Colts underrated despite unblemished record

BALTIMORE -- The Colts are undefeated, yet somehow underrated. Six of their 10 victories have come by four points or less. Maybe if Bill Belichick punts instead of gambles last week, the Colts are not undefeated at all. Meanwhile, the unbeaten Saints (10-0) have been the sexier team, scoring more points, winning by larger margins. But in their 17-15 victory over the Ravens on Sunday, the Colts displayed many of their special qualities. They are cool in the clutch. They have a cerebral quarterback, Peyton Manning, capable of completing any pass, to any receiver, at any time. They have an opportunistic defense that keeps making plays, even when depleted by injuries. The Colts don't embarrass you. They just beat you. And having won so often, for so many years, they will not allow talk about winning streaks, or undefeated seasons, distract them from their ultimate goal. Afterward, Manning spoke with reporters about the day. Q: What is your reaction to being 10-0? A: That's not really on anybody's mind, at least not on my mind. We're relieved we got this win. The NFL has fined Houston Texans safety Eugene Wilson $5,000 for hitting Colts tight end Dallas Clark during last weekend's game. Wilson was penalized for unnecessary roughness for the hit, which came in the second quarter and the Colts leading 13-0. Indianapolis won the game 20-17. The NFL said Friday that Wilson hit a defenseless receiver.

Bill Belichick hopes to contain Dallas Clark, who leads the league's tight ends in receptions (60) and yards, on Sunday night during the Colts-Patriots showdown. But the Patriots' head coach is making no promises. "Tight ends are hard to match up against," Belichick said. "The (defensive backs) don't have the size and the linebackers usually can't match their speed and quickness.
