Eagles WR Jackson out against Falcons

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson and three other Philadelphia Eagles have been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Jackson, who leads the Eagles with eight touchdowns this season, suffered a concussion in last week's win over the Washington Redskins.

"He felt pretty good today, but he's not all the way back yet," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He still has some normal headaches. He's just not ready yet.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, DeSean Jackson, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, Andy Reid

Portis might miss Dec. 13 game at Oakland

Running back Clinton Portis might sit out next week's road game against the Oakland Raiders because of lingering affects from a concussion. On Monday, Portis will travel to Pittsburgh to be examined again by concussion specialists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today at Redskins Park. After the two-day evaluation, Portis is scheduled to return to Redskins Park on Wednesday. It seems highly unlikely that Portis, who as of this week still was experiencing dizziness during workouts, would play in the game at Oakland. "He still has a little bit of dizziness or just not feeling right," Zorn said.

Injury report: Hall doubtful, Sellers probable

Top cornerback DeAngelo Hall (knee) will be listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, but Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) remained on track to start, Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today at Redskins Park. "He still has been able to work laterally like we want," Zorn said. "But we still have 48 hours, so we're going to continue to work with him. Albert was limited again today. He went on it, he got some reps, he's still questionable." Fullback Mike Sellers (ankle) will be listed as probable and nickel cornerback Justin Tryon (hip) "is questionable," Zorn said, "but he's probably going to be there." Although Zorn expressed optimism about Haynesworth, who sat out the last two games, playing against the Saints, "I've got to list him as questionable because he really was limited today," he said. "He's still working through it, but he's

Haynesworth plans to play Sunday vs. Saints

After sitting out the last two games because of an ankle injury, Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth plans to play Sunday against the new Orleans Saints at FedEx Field. "Yeah, that's what we're shooting for," Haynesworth said. "The guys have done a great job, and I knew they would, and I just want to get back out there and help. We still have a lot to play for, so we just have to keep working right now. That's all you can do." The Redskins have missed Haynesworth's presence along the line. He is second to none in the league at collapsing the pocket from an interior position, and they could have used him in consecutive losses to NFC East division rivals Dallas and Philadelphia. "After the [Dallas] game, one of the coaches told me we needed you in there on" quarterback Tony Romo's late touchdown pass, Haynesworth said. "It's

Jerry Gray remembers Brees in high school

Secondary coach Jerry Gray was an All-American at the University of Texas and still has strong ties to the Austin area. Gray remembers once watching a high school quarterback in Austin and thinking the kid might make something of himself one day. Well, Drew Brees apparently turned out okay. "I knew Drew when he played in high school; he played high school right there in Austin," Gray said. "He was a really good football player. Everyone always tended to underestimate him because nobody in the state of Texas recruited him. That's why he left the state and went to Purdue - but we're not going to hold that against him. Drew is a great guy."

Zorn knows a hot QB when he sees one

Quarterback Drew Brees torched the New England Patriots' defense for five touchdown passes Monday night in the New Orleans Saints' 38-17 victory. With many young players in key roles, the Patriots' defense is in transition. It's hardly the formidable group it was during the team's Super Bowl runs, but several of the Saints' receivers were well covered Monday. poll by twiigs.com Brees didn't care. He is playing the quarterback position at an incredible level, and he made many perfect throws to beat tight coverage. The Redskins have the NFC's top-rated pass defense (they're second in the NFL to the Jets in yards per game--167 to 170.4), at least statistically, but facing Brees and the Saints on Sunday at FedEx Field will be by far the biggest test this season for Gregg Blache's bunch. The Redskins have seven interceptions and 27 sacks; Brees has thrown nine interceptions and been sacked 14

Haynesworth is likely to be available Sunday

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth continued to participate in practice and is on track to return to the lineup Sunday against the New Orleans Saints at FedEx Field, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice. Haynesworth, who sat out the last two games because of an ankle injury, "looked quick at some points, but there's a fine line," Zorn said. "If he works hard right now, I don't want him to re-injure it. We're just injecting him [slowly into practice], and he looks like he's going to be available. That's for sure." On Wednesday, cornerback DeAngelo Hall (knee) all but ruled himself out of the game, but the Redskins remain hopeful about having him on the active roster. "DeAngelo did a lot of footwork drills but did not participate in practice," Zorn said. "He was just off to the side working with the trainers, trying to get any kind of stability

