Why The Miami Dolphins Should Take a Long Look at Darren Sharper

It's no secret the Miami Dolphins have a glaring need at free safety. Along with nose tackle and wide receiver, free safety help is at the top of the team's wish-list this offseason.
Miami made a strong push for former Arizona Cardinals All-Pro safety Antrel Rolle before he signed with the New York Giants to become the highest-paid safety in the NFL.
They were hoping to snag him in free agency after releasing incumbent starter Gibril Wilson on March 5. After that didn't pan out, the Dolphins turned to Ryan Clark as plan B.
Clark re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after a two-day visit with the Fins brass. It looked like they had him when he came into town, but after the dust settled it appeared Miami was simply Clark's ploy for leverage over his former team.
Clark got his wish for a pretty new deal where he really wanted to be, but the Dolphins have still gone without their wish for a new safety.
Midway through the second week of free agency, there isn't much left on the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Miami Dolphins, Darren Sharper, Austin Long

The Benefit of the Doubt: New Orleans Saints Too Sharp to Let Darren Depart

As I walked through the park on Thursday evening, two middle-aged assholes were stretching and discussing in loud and annoying voices the Chicago Bears' acquisition of Julius Peppers.
Man, What do you think about Lovie paying all that money to Peppers at his age?
"Lovie's not thinking long-term," said the other asshole. "He thinking about an immediate impact."
What life-changing wisdom!
I kept walking since I don't give a shit about Lovie or Peppers or the Bears or immediate impacts.
I'm more concerned about Saints free safety Darren Sharper saying he is not "feeling the love" and that he's planning a visit to the New York Jets.
We all know the impact he had. Nine interceptions. The ability to make plays on the ball that the Josh Bullocks and Kevin Kaesvihorns and Jason Davids of the world never possessed.
GM Mickey Loomis told reporters on Friday, "I have all the love in the world for Darren Sharper. I just don't have all the money in the world for Darren Sharper."
For now, let's ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Darren Sharper, Julius Peppers, Lovie Smith

Darren Sharper To The Jets?

Free agent Darren Sharper just recently indicated he would like to join the Jets and thinks they would be a good fit for him.
"I have the utmost respect for Rex Ryan, seeing what he did last year and how quickly he turned things around with a rookie quarterback. And I sat down and watched that scheme and what they did," Sharper said.
He added, "And like I've told people before, the New York teams, there's something about the big lights and big city that fits me, and I know I would fit there."
Coming off an All Pro year, including nine interceptions (and three returned for touchdowns), Sharper thrived in the aggressive Saints scheme.
The Jets traded Kerry Rhodes to Arizona because he didn't make plays, wasn't the ballhawk they wanted, and he fell out of favor with the team.
Sharper, 34, would be a great short-term solution and could step in and contribute right away. After his career year there is no doubt he has gas left in the tank. After all, the Jets are a team built to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Darren Sharper, New York Jets

Atogwe Or Sharper: Who Should Dolphins Consider?

With the Ryan Clark stunner still fresh in our minds, it's time to sit back and weigh the Dolphins' options. Obviously, there is always the draft, but should they really consider trusting an unproven rookie to fill the void of a position that was the Achilles Heel of the defense just a year ago? Well, the options remaining are limited, but intriguing as well. The two names that have been thrown out there are O.J. Atogwe and Darren Sharper. Both Atogwe and Sharper have pros and cons, just like any potential free agent acquisition. So let's try and measure the value of both players, and try and determine which would be the best fix at free safety for the Dolphins. By the way, there hasn't been any hard evidence that Miami is thinking about pursuing either one, but of the remaining options in free agency, they make the most sense. Also, because Bill Parcells has already stated he didn't want any leaks, they could possibly be in talks with nobody knowing about it. O.J. Atogwe Case For: ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Miami Dolphins, Darren Sharper

NFL Free Agents: The Best Defense Money Can Buy

Note: I was asked by y5nthon5a which NFL free agents I would sign and why. With that question as inspiration, I've created a team made up of entirely of 2010 free agents.

2010 is an uncapped year. Imagine if Los Angeles had an expansion team—let's call them the Crusaders—bank-rolled by Hollywood heavyweights, and this team was able to sign any free agent they wanted.

It’s every fan’s dream.
If I were named the Crusader’s general manager, I would sign the following 53 players to complete my roster.
Let's start with the defense:

   Defensive End
Julius Peppers, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Aaron Kampman, Jarvis Green
I question how long Peppers will continue to be elite, but it’s reasonable to work off the assumption that he will play at a high level in the short term.
Vanden Bosch would take some of Peppers' double teams away and force teams to play a lot of max protect.
Kampman was made average by the Packers 3-4 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Julius Peppers, Gary Brackett, Antrel Rolle, Darren Sharper, Dunta Robinson, Super Bowl

Darren Sharper: As a Free Agent, A Move to the Chicago Bears Makes Sense

It's come as a surprise to me that the New Orleans Saints have taken their time to re-sign their trusty full safety Darren Sharper, who only a season ago was one of the leading causes in the Saints' Super Bowl victory.
However, although New Orleans may suffer, suddenly a large sum of money hangs over the head of Darren Sharper, as the rest of the league clicks into fifth gear and tries to think of an ingenious way to gain the defensive powerhouse.
It may not come easily, but the Chicago Bears are leading the pack at the moment. According to NFL.com , four teams (Miami, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and of course the Chicago Bears) are in the hunt for Sharper, and the pickings are slim.
Sure, either one of these four teams could really do with a safety that is as talented as Sharper, but who is willing to pay the $30 or $40 million that comes with signing No. 42? Well it's simple, Chicago is up for it.
Okay, so they did just blow a hefty sum of money that some folks may ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Darren Sharper, Chicago Bears, Lovie Smith, New Orleans Saints

Big names, big values remain on NFL free-agent market

The Bears and Lions made the biggest splashes on the opening day of free agency — storming the market like early-bird shoppers on Black Friday — but several other teams spent money for players they hope will fit their plans.

Players such as defensive ends Julius Peppers (Bears) and Kyle Vanden Bosch (Lions); cornerbacks Dunta Robinson (Falcons) and Antonio Cromartie (Jets); wide receiver Anquan Boldin (Ravens); and linebacker Karlos Dansby (Dolphins) were grabbed off the shelves quickly.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz, formerly Tennessee's defensive coordinator, was eager to sign his former player — he was camped out in Vanden Bosch's driveway when free agency started at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday — even though Vanden Bosch is 31. Schwartz understands that older veterans still can have value.
