Trying To Scale Mount Cody with Mr. Two-Bits

Defending charges that the Gators have rooked their way to this year's SEC Championship game, that Urban Meyer is a fraud, and that it's Alabama's year have me all jumbled up this morning.
One of my teaching colleagues has unearthed her "Roll Tide" hoodie and is gallivanting through the halls of our school donning proudly her Crimson regalia.
While yet another, our athletic director, has just placed upon my desk a ripped-out page from the latest edition of Sports Illustrated . It's apparently (I haven't read nor seen the piece), an article about Urban Meyer. In it, there's a pictorial "time-line" of Meyer's transformation from assistant coach at Ohio State up to his current position as head coach at Florida. Do I have to contend with the "Sports Illustrated Curse," too?
Lastly, I'm getting emails from friends in Florida admonishing me not to fret as they make their collective journeys to Atlanta.
And I'm feeling like I'm on an island up her in Jersey trying to defend the honor of one of my ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Sports Illustrated, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes

ND job may be more appealing this time (AP)

The biggest challenge Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick faces as he searches for a replacement for Charlie Weis is finding somebody who believes the job is as good as Fighting Irish fans do. It's been a problem for the Irish in recent coaching searches. During the last search after the 2004 season they couldn't interest Urban Meyer even though he called it his "dream...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Urban Meyer

Carlos Dunlap Out For Florida For The SEC Championship Game Against Alabama

Following today's practice, Urban Meyer announced that Carlos Dunlap is "suspended indefinitely" after his arrest for DUI early this morning. As a result, Dunlap will not play in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama this Saturday.
Dunlap was out drinking with other members of the team according to Dunlap's father, Carlos Dunlap Sr. He said Dunlap had managed to make it almost back to his apartment before falling asleep at the wheel of a car with the engine running in gear at a green light.
Dunlap Sr. said the player tried to get the police to let him walk home, but they declined.
Dunlap would not allow police to give him a breathalyzer test. However, he failed a regular field sobriety test at the scene and was immediately arrested.
Not only will this foolishness cost Florida one of their best players before the two biggest games of the season, but it may cost Dunlap millions in signing bonus money.
He was projected to be a Top 10 pick in the NFL draft.
According to Dunlap Sr., Meyer ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Carlos Dunlap, Urban Meyer, Alabama Crimson Tide

                    Sporting News staff reports

Florida star Carlos Dunlap is suspended from Saturday's SEC Championship Game after the defensive end was arrested for DUI Tuesday morning.
"I haven't talked to Carlos and his family yet, but obviously he's not going to play," said Gators coach Urban Meyer after Tuesday's practice.
Junior Justin Trattou will likely start in Dunlap's place against Alabama.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Carlos Dunlap, Urban Meyer, Alabama Crimson Tide

Top 10 Candidates for College Football Coach of the Year

It's not easy being a coach. Just ask the now departed Charlie Weis.

These guys show up each week with a game plan and hope to high heaven that things go exactly as they are drawn up—if they do, gold. If they don't, well, be sure to duck on your way out of the stadium.

However, each year brings forth a batch of coaches who defy the odds and find their way through to a season so fruitful, that you have to give them their props on a job well done.

This season's crop has some familiar names but also a few that may not be quite as vaunted as the others—the top 10 candidates for coach of the year are....
Notre Dame set to begin coaching search (AP)

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick has begun the work of trying to find a new coach for the Fighting Irish. While Fighting Irish fans hoped to hear word that Swarbrick was spotted in in Gainesville, Fla., going after Urban Meyer or in Norman, Okla., for a talk with Bob Stoops, Swarbrick remained on campus Tuesday laying the groundwork for his search.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops

Florida Star Defensive End Arrested on DUI Charges; Could That Help Alabama?

Urban Meyer's problems with off-field incidents with the players continue as the Gators top defensive end and probable first-round NFL draft choice was arrested on DUI charges early this morning while stopped at a green light.
Falling asleep drunk at a red light and having a policeman walk up to your car to wake you up after the light had gone through several cycles is not exactly a good way to deter detection.
Officer Robert Rogers approached the red 2000 Chrysler at about 3:25 this morning to find the occupant drunk and asleep at the wheel.
Despite the officer yelling at him, he drifted back into sleep until finally being taken from the car.
Failing to both pass both the field sobriety test and the ability even to speak clearly, he was arrested and taken to jail.
Dunlap was the defensive MVP of last year's national championship game and is currently tied for the team lead with seven sacks. His loss is a huge blow as he also leads the team in QB hurries.
No word yet from Urban Meyer. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, Urban Meyer

Florida Gators: Been A Long Road

Wayne Peace was the quarterback for the University of Florida back in the early 1980's.
So what?
Contrary to popular belief, the Gators have not always been that dominant team. In fact, there was a time that they were referred to as, "The Choking Gators."
I know. I've spent most of my life as a fan and alumnus.
But, they came into their own beginning in the 1980's.
As a student, I'd go to every home game for five years. I'd go to many away games too.
I can clearly remember Wayne Peace quarterbacking Florida. I can also clearly remember the moaning and groaning of fans who thought our offense was too conservative.
Peace used to have this patented pass play where he'd sort of sprint out to his right or left and throw to a receiver just off the line and wide on either side. Kind of a "sideways" pass.
The offensive coordinator called it "stretching the defense horizontally." It was sort of a unique offensive concept. We weren't too familiar with it, but we'd adjust to the move, much to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Austin Long, Urban Meyer

Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer: You Survived, Alabama

Alabama scored their first win in Auburn since God was a boy. We saw no toilet paper on trees. No screams of "Go To Hell, Alabama!" after the game, and everyone (apart from 10,000-20,000 Alabama fans who made the trip to Jordan Hare Stadium) went home a little bit sad. In fact, it wouldn't have been easy to sort out this BCS mess if Alabama had lost, because then if they beat Florida (who we can confidently predict won't play as badly as Texas or Alabama did over the last two days), who would face Texas (who we confidently predict will hammer Nebraska next week) in the National Title game? Would Boise or TCU have their wish? Or would it be Cincinnati? Or...? Or....? Anyway, we know about rivalry games that they are always going to be battles. They generally aren't won by 400 points by either side, and it's all about passion and, as we Brits say, "wanting it more." There's no question that both teams wanted it more. The tackles were flying from all directions. The problem with Auburn is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Gene Chizik, Urban Meyer

Alabama Faces Florida in the SEC Championship Game For the BCS Title

Yes, you read that right. It wasn't a poorly conceived headline. Alabama and Florida are actually playing for the BCS National Championship on December 5, 2009 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA.
Oh sure, they are playing for the SEC Championship as well, but lets face it, the winner of this game will most likely win the BCS National Championship game when it's played in Pasadena, CA on January 7, 2010.
So for all intents and purposes, this game between the two top teams in the SEC will decide who is to be crowned the BCS National Champion in January. The game itself is just a formality.
Why do I believe that you ask?
Because for the last 11 years, no matter who the opponent has been, the SEC Champion has beaten all comers in the previous BCS Championship games—that is when they were allowed to participate.
So I would have to say that if the SEC Champion were to lose to whomever the BCS chooses for an opponent in the BCS title game, it would have to be considered an upset of monumental ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, Bowl Championship Series, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer

State of the Arizona Cardinals, as They Prepare for Titans

Losing rookie backer Will Davis for 4-6 weeks is a blow to a defense. There is hope he can play again this season, as he was coming on strong with two sacks, twelve tackles and increased playing time.
Now more than ever the Cardinals need Chike Okeafor to battle through his back issues and get back on the field. Though he has missed the last two games, he is still tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks. The immediate future looks bright as Okeafor participated in practice this week and will likely play.
Having the luxury of signing Monty Biesel off the street is fortunate though. Biesel was on Kansas City's roster briefly this season, and has 43 games with the Cardinals under his belt. Biesel can fill in admirably at linebacker and is a special teams warrior.
One quiet development of late is receiver Early Doucet apparently passing Jerheme Urban on the depth chart. Although it is still not reflected officially on the team-issued depth chart , Urban was a healthy inactive two ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Urban Meyer, Chike Okeafor, Early Doucet, Matt Leinart

BCS Bowl Predictions: Pitt In, Cincy Out

After yet another ho-hum weekend of a forgettable college football season, it's finally starting to get exciting.
All this noise about the BCS and the regular season isn't just noise anymore.
Fraught with intriguing story lines, bitter rivalries, Monte Carlo-like revenge, and BCS-or-bust championship games, the next two weeks of college football with will feature some of the most compelling and meaningful games of the season.
Finally.
Three games in particular will feature a head-to-head battle for a BCS game. The winner will go on to play on the big stage, while the loser will likely be destined for "just-another" December Bowl. The games to watch are:
No.5 Cincinnati at No. 9 Pittsburgh No. 16 Oregon State at No. 8 Oregon No. 7 Georgia Tech vs. No. 18 Clemson
Not to mention the National Championship semi-final,otherwise knows as the SEC Championship Game, has yet to be played as well. Another intriguing story line. Another hate-filled, storybook SEC rivalry in the brewing.

What We Learned: Mike Leach entertains again

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes what Monday's buzz means to college football.
Friends in high places
As a devout college football nut, here's yet another reason to dislike the NFL: Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a Michigan alumnus, told The Associated Press that if coach Rich Rodriguez, "has a bad year next year, he'll have a lot more pressure."
This is what happens when you give $100 million to a school, when it renames the business school in your honor and when, yeah, you've suddenly earned clout. Ross said he thinks Rodriguez is a "great man, and he's been a proven winner wherever he's been."
That's great, Steve. End it there. Don't add more fuel to the vocal fringe element that wants to run Rod after two years. No matter what Ross said—he could've said Rodriguez will be the coach at Michigan for 20 years—the only thing people read and here is "if he has a bad year next year …"
Understand this, people: you can't completely change the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Mike Leach, Michigan Wolverines, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Rich Rodriguez, Urban Meyer

The Florida Gators Are Poets of Destiny: A Fan's Poem

The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they have defined recent times through actions and results translated into words.
The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they have defined recent times through principles and standards translated into relevance.
The meaning we place on their performance should take into account our view of the team as a whole. Their weekly effort is the primary connection between people and poets who write beautiful verses between the lines.
The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they inspire their nation with identity and spirit that lifts them to new heights.
The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they inspire their nation with voice and vision that leads them to championships.
Fly me to the swamp.
Let rise the balloon of popularity, the blimp's view -
To millions, connected to people like me.
Pan left, pan right, I soared with my fan.