Kelly says he and Thomas 'feed off each other'

Second-year wide receivers Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas and tight end Fred Davis have made more plays recently while showing signs of developing a productive partnership with quarterback Jason Campbell. Of course, it could all end soon. Coach Jim Zorn is not expected to return for the 2010 season, a new coach might scrap Zorn's version of the West Coast offense and Campbell will be a restricted free agent after the Super Bowl. The Redskins have invested a lot in Campbell, Kelly, Thomas and Davis, and Kelly hopes they get the opportunity to continue to grow together. Injured tight end Chris Cooley "used to be really Jason's No. 1 target, and now that Fred has jumped into that spot, now it's Fred," Kelly said. "He's getting his confidence up every week. And as the weeks go on, Jason seems to have more confidence in throwing the ball down the field

Gray knows what to expect from Williams' defense

Secondary coach Jerry Gray played under New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and coached under him with the Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills and Redskins. "I know Gregg," Gray said. And so Gray knows that Williams probably will use his full assortment of exotic blitz packages in an effort to make things difficult for quarterback Jason Campbell and Washington's offense Sunday at FedEx Field. Why? Because that's what Williams does, Gray said. "He's going to do what he does," Gray said. "And to me, I don't think he should back off. Because again, he's always done that." After briefly considering hiring Williams as head coach following the 2007 season, owner Daniel Snyder fired Williams, whose defenses were ranked among the top 10 in the league during three of his four seasons in Washington. "He's going to try to pick and choose what's the right time to blitz and what's the

Jarmon vows to 'pick up where I left off'

Rookie defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon was upbeat despite being on crutches because of a season-ending knee injury that occurred during Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Jarmon, a supplemental draft pick by the Redskins this summer, had made a positive impression on coaches while playing in every game. He plans to undergo surgery early next week and is eager to begin the rehab process in an effort to be ready for next season. "I felt like I got off to a good start, I continued to improve," said Jarmon, who was hurt on kickoff coverage. "Going into that game, I was doing well. I started off pretty good, made some good plays, made some things happen. "I think the coaches saw one thing is that I was just going to continue to elevate my play with increased playing time. This is a setback. But when I get back, and

McIntosh: Skins defense knows what it must do

Weak-side linebacker Rocky McIntosh believes the Redskins' run defense is better than its 25th-place ranking in the NFL would indicate. "We've just given up a few long runs, that's why were not ranked that high," McIntosh said. "But we know what type of defense we are. We just take of that, and we'll be fine. Guys know what we have to do." The Redskins have the top-ranked pass defense and are eighth overall in yards per game. The Saints have the league's No. 1 offense and quarterback Drew Brees is having an MVP-caliber season. But the Redskins' defensive players are confident in their scheme and ability to perform well against the Saints. "I feel good. I always feel good," McIntosh said. "Guys want to go out there and try to make plays. Like I said, we know what we have to do." The return of Gregg Williams Many of the

Cool Brees makes winning look easy

Obviously, many Redskins fans are frustrated with Coach Jim Zorn because of the Redskins' 5-14 record in their last 19 games under him. Zorn's credentials as a quarterbacks coach, however, are without question. Zorn helped Matt Hasselbeck become a Pro Bowler when he was the Seattle Seahawks' quarterbacks coach and Jason Campbell has seemed to make strides recently while playing behind a patchwork offensive line, albeit for a 3-8 team. poll by twiigs.com Zorn has studied a lot of tape of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, obviously, andis highly impressed with the nine-year veteran. "Rhythm, accuracy, ball speed, confidence," Zorn said of Brees's strengths. "Just being able to buy an extra little second to avoid the rush and get the ball out, he's been great that way." Brees has led the Saints to a 11 wins this season and the team is threatening a few of the offensive records

