Kirk Ferentz of Iowa Wins Big Ten Coach of the Year

For the third time in his career, Iowa Hawkeye football coach Kirk Ferentz has been named the Dave McClain Coach of the Year in the Big Ten.
In typical Ferentz fashion, he takes none of the credit.
"All the credit goes to our assistant coaches and most of all to our players," he said in an interview with the Big Ten Network after the award was announced.
Ferentz is only the fourth coach in conference history to be named coach of the year for three seasons. Michigan's Bo Schembechler, Penn State's Joe Paterno, and Iowa's Hayden Fry are the other coaches to achieve the honor on three occasions.
He was also honored as Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2004.
Ferentz ran into a gauntlet of issues this season, from several unfortunate player injuries and illnesses to a brutal road schedule, not to mention an ailing defensive coordinator.
Yet he still steered his team to a season few thought was possible.
The Hawkeyes started the 2009 season 9-0 for the first time in school history, earning a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Iowa Hawkeyes, Kirk Ferentz, Bowl Championship Series

The Big Ten Thanksgiving Table

This week, the holiday season is upon us once again. Some Big Ten teams have already set the table for Thanksgiving. The Buckeyes have secured their usual centerpiece of a Rose Bowl, while the Gophers and Spartans are hoping the BCS is kind and doesn't ask them to travel to Detroit for Pizza.

Like the items on your Thanksgiving table, the Big Ten conference has a wide variety to choose from. Standing alone, they aren't very impressive, but when combined into a banquet, each team provides a unique characteristic to the football feast. Before I hit the hay to prepare myself for the shopping mayhem of Black Friday (I've got my eye on a waffle iron for $4.99) I thought it might be fun to match up each Big Ten football squad with an item on your Thanksgiving buffet.
Iowa's Ferentz defends decision to play for OT

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says a pair of second-half interceptions thrown by freshman quarterback James Vandenberg were on his mind when he played it safe at the end of regulation in last week's loss at Ohio State.

Big Ten Is a Better Conference Than The SEC... Yeah... I Said It

So I just got done watching Iowa vs Ohio State. A game that was supposed to be a blow out. The Big Ten leading Iowa Hawkeyes were not supposed to sniff a championship. All the pundits predicted Ohio State would walk away with a victory.
There really wasn't a reason to watch was there. Good thing nobody told Iowa. James Vandenburg came out with guns blazing. Two and a half hours later the game was decided on a backup kicker hitting a 40 plus yard field goal with seconds left.
I'm not going to recap the whole game because anybody who is reading this probably saw this game and know this was a classic. Big ten football at it's best... chess matches everywhere.
Great offensive line play, solid defensive play and smart coaching. It was all anybody could ask for in a Saturday afternoon. Surely this game would be the game to be talked about for the rest of the day.... Well think again.
Time and time again the Big Ten has shown it to be the most exciting conference in college football. Michigan vs ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Kirk Ferentz

A Letter to Iowa Fans....

Read my analysis on the game.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/290473-now-that-was-a-game-wow
Dear Iowa fans,
I would like to say thank you for believing. I've watched many a football games and I know that it's hard to believe when there is no reason to.
Trust me, as a Buckeye fan, I know how hard it is to have faith when no one else does. I watched an Ohio State vs. Iowa game that I didn't expect.
Well not really. As I trolled all of the Iowa fan sites this week laughing at the Iowa posters that had hope.
I rolled my eyes as I watched the Big Ten Network's Anthony Herron still have hope that Iowa would have a chance in The Shoe .
I mean, honestly how could you have faith in this team. how could you have faith that a team that barely wins games would win one against the conference juggernaut. But I forgot the most important thing about football. The games aren't played in our minds.
In our minds, it is not fathomable for Iowa to come into Ohio State and play hard, but they did.
