Five Coaches Who Have What Notre Dame Football Needs

When Bob Davie took over for Lou Holtz before the 1997 college football season, nobody knew it was effectively the end of Notre Dame's reign amongst the nation's elite college football programs.

Sporting News' Matt Hayes picks the 10 best games of the weekend and throws in his upset pick of the week as a bonus.
Ohio State 27, Michigan 14: This will be another Buckeyes-Wolverines game in the mold of yesteryear: Neither team can throw the ball, and one team plays better defense.
Iowa 20, Minnesota 10: Iowa has gone from the national championship conversation to Capital One Bowl talk in three weeks. A win would significantly improve Iowa's BCS hopes.
North Carolina 24, Boston College 23: Imagine what could have been for UNC if not for two horrible home losses to Virginia and FSU. The Heels would be playing for an at-large BCS bowl spot.
Oklahoma 31, Texas Tech 28: This matchup is a microcosm of the crazy season in the Big 12: Two teams with a handful of odd losses are scrambling for eight-win regular seasons.
Notre Dame 31, UConn 28: These are two teams with too many off-field distractions, but one offense is more balanced than the other.
  LSU 19, Mississippi 16: The ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, North Carolina Tar Heels, Bowl Championship Series, Penn State Nittany Lions

Buell's Eye: Week 12's College Football Picks

Week 12 features not only the greatest rivalry in College Football, but the greatest rivalry, filled with unmatchable history and tradition, in all of sports.
Last weekend saw the continuous onward march of the top teams, keeping all six undefeated programs' untainted record intact.
USC made history in all of the wrong ways.
Iowa ensured that they would not see a BCS Bowl this season after their 9-0 start with their second consecutive loss.
Houston, Arizona and South Florida all took huge steps backward, as well.
And, the Ohio State Buckeyes punched their ticket for yet another Rose Bowl appearance.
My worst week, so far, occurred in Week 11 with a 16-6 record, leading to my 184-46 record overall.
This weekend, look for three more upsets to take place while Oregon looks to meet up with Ohio State in a run for the roses, and let the first of the major rivalries begin!

Is the Big Ten Headed for Bowl Game Disaster Again?

Bowl Season used to bring joy to the Big Ten.
Now it brings a bottle of Jack Daniel's to make fans forget the pain and agony of the used-to-be powerhouse conference and its futility in the postseason.
It seems like a long time since Ohio State won the National Championship in 2002. Since then the Buckeyes (2003, 2005) and Penn State (2005) are the only Big Ten Schools to win a BCS Bowl.
Last year Iowa's 31-10 win over South Carolina in the Outback Bowl marked the only Big Ten victory in the postseason.
Outside of that, No. 10 Ohio State lost to No. 3 Texas 24-21 in the Fiesta Bowl. No. 8 Penn State lost to No. 5 USC 38-24 in the Rose Bowl. No. 18 Michigan State lost to No. 15 Georgia 24-12 in the Capitol One Bowl.
Kansas defeated Minnesota 42-21 (Insight Bowl), No. 23 Northwestern lost 30-23 to No. 21 Missouri (Alamo Bowl) and Wisconsin lost 42-13 to Florida State (Champs Sports Bowl).
It can't get any worse this year, can it?
Let's take a look at where the Big Ten sits in current CBS Sports bowl ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Jim Tressel, Terrelle Pryor, Bowl Championship Series

The Five Coaches That Can Replace Charlie Weis And Return Notre Dame To Glory

With a 35-25 record, one bowl victory, one BCS appearance, no national titles and only one 10 win season at Notre Dame, Charlie Weis is on track to become yet another head coach in South Bend that could not get the job done. Although Weis' recruiting classes have been rated high, he has not turned that into success on the field. Some even argue his first two winning seasons should have an asterik by them because most of those players were recruited by Ty Willingham. Since Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick is supposedly going to wait until the end of the season to evaluate the program, here is list of coaches that he needs to have on the top of his list if he truly wants to bring football back to South Bend.
College Football's Top 10 Coaching Jobs of 2009: From Low Expectations to Spectacular Results

The 2009 football season is almost over, just a few more weeks and everything will have ironed itself out in the BCS, Heisman and various other post-season awards.

But as we look back on the fabled season that was 2009 we must look back to some of the best coaching jobs in the nation. Some have probably not been talked about, others have been raved about from season's beginning and still others are just starting to gain steam.

So who are the best coaching stories of 2009?

What follows is what one want-to-be sports-writer thinks. To him (me) these have been the best coaches in this 2009 season, feel free to respond and comment in kind, but remember, this is just the opinion of one man.
The 10 Worst Officiating Calls In College Football This Year

Were the refs always this bad? Is the replay system bogus? Or is it just more obvious since the calls have happened in the big games?

These are the pressing questions facing college football fandom now that questionable calls have, more than ever, determined the outcome of the season.

I've ranked the top 10 worst calls (with video!), taking into account their egregious misuse of footage, their effect on the game, and their role in the BCS narrative.

Instances where a call was correct on the field and overturned in the booth are of particular interest for those that still believe the replay system works.

Maybe take an ibuprofen or two before you watch; this could be very upsetting.
BCS breakdown: TCU's big win further clouds picture

Think about the statement, and take in the enormity of it all.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham on TCU: "I have been a coach for five years, and that is the best team I've faced." Utah has faced a handful of BCS teams in Whittingham's tenure, but the one that stands out was Alabama in last season's Sugar Bowl. The same Alabama team that was a handful of perfect throws from Florida quarterback Tim Tebow from playing in the national title game.
We all know what would've happened in that game—and we all know what Utah did to the Tide in the Sugar Bowl. That only gives more weight to Whittingham's comments after TCU's dismantling of Utah—and further clouds the non-BCS question:
Does unbeaten TCU, a member of the non-BCS Mountain West Conference but playing better than anyone in the nation, deserve to play in the BCS national championship game? "All we can do," said TCU quarterback Andy Dalton, "is continue to play as well as we can and see what happens."

USC, a BCS regular the past seven Januarys, is suddenly thinking Sun Bowl.
Georgia Tech, which hasn't played in one of the big bowls since the BCS' inception, is talking Orange.
It's been that kind of November, with traditional powers struggling (Oklahoma picked up two votes in Sunday's Legends Poll), perennial also-rans thriving (No. 15 Stanford is California's highest-ranked team), and fans debating who should come after the Big 3 (Alabama is the Legends' new No. 1, Florida No. 2, Texas No. 3).
No. 8 Ohio State secured one of the 10 BCS spots with Saturday's 27-24 overtime win against Iowa. Here's a look at a few other teams the Legends like to join the Buckeyes in the coming weeks:

None of the Legends think Colt McCoy and Texas will lose in the Big 12 title game.

I Have A Dream TCU Beats Florida. I Only Hope Its in The BCS Title Game

Last year the Bowl Championship Series tried their best to put down the perceived underdog. Utah was given the task of playing Alabama, a team one win away from the BCS title game, practically on the road in New Orleans.
So what did Utah do? They embarrassed the Crimson Tide. They beat them from start to finish.
That doesn't make the BCS happy.
The BCS has had two strategies to their automatic qualifying teams, strategy one: put them in a bowl that a victory won't make an impact.
In the 2004-2005 season Utah, led by Alex Smith and coach Urban Meyer, ranked No. 6, played the Big East Champion Pittsburgh Panthers. Utah turned the game into a laugher, but to most fans victory was expected.
What did Utah get for their win? They ended the season ranked No. 4. Why wasn't Utah given the opportunity to play another undefeated team, Auburn?
The answer is simple, why allow the team to earn any respect? If Utah were to win against Auburn what would that do to the system?
In the 2006-2007 season, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Bowl Championship Series, Boise State Broncos, TCU Horned Frogs

The Sunday Morning BCS Report: Week 11

The best story of the college football weekend was Stafon Johnson speaking and quoting his grandmother at a press conference
On the field, Ohio State punched their ticket to yet another BCS bowl game with a thrilling overtime victory over Iowa. Jim Tressel has led the Buckeyes to five straight Big Ten titles as he climbs closer to iconic coach Woody Hayes.
Iowa's redshirt freshmen QB, James Vandenberg, played with composure. The difference in the game was the Ohio State rushing attack led by Dan Herron and Brandon Saine. Terrelle Pryor only had to pass the ball 17 times and the Buckeye defense picked off Vandenberg three times on their way to a birth in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1997.
Florida finished off their first undefeated season in the SEC since the late '90s while Alabama kept pace with the Gators after a big win over Mississippi State. Those two teams are now one week closer to their national semi-final meeting in the SEC Conference Championship Game.

Broncos improve to 10-0 and still eye BCS bid after a 63-25 win.
                         >

at No. 6 Boise State 63, Idaho 25: Kellen Moore threw four touchdown passes to Austin Pettis and tied a career high with five overall, and the No. 6 Broncos (10-0, 5-0) overwhelmed the visiting Vandals (7-4, 4-3) in a Western Athletic Conference game.
Jimmy Clausen: We had to dig ourselves out of a hole

Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen threw for 283 yards and a touchdown in the Irish's 27-22 loss to Pitt . Clausen met with Sporting News' Matt Hayes and other reporters after the game.

Q: Any specific reason you guys struggled early on offense?
Jimmy Clausen: We were down a little bit in the first half. For whatever reason, we weren't moving the ball. Whether it was a penalty, a poorly thrown ball, a misread; a lot of little things. We just couldn't consistently move down the field without mistakes and put it in the end zone.

Q: Do you feel like the season has slipped away?
JC: I don't think anything has slipped away from us. Together as a whole, we've put ourselves in position where we've had to dig ourselves out of a hole.

Q: Earlier the talk was about a BCS bowl, now this team will be lucky to play on New Year's Day. How hard is that to accept?
JC: Everything that I know, none of us were talking about the BCS in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pittsburgh Panthers, Bowl Championship Series