Zorn clarifies Portis' condition

Coach Jim Zorn today attempted to clarify some confusion about the medical status of running back Clinton Portis, who has sat out the last three games because of lingering affects from a concussion. During his regular weekly appearance Tuesday on ESPN 990's "The John Thompson Show," Portis, who also has been ruled out from this week's game against the New Orleans Saints, seemed to indicate he had been cleared by a Washington physician to return to the football field, but added he was still experiencing vision problems that would have to improve before he could play. After practice today, Zorn said that Portis, whose vision has at times been blurry since he suffered the concussion Nov. 8 against the Atlanta Falcons, had only received clearance to increase his football-related activity during the week. "He's still a little bit away," Zorn said. "We're trying to push and rest and push and

Saints defense relishes turnovers

With Gregg Williams directing their defense, the New Orleans Saints lead the NFL with 22 interceptions and are tied for second with 10 fumble recoveries. They also lead the league with five interception returns for touchdowns and two touchdowns on recovered fumbles. New Orleans (11-0) is plus-12 in turnover differential, which is one of the main reasons it is undefeated. The Redskins (3-8) are 28th in the league at minus-five. "It's still the No. 1 statistic in football, and that differential, and our ability to get takeaways and reduce 'em on offense helps you win games," New Orleans Coach Sean Payton said. "If you're good at that, you're going to see that result. And if you're not good at that then you're going to see that as well.'

Dealing with pain is new for Hall

The pain has been the worst part for cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who hasn't experienced as much as you would think after all these years in the NFL. Sure, Hall has had the usual assortment of bumps and bruises, but his sprained knee is something different for him. "I've never had this before," he said. "I have a Grade-2 slight sprain of my MCL [medial collateral ligament], so I don't know what that really means. I've never had anything. I'm just kind of playing it all by ear." After suffering the injury in the Week 11 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Hall sat out Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Although Coach Jim Zorn has not ruled out Hall playing this week against the New Orleans Saints, Hall said he probably would not play "unless there's a miracle."

Redskins expect the unexpected from G. Williams

Greg Blache has retained many of the principles of the highly successfully scheme Gregg Williams used when he ran the Redskins' defense for four seasons. Although Washington has remained a top-10 defense since owner Daniel Snyder fired Williams after the 2007 season, Blache is much more conservative with blitzing than his predecessor, defensive players said. The Redskins expect Williams to utilize all his exotic blitz packages when his New Orleans Saints defense plays Sunday at FedEx Field. "Gregg is a great coach," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "We had a good relationship when he was here and we talked a lot, and the thing about Gregg is he doesn't really give teams a chance to learn his tendencies. "He'll bring linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, but he changes it week to week. You may see one package one week and then not see it again for another four weeks. You see stuff on

Campbell: 'Offseason ... will take care of itself'

Coaches have praised quarterback Jason Campbell for his role in the improvement of the offense recently despite the loss of several key players. While playing behind a patchwork offensive line, Campbell the last few weeks has made more plays in the passing game and with his feet than he did earlier in the season, helping the Redskins move the ball. And Campbell also has connected more frequently with second-year wide receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly and tight end Fred Davis. But the bottom line, Campbell said, is that the Redskins are 3-8, so his personal accomplishments don't mean much. "This is your career, this is what you do, and I always work to do the best I can for my team first," Campbell said. "And in this business, no matter the situation, whether it's a good situation or whether it's a bad situation, you're judged on how you handle

Smith praises Campbell's play

Despite playing behind an injury-weakened offensive line, quarterback Jason Campbell has been more productive than he was earlier in the season and the offense has shown signs of improvement recently. In the 27-24 loss in Week 11 to the Philadelphia Eagles, Campbell threw two first-half interceptions that resulted in Eagles field goals. But he also threw two touchdowns, ran for another and often made plays while eluding the pass rush. Although the Redskins are 3-8 and in last place in the NFC East, Campbell recently has made some good things happen. "Jason is doing a great job," offensive coordinator Sherman Smith said. "All of our big plays come through the passing. They all come through Jason. Somehow, he's got to make a play. He scrambles, he throws the ball, he does a good job in the pocket and he throws the ball. Every big play that we've had has been

