The future is now: Goff in at MLB

Jonathan Goff was working with the first team at middle linebacker at practice this afternoon, which seems to be a pretty good indication that he’ll start there on Sunday. The Giants always wanted to give the second-year pro out of Vanderbilt a shot, but the timing of Antonio Pierce’s injury initially created a problem. Since they didn’t lose him until two days before the Atlanta game, they didn’t feel Goff could get ready quick enough, which is why veteran Chase Blackburn started instead. Then the Denver game, of course, was only four games later, so Blackburn started again. But now, with a full week to prepare, it only makes sense to insert Goff, the Giants’ fifth round pick in 2008. There’s a chance he could be the future at that position. The Giants may as well take a look at him. Pierce expects to be back in '10

Antonio Pierce doesn’t believe his Giants career is over. Speaking for the first time since being placed on injured reserve yesterday, the Giants’ defensive captain told Sirius NFL Radio today that he expects to return in 2010. “I don’t see why I wouldn’t be there,” Pierce said “This was a season that got cut short by injury that shocked all of us — management, coaches and players. With everything I gave New York the past five years, I feel I’ll be here.” Pierce is 31 years old, is out for the season with a bulging disc in his neck, and has just one year and $4.75 million left on the six-year, $26 million deal he signed in 2005. Since it’s no guarantee the Giants will want to pay that much to an aging, injured player, Pierce could end up as an offseason cut. (Of course, his situation could also depend on the outcome of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations and whether there’s a salary cap in 2010. ...

The slumping New York Giants placed linebacker Antonio Pierce on injured reserve Monday with a bulging disk in his neck, ending the season for one of their defensive leaders. Pierce has missed two games since being ruled out indefinitely after an MRI exam Nov. 20 revealed the bulging disk. The Giants (6-5) decided to put Pierce on IR after he received a second opinion from Dr. Robert Watkins, an orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles.

Pierce is done for the season, maybe for good

Antonio Pierce’s season, and very possibly his Giants career, is over. The team placed the 31-year-old middle linebacker on injured reserve this afternoon, according to a team spokesman. He has been out for two weeks with a bulging disc in his neck and was expected to miss at least four more. Last week, Pierce traveled to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on his injury from Dr. Robert Watkins, a noted orthopedic surgeon, but according to the team Dr. Watkins concurred with the first opinion from the team doctors. The plan was to let Pierce rest and rehab the injury and see if the swelling went down on its’ own. Obviously it didn’t. And while a team spokesman said Pierce has not suffered a setback and is not headed for surgery (at least not at the moment), it seems clear the Giants the did not believe that Pierce would be able to return to action this season.
