Bo Pelini on Florida-Oklahoma BCS Title Matchup

From today’s New York Times ("I’ll go read a real newspaper. I’ll read the New York Times "— Bill Callahan ):

Coach’s View: No. 1 Priority Is Execution
By Bo Pelini

Five football coaches scouted the B.C.S. title game, between Florida and Oklahoma on Thursday night, for The Quad. This is a report by Bo Pelini, the Nebraska coach, as told to Thayer Evans.
The battle up front and the team that wins the turnover battle are the two things that will be keys in this game. It’s going to be a close matchup.
At the end of day it’s about which team blocks, tackles and makes plays. You’re not going to be able to trick the other team. It’s not going to be about just X’s and O’s. It’s going to be about which team outexecutes the other.
I have a lot of respect for Florida. I played them three years in a row. They’re a good football team. Oklahoma is a tremendous football team. They’re both ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Bo Pelini, Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators, Nebraska Cornhuskers

Will Ndamukong Suh Stay in Nebraska or Go to the NFL?

As Bo Pelini has publicly stated, Ndamukong Suh has a decision to make regarding the NFL.
While Suh earlier said publicly he is coming back, it seems like he is giving himself some room to change his mind :

“(M)y mind-set right now is that I’m 99 percent coming back to school.”

And Bo Pelini thinks he is leaning towards coming back:

“I’m not going to worry about it. I’d love to have him back, and I think he will,” Pelini said. “And I think in the end, probably just in terms of his future and his career, that’s probably the right decision.
“But if he explores it and it turns out it’s not the best thing for him (to stay), he’s a great kid, I love him. I want to do what is best for Suh.”

Scout’s, Inc has Suh projected as the 31st best ‘draft eligible’ player out there but the third best overall DT , which leads me to think that given the scarcity of quality DTs in the NFL, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini

Return of the Blackshirts: Huskers Win Nail-Biter over Clemson 26-21

There was no denying the fact that Clemson had a good defense based on their season numbers. Turns out these Nebraska boys can play some defense too. This was a game for the defenses, both of them, but when it was down to crunch time, in the final two-minutes of the game and all was on the line, it was the Blackshirts of Nebraska that made the difference in the game. This game had enough drama to last most of us an entire season, let alone a single bowl game. But for the more than 65,000 in attendance and a few million watching it came down to an instant replay reversal and stout defense to send Husker Nation home happy. Don’t think there was hard hitting in this game? Senior quarterback Joe Ganz was hit play after play and even missed a...well calling it a single play is way understating it, more on that later. Then throw in the fact that starting running back Roy Helu Jr. was suffering from a knee infection and was limited to about five plays and senior Marlon Lucky was still hurting from ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Clemson Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini

Fresh Gator Bowl Breakdown From This Morning’s Jacksonville Times-Union

   GO BIG RED!
We are less than eight hours from kickoff of the 2009 Gator Bowl , and you can feel the anticipation in the air!
We’ve got a breakdown of Nebraska vs. Clemson from this morning’s Jacksonville Times-Union, courtesy of Jacksonville.com columnist Garry Smits :

  2009 Gator Bowl Breakdown from
Garry Smits of the Jacksonville Times-Union
  INTANGIBLES
Both teams are entering the Gator Bowl on three-game winning streaks. Both have overcome adversity this season. Both have first-year coaches. At mid-season, neither expected to be in a New Year’s Day bowl.
It’s hard to forecast how each team will respond. Clemson has played in the Gator Bowl nine times, and Nebraska is in its first trip to Jacksonville, but that doesn’t affect any players on either team one way or another. Clemson last played here in 2001.
However, the Tigers still might feel more at home just a few hours away from South Carolina. With two ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Clemson Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini

What Does It Mean to Be a GO BIG RED Fan?

I am a 50-year-old male who was born in Nebraska, because of this I was, by my birth right, an automatic Nebraska Cornhusker Football Fan. No other sport would matter to me; no other sport would be as near and dear to my heart as my Husker Football.
I became a “Bugeater.” What did this mean? Well for starters from the 1969 season, when I was 12 years old until 2001, when I was 45 years old, for 33 consecutive years, my beloved Big Red won at least nine games or more every single year.
That number is in and of itself simply mind boggling. It is an “Excellence of Execution” that, in my opinion, will never be equaled, let alone surpassed. It gave all fans of Husker football a sense of pride and accomplishment that is indescribable. It was, to use another cliché “as reliable as death and taxes.”
Players came and went, but through this entire unbelievable streak, it was overseen by just three coaches, two of which are Icons in Husker football.
The first ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini

As many of you may know, the starting defensive unit at Nebraska is referred to as the Blackshirts, but I am sure many of you don't have a clue as to why. Here is the story that I have uncovered when researching the subject.
When the two-platoon system in college football was instituted in 1964, the Huskers were preparing for a game at Minnesota, and Head Coach Bob Devaney was looking for a way to distinguish the first string defensive unit from the reserves on the practice fields.
To help in this situation, Devaney dispatched assistant coach Mike Corgan to a local sporting goods store to find some "contrast jerseys," to wear on top of the players' practice jerseys.
While the top offensive unit practiced in red jerseys and the second-string offense worked in green pullovers, the first string defense wore black pullovers and the second string wore the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini
