Statistically Speaking: Notre Dame vs. Hawaii

Better late than never I guess…
The Fighting Irish played arguably the best 60 minutes of football in the past 24 games on Christmas Eve, beating the Hawaii Warriors in all three phases of the game.
Notre Dame dominated in time of possession (33 to 27 minutes), total offense (478 to 359 yards), average yards per play (7.7 to 5.6 yards per play), passing yards (413 to 326 yards), and special teams (one touchdown and 44.3 yards per kickoff return), riding nine explosive offensive plays and eight sacks to victory.
Perhaps the only regret for Irish fans after this game was to bemoan the lost opportunity of a 6-6 regular season.
The running game was about the only area where the Irish struggled. The Irish were perfect scoring touchdowns in the red zone, didn’t turn the ball over, and converted better than 57 percent of third downs through the meaningful minutes of the contest.
Only a 1.9-yard per carry outing for the Irish offense and a 7.3-yard per rush average allowed by the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Jimmy Clausen, Charlie Weis, Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Receive First 2010 Verbal Committment

Mark Allen, Domer Sports Report Notre Dame Football 2010 Recruiting
Christian Lombard , an offensive lineman from Palatine, Illinois has given a verbal commitment to play football for the University of Notre Dame. Lombard, a current junior, becomes the first verbal commitment for the recruiting class of 2010. The 6'5", 290-pound offensive lineman made his announcement in San Antonio, Texas. He was there for the U.S. Army All-American game. He was among the juniors who were invited. He will also play in next year's game.

The highly-rated lineman—at least one service projects him as a five-star prospect—chose Notre Dame after narrowing his list down to three. The other finalists were Iowa and Wisconsin.

When asked why he chose Notre Dame, Lombard cited a few reasons.

"Overall, it's a good fit. I just think I can play early. I want to make an impact on that team because I know they're going to be good and I want to be a part of that," he ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis

New Year’s Resolution: Restore the “Fight” in the Irish

The past two seasons have not been in the vicinity of meeting expectations of the Fighting Irish faithful. With the conclusion of the 2008 campaign, we can now turn our attention to the 2009 season. In the spirit of the New Year, let us focus on the resolutions Notre Dame and Charlie Weis will be required to make.

In order for the 2009 Fighting Irish football team to flourish, they will need to adjust their approach. From the head coach down to the third string kicker, the Irish need to get tougher and develop a killer instinct. Weis will have to emphasize conditioning, toughness, and going for a team’s jugular instead of allowing them to creep back into the game.

Notre Dame needs to think like ADT/Under Armour and start protecting “the House that Rock Built.” Knute Rockne was probably lying infuriated in his grave as the Irish conceded double-digit leads in the second half to Pittsburgh and the mighty Syracuse Orangemen in the house he built.

Notre Dame to Change Fighting Irish Into Passive Aggressive Irish

After another sub-par year for Notre Dame football, head coach Charlie Weis vows big changes on the horizon for next season.
He says that in order to change the results on the field, they are going to have to change their entire team identity.
They will start by no longer being known as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but the Passive Aggressive Irish.

Instead of their old defensive methods of attempting to tackle the opposing team, they will express their desire for them not to get into the endzone by not speaking to them for a long time or maybe not inviting them to the annual Christmas party.
Charlie Weis has already begun deploying his passive aggressive mind games against USC for next season when he did not include them in a Top 5 college teams bulletin he posted on his Facebook.
We will have to wait and see if this technique can stop them from beating them by 30 points again next year.
"We just don't have the athletes to fight head-to-head against these big programs," said Weis. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Jimmy Clausen

New Year's Resolutions For The Fighting Irish

As the calendar turns to 2009, here are a few resolutions for the Irish and their faithful heading into the New Year.
 1. Patience For All Notre Dame Fans With Charlie Weis
After his first two seasons there were about zero Irish fans calling for CW to be fired. Now, just two seasons later, practically the entire fan base is wanting a new head coach. Just be patient.
When Weis first came in, the roster was riddled with upperclassmen. My feeling is it takes a little while to grasp Weis' offense, and for those younger players, the learning curve is fairly slow. Granted, I would have liked to see more growth from Jimmy Clausen this season, but the Hawaii Bowl was very encouraging. Then, as the young roster improves and moves on, the recruits that have gotten valuable practice time in the offense will be ready to step in and play well.
We were lucky to have Brady Quinn and company for Weis' first two seasons, let's give the new class, and Weis, some time ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis
