Wide receiver DeSean Jackson and three other Philadelphia Eagles have been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Portis might miss Dec. 13 game at Oakland

Running back Clinton Portis might sit out next week's road game against the Oakland Raiders because of lingering affects from a concussion. On Monday, Portis will travel to Pittsburgh to be examined again by concussion specialists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today at Redskins Park. After the two-day evaluation, Portis is scheduled to return to Redskins Park on Wednesday. It seems highly unlikely that Portis, who as of this week still was experiencing dizziness during workouts, would play in the game at Oakland. "He still has a little bit of dizziness or just not feeling right," Zorn said.

Jerry Gray remembers Brees in high school

Secondary coach Jerry Gray was an All-American at the University of Texas and still has strong ties to the Austin area. Gray remembers once watching a high school quarterback in Austin and thinking the kid might make something of himself one day. Well, Drew Brees apparently turned out okay. "I knew Drew when he played in high school; he played high school right there in Austin," Gray said. "He was a really good football player. Everyone always tended to underestimate him because nobody in the state of Texas recruited him. That's why he left the state and went to Purdue - but we're not going to hold that against him. Dealing with pain is new for Hall

The pain has been the worst part for cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who hasn't experienced as much as you would think after all these years in the NFL. Sure, Hall has had the usual assortment of bumps and bruises, but his sprained knee is something different for him. "I've never had this before," he said. "I have a Grade-2 slight sprain of my MCL [medial collateral ligament], so I don't know what that really means. I've never had anything. I'm just kind of playing it all by ear." Rookie defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon will miss the last five games after tearing a knee ligament in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and it appears that tight end Chris Cooley will be placed on the season-ending injured-reserve list because of a leg injury he suffered more than a month ago, Coach Jim Zorn said today during his news conference at Redskins Park. Jarmon tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in the 27-24 loss and will undergo surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. To take Jarmon's spot on the 53-man roster, the Redskins plan to sign linebacker Alvin Bowen from their practice squad. After several stints with Washington, the former Georgetown Prep standout finally made the opening 53-man roster out of training camp, and it was a feel-good story for a team that has had few in another disappointing season. Eagles defense thrives under McDermott

Philadelphia Eagles first-year defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was promoted to the position on an interim basis in May because Jim Johnson, the successful group's longtime leader, took a medical leave of absence while battling cancer. During his weekly appearance today on ESPN 980's "The Jim Zorn Show," Redskins Coach Jim Zorn revealed that he called eight plays in the Redskins' 7-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. "They were just within the ... they weren't first-down plays," Zorn said. "Unless it was a two-minute drill. I called most of the two-minute drill." Zorn has previously acknowledged he retained play-calling duties in two-minute drills, and it was Zorn, not primary play-caller Sherman Lewis, who again directed the offense in those situations against the Cowboys.
