Falcons-Giants a matchup of the bruised, battered and desperate

Both the Giants and Falcons need a win badly. Both teams are 5-4, slumping and hampered by injuries.
The Giants learned Friday that middle linebacker Antonio Pierce would be out indefinitely with a neck injury. Falcons star running back Michael Turner (high ankle sprain) is not expected to play, either.
Falcons will lean on tight end Tony Gonzalez in third-down situations against the Giants.

A loss could be devastating for the Giants, riding a four-game losing streak after a 5-0 start. Quarterback Eli Manning says both the Giants and Falcons will play with a sense of desperation today.
"We are in similar situations," Manning said. "We know they will come ready to play. They have lost three of their last four, and so they are going to feel they have something to prove, just like us."
A look at five players who must step up:
  1. Tony Gonzalez, TE, Falcons . These are the kind of games Falcons officials had in mind when they traded for Gonzalez. If Gonzalez can ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Tony Gonzalez, Matt Ryan, Aaron Ross, Justin Tuck, Atlanta Falcons

Aaron Ross took another step toward making his season debut tomorrow by working out at safety -- yup, safety -- yesterday.
But head coach Tom Coughlin insisted afterward not too much should be made of the switch.

Ross' return could come at safety

Aaron Ross seems to be on track for a return to the starting lineup, but he might be returning at a different position.

The former starting cornerback took some snaps with the second team defense at safety during the Giants’ practice this afternoon. Tom Coughlin said that was done more because the Giants have a shortage of numbers at that position, but Ross sounded like a player ready and willing to make the switch.

“I can (play safety),” Ross said. “I don’t know if I’m going to or not, but I can.”

Coughlin emphasized that Ross “is a corner”. And when he was asked if Ross could play another position in a game, he said “Not at this point in time. But you never know.”

It’s probably more likely that Ross would see time in a safety-like position in nickel or dime defenses. He said he often played like that on passing downs in Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive scheme the last two years.

“The way we played nickel ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Aaron Ross

Third time is a charm for Ross

In his third attempt to come back from this thrice-injured hamstring, Giants defensive back Aaron Ross has managed to practice for three straight days.

He was out on the field this afternoon working with the second-team defense during the small portion of practice open to the media. Though it’s still unclear whether he’ll be active for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, it certainly appears as if things are headed that way.

In fact, Tom Coughlin could have some very interesting roster decisions on Sunday since all 53 players on his active roster are practicing again, including RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot). Nobody is expected to miss Sunday’s game due to an injury.

That actually will make Ross a tough fit. The only defensive back who seems a lock not to dress is Dominique Johnson, the rookie who was acquired last week from the Denver Broncos’ practice squad. If you figure the usual suspects also won’t dress — T Guy Whimper, C Adam Koets, RB ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Aaron Ross

Giants CB Ross ready to make 2009 debut

After missing the first nine games of the season with a severe hamstring strain, New York Giants cornerback Aaron Ross is poised to make his 2009 debut Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Ross continued to practice at full speed Thursday, his third practice since returning to action. While the coaching staff has not made any determination about Ross' playing status or whether he will be in the starting lineup, Ross just wants to be playing again.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Aaron Ross, Atlanta Falcons

All looks well on the injury front

Hey everybody, filling in for Ralph today. All the Giants were on the field today for practice. CB Aaron Ross was out there and RB Ahmad Bradshaw scrapped the boot too and switched up his normal schedule and practiced today.

I’ll update you later when coach Tom Coughlin meets with the media. So strange not to be writing a ton of Giants players’ names with injuries next to them in this blog for once.

Ross still on track for season debut

Cornerback Aaron Ross is practicing again and it’s starting to sound like he’s going to make his season debut on Sunday afternoon.

The thrice-injured former starter is participating in his third consecutive practice, though he is expected to be limited. If his hurtin’ hamstring doesn’t have any setbacks during the week he’ll probably see that action increase.

That, said coach Tom Coughlin, is entirely up to him.

“We’re just trying to bring him along and give him more opportunities and take off any kind of limitations that are there,” Coughlin said. “It’s his job to prove to us that there is no limitation. Right now he’s still limited and we’ll go from there.”

For what it’s worth, Ross’ fiancé, Sanya Richards said this morning via Twitter that “Ross plays his first game this weekend! We’re all soooo excited!!!”