Cooley: Playcalling is 'a carousel of calls'

Tight end Chris Cooley today shed some light on the Redskins' play-calling process in an interview today on "The SIRIUS Blitz" on SIRIUS NFL Radio. Cooley, speaking with co-hosts Adam Schein and Rich Gannon, provided insight into how the Redskins have installed their weekly game plans, practiced during the week and handled play-calling during games since owner Daniel Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, stripped Zorn of play-calling duties before the Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Cooley said that Sherman Lewis, who was originally hired as an offensive consultant and then given playcalling responsibility, and quarterback Jason Campbell hardly interact during the week, which is highly uncommon for a quarterback and the person directing a team's offense. The Redskins have declined reporters' repeated requests to speak with Lewis. "We have a really weird deal going on right now with the kind of rotation

Redskins know secrets of Williams' success

For the second time in as many seasons since he was fired, Gregg Williams will return to FedEx Field to face the Redskins. Washington's assistant head coach-defense for four seasons, Williams first returned in the 2008 preseason while serving as the Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive coordinator. This time, he's back with the 11-0 New Orleans Saints. Williams is the architect of the Saints' major turnaround on defense, which has helped the NFC South leaders become arguably the NFL's best team. Maintaining the same aggressive approach he took with the Redskins, Williams has transformed the Saints' defense, which last season ranked 23rd in the league in yards and tied for 26th in points, into an attacking group that leads the league with 22 interceptions and is tied for 10th with 26 sacks. Although New Orleans is giving up about the same average yardage per game it did last season, it has reduced

With the Redskins (3-8) firmly entrenched in last place in the NFC East and the goal of a winning season unattainable, it would not be surprising if some players began to lose focus. But Coach Jim Zorn is confident the Redskins will fight to the finish. "I'm going to call for them to dig down deep. They've been doing it all year," Zorn said. "They're not trying to create any fantasy that's not there. We kind of know what the real situation is for us.

The Redskins give up an average of only 170.4 yards per game passing, which ranks first in the NFL. But they are 25th in rushing defense with a 127.9-yard average. Although the Redskins are eighth in total yards (298.3 yards), they have experienced more problems against the run than they envisioned. "Since Atlanta, teams have been trying to run the football" against the Redskins, middle linebacker London Fletcher said. "We know that's an issue we have to deal with. Until you stop a team, until you hold somebody to 50-60-70 yards rushing, you're going to continue to get that attack." In their 31-17 victory over the Redskins, the Falcons rushed for 181 yards with a stunning 6.7-yard average. Atlanta running back Michael Turner gained 166 yards and scored two touchdowns in only 18 rushes. The Philadelphia Eagles rushed for 129 yards and had a 4.2-yard average Sunday in their 27-24

Rookie guard Edwin Williams struggled in his first start Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles and could be replaced this week by tackle-guard Mike Williams. "I thought Edwin did okay," Coach Jim Zorn said. "Now, I've got a decision to make now that Mike Williams is coming back strong, so that's going to be a question mark during the week." Mike Williams returned against Philadelphia after sitting out two games because of an ankle injury. It appears he still can drive block.

Davis frustrated by Cooley injury, losses

The Redskins had planned to feature Chris Cooley and Fred Davis in multiple tight-end formations often this season. But Davis earlier in the season did not display the improvement that coaches had hoped for. And then, in the Oct. 26 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Cooley suffered a lower-leg injury that many in the organization said would end his season. The Redskins today officially assigned Cooley to the season-ending injured-reserve list, meaning he must sit out the final five games. So all of Coach Jim Zorn's ideas about using Cooley-Davis together will be shelved for now and possibly forever. Although he is under contract next season, Zorn is not expected to return in 2010. Will a new head coach find value in having Cooley and Davis on the field together? Will the Redskins remain committed to running a version of the West Coast offense? "I definitely think it would be

Cooley placed on IR (updated)

