Portis might miss Dec. 13 game at Oakland

Running back Clinton Portis might sit out next week's road game against the Oakland Raiders because of lingering affects from a concussion. On Monday, Portis will travel to Pittsburgh to be examined again by concussion specialists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today at Redskins Park. After the two-day evaluation, Portis is scheduled to return to Redskins Park on Wednesday. It seems highly unlikely that Portis, who as of this week still was experiencing dizziness during workouts, would play in the game at Oakland. "He still has a little bit of dizziness or just not feeling right," Zorn said.

Zorn clarifies Portis' condition

Coach Jim Zorn today attempted to clarify some confusion about the medical status of running back Clinton Portis, who has sat out the last three games because of lingering affects from a concussion. During his regular weekly appearance Tuesday on ESPN 990's "The John Thompson Show," Portis, who also has been ruled out from this week's game against the New Orleans Saints, seemed to indicate he had been cleared by a Washington physician to return to the football field, but added he was still experiencing vision problems that would have to improve before he could play. Portis has one more hurdle to clear

Redskins running back Clinton Portis said today he has been cleared by a Washington doctor to return to the football field but needs to clear one more medical hurdle before suiting up again. In his weekly radio appearance on ESPN 980, Portis said he can't return to action until he receives clearance from specialists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who first evaluated Portis on Nov. 20. He's scheduled to visit with them again next Monday, and Coach Jim Zorn has already ruled Portis out for Sunday's game against New Orleans. After Philadelphia DE Juqua Parker threw Washington QB Jason Cambell to the ground on the final forth down play of the Eagles 27-24 victory, everything went black. No, not for the Redskins. This season has already proven to exhibit the absence of light. I'm referring to Jason Campbell. In his postgame interview, Campbell remarked, "The guy actually threw me on top of my head. And when he slammed me down on my head everything blacked out, my left arm was numb, and I had the breath knocked out of me. So I have no comments for what I think, but at the same time....We know." Yes Jason, we know. Campbell was actually referring to our understood knowledge that the tackle in question deserved a flag and 15-yard penalty. The flag we did get was a red one. Just got off the phone with running back Ladell Betts, who will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium. Betts is a hard worker and a consummate professional, and he had been playing extremely well in place of Clinton Portis, who has been sidelined because of lingering effects from a concussion. Clinton Portis will be out for another game against the Philadelphia Eagles. After suffering a concussion against Atlanta, team officials have taken a cautious approach with Portis. After having him re-evaluated on Friday at the University of Pittsburgh, the decision was made to sit him for the game against Philadelphia. Now, after the news that Ladell Betts will be out for the season with a knee injury, the Redskins' primary back is Rock Cartwright. Dropping to seven losses on the season, the Redskins are basically only playing for pride at this point. With the playoffs out of reach, the best idea for the Redskins would be to allow their younger players to gain some experience the rest of the season. Betts apparently got hurt on a hard tackle by Bradie James at the end of a 2-yard gain midway through the first quarter Sunday.
