Gotta hand it to Forte -- or better yet, pass it

It's gotten to the point the Bears probably won't solve their running-game woes this season, but that doesn't mean they've run out of effective uses for Matt Forte. He caught a career-high eight passes for 120 yards last week at San Francisco and has 194 yards receiving in the last two games as offensive coordinator Ron Turner finds ways to adjust to a bottled-up ground game.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Matt Forte, San Francisco 49ers, Ron Turner, Chicago Bears

Bears RB Wolfe lost for season with kidney injury

The Chicago Bears placed backup running back Garrett Wolfe on injured reserve Friday, ending his season.

The team listed a kidney injury for Wolfe, who told the Chicago Tribune in a text message that he suffered a lacerated kidney on the opening kickoff of a game against Arizona on Nov. 8.

The Bears elevated running back Kahlil Bell from the practice squad to replace Wolfe.

Wolfe carried the ball 22 times this season for 120 yards and one touchdown.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Chicago Bears, Garrett Wolfe, Arizona Cardinals

It's time to put up, so the Bears are going to shut up when it comes to the NBC pregame show Sunday night. That's the message coach Lovie Smith delivered after practice Thursday as the Bears made final preparations for the Philadelphia Eagles in what amounts to a must-win game for both teams if they hope to remain alive in the NFC playoff race.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, NBC, Lovie Smith, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears

For three struggling QBs, it's November nosedive

Quarterbacks must avoid the three I's -- interceptions, inconsistency, inaccuracy.

That has been a problem for the Chicago Bears' Jay Cutler, Atlanta Falcons' Matt Ryan and New York Jets' Mark Sanchez. Their teams have taken a November nosedive, a combined 2-6 this month, facing critical games Sunday.

Jay Cutler

His woes: He leads the NFL in interceptions (17), including five against the 49ers last week. Too many of Cutler's mistakes have occurred in the red zone, costing the Bears (4-5) points.

"It's hard to win a football game when you have five turnovers,"' head coach Lovie Smith said.

Some of Cutler's interceptions have been bad throws. Some have been caused by miscommunication between Cutler and his receivers. But the bottom line is this. Cutler has not performed like the Bears expected when they were so thrilled to acquire him from the Broncos in the offseason.

His weekend: Cutler faces the Eagles (5-4) at home, a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, Mark Sanchez, New York Jets, Matt Ryan, Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons

Chicago Bears: What Needs To Be Done To Fix The Future, Right Now!

The Chicago Bears go up this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles, who will be missing Brian Westbrook. The game is on Sunday Night Football... which means that despite the absence of Westbrook, I still do not feel bad chalking this one up as a loss.
In Jay Cutler's three previous prime time performances (Packers, Falcons, 49ers), he accumulated the following total numbers: 73/131 for a 55 percent completion rate, 884 yards, three TDs and 11 Ints.
Now that doesn't mean Jay is going to come out and bomb, but I still feel very confident that the Bears chances of winning are slim. Especially considering how the offensive line has played and how much the Eagles' defense enjoys blitzing.
So if the Bears do lose and the playoffs become an afterthought, there are several changes that Lovie Smith needs to make in order for the Bears to be better prepared for the following season.
Lets start on the offensive side:
First, move Juaquin Iglesias into the receiver rotation. I like the trio of Devin ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Chicago Bears, Derek Anderson, Kellen Davis, Adrian Peterson, Anthony Adams, Desmond Clark

Whether or not the Bears failed Rex Grossman or Rex Grossman failed the Bears, the point is still the same: the Bears haven't had a "franchise" quarterback since Sid Luckman. In fact, the Bears haven't even had an offense that ranks higher than 15th in the NFL in Jerry Angelo's nine seasons as general manager.
Brian Westbrook Ruled Out for Sunday's Game at Chicago

After suffering his second concussion in only three weeks, the Eagles are being very, very cautious with their star running back, Brian Westbrook. Reid has continuously said that Westbrook's health is their primary concern, and now he's proven it by ruling Westbrook out for Sunday's game. Even when healthy, Westbrook has not been very impressive this season and has lost some carries to the rookie LeSean McCoy and newcomer fullback Leonard Weaver. With only 381 total yards and two total touchdowns, Westbrook's production has been worse than it was even last season. The concussions and other knee/ankle problems, along with his age, have taken their toll and we may never see the old Westbrook again. The whispers around the city are that Reid could very well shut Westbrook down for the entire season, perhaps opening the door for a veteran running back to enter the mix. However, the odds are better that Reid would use the roster spot on the defensive side of the ball for a unit that has been ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Brian Westbrook, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Andy Reid, LeSean McCoy

Hey, Bears, running is passé

Mike Mulligan: Leave the power running game on the bus and hand the ball to Jay Cutler. That's the best solution for the Bears with seven games left in a fast-fading season. Wide-open passing games are flourishing around the league, and the Bears need to get on board. Their insistence on fitting Cutler into an offensive philosophy, instead of just letting him take over, is preventing them from joining the fun. Doubt it?

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears

Come To Think of It: Is a "No Chicago Bears Sunday" Now a Welcome Respite?

It used to be that a Sunday without a Bears game just ruined my day. I mean, the ritual of gathering around the television on Sunday is ingrained in my DNA. But now, I'll admit that I really dont' miss them all that much.
Sure, I watched on Thursday night. And yes, we've always had the occasional Sunday or Monday night game, so this is nothing new.
And yes, there was a period of time after Da Coach left that I became disillusioned with the team. The Wanny and Jauron years, for the most part, were brutal.
Yet, in the past, it seemed there was always a reason to watch even if the team wasn't that good. Primarily, our defense. But the way this team plays defense, and that damn Tampa-2 (which has outlived its useful life), it's just not that fun anymore.
And let's face it, one of the main reasons for hope this season was the arrival of Jay Cutler. But now, every time he drops back to pass, I cringe at the thought of another interception.
Look, I hate to be so negative, but I can't readily ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Chicago Bears

Mike Singletary's Dilemma is Playoff Defense, Pop Warner Offense

I love Mike Singletary. I have been a fan of his since he destroyed opposing offenses when he roamed the field for the Monsters of the Midway.
I was thrilled when he was named Head Coach of the San Franciso 49ers and admire his great motivational and leadership qualities.
There is no chance the 49ers will ever have a poor defense with Mike at the helm. Offense, on the other hand, appears to be another story.
SINGLETARY COMMENTS ON 49er OFFENSE AFTER BEARS DEBACLE
"I thought [QB] Alex [Smith] did a good job." "I thought our offense did what they needed to do in order for us to win the game. Yes, we would have like to have gotten more points, and I think that will come." "I thought we did a good job running the ball. We felt that we could be effective running the ball, and it showed later on. And, because I felt our defense would do a good job against their offense, it’s the reason that later on in the game we decided to run the ball more and not take a risk in throwing the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Alex Smith

Chicago Bears Fans, Dont Give Up on Jay Cutler

After nine weeks no one would have expected the Chicago Bears to be sitting at 4-5 and in third place in the NFC North. I boldly predicted the Bears to be 8-1 through the first nine weeks, maybe 7-2 if Green Bay somehow stole the show in Lambeau.
Never did I stop to think "What if Matt Forte has a sophomore slump" or "What if Jay Cutler leads the league in interceptions." Never did I stop to think "What if the bears are 4-5, halfway through the season." But the truth is the Bears are 4-5 through nine games and watching their playoff hopes slowly diminish week by week.
After the horrible start to the season many Bears fans and NFL analysts are writing Jay Cutler off as a franchise quarterback. But I ask those people to stop and be patient because if you give up on Jay Cutler you're giving up on the Bears.
For one Jay Cutler is only 26-years-old, entering his fourth NFL season (third as a starter). In Brett Favre's third season he threw 24 interceptions with only 19 touchdowns, only to come back ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears

A Tamed Stallion: Marshall No Longer a Bucking Bronco

  Originally published Oct. 14, 2009
Let's turn the clock back a little less than 50 days to Aug. 29.
Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall had just been suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, adding more salt to a still fresh wound for the Broncos . The team a few months earlier had traded their disgruntled franchise quarterback to the Chicago Bears , and now were dealing with their No. 1 receiver demanding a trip out of Denver.
Now fast froward to the present day.
The Broncos are the surprise of the NFL standing atop the AFC West with a perfect 5-0 record. Even more surprising is the fact that Marshall, of all people, has been the key player in the past two Broncos victories. Marshall made a spectacular run and catch for the go ahead touchdown against the Cowboys and just last Sunday scored the game-tying touchdown against the Patriots .
In other words, Marshall has gone from zero to hero among Broncos fans in less than 60 days. So what has changed?

Congrats, Jay Cutler: You've Just Joined Some Bad Company

Jay Cutler's now infamous 5 interceptions has placed him in a unique class of Quarterbacks who've thrown 5 interceptions.

Among active quarterbacks in the NFL, only 12 QB's have thrown 5 interceptions in a game within the past 10 years.

Of course there's the Ty Detmer's who threw 7 interceptions but he is no longer active.

I thought the trade for Cutler was bad when it happened and I just keep getting confirmation that I was right.

It must be driving Bears fans crazy that they thought they were getting a savior only to watch Kyle Orton filling that role for the Broncos. Now Jay Cutler's tied with Jake Delhomme for the most interceptions thrown within the past few years. He's also ranked 26th lowest among active Quarterbacks for Interception percentage, which shows the percentage of passes thrown that are intercepted.

Jay Cutler Vs Rex Grossman: You Be The Judge Bear Fans

On a night where the Chicago Bears defense actually kind of, sorta, in a small way showed up, it was the Chicago Bears offense that dropped the ball ... no pun intended.
And to be perfectly accurate, it was the Bears' quarterback again reminding everyone how poor that position has been for the past 20 years-plus.
Jay Cutler threw five (count 'em, five) interceptions and in doing so, he looked remarkably like the type of QB that led us to a Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, not to a Super Bowl title, but Rex Grossman did manage to navigate the Bears to the big game in 2006 despite some shoty numbers. Last night, Cutler was a spitting image of him.
Cutler still displayed the strong arm and big-play ability, much like Rex did, but his interceptions were awful and in very costly situations, all five being in 49er territory, including one at the one-yard line and one in the end zone as time expired.
The game resembled the four-interception game that Sexy Rexy had against the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears, Rex Grossman, Rex Ryan, Super Bowl