The Redskins made it official, putting Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley on the season-ending injured-reserve list today because of a lower-leg injury he suffered in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Earlier in the day, Coach Jim Zorn said he planned to put Cooley on the list after he had a conversation with the six-year veteran. That conversation recently took place and Cooley's season is over. Zorn had expressed hope about Cooley returning to play in the season's final month. But team physicians last week determined Cooley needed to be in a walking boot longer, and with the length of the rehab process after the boot is taken off, it has been clear for some time that Cooley probably had played his last game in 2009. Cooley finished with 29 receptions for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Second-year tight end Fred Davis has shown encouraging signs recently starting in

Proceeding cautiously, Redskins want Portis back

As expected, running back Clinton Portis will sit out his third consecutive game because of lingering affects from a concussion, but he still could return this season, Coach Jim Zorn said today. "Clinton Portis is not going to play again for another week," Zorn said. "He is going to have another exam on Monday after our game against New Orleans. ... He may practice some this week, but he's going to be out for the game. We're going to try to get him going and try to see if we can get those symptoms to not continue to reoccur." Portis has not played since suffering the concussion in the Nov. 8 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. As of last week, the eight-year veteran had continued to experience blurry vision. The Redskins at 3-8 and in last place in the NFC East. Even if Portis returns to full strength before the

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson's status is uncertain after he sustained a concussion in Sunday's 27-24 win over Washington.
Jarmon out for the season (updated)

Rookie defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon will miss the last five games after tearing a knee ligament in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and it appears that tight end Chris Cooley will be placed on the season-ending injured-reserve list because of a leg injury he suffered more than a month ago, Coach Jim Zorn said today during his news conference at Redskins Park. Jarmon tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in the 27-24 loss and will undergo surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. To take Jarmon's spot on the 53-man roster, the Redskins plan to sign linebacker Alvin Bowen from their practice squad. In the supplemental draft, the Redskins used their 2010 third-round draft pick to select Jarmon from Kentucky. He impressed in training camp and the preseason and contributed from the outset this season while playing in every game. Left tackle Chris Samuels, right guard Randy

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth said his ankle injury has improved and he expects to play this week against the New Orleans Saints at FedEx Field. "Guys have stepped up and played hard just like I knew they would," said Haynesworth, who has sat out the last two games. "We've been playing hard and the offense has really been moving the ball. "I think the offense has done a good job, and we just have to keep working. I know we'll keep it up. I never doubted that for a minute." Smoot a go for Sunday With the hood from his sweatshirt draped over his head, cornerback Fred Smoot sat at his dressing stall and answered questions about the head injury he sustained late Sunday. Smoot, who started the game, was not in the lineup on the Eagles' go-ahead drive in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but he expects

Kelly making strides along the right route

There have been few positives for the Redskins in their 3-8 season, but second-year wide receiver Malcolm Kelly has shown some encouraging signs recently. Kelly had two catches for 50 yards in Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. After losing the starting flanker position to fellow second-year wideout Devin Thomas earlier this season, Kelly remained focused and continued to work on his route-running, which was among the areas in which coaches said he needed the most improvement. Kelly and his teammates have not given up, he said, but it's not about effort. It's about winning. "You definitely see we have heart, just with the way guys are playing, but having heart isn't enough," Kelly said. "At the same time, we don't look at it like we're just a team that can only give a good effort but isn't good enough to win. "We have a lot of guys out,

On his 'eighth' life, Mason gets another chance

The Redskins brought back running back Marcus Mason because Ladell Betts suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 7-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday. After several stints with Washington, the former Georgetown Prep standout finally made the opening 53-man roster out of training camp, and it was a feel-good story for a team that has had few in another disappointing season. But Mason didn't show much (six rushes for 19 yards) earlier this season in his brief audition for an expanded role, and with Washington carrying five running backs on the active roster at one point and other moves needing to be made because of injuries, Mason got caught in the numbers crunch. Now that he's back, Mason hopes this opportunity leads to a long NFL career. Rock Cartwright will start on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial, Coach Jim Zorn said, but Mason will play.

