Bama Tops Tigers: So Close but So Far Away

What must be a morning of not only bruised bodies are bruised hearts of the LSU Tigers after losing to Alabama yesterday...players, coaches, and fans. While LSU held serve for much of the game, the fourth quarter was where the needle became too heavy, and their backs were broken. Bama proved to be the SEC West Champions. Although there were four questionable calls that could have led to a different outcome of the game, the Tide showed why they could be a good representative for the SEC in Pasadena. I will be rooting for them to beat Florida and bring back the crystal football to the SEC West wing. However, as Tiger fans, it’s still a tough loss. To come so close, and to have it all slip away so quickly at the end. But don’t forget...these experiences are needed to build a championship team. The old saying that "what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger," is so true in college football. We’ll find out if Coach Miles can inspire his team to accept that challenge. When all the delusional Bama and Florida fans pick themselves up off the floor, we can begin. OK. Coming into his first college head coaching job, Lane Kiffin was left with a roster of what had played like inferior talent and what seemed to be babied egos. Tennessee went 5-7 in 2008, firing the longest tenured coach in the SEC, Phillip Fulmer. With embarrassing blowouts by Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina being topped off by a loss to Wyoming, outside of a highly touted recruiting class there wasn't too much a UT fan could certainly be excited about. Holding back expectations more than anything was the uncertainty at the quarterback position. Jonathan Crompton played as bad as any QB has ever played at UT in 2008 and Nick Stephens couldn't do the job well enough to stay in over Crompton. Let's think about the word improvement. Teams are always looking to improve from what they were the year before, even title-winning teams want to improve. The Detroit Lions were 8-8 in 2000 and were looking to improve when they brought in new General Manager Matt Millen. The Michigan Wolverines were 8-4 in 2006 and looking to improve when they brought in new head coach Rich Rodriguez. Yes, I just compared our Michigan Wolverines to the Detroit Lions. That is how far this program has fallen. I can't think of any better way to accentuate the point. Sometimes even the best plans backfire. The team wasn't bad, by any means when Rich Rodriguez was hired, but they weren't elite either. Rodriguez was brought in to make this program elite again. We knew it would be a process, we knew there would be bumps in the road, we knew it would be frustrating at times, but did anyone really expect this ? As a long time ND fan I have to say that was one of the toughest and most frustrating games to watch. Triple Option football is not a hard concept to defend. It's one of the oldest offenses in college football. It capitalizes on inconsistent and sloppy play on the defense. I want to make sure everyone understands this first and foremost, Navy played a great football game and capitalized on every chance ND gave them. They played disciplined assignment football and their defense bent but never broke. Since I played defense throughout my football playing days I tend to focus more on that side of the ball. What I saw against Navy had to be some of the worst three technique and middle linebacker play in a long time against an option team. To disrupt a option team you need one thing and that is penetration from your three techniques to get at least one yard deep in the offensive backfield. The Oklahoma Sooners, unable to overcome five interceptions thrown by quarterback Landry Jones, three field goal attempts missed by placekicker Tress Way, and bungled timeout management by head coach Bob Stoops, lost to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 10-3, in another tight game Saturday night. The problem with Oklahoma's games for several years now is that they must be wound up. In that process, most end in victories, but the tight ones seldom conclude memorably. Penn State Fans: Sorry, but MOST of You Deserve This

Especially if you are a member of the Penn State blog, BlackShoeDiaries. Honestly, I don't usually rub it in to the opposing fans after the Buckeyes win, but a large majority of the PSU fan base deserves it after the comments and overload of venomous trash talk they spewed leading up to this game. Now, don't me wrong—I'm all for trash talk—but it's a two-way street. Someone forgot to tell the posters or staff at BSD that though. They can name call and cuss all they want, but if you reply similarly, you get the "ban hammer." At least I can take solace in knowing that "all three of my readers" can join in with me in saying, "We told you so!" PSU fans are worse than Michigan fans, if you can believe that. At least UM fans have some historical ground to stand on. PSU fans have very little in comparison, but that doesn't stop them from talking the talk, sans actually walking the walk. No, Saturday night, the Bears faithful saw electric junior tailback Jahvid Best exit Memorial Stadium, likely for the final time, on a cart. The preseason Heisman hopeful sustained a frightening concussion midway through the second quarter of Cal's 31-14 loss to Oregon State on Saturday after being hurled into the air during a touchdown dive, before landing on the back of his head in the end zone. Best briefly lost consciousness following a fall of more than five feet, Cal head coach Jeff Tedford told the Associated Press, and was carted off the field 13 minutes later wearing an oxygen mask to the nervous applause of 56,496 onlookers. Best was brought to nearby Highland Hospital in Oakland and preliminary reports showed the Vallejo native had movement in all of his extremities. A tough season for Arizona State just became a lot tougher after last night's five point loss to Southern California. Dennis Erickson's squad played well, but once again, not good enough to earn a victory. The USC Trojans came into Tempe hobbling after a rough road trip to Eugene last weekend, and for Pete Carroll's bunch, the second consecutive road game almost ended in another nightmare. Arizona State had a very physical gameplan, both offensively and defensively. The problem, and the main reason why the Sun Devils were not able to pull off the victory was because of turnovers. Saturday was a big day for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Ohio State put their foot on the neck of rival Penn State in Happy Valley, 24-7, to lay claim as the eminent challenger for the Nittany Lions' Big 10 crown. The Buckeye position was further enhanced by Iowa's dismal performance and 17-10 loss to unranked Northwestern in a game played on the Hawkeyes' home field. Saturday brought exactly what the Tigers needed. First and foremost, it was a victory. Secondly, it was a large victory, over a significantly overmatched opponent. No one expected Furman to have a chance, but by leading 42-3 at the half, the Tigers made sure there was no chance at this one ever being close. Chris Todd came out firing on all cylinders, hooking up with Darvin Adams for over 100 yards and three of his four touchdowns en route to a 256 yard day through the air, and this was only in the first half. Ben Tate ran hard as usual, and the first team defense limited the Paladins to a mere field goal in the first half. This team keeps rolling towards a BCS bowl. And hopefully a national title appearance. All they need is a Texas and Cincinnati loss, and they are a shoe-in for the title game. But in my opinion, this team deserves to get in over Texas, and play the SEC champion. Their defense is (arguably) the best in all of college football. On offense, they average over 200 yards rushing a game and have one of the most efficient dual threat QB's in the nation in Andy Dalton. And on special teams they have Jeremy Kerley, who already has two punt return touchdowns and is extremely dangerous as a receiver or running the wildcat formation. It's still too early to write the obituary for Notre Dame's 2009 season but today's 23-21 loss to Navy is more than a hiccup—it's more like a case of full blown acid reflux. No. 22 Notre Dame wasn't the only one to get dealt a hard dose of reality on this Saturday. Along with the Irish, five other ranked teams went from the contender column into the pretender column. No. 4 Iowa, No. 8 Oregon, No. 11 Penn State, No. 20 California, and No. 24 Oklahoma were also exposed for not being worthy of the lofty rankings the coaches poll had given them.
