Hansbrough-less UNC beats Kentucky 77-58 (AP)

Deon Thompson scored a career-high 20 points to help top-ranked North Carolina beat Kentucky 77-58 on Tuesday night despite playing yet again without national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough. Wayne Ellington had 16 points for the Tar Heels (2-0), who led by double figures barely 4 minutes into the game and never looked back in a matchup of the winningest programs in men's college basketball.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels, Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington, Kentucky Wildcats

North Carolina-Penn: Tyler Too—Zeller Impressive in Heels' Opening Victory

Tylers, Tylers everywhere.
One Tyler (Hansbrough) wasn't able to go. Another Tyler (Zeller) played admirably in his place on the North Carolina starting roster. Still a third Tyler (Bernardini) turned in the best performance for the losing Quakers as UNC cruised to an 86-71 victory that was not as close as the score might indicate.
Playing without three-time All-American Tyler Hansbrough and defensive specialist Marcus Ginyard, UNC easily handled a Pennsylvania squad that attempted to thwart them with the Quakers' traditional zone defense. Although UNC shot a decent 47 percent against the zone, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington were not responsible for the impressive statistics.
The Tar Heels were led by Hansbrough's replacement, freshman Tyler Zeller, scoring 18 points on five for eight shooting from the field, and also hitting eight of 10 from the charity stripe.
Fellow freshman Ed Davis posted a double-double, and Deon Thompson was impressive on both ends of the court, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Penn Quakers

Back For More: North Carolina Returns Stellar Starting Five for 2008-09

Chapel Hill is a good place to be a basketball fan right now, because Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are poised for another championship run.
Led by the reigning NCAA Player of the Year, Tyler Hansbrough, UNC returns a starting five that could rival any in college hoops history.
At point guard, the Heels boast one of the nation's most electrifying players: Ty Lawson.