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth sat out the Redskins' 7-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday because of an ankle injury, and he is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. On Friday, Coach Jim Zorn said Haynesworth's status would be a game-time decision, just as it was a week ago. At this point, however, does it really matter if Haynesworth or any of the Redskins' other top veterans play in the final six games? The Redskins are 3-7 and last in the NFC East. Top running back Clinton Portis has been ruled out of at least another two games because of lingering affects from a concussion, No. 2 back Ladell Betts suffered a season-ending knee injury in the loss to the Cowboys and Zorn is not expected to return in 2010. It appears inevitable Washington will miss the playoffs for the eighth

Redskins plot to limit Jackson's action

When the Redskins last faced wide receiver-punt returner DeSean Jackson, the second-year star scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass and a 67-yard reverse in the Philadelphia Eagles' 27-17 victory in Week 7. Jackson also averaged 10 yards on three returns, including a dazzling 29-yarder. Not surprisingly, Jackson is the focus of another installment of Special Teams Saturday With Lorenzo Alexander. On Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, Washington defensive coordinator Greg Blache and special teams coordinator Danny Smith will spend much of their time focusing on one player: Jackson. A second-round selection in the 2008 draft, Jackson has emerged as one of the league's top big-play threats. He has the ability to score whenever he touches the ball, as the Redskins could attest first-hand, and returning punts often gets him into a groove. Philadelphia's opponents try to contain Jackson with a mixture of directional punting, hang time and coverage. The Redskins

Hall will miss Sunday's game; Rogers to start

Top cornerback DeAngelo Hall (knee) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles and the recently benched Carlos Rogers will start for Hall at Lincoln Financial Field, Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today at Redskins Park. "This is that thing that we were talking about last week. Here's another shot" for Rogers, Zorn said. "And he's had a good week of practice." After repeatedly struggling this season against double moves, Rogers was benched early in Washington's 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 10. Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall utilized a double move in beating Rogers for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Wideout DeSean Jackson used a double move while burning Rogers for a 57-yard touchdown in the second quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles' 27-17 victory in Week 7. Zorn and secondary coach Jerry Gray were encouraged by how Rogers responded to being

Eagles defense thrives under McDermott

Philadelphia Eagles first-year defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was promoted to the position on an interim basis in May because Jim Johnson, the successful group's longtime leader, took a medical leave of absence while battling cancer. Coach Andy Reid removed the interim tag in July as Johnson's health continued to decline. Johnson died shortly after the move was announced. The Eagles' defense has continued to thrive under McDermott, who has held many assistant positions since joining the organization in 1998. McDermott has retained many of the attacking, blitzing principles Johnson utilized in his scheme that helped to elevate Philadelphia among the league's elite defensively during his nine-year tenure.

Eagles' defense presents a challenge for Redskins

The Philadelphia Eagles are tied for third (with Pittsburgh) in the NFL in sacks and rank fourth in interceptions. That means that, obviously, pass protection and ball security will be two important keys Sunday when the Redskins face the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. The Redskins' offense, and its offensive line in particular, face another challenging situation. "We definitely have to do our best to protect the football," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "But at the same time, we can't be afraid to make plays. We can't be afraid to have fun and play at a high level. "With that being said, we understand that we are playing with a defense that moves around a lot and causes a lot of issues and problems. So everybody has to make sure that we are on the same page. If things get a little rough, we can't get frustrated. We have to continue

Redskins say locker room remains united

Defensive end Andre Carter recently said there was no potential for division to develop in the Redskins' locker room over the fact that the defense has mostly performed well and the offense has struggled. Wide receiver Santana Moss agreed. "We're not that kind of team," Moss said. "I feel that every weekend we go out there with the intent to win, still with a 3-7 record. We go out there knowing that we're just a play here and there, a drive here and there, from being better than that opponent. I think the past three weeks we've really been coming together, and playing decently. "Decent as in not where we want to be, but it's better than what we were before. And all you can do is build off of that. I feel very confident in just knowing that I feel like we have something in mind that we know

