It’s been a challenge

During the opening kick return of Sunday’s second half, Patriots coach Bill Belichick found himself, he thought, in perfect position along the sideline. He watched Brandon McGowan drill Jets returner Dwight Lowery , a hit that jarred the ball loose.

The defense Bill Belichick didn't want to put on the field a week ago kept the offense of the New York Jets off it Sunday. Leigh Bodden had three of the four interceptions thrown by Mark Sanchez and the New England Patriots defense allowed just one touchdown and 226 yards in a 31-14 win. The victory gave them a two-game lead in the AFC East and sent the Jets to their sixth loss in seven games.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, Leigh Bodden, Mark Sanchez

Sunday is another big Jets-Patriots game and, once again, the focus is on the two coaches. But this time, it isn't about feuds or handshakes or ring-kissing. It's about two polar opposites, Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, Rex Ryan, New England Patriots

Belichick's gamble against Colts made sense

"You play to win the game." That phrase has echoed throughout the NFL for years, ever since Herm Edwards uttered it while coaching the New York Jets. It's exactly what Bill Belichick was doing in Indianapolis last Sunday night. And as for delivering any message of distrust in his defense, maybe it was just the opposite.

This has not been the most pleasant week for the Patriots.

Colts Vs Ravens Preview: Ray of "Lite"

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional.
With an assist from Bill Belichick, the Colts are 9-0 and two games ahead of the Bengals in the race for playoff home-field advantage. A loss to the Patriots was nearly in the books until the Patriots eschewed a punt on 4th-and-2, and instead went for the first down. Tom Brady's pass to Kevin Faulk was stopped short by defensive back Melvin Bullitt.
"Unlike Faulk," says Peyton Manning, "we dodged a 'Bullitt,' and in turn gave Belichick a 'Melvin.'"
"But that game certainly told us a lot about ourselves, especially the fact that the Patriots are much more adept at stopping themselves than we are of stopping them."
"Now, I don't think Baltimore's Jim Harbaugh would duplicate Belichick's decision. I'm sure Harbaugh would punt it and rely on his defense. But should he? The Baltimore defense isn't what it used to be. In fact, if a shutout can possibly be underwhelming, then the Ravens' 16-0 blanking of the Browns was just that. This isn't the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Indianapolis Colts, Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick

Earth to Bill Belichick: It's Okay to Think Inside the Box

In Sunday's game against the Indianpolis Colts, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick decided to go for the win on fourth and two from his own 28-yard-line with a little over two minutes remaining even though his team was up six points at the time.
The conversion failed, the Patriots would lose the game and the controversy began. Just on this site alone there have been probably over 25 different articles covering this subject since the game ended.
But before you flip over to your facebook page or your fantasy football on ESPN, take some time to read one more substantive review of the now infamous play call and the subsequent post-game reactions.
First and foremost, your ESPN and NFL Network analysts would make you think the world was coming to an end with their reactions.
Former Patriot defensive stars and current television analysts Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi ripped their former coach for not having faith in his defense.
Plus former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Trent ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, New England Patriots, Tedy Bruschi

Five Reasons Not to Question Bill Belichick's Decision

Alright already. He made the call. Deal with it.
Whether you're a Patriots fan, a Colts fan, or none of the above, the majority of football lovers are questioning Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th down with two yards to go on his own 28 yard line.
That raises the question: How far does the saying, "In Bill We Trust" go?
To some fans, that question shouldn't even be asked. With three Super Bowls and four AFC championships in the decade, the Patriots would not be where they are today without Belichick.
So, to put to rest any early rumors of ousting Belichick from the New England tundra, here are five reasons to stop nagging Belichick about his 4th quarter call:

  1) The Call Had Nothing to do With a Lack of Confidence in His Defense
Belichick-run teams have always had a trademark: defense first, everything else thereafter.
No matter his trust or distrust in his defensive bunch, he would've elected to go for it even with a Pro Bowl defense on his side. Why? The Brady bunch. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, New England Patriots, Tom Brady, Indianapolis Colts

