COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Maybe the right arm on John Heisman's bronze statuette isn't fending off an invisible defender. Maybe he's reaching out, hoping one of this year's biggest stars finally will grab the trophy in the season's final few days. Cue Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, who emerged from his team's 49-39 victory over Texas A&M as the Heisman Trophy favorite. His 479 yards total offense, including 175 on the ground (and a 65-yard TD run off a zone read), kept the No. 3 Longhorns in the national title hunt. "For my money, he's the best player in the country," UT offensive coordinator Greg Davis said afterward. But McCoy isn't the only player worthy of that description. Does Anyone Want To Win The 2009 Heisman Trophy?

As we come to the end of the 2009 college football season, it seems that no one is talking about this year's Heisman Trophy race. Usually this late in the season there is one or two candidates that are the true front-runners for the award. That is not the case this season. Regardless, the award will be given on December 12, 2009. Tim Tebow started the season as the front runner with Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy rounding out the top three candidates. However, Sam Bradford's shoulder injury ended his season and collegiate career, and Tim Tebow has not been as productive this season as predicted. Colt McCoy remains a viable candidate, and others have caught the eyes of the college football world. Here is my list of the Top Five candidates for the 2009 Heisman Trophy. Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators steam rolled over Florida International University. The Gators jumped on the Golden Panthers, as if there ever was any doubt. One thing has become clear for the Florida Gators, they are absolutely and certainly bored. Sure, they will absolutely trample the cupcakes of college football, and they will win ugly against all other opponents. But win they do. They've come to a point when they just don't care to go all out or do anything special. Tim Tebow was being 100 percent honest when he said he didn't care about winning the Heisman, he just wants to go undefeated. Last season after the loss to Ole Miss this team was beyond a doubt the most motivated team in the nation and it showed. Tebow was determined, he was possessed. At this point in a season the Heisman Trophy race has probably never been more congested. There's simply no clear-cut leader right now. Over the years the Heisman trophy has become an exclusive award for only quarterbacks, and the occasional running back. Wide receivers and defensive players often get wrongly overlooked. It looks like it will happen again this season. There are a handful of players who are deserving of the Heisman trophy who aren't quarterbacks this year. One of those players that will most likely miss out on the award is Clemson's C.J. Spiller. This guy is an absolute game changer at the running back position and has single handily taken Clemson to the ACC championship game. Another very worthy candidate who has just recently emerged as a candidate is Standford running back Toby Gerhart. The Official Website of the Heisman Trophy tells us that the Heisman Committee, "will award the annual Heisman Memorial Trophy to an individual who deserves designation as the most outstanding college football player in the United States." The thing is, Tim Tebow's name is still thrown around quite a bit. Tebow ranks 84th in the country in passing. Awarding the trophy to a quarterback who been outperformed statistically by 83 other players would be an outright joke. There has been a lot of talk about which non-BCS school will make a run at the title and if big conference teams can hold them off. The truth is, the two teams that play for the national title may or may not be the best two teams in college football, including a Texas-Florida championship game. This year, the controversy comes from the fact that there are no great teams, just a bunch of really good ones. My top three 1. Texas Longhorns The Longhorn defense has been very stifling this year, holding opponents to just over 12 points per game.
