Dolphins Cornerback Travis Daniels Dealt to Browns

It wasn't the rampantly-rumored John Beck trade, but the Dolphins did make a minor splash on the trade front today. Fourth-year cornerback Travis Daniels was shipped to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. Background Daniels, 25, was drafted by former Dolphins head coach Nick Saban in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Saban had previously coached Daniels while the two were at LSU. Despite being a second-day pick, Daniels was thrust into the starting lineup early as he opened 14 of 16 games for the Dolphins in 2005. It would prove to be his best season for the Dolphins as he recorded 61 tackles, 13 pass deflections and an interception. Daniels appeared in 28 games over the following two seasons, starting 11. He recorded just two interceptions and five pass deflections over in that span. The Miami Dolphins traded cornerback Travis Daniels to the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday for an undisclosed draft pick. Daniels played in all 16 games last season for Miami, including five starts. He had 27 tackles and an interception. The Dolphins took Daniels with a fourth-round draft pick in 2005. Then-coach Nick Saban made the pick after coaching Daniels at LSU.

After a great 2007 season, high hopes are streaming around Lake Erie. The Browns are returning everyone that played a key role in last year's 10-6 run that just missed the playoffs. Plus, they added some big names that are supposed to push them over the edge to greatness. It breaks my heart to inform everyone that the Browns are going to suck yet again and there is plenty of reasoning to back that up. 1) Defense (or lack there of) The defense is a joke. They were 10-6 last year, even though the defense was 30th in the league. They gave up 360 yards per game! They brought in Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers to try and solidify the line, which gave up 4.5 yards every time the opposing team carried the ball. Even if they can stop the run, the secondary gave up 29 touchdowns last year. As much as I love Sean Jones, he can't cover anyone. He just comes up and makes hits and big plays. Second-year corner Eric Wright is supposed to be a shut down ...

The new brown pants were horrible, and unfortunately for the Cleveland Browns, their performance against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football was much worse. The Browns' first teams on both sides of the ball were abused, beaten, and manhandled by the Giants' first teamers, eventually falling to Big Blue, 37-34. It was nowhere near as close as the score indicates. The game started off looking good for Cleveland, as the Browns' defense forced a three-and-out on the opening series of the game. Derek Anderson guided the Browns offense on a prolonged drive that stalled on the Giants’ 39. Phil Dawson came on and nailed a wind-aided, 56-yard field goal to put the Browns up 3-0. It was all downhill from there. The Giants drove down the field effortlessly on the ensuing drive, aided by a 53-yard pass interference penalty on Browns’ defensive back Eric Wright. Anderson was hurt was he was sacked by Osi Umenyiora. He walked off the field and went to the locker room for further examination. He was replaced by Brady Quinn. Anderson was 4-of-10 for 20 yards. After many disastrous seasons, including a 4-12 campaign in 2006, the Cleveland Browns brought hope in 2007 to city desperate for a winner. The Browns finished 2007 with a surprising 10-6 finish and missing the playoffs on a tie-breaker with Tennessee. Expectations are high for Cleveland heading into 2008 as they try to make the playoffs for the first time since they re-entered the league in 1999. The offense exploded last year with emergence of Derek Anderson at quarterback. Both Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow II appear to be the players the Browns hoped they were getting when they drafted them. The 26-year-old beat out veteran NFL kicker Billy Cundiff, and Shane Andrus, who has spent most of his last two summers in the Colts’ training camp (Andrus is also an ex-Giant, since he was signed by them to a futures contract on Jan. 9, only to be waived on Feb. 13). Huston, a former Ohio State kicker, spent a few days on the Bengals’ practice squad last year after he was cut by the Giants on Sept. 1, but mostly he just bounced from tryout to tryout. With the roster restrictions this year (no more than 80 men, thanks to the elimination of the NFL Europa exemptions), Huston had been unable to find any work. The final training-camp practice didn't shed any light on the quarterback situation, as it was a walk-through working off cards for Saturday's game at Seattle. The most interesting thing this week was coach Lovie Smith's statement that the competition might have another full week to go. He's not committing to naming a starter until the final preseason game Aug. 28 at Cleveland, which means perhaps letting the decision carry to next weekend, after the game against San Francisco on Thursday. Of course, a big outing by Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton in Seattle could change everything.
