Charlie Weis: Cleveland Browns' New Offensive Coordinator?

When Brady Quinn met with media on Wednesday, the highlight wasn't him talking about his breakout performance on Sunday. It also wasn't about how he is preparing for the Cincinnati Bengals. Instead he spent a lot of the time defending his college coach, Charlie Weis.
A couple of comments that stood out were where Quinn flat out said that Notre Dame firing Weis would be a mistake.
The comment that would be of more interest to Browns fans is when Quinn said that he would love to work with Weis again someday, if the situation presented itself.
What was Quinn's motivation for making these comments? That we will never know for sure, but it will lead to speculation. Some may feel that he is just fighting for the coach who really took his college career to new heights when he took over for Tyrone Willingham.
Others may think that Quinn is actually trying to send a message to Randy Lerner and whomever is hired to the executive position. Quinn knows that Weis will be out no matter what he said. Of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Charlie Weis, Brady Quinn, Cleveland Browns

Notre Dame recruits, playing wait-and-see with Weis

Football: Notre Dame recruits, Prater playing wait-and-see with Weis
                         >

Lake Forest quarterback Tommy Rees and Fremd offensive lineman Christian Lombard made oral commitments to play for Charlie Weis at Notre Dame before the season, when Weis was the unquestioned leader of what was supposed to be an improved Fighting Irish team.

Oh Great: ESPN Moves from Charlie Weis to Les Miles

So is Charlie Weis going to get fired? Lately no one cares. It's all about is Les Miles going to get fired. Well he isn't. Want to know why? Because the buy out for this year is $13 million. LSU athletic does have that, but why spend it? Give the man a chance. This is really on his MAJOR mistake since arriving at LSU in 2005. LSU plays Arkansas this weekend, or Ar-KANSAS as Miles calls it, this weekend. For Les to be fired LSU will have to fall to Arkansas and lose the bowl game as well. Not gonna happen. LSU will win out this season in my opinion, and will beat Arkansas 35-31. Yes my pick is four points in the Tigers' favor. Tune to ESPN Saturday at six, when the Razorbacks of Arkansas take on the Fighting Tigers of LSU. Should be a good one. All fans making the trip to Baton Rouge, be safe and enjoy the game. It should be fun. God Bless and as always, GEAUX TIGERS!

Dead Man on Campus: Charlie Weis' Last Days at Notre Dame

For all those who say that there are no such thing as zombies, I submit Charlie Weis and the Notre Dame coaching staff.
Even the embattled coach himself seems resigned to the fact that his dismissal is imminent, saying at his weekly postmortem address that he would agree with a coaching change.
When you are the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame, you have to believe that you are the best man in the world for the job. The moment you waiver in that belief, it is truly time to go.
Through the previous two straight terrible seasons, Weis never wavered in his commitment that he had the program headed in the right direction. He stood steadfast and confident, even after a dreadful 3-9 campaign in 2007 and after losing to 2-8 Syracuse on Senior Day in 2008.
Following this year's Senior Day overtime loss to Connecticut, the third in what looks like four straight losses to end the 2009 season at 6-6, Weis' tank looks empty.
When there is no fight left in the coach of the Fighting ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Why Charlie Weis with the Kansas City Chiefs Makes Sense

The writing is most certainly on the wall in South Bend. Charlie Weis' head coaching experiment is all but over at the University of Notre Dame.
Weis has already acknowledged his inevitable departure by stating that his record isn't "good enough" at the moment to be the Notre Dame head football coach.
If you needed a more definitive reason why Weis won't be in Notre Dame next year, the school's Athletic Director will not allow him to go on his scheduled recruiting trip after Saturday's Stanford game. Instead Weis will fly back to Notre Dame to face the end of his run as their coach.
So what are the next steps for Weis? Rumors have been flying around the past few days regarding Weis in Kansas City. There just happens to be an opening for an offensive coordinator in KC, and with Weis' background, it would be no surprise to me to see him in KC in 2010.
It seems like a logical fit for Weis with the Chiefs, and here are a handful of reasons why.
1. GM Scott Pioli doesn't hide the fact that he ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kansas City Chiefs, Charlie Weis

Former Irish QB Quinn backs embattled Weis

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn says Notre Dame would be making a mistake if it fires coach Charlie Weis.

Quinn, who played two seasons for Weis with the Fighting Irish, believes it would be a "horrible decision" if the school makes a coaching change. Notre Dame is 6-5 heading into its regular-season finale at Stanford. Weis is 35-26 in five seasons at his alma mater.

Quinn said there have been a "lot of circumstances" that have led to Notre Dame's national slide.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis

Luck and the Irish seem far apart

Andrew Luck is fine with admitting that this Notre Dame thing doesn't mean much to him. Not Charlie Weis' job, not Jimmy Clausen's shiner, not Touchdown Jesus' tears, not threadbare tradition, not much of anything really. Save, perhaps, this. "We play teams...

Jimmy Clausen, Charlie Weis, and Other Notre Dame Rumors and Rumblings

With each passing hour, new rumors are born all over the online Notre Dame football fan community.
Even the leprechaun has been rumored to have been shown the door after failing to motivate the student section, resulting directly in five losses for the Irish.
All of these rumblings are hard to believe and must be taken with a grain of salt. However, that doesn't mean that any of these are false.
—According to a few sources, the Clausen family has sold its South Bend property. If true, Clausen is NFL-bound.
—The phrase "Out with the old, in with the new," is the status featured on the top of Ian Williams' Facebook page. Remember, Williams was the player benched by Weis after comments directed toward the coaching staff. Doghouse, anyone?
—Clausen was involved in an altercation with an Irish alum outside of CJ's pub after Saturday's loss. Clausen apparently gave the man a shove after he had said something to a female acquaintance of the quarterback.
—A rumored "contract" for the next ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis

Irish AD Swarbrick nixes Weis' recruiting trip

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says Charlie Weis will return with the football team after the Stanford game instead of staying on the West Coast to recruit.

Swarbrick made the comments Tuesday during a taping of his radio show for WLS Radio 890 in Chicago, which normally airs on Saturday. Weis had said Sunday he planned to stay on the West Coast recruiting, just as he had last year when he and Swarbrick met to discuss his future.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Stanford Cardinal

If You Want to Talk Stanford, Let's Talk Stanford

Charlie Weis once again went into the lion's den during his latest press conference. He's got to be getting sick of this by now and I look forward to seeing each and every one.
This latest press conference featured not only the questions of Weis's job security, but also questions about his quarterback getting sucker punched in the face by what I'm assuming was a very angry fan.
Like many coaches tend to do when negative questions come up, Charlie stuck to avoiding the question and only wanting to talk about the upcoming game. In this case the surging Stanford Cardinal.
You may not want to talk about those issues but I'm expecting that after this weekend you won't want to talk about Stanford either.
The bottom line is this is not a good match-up for the slumping Fighting Irish. Granted Stanford is coming off a tough loss to California, but before that they had wins against three top 25 teams.
Not only has Notre Dame failed to beat a top 25 team this year, but they also haven't looked too ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Stanford Cardinal, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis

Notre Dame Vs. Connecticut: Statistically Speaking

Editor's note: I was at the Ole Miss-LSU game this weekend and was unable to watch Notre Dame play Connecticut. This analysis is directly from the box score and will undoubtedly lack certain insight that comes from viewing the game.
The Irish dropped their third straight Saturday, this time at home, on Senior Day, to the visiting Huskies. For the coaches, players and fans, it feels like 2008 all over again. The Irish had a promising start in both years, but faltered down the stretch.
This game wasn't much different from many others this year. A strong passing attack led by quarterback Jimmy Clausen and wide receivers Golden Tate and Michael Floyd was not enough to overcome poor red zone offense, a lack of commitment to running the football, and a defense that cannot stop opposing rushing attacks.
Offense The Irish gained 452 yards on 80 plays for an average of 5.7 yards per snap. Ball control was phenomenal as Clausen and company generated a time of possession advantage of over six ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Connecticut Huskies, Charlie Weis

Jimmy Clausen: I Am Asking Nicely, Please Leave

Mr. Clausen, this is nothing personal. You did all you could and have played your heart out all year. You made some amazing throws in your three years. You and Golden Tate could make your own highlight reel with some of the plays the two of you made. I will never forget that long bomb in San Antonio against Washington State.
I will never forget your arrival. You showed up in that hummer and waved four fingers indicating four national championships. You were set to follow a very tough act in Brady Quinn. All the hype said that you would be even better than Quinn. I skeptically thought, "I sure hope so."
Now here we are three years later and still no national championships. It isn't all your fault. There were a lot of factors involved. Certainly the offensive line has let you down in alot of ways. Your receivers have let you down lately with key fumbles.
Having said that, it has been three straight games in which you were unable to move the ball with the game on the line in the last minute.
Forget Charlie Weis, The 49ers Need Tom Brady

