year-old coaching legend, who is in pain from a right hip injury that has limited his mobility, coached the Nittany Lions to 20-6 victory over Purdue today from the press box at Ross-Ade Stadium.

This was the first time Paterno, who was hurt while attempting an onside kick in practice Aug. 28, did not start the game on the sidelines during his storied career. Two weeks ago, he spent the second half of State’s 45-3 victory over Temple coaching from the Beaver Stadium press box.

Paterno did make it down to the sidelines to shake the hand of Purdue coach Joe Tiller - who is retiring at the end of the year - when the game ended, but it was a challenge because he is also suffering from arthritis.

“I’ve taken more pills the last two months than I have the rest of my life,” Paterno said.

The Nittany Lions travel to Wisconsin next Saturday.

The University of Wisconsin marching band has been suspended indefinitely while allegations of hazing, alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct are investigated.

The band won't play Saturday during a nationally televised football game between the No. 18 Badgers and No. 14 Ohio State at Camp Randall Stadium.

The university made the announcement at a hastily called news conference Friday night, saying the behavior is consistent with conduct that put the band on probation in 2006.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Wisconsin Badgers, Ohio State Buckeyes

This One Time, at Banned Camp: Wisconsin Band Suspended for Ohio State Game

In what some are calling "The Shocker," the entire University of Wisconsin Marching Band is going to be spending some time at Banned Camp this fall.
Amid charges of sexual misconduct, the entire University of Wisconsin Band will not be on hand when the Ohio State Buckeyes visit Camp Randall for the Saturday Night showdown on national TV.
Charges of boozing and banging are not new to the band. Back in 2006 several band member's actions had the band put on suspension. Co-eds were "Badgered" into semi-nude dancing, forced lesbian kissing, and sucking on vibrators.
While this conduct is staple on college campuses across America, they are no-no's as hazing rituals for Wisconsin's band. With the college game, on TV, going the route of being over-analyzed I have to there will be little impact for the fans but could the suspension have an impact on the spirit of team? That fact remains to be seen.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers

Finally.
That was all I could think as a good friend of mine and I stumbled to the DC train stop. With an ear-to-ear grin plastered on my face, full of beer and good food, all I could do was repeat that word, ever so beautiful to our die-hard Michigan ears.
Finally, Steven Threet emerged as a capable leader on offense.
Finally, the defense played to its potential and won us a game.
Finally, my Wolverines showed some guts and poise facing a superior opponent.
Finally.

College Football Week 6 Pick 'em

The alst few weeks I've been struggling, but I smell a comeback and if all goes well I'll go 7-1 this week (read more and you'll find out).
Here are my picks for the CU Independent for week six. (I'm giving you guys a preview since they won't be published on our site till Saturday morning.) Overall 20-12, Last week 5-3
  (23) Oregon 23, (9) USC 42 The Trojans are not going to lose twice in two weeks to Oregon teams; they’ll take care of business against the Ducks. However, Oregon will win one thing this weekend, the fashion contest. The Ducks have the best uniforms in College Football, and you can quote me on that. (14) Ohio State 23, (18) Wisconsin 24 Two teams that don’t like each other, battle in one of the biggest Big Ten games this season. I like the Badgers to upset the Buckeyes with a late score. (13) Auburn 31, (19) Vanderbilt 27 Auburn proved that they’re for real this season, but they’ll have a tough game against Vanderbilt, who is looking for some ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Wisconsin Badgers, Dan Hawkins, Oregon Ducks

Why Ohio State Will Beat Wisconsin

While everybody seems to be on the Wisconsin bandwagon for this game, I’m going the other way.
Now of course, I have to imagine y'all exclaiming in unison, “WHY?”
Oh, you want to know, do you? Ah, then allow me to explain.
Right here in this sentence I could flood you with superlatives about their do-everything, can’t-miss, all-world quarterback, but that isn’t it.
Beanie Wells? What about him? That ain’t it either. They do have massive beef up front on both sides, and they probably have the best linebacker in the upcoming draft, but that stuff don’t sway me none.
So what is this secret weapon? Well, first I have to preempt the howling that is sure to erupt in Gainesville, Baton Rouge, Knoxville, Athens, and all points north, east, west and south. Y'all hold it down out there.
The Ohio State Buckeyes might be blessed with the best fans in the NATION.
Yep, I said it: the best fans in the nation.
Ohio State-Wisconsin: Can Buckeyes Survive Badgers' "House of Pain"?

Game Six: Wisconsin Badgers Location: Camp Randall Stadium (Madison, WI) 8 PM EST, ABC Head Coach: Bret Bielema
Wisconsin Players Who Were Recruited By Ohio State
TE Travis Beckum, RB John Clay, OL Josh Oglesby, LB Elijah Hodge.
Lesser Extent: OL Jake Bscherer, OL Bill Nagy, WR Kyle Jefferson, DB Shane Carter.
Wisconsin Rushing Offense vs. Ohio State Defense
Here is THE KEY to Ohio State winning or losing the game: Can they shut down, or limit, Wisconsin's running game? If Wisconsin can control the line of scrimmage offensively, Ohio State will be worn down and will lose the game. Wisconsin's effective running game is also the key to play-action passing.
Considering how Ohio University and USC ran so effectively on Ohio State, you will understand why I am emphasizing this for Ohio State defensively.
Keep this in mind—behind RB P.J. Hill (5'11", 236 lbs.) is RB Zach Brown (5'11", 207 lbs.), who played well against Ohio State last year.