Hall, Haynesworth remain questionable

If top cornerback DeAngelo Hall sits out Sunday's game in Philadelphia because of a knee injury, Carlos Rogers will join Fred Smoot in the starting lineup, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park. "He's looking good," Zorn said of Hall. "But he's very questionable for the game." Although Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) has improved, he also is still listed as questionable. "Albert was running pretty good straight ahead," Zorn said. "He's still not ready." The Redskins expect veteran tackle-guard Mike Williams (ankle) to play in the game at Lincoln Financial Field, but rookie guard Edwin Williams will remain with the first-team. Williams filled in well after Chad Rinehart suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Week 11 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. "We're going to try to keep that group in there," Zorn said of the offensive line that finished the game against Dallas.

Landry is growing into role as free safety

Although free safety LaRon Landry often has been criticized for his performance this season, he has shown encouraging signs lately, especially in the Week 11 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. In probably his best game of the season, Landry played extremely well in coverage and was credited with five tackles. Safeties coach Steve Jackson recently spoke with Landry about his approach to the position, and the coaching staff was pleased with Landry's outing against Dallas. "We kind of talked to LaRon, and I thought Steve did a great job of getting LaRon to understand that he is a free safety," said secondary coach Jerry Gray, who speaks for the defense. "He has instincts and the natural ability to be a strong, aggressive guy. But as a free safety, you've got to be more calculated. You've got to be more risk-taking, but in the right time. "You can't just waste a

Gray: May the best scheme win

In their 27-17 loss in Week 7 to Philadelphia, the Redskins watched standout Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson score on a 67-yard reverse and a 57-yard touchdown pass. The Redskins don't want that to happen again. "If you take a look, they did a great job right before halftime of getting a big touchdown, and game planning Carlos [Rogers] on a double cut," secondary coach Jerry Gray said. "Then on the reverse, it was one of those desire things, and I thought Jackson did an excellent job. "If you take those two plays out, those plays hurt us, especially on defense. Good teams really don't make wholesale changes, and we're not going to make a wholesale change on defense, and I don't think they're going to make a [wholesale] change on offense. Whoever schemes the best is going to win those games." Have a great day The Redskins will practice

Veteran tackle-guard Mike Williams (ankle) is expected to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, but rookie guard Edwin Williams might make his first career start, Coach Jim Zorn said. "He is going to be available," Zorn said of Mike Williams, who sat out the last two games. "He's trying to work his way as quickly as he can into the mix now. He's got a great attitude. His ankle is a lot better. He's able to move, and move laterally. ... Right now, he's going to be starting from the backup position, but he's working." After sitting out the last game against Dallas, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) hopes to play against the Eagles. ... Rock Cartwright will start at running back, but the recently re-signed Marcus Mason will play, Zorn said. ... With top cornerback DeAngelo Hall (knee) slowed, cornerback Carlos Rogers worked with the

Westbrook's replacement is the real McCoy

With All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook sidelined because of lingering problems from two concussions in a span of four weeks, the Philadelphia Eagles are relying on rookie running back LeSean McCoy. McCoy has rushed for 452 yards (with a 4.3-yard average) and three touchdowns and caught 23 passes for 181 yards. He has been a key contributor for the Eagles (6-4), who are tied for second in the NFC East and play host to the last-pace Redskins (3-7) on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. "I couldn't have predicted what happened" with Westbrook," Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid said. "I'm glad Brian is here to help this kid with the maturation process. Brian's been like a big brother to him. It's hard to put a price on that. "LeSean wants to be a good player. He's worked very hard at it. He has an opportunity now and we'll see how he does

Players, coaches give Gray high marks

Although secondary coach Jerry Gray has not been officially named the new head coach at the University of Memphis, Redskins players and coaches today expressed confidence he would excel in that role. "It's good. It's an opportunity," cornerback Carlos Rogers said. "I know him kinda more than just being my defensive back coach. I think he'll do a really good job down there." Gray is highly respected in the organization. He is considered an excellent teacher and he is extremely organized, which are among the reasons many at the complex would express a sigh of relief if the Tigers went in another direction. But that seems unlikely given the support Gray is believed to have received from Redskins minority owner and Memphis booster Frederick W. Smith, who is chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx. "Just like everyone else who's been here and has moved on, we'll continue on,"

