Cullen Harper Benched, Willy Korn In for Clemson: Is This Just a Show?

Tommy Bowden said in his press conference yesterday that he will bench quarterback Cullen Harper and put in local product Willy Korn in his stead. When I heard the news, it made me smile, and I was excited about the time in front of us. Then I began to wonder if this is all just a scheme to help Bowden keep his job, and get the focus off of him. I believe it is. Clemson fans have been waiting on Korn since he was in high school, and now in Bowden's time of crisis he does something that should have been done at the beginning of the year, before our team lost everything this season. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited to see him play in a meaningful game, but don't let this take the pressure off of Bowden. Yes, we can win out (doubt it), and I have seen crazier things happen. But I just hope that this little stunt will not take our attention away from the true problem—COACHING!!!

My Thoughts on the Tommy Bowden Situation

OK, here are my thoughts on the whole Tommy Bowden situation. Like all of the fans, I have had enough of the same old stuff every year and every week. We hear the hype but never see the improvement. Tommy has just benched Cullen (a little late don't you think?) and is now bringing in Korn (finally). But part of me just sees this as a stunt to keep his job and put fans in the stands. The Valley WILL be rockin' when Willy steps on the field, don't get me wrong, but this still doesn't solve our major problem which is...yes, you guessed it...COACHING!!! We were a preseason No. 9 with all the talent in the NCAA, and what do we get? NOTHING, just a another piss-poor year, and watching a team that is so poorly coached that we can't win a game that was handed to us. Putting in Willy is a big step, but firing Spence will make the pain a little less powerful. Just admit it, guys. Our offense sucks, absolutely sucks. No surprises at all. After the Clemson-Maryland game this year, I wrote an article telling Tiger fans they deserved better than Tommy Bowden. Little did I know that this article would turn into a series. I have friends, family, and co-workers that love the Tigers. Some are lifelong Tiger fans. Tommy Bowden, only your immediate family is behind you anymore. Look, there have been nice moments during Bowden's tenure. He took a 3-9 squad from Tommy West and immediately made Clemson competitive again. There was the 9-0 start in 2000 and the No. 4 ranking before losing to Georgia Tech, 31-28, in Death Valley. You have the 2003 Peach Bowl victory over Tennessee, the multiple wins over Florida State, and the 7-2 record over arch rival South Carolina. Already this season, though, was the national embarrassment against Alabama, the second-half coaching debacle against Maryland, and last night's sad effort off a bye week in a 12-7, lucky it wasn't a three-touchdown loss to Wake Forest. Clemson coach Tommy Bowden is changing quarterbacks, benching preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year Cullen Harper in favor of backup Willy Korn. Bowden says he made the decision Friday afternoon after watching tape of the Tigers 12-7 loss at Wake Forest the night before. The Tigers play next at home against Georgia Tech on Oct. 18. Bowden said he had to do something to spark the team, which is 3-3 with two conference losses.

Both teams entered the 2008 season with high hopes of being undefeated up to this point, but both are left with two L’s on the right side of their records. Many had high hopes for the Tigers pulling off a BCS title run based on talent and an easy ACC schedule that didn’t include Virginia Tech. Little did everybody know they would run into a brick wall in the Georgia Dome against Saban’s highly underrated Tide team.