Game Six: Wisconsin Badgers Location: Camp Randall Stadium (Madison, WI) 8PM EST, ABC Head Coach: Bret Bielema Wisconsin Players Who Were Recruited By Ohio State: TE Travis Beckum, RB John Clay, OL Josh Oglesby, LB Elijah Hodge. Lesser Extent - OL Jake Bscherer, OL Bill Nagy, WR Kyle Jefferson, DB Shane Carter.
Wisconsin Rushing Offense vs Ohio State Defense
Here is THE KEY to Ohio State winning or losing the game—can they shut down, or limit, Wisconsin's running game?
If Wisconsin can control the line of scrimmage offensively, Ohio State will be worn down and will lose the game. Wisconsin's effective running game is also the key to play-action passing. Considering how Ohio University and USC ran so effectively on Ohio State, you will understand why I am emphasizing this for Ohio State defensively.

Ohio State Football 2K8 Week Six: Poisonous Nuts Versus Rabid Badgers

Source Don't have much time for a write-up this week, but here are a few thoughts about last week's game versus Minnesota. 1. Beanie Wells + Terrelle Pryor = EPIC WIN! 2. When in doubt about your bowl aspirations, have faith that other marquee teams are just as capable of losing games as you are. 3. I know by the time the fourth quarter rolled around the score was Ohio State 34, Minnesota 6, but why on earth weren't the Buckeyes' third stringers able to stop Adam Weber?
Here are some links to check out courtesy of the fine writers at Bleacher Report. Gray Ghost (an avid UGA fan) offers you some Bulldog-flavored humble pie. Unsure what certain football terms mean? Lisa Horne explains them to you. Justin Hearn analyzes five up-and-coming teams in the Big Ten that will give Ohio State trouble in the future. Chip Minnich goes more in-depth about the defensive issues still plaguing Ohio State. There is no theme song this week because a) I didn't have time to think about one and b) I ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin-Michigan: Badgers Can't Escape 'The Big House' of Horrors

It was a tale of two halves in the Big Ten opener featuring the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers against the rebuilding Michigan Wolverines.
It was a day in which the upset bug was grabbing hold of several top teams around the nation and wouldn't let go.
The upset bug first popped up in Corvallis, Oregon on Thursday night when No. 1 USC fell to the unranked Oregon State Beavers. It then made its way to the East Coast and took out No. 4 Florida (Ole' Miss 31-30), No. 16 Wake Forest (Navy 24-17), No. 20 Clemson (Maryland 20-17), and No. 23 East Carolina (Houston 41-24).
No. 15 Auburn put up a tough fight and escaped with a 14-12 victory over Tennessee.
To Wisconsin, the bug would do no different. The unranked and laughable Wolverines walked away with a 27-25 upset victory over a Top Ten team.
The Badgers started the game with an impressive drive, getting inside the ten yard-line, but Philip Welsh missed a 21-yard field goal.
Wisconsin got the ball back quickly ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Wisconsin Badgers

Well-Rested Wolverines and Badgers Square Off

I had a nice long preview and prediction wrote on here but Bleacher Report was having problems right when I was ready to publish it and erased everything I had written. So this is going to be nice and short.
First off, congrats to Oregon State for beating top-ranked USC last night. It just goes to show the 35-3 win over Ohio State was not a reflection of how good USC is but rather how bad Ohio State is.
  No. 3 Wisconsin (3-0) at Michigan (1-2)
3:30 EDT Saturday at Michigan Stadium
  Line: Wisconsin by 6
What I had written can basically be summed up like this, if Michigan can convert third downs better than what they have been (24 percent through three games) and keep P.J. Hill from dominating, they'll have a chance.
I don't think they'll be able to and will lose. Hill has some pent-up frustration when it comes to playing the Wolverines (68 yards in two career games versus Michigan) and is looking forward to beating them down.
This is a much tougher opponent than any Michigan has seen ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Southern California Trojans, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Oregon State Beavers

Michigan-Wisconsin: Rivalry's Recent History Marked By Close Games

The Big Ten season is upon the Michigan Wolverines, who welcome a familiar foe to the Big House this weekend.
Wisconsin is not thought of as one of Michigan's rivals, but they certainly have made a case for themselves to be considered one of the Wolverines' toughest competitors.
Although Michigan has dominated the all-time series, games between the Wolverines and Badgers have been really close over the years—especially within the past 10 years.
Since the 1998 season, the average margin of victory in eight games between the two have been 8.75 points—and that's mostly due to three games decided by 16, 16, and 17 points.
Five of those games were decided by seven points or less.
The last two years have seen the 16-point difference, with Michigan winning in 2006 and losing in 2007.
Wisconsin has definitely proven to be one of the tougher teams in the Big Ten to deal with, and as far as conference powers go, the Badgers are right below Michigan and Ohio State.