In what is rapidly becoming a Monday morning ritual around these parts, San Francisco 49ers fans are spending the early hours of their day cursing out the offensive coordinator in between bites of their bran muffins and sips of their soy lattes.
It's never the defense's fault.
It's never the offensive line's fault.
Quarterback Alex Smith is better than people on the East Coast, who can't be bothered to watch 49ers games, think he is.
The head coach, Mike Singletary, is Vince Lombardi reincarnated (just ask him).
Clearly the problem—literally the only person impeding the 49ers being a playoff team— is offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.
It couldn't be any more obvious, right?
After all, he's the guy who calls the plays. He's the guy who had the team come out, again, in a conservative two back offense, with Smith under center for the entire first half, who watched his unit spit up all over itself while falling behind 23-3 to the Packers.
He's the guy who relented in the second half, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Francisco 49ers, Charlie Weis, Tom Brady, Alex Smith

Another Open Letter To Notre Dame Fans From a USC Honk

As some of those who will read this piece know, I have been known in the past to agitate those who follow the Fighting Irish.
However, this was prior to my interaction with those same fans who won me over with their thoughtful and considerate rebuttals to many of the points I had to offer.
I should also point out that I write this article as a humbled USC fan, one who has shared the same kind of disappointment with my team this season as those who follow Notre Dame.
But to the point of this article, I am a bit confused.
Yesterday, Charlie Weis gave an interview in which he said that he would never forgive those fans, and there have been many of them according to Charlie, who have made their attacks personal thus invoking irreparable harm to his wife and son.
Charlie went on to say, and I am paraphrasing here, that those fans have denigrated him about his weight and other various slights regarding his appearance.
These attacks have made life miserable for his family, even prompting his ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Southern California Trojans

Notre Dame's Season Ends Not with a Bang, but with a Whimper

While the crowd cheered when the Irish scored and made noise for UConn on third down, it was hollow. For this Fighting Irishman, who attended his first Notre Dame football game at the age of 11 years old, it felt like the next-to-last performance of a burned-out theater troupe—everyone saying their lines and hitting their marks, even as the spark went out of both the actors and the audience. As the game wore on, a deadly, heavy blanket of inevitability descended. By the middle of the third quarter, I knew we would lose this game.
What's left to say? With one game to go, Notre Dame Nation has already turned the page. Jimmy and Golden are as good as gone, and Charlie Weis is a dead man walking. The real driver of the ND story now is not Stanford (we'll get crushed), or even what embarrassing bowl bid the Irish will accept (skip the bowls, stay home, let the pain of this unmitigated disaster sink in, and learn from it). No, now the question is: Who will lead the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame?

Florida coach Urban Meyer says he plans to coach the Gators "as long as they'll have me."

With rumors swirling about Charlie Weis' future at Notre Dame, Meyer squashed any potential speculation about leaving Gainesville for South Bend.

Meyer's news conference Monday was his most emotional in five seasons at Florida, with the coach having to pause and compose himself several times while talking about quarterback Tim Tebow and other seniors' final home game Saturday against rival Florida State.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tim Tebow, Florida State Seminoles

What We Learned: Results reflect Weis' inability to motivate

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Sunday's buzz means to college football.
Win one for Charlie
Charlie Weis' "tough time arguing" surrender speech Sunday afternoon didn't set up the Irish for a rousing effort Saturday night at Stanford. And although the game with the Cardinal won't save the coach's job, it will highlight an important yet rarely discussed part of the coach—Charlie Weis, the motivator.

The clock is winding down on Charlie Weis; can he keep his players from quitting on Saturday?
Notre Dame has dealt this season with the following deficits in its losses: 14-3 at Michigan, 34-14 to USC, 14-0 against Navy, 27-9 against Pitt. Saturday's early lead in the loss to Connecticut, maybe sparked by a pregame show of support for Weis, represented an anomaly. What to make of the early-game troubles?

Perhaps the Irish can't match the first-half (and third-quarter) intensity of its opponents.

With their coach cooked and their season lost, Notre Dame's ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said he would have a hard time arguing if the school decides to fire him for his 6-5 record, saying it isn't good enough.

He made the comment Sunday after being asked about his quote when he was hired five years ago when he said 6-5 wasn't good enough. That's what Notre Dame's record was when Tyrone Willingham was fired and that's the school's record again after a double overtime 33-30 loss Saturday to Connecticut (5-5) on Saturday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham

Why Wait? Notre Dame, Jack Swarbrick Need to Fire Charlie Weis Now

With each passing week, rumors and speculations grow on who will take over as the newest head football coach for the most watched, scrutinized, hated, and loved team in the country.