Gray tunes out talk of Memphis job

Secondary coach Jerry Gray today declined to directly address news reports that he will be named the new head coach at the University of Memphis - possibly as early as this week - and preferred to focus on the Redskins' upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles. But Gray acknowledged the situation has been somewhat of a distraction, prompting him to focus even harder on his current duties. "It's tough right now, because if you take a look, we got [the] Philadelphia Eagles this week, and you got a whole bunch of other stuff going, and the distractions are around," Gray said while speaking on behalf of the defense during his weekly media session at Redskins Park. "I think our guys are grown enough to understand that, you know, the distractions are going to be there. But the thing you got to do is still focus in a little bit harder.

McNabb on Campbell: 'No one wants to be benched'

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb has been among Jason Campbell's mentors since Campbell entered the league in 2005. During difficult times, of which Campbell has experienced plenty with the Redskins, he often has reached out to McNabb for advice and guidance. Campbell and McNabb have had many discussions about events this season, including Campbell having been benched for the first time in his NFL career after halftime in the Week 6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. "What we discussed kinda is just between the both of us, but no one wants to be benched," McNabb said today in a conference call with reporters who cover the Redskins. "No one wants to be benched when you're really just not the full problem. There's a lot of things that's going on and a lot of things that can honestly be cleaned up, but I think he handled it well. He did

Redskins plan to sign QB Bartel

The Redskins plan to sign quarterback Richard Bartel from the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad and will release quarterback Andre' Woodson from their practice squad, a league source said. Bartel would be the third quarterback on the active roster. Starter Jason Campbell and backup Todd Collins have been the only active quarterbacks this season.

Rock's chance to roll; a Gray-to-Memphis report

At the beginning of the season, the coaching staff made it clear veteran running back Rock Cartwright would not have a role on offense. The Redskins had four running backs on the opening 53-man roster (they carried five at one point) and Cartwright was last on the depth chart at the position. Although active every week because of his standout work on special teams, Cartwright was he was the odd man out in the backfield mix, barring a catastrophic situation. Well, that's kind of what the Redskins have experienced with their running game. Top back Clinton Portis has sat out the last two games because of lingering vision problems from a concussion and backup Ladell Betts suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 7-6 Week 11 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Cartwright stepped up when Betts went down, contributing 67 yards rushing (with a 5.2-yard average) and team-highs with seven

Betts may have played his last game with Redskins

Running back Ladell Betts, who will miss the remainder of the season because of torn knee ligaments, is under contract through the 2013 season. But Betts, 30, is not guaranteed money beyond this season, in which he has a base salary of $900,000 and is due another $450,000 in roster and workout bonuses. His base salary increases to $1.65 million next season, but considering the long rehabilitation process involved with torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, it appears Betts has played his last game for the Redskins after having been selected by the team in the second round (No. 56 overall) in the 2002 draft. "I plan to be around the team for the rest of the year, the only time I wouldn't be is if I have to leave to have the surgery," Betts said. "All I'm really thinking about right now is getting my knee right so

Zorn reveals that he called 8 plays Sunday

During his weekly appearance today on ESPN 980's "The Jim Zorn Show," Redskins Coach Jim Zorn revealed that he called eight plays in the Redskins' 7-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. "They were just within the ... they weren't first-down plays," Zorn said. "Unless it was a two-minute drill. I called most of the two-minute drill." Zorn has previously acknowledged he retained play-calling duties in two-minute drills, and it was Zorn, not primary play-caller Sherman Lewis, who again directed the offense in those situations against the Cowboys. So Zorn also called eight plays that were not in the final two minutes of the first or second halves, Lewis continued to call "the bulk of the passes," Zorn said, and offensive coordinator Sherman Smith handled most of the running game. Owner Daniel Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, stripped Zorn of most of the play-calling decisions
