One of the school's richest graduates, though, said Rodriguez better win more football games in 2010.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Rich Rodriguez, Michigan Wolverines

A fateful day in 2007 kept Les Miles and LSU and sent Rich Rodriguez to Michigan. Both are now drawing the ire of unhappy fans, Stewart Mandel says in College Football Overtime.

Rich Rod: 'The University of Michigan will be just fine'

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Spend a few minutes around these Michigan Wolverines, and discover the happiest 5-7 team in college football history.
Everything's fine in the Big Ten basement. Schembechler Hall, football headquarters here, doubles as Shangri-La. Each player and coach and ankle-taper in maize and blue is, as this season's UM slogan screams, "All in for Michigan."
And the distance between the Wolverines and the outright Big Ten champ Ohio State Buckeyes, who walked out of Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon with a 21-10 victory? Get a load of this.
"Ohio State's not that good of a team," UM punter Zoltan Mesko said. "We beat ourselves." Say what? Mesko won something called the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award, which makes him maybe the smartest Wolverine. Saturday, he sounded delusional.
So did the rest of his teammates, who pledged, again, that championship contention isn't far away. So does outgoing Michigan athletic director Bill Martin, who ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Rich Rodriguez

It's Over

Thankfully. Congratulations to the Michigan Defense for giving up 14 points. You did enough and deserved the win. The Michigan offense showed it's youth, inexperience and it's ability to lose the game. Freshmen some days look like seniors and other days look like high school seniors. I'm sad for the seniors and not having a bowl game for the second straight year. Not having a healthy Minor and Brown was difficult in a close game. So one season ends and two begin. Recruiting and Basketball. I'm pretty sure Michigan didn't do anything to embarrass themselves with the dozen of Blue Chip recruits in attendance and the basketball team is 2-0. Go Blue!

Michigan fans show discontent by not showing up

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Every other year, this town hosts a color war on the third Saturday of November. The 2009 version came with a twist – Michigan maize didn't overwhelm Ohio State scarlet.
Along South Main Street, the main drag outside Michigan Stadium, each group of tailgating Wolverines fans was matched by a road-tripping crew of Buckeyes. Inside the Big House, the OSU colors, like chunks of tomato in a bowl of corn, stood out as much as any time in decades.
That scene greeted Coach Rich Rodriguez here Saturday, providing more evidence that public opinion remains his No. 1 enemy in this town. And by the end of another loss to rival OSU, this one 21-10, those disgruntled fans owned more reason to be down on this program.
Forget the details – Michigan again couldn't stop the run, again got shoddy quarterback play, again allowed turnovers to destroy its best offensive opportunities. The three-and-a-half hours taken alone, the Wolverines showed decent spirit and vigor by staying ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Rich Rodriguez, Central Michigan Chippewas

Michigan-Ohio State Preview: The Wolverines Aim at Recapturing Glory

All Ohio State-Michigan games are big.
Even one that pits a conference champ in Ohio State against a downtrodden Michigan program.
If Rich Rodriguez is to save his job at Michigan, a win on Saturday would go a long way in helping the cause.
Ohio State has had Michigan's number for the better part of a decade and it proved to be one of the main reasons Lloyd Carr was pushed out in Ann Arbor. Michigan sought a coach who would change this and Rodriguez still has a chance to do that.
It starts Saturday.
A win in the season finale would give hope for next year and provide a spark in the university that might help save Rodriguez's job, for now.
Instead of looking at five elements this week, let's take at three things Michigan MUST do to pull out a victory over the Buckeyes.

  1. Contain Terrell Pryor
This one is obvious.
Michigan's defense has been soft all season and it must pull out its best performance of the season against the Buckeyes. The final home game for seniors, including ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Rich Rodriguez

Tressel not in favor of later date for future Ohio State-Michigan games

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Michigan-Ohio State game will move to the first Saturday after Thanksgiving next season, a decision that doesn't sit well with Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel.

"I'm kind of an old-timer. … I've always thought the Big Ten had a great advantage in the fact their kids go home for an extended Thanksgiving vacation," Tressel told reporters in a teleconference. "To have a chance to be with your family over Thanksgiving, I've always felt was a real positive thing for our kids. The decision was made to move it back (and) I'm not sure I was a proponent of that."

Michigan coach Rodriguez doesn't necessarily agree with the decision, either, but he does like one benefit that comes out of it.
"I do like the fact we'll have an opportunity to have an open date," he said. "I think that's the biggest benefit of moving the schedule back another week."

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Jim Tressel, Rich Rodriguez

Rich Rodriguez says Michigan now logging players' practice hours

                    Sporting News staff reports

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez says the process of filing forms that log hours his players devote to football was corrected as soon as he learned it wasn't happening.

Rodriguez declined further comment Wednesday because of an ongoing NCAA investigation.
An internal audit released Monday discovered the football program failed to file the school's forms that track how long and often players work out and practice as a tool to comply with NCAA rules.