Math Wasn't a Factor in Belichick's Fourth and Two Equation

Enough already. Give it up.
Put away your calculator, your abacus, and your ZUES computer system. Please, no more freakonomics , or statistics, or probabilities. Save your analytics , algorithms, and algebra equations for baseball season. They don't fit this situation.
Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on fourth and two on his own 28 wasn't a glimpse of mathematical genius, or statistical prowess. It wasn't even mildly intelligent. It was wrong, and there isn't a single equation that is going to make it right.
The problem with stats and probabilities is they are fun if you're playing fantasy football, but they're also about as dry and unemotional as a Belichick press conference.
Probability doesn't account for momentum swings, crowd noise, Peyton Manning, a blister on Tom Brady's finger, or a horrendous case of jock-itch. In the world of probabilities, Chris Simms has the same chance of converting a fourth down as Joe Montana.
But somehow, in the last few days football ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, New England Patriots

Kill Bill? The Fourth-and-2 Wasn't What Cost the Patriots

The Patriots should've won that game. They out gained the Colts by 70 yards. They controlled the ball for 10 minutes longer than the Colts.
They forced Manning and his vaunted offense to punt six times in the first half, and led by 17 with 14 minutes left in the game.
What do they have to show for it? A one point loss that everyone is talking about .

There are plenty of people who will say this is just a regular season loss, so it doesn't mean that much. But like Ron Burgundy, it's kind of a big deal .
The way the last two minutes panned out makes this game a huge deal. I don't have a problem with the 4th and 2 call that cost the Patriots the game. It's the mismanagement of the team on the infamous drive that aggravates me. Many sports pundits have an issue with Belichick going for it on 4th and 2. Believe it or not, the math slightly supports Bellicheck's decision.
More importantly, the Patriots had a 75% success rate against the Colts on 4th downs since 2000, including 4-4 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Indianapolis Colts

Tuesday Moring Running Back Week Nine: Belichick Botches One.

Fourth and two on your own twenty-eight yard line with a little over two minutes to play and you're up by six.
Why wouldn't you punt?
Alas Bill Belichick is a rare breed.
He rolled the dice and crapped out.
Forget that the Patriots blew a sixteen point lead, this will live be a decision that will live in Patriot infamy for a long time.
But Bill Belichick doesn't care what you and I think.
He's got five Super Bowl rings and is a surefire hall of famer. He's entitled to a mistake or two.
But what I and other Patriots fans still feel is that although he maintains he was in the right, it still was the wrong call.
That was not Matthew Stafford under center for the opposition, that was Peyton Manning, probably the greatest clutch quarterback of his generation.
In other words, that's probably the last quarterback you want to face with a short field and the game on the line.
If you punt, the odds are that you pin him deep in his own territory and since his deep balls weren't that accurate ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, New England Patriots

New England Patriots: This 'Bud Adams' Is For All The Whiners Out There

For all you whiners and complainers and naysayers out there jumping all over Belichick, go watch the video of Bud Adams...that is just for you.
I'm sick and tired of hypocrites and cry babies!
How can you not admire the call, regardless of who you wanted to win.
The 30-40 yards they would have netted on a punt would have been gained back in two plays. The Patriots defense was gassed as they were thin at both defensive line and linebacker. Time was a non-factor.
Assuming the punt wasn't returned for even more favorable field position, the defense would have given up the underneath stuff and Indianapolis would have been on the 30 yard line with three time outs remaining and 1:40 on the clock.
And if you foolishly completely disagree with this probable and logical assessment, whats the difference! If you make the play, you win the game. It is not like Belichick and the Patriots haven't earned the right to make such a call.
Where were all you whining fools when Belichick made the same ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, Bud Adams

Peter King: Gruden's choice leaves Shanahan in prime spot

Jon Gruden says he definitely won't be on a sideline in '10. That's good news for Mike Shanahan, says Peter King as he muses on coaching, Bill Belichick and more in his latest mailbag.

NFL Replay: Failed fourth down call a stain in Belichick's record

Bill Belichick outsmarted himself this time. How else to explain it? The Patriots coach thumbed his nose at conventional football ...

This week's Monday morning quarterbacking session is devoted entirely to Bill Belichick's much-discussed (and costly) decision to go for it on fourth down.
