Harris and Kampman Done For the Year? No Worries

Packers fans need to relax. Simply, relax. Their team will be just fine even with the injuries to two of their leaders on defense. I would never say losing anyone for the year is ever a good thing, especially when it looked like the defense was turning the corner, but not all is lost with the injuries. These setbacks will only allow the defense to get young again and grow even stronger. Let's start with Kampman. Much attention has been given to his conversion to a LB this season. I had some optimism that Dom would be able to do exactly what Kevin Greene did to AK-74. That has not been the case. Kampman has struggled at both dropping in to coverage, as well as rushing the passer with his hand not in the dirt. He's been starting this year because of his name and past performance. It has been the young OLBs that have impressed the most. This goes back to the beginning of training camp when Jeremy Thompson and Clay Matthews were drawing rave reviews. Green Bay cornerback Al Harris and linebacker Aaron Kampman will both have season-ending knee surgery. Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that losing the two veterans will be a major challenge to the Packers, who have a 6-4 record and are in the middle of the NFC wild card race after Sunday's victory over San Francisco. With a Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit just three days away, McCarthy says coaches still are considering their options at each position.

Green Bay Packers Lose Aaron Kampman, Al Harris For Season

Green Bay escaped with a close 30-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 11, but not without some serious casualties on defense. The Packers improving defense lost both OLB Aaron Kampman and CB Al Harris to ACL tears on Sunday, and both players are expected to miss the remainder of the season. Both of these potentially catastrophic injuries will test the Packers new 3-4 defense, and could decimate a defense that shined in a win over the Dallas Cowboys last week. Kampman was having a down year after switching from the defensive line to the outside as a linebacker. The 34-year-old Harris was regarded as "slowing down," despite being the Packers second-best cover corner. The injuries could likely thrust either Brandon Chillar or Brady Poppinga into the starting lineup. Either could be interesting IDP plays, particularly the crafty and athletic Chillar.
