When was the last great quarterback for the Jets? Well—1969. Yes, it's been that long. Brett Favre comes in with a lot of well deserved hype, both for his performances throughout his career, and for the season he had last year. Favre is expected to be the "savior" of the New York Jets, and I hope for similar numbers to last year. He produced 4155 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. I also expect two particular players to benefit from the off-season moves the Jets made. One is Thomas Jones. With the beefed up offensive line, Jones should produce more yards and touchdowns. With a much QB behind center he should also perform better in the receiving game. The other player I expect to perform much better this year is Jerricho Cotchery. Cotchery has been in the league since 2004, when the Jets drafted him in third round. His numbers have improved each year, with a career high of six touchdowns in 2006. The NFL Picks Column: Week One, Favre Returns, Patriots 16-Point Favorites

The weekly NFL picks column is, by far, my favorite column to write. Plus, if I’m writing it, it means there’s real football this Sunday. There was technically real football on Thursday, but I’m not sure I’d call whatever it was the Redskins’ offense was doing “real football.” Before I begin, as some of you know, I’ve been writing NFL team previews for the last three weeks or so. The plan was to preview all thirty-two teams. But when I was on vacation the week before Labor Day, I was stunned to find out there was no Internet access where we were staying. Needless to say, my plan to write two columns per day went straight down the crapper. So I did all of the non-playoff teams from last season, plus the Redskins. The good news? It's status quo on today's injury report

The injury report is out and there are no changes to the Jets’ health situation. WR David Clowney is still out with a shoulder injury while DB David Barrett (shoulder), WR Laveranues Coles (thigh), DE Shaun Ellis (hand), WR Marcus Henry (calf), DB Justin Miller (foot) and OL Damien Woody (shoulder) all went through limited practice and remain listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Miami had one player on the list, CB Michael Lehan (ankle) who is listed as questionable but went through a full practice. “We’ll see how it goes with L.C. and Justin Miller and Chris (Baker),” Eric Mangini said. “They’ve all worked and they’ve all been practicing to different degrees, each guy. We’ll just see where they are and gauge it at game time and throughout the course of the game as well.” Baker has been nursing a sore back but he was not on the report. It does provide for a wonderful sports’ story, but that does not translate well to logical sports’ analysis. It’s actually quite sickening. Are football fans to understand that the New York Jets were in for trouble this season with Chad Pennington at quarterback, but he has a fighting chance with a less talented Miami Dolphins' team? Disgusting. Jets’ fans dealt with Pennington criticisms from every angle over the last few seasons.