The office of university audits sent Rodriguez a memo on July 24, stating that forms from the 2008 regular season had not been submitted.
The Detroit Free Press, citing anonymous players, reported a month later that Michigan exceeded NCAA limits regarding practices and workouts.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Rich Rodriguez

The Top Individual Performances in the Michigan-Ohio State Rivalry

Michigan and Ohio State square off on Saturday for the 106th time in college football's greatest rivalry.

Ohio State has already wrapped up at least a share of the Big Ten title and a trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl.

Michigan leads the all-time series 57-42-6, but enters this week's match-up needing a win to extend its season through the holidays and take some heat off head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Will someone step up with a historic performance to lead Michigan past the 10th-ranked Buckeyes?

Or will a Buckeye deliver an all-time great showing to capture a sixth consecutive victory over Michigan and send Michigan to its second straight losing season?

There have certainly been some performances for the ages in the past 105 meetings, so we'll take a look at the top individual performances in its storied history.

Bear in mind that this is the top performances in the Michigan-Ohio State game, not necessarily the best players on each team or the best performances for each team against another ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Rich Rodriguez

For Michigan Wolverines Fans, Here's Hoping...

That the finger pointing, if any, is at a minimum this week. That the coaches can come up with one solid game plan that pulls all of the positives together and puts the players in a position to succeed. That the players give it their best this week in practice. That Brandon Minor, Carlos Brown, and the other seniors are in a position to play this Saturday. That Brandon Graham destroys Justin Boren at least once in a head-to-head battle. That Tate Forcier doesn't try to do too much and just throws the ball away when needed. That our LBs and safeties make the correct reads. That coach Rich Rodriguez inspires the hell out of his players before the game. That Coach Rodriguez inspires the hell out of his players before the second half. That the players play a complete second half. The program needs this win. Badly. Expectations are low, but it can be done.
Michigan releases details of internal audit

Focus is on possible NCAA violations by the Wolverines.

The University of Michigan on Monday released details of an internal audit that discovered Rich Rodriguez's team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season -- his first -- and the off-season last spring.

Devin Gardner and Vincent Smith: The Next Great U-M Backfield Duo

One hasn't even set foot on campus yet, while another is making a stir in the Michigan backfield.
They are Devin Gardner and Vincent Smith, Michigan present and future.
Both have oozing potential and should be important players in the coming years for the Maize and Blue.
How soon is the question.
Freshman quarterback Tate Forcier seemed to have the position locked down for years to come after gutsy performances against Notre Dame and Michigan State. However, after a series of losses and some rather questionable performances from Forcier, the future at the position seems to be up in the air.
His durability and small size are a question and he doesn't seem like the glove to fit the hand of Rich Rodriguez's spread offense.
Denard Robinson is the type of athlete that could work at the quarterback position, but that is provided that he learns how to effectively throw the ball down the field.
The man who is throwing passes and running past defenders in the Michigan high school playoffs ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Devin Gardner, Rich Rodriguez

College football's winningest program just took another hit off the field.

The University of Michigan released embarrassing details of an internal audit Monday that discovered Rich Rodriguez's team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season - his first - and the offseason last spring.

Perhaps coincidentally, the NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Rich Rodriguez

What We Learned: Things about to get worse for Michigan

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes what Monday's buzz means to college football.
A turn for the worse
For those who think Michigan's slide since September has hurt coach Rich Rodriguez in Ann Arbor, it's about to get much, much worse.
The Detroit News reported that the Michigan program in 2008 failed to file required logs used to keep track of how many hours players practiced and worked out. An internal university audit revealed the CARA (countable athletically related activities) logs—which the university uses to stay in compliance with NCAA rules—were missing.
The NCAA, of course, is investigating allegations made by players that Rodriguez and his staff worked players beyond the NCAA's 20-hour limit. The missing logs won't bode well for Rodriguez—with the NCAA or the university. Connect the dots, and it starts to look ugly for Rodriguez—a lot worse than the six losses in the last seven games. When he left West Virginia two years ago, he and his staff were accused of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Louisville Cardinals, Texas Longhorns, Rich Rodriguez

Michigan AD says Rodriguez's job not in jeopardy

                    Sporting News staff reports

Michigan athletic director Bill Martin, the man who hired Rich Rodriguez as football coach, told the Detroit News that Rodriguez's job is secure.
Rodriguez, who is finishing off his second season with the Wolverines, watched the team explode out of the gate with four impressive wins but has since suffered through five losses in six games. Michigan remains one game away from bowl eligibility with tough games left against Wisconsin and Ohio State. The five losses all have come against Big Ten teams with the last win against Delaware State.

Martin, who will retire on Sept 4, 2010, vociferously defended Rodriguez in a Monday interview.

"He's not going anyplace," Martin told the newspaper. "Rich is an outstanding coach. There is no question he's got my total support. I think the world of that guy. Is he perfect in every respect? Nobody is. But he works hard.
