Secondary injuries give Barnes his chance

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall sat out Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles with a knee sprain. Veteran Fred Smoot was knocked from the game in the fourth quarter after suffering a blow to the head, and second-year cornerback Justin Tryon suffered a hip pointer, came out, tried to go back in, but couldn't last. So by the end of the game, when the Eagles were driving for the winning field goal, the cornerbacks were five-year veteran Carlos Rogers on one side, rookie Kevin Barnes -- who hadn't played in a regular-season NFL game in his life -- on the other, and third-year pro Byron Westbrook, a practice squad player in 2007 and '08, in the slot. "I never seen so many guys go down," Rogers said.

Hall will miss Sunday's game; Rogers to start

Top cornerback DeAngelo Hall (knee) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles and the recently benched Carlos Rogers will start for Hall at Lincoln Financial Field, Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today at Redskins Park. "This is that thing that we were talking about last week. Here's another shot" for Rogers, Zorn said. "And he's had a good week of practice." After repeatedly struggling this season against double moves, Rogers was benched early in Washington's 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 10. Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall utilized a double move in beating Rogers for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Wideout DeSean Jackson used a double move while burning Rogers for a 57-yard touchdown in the second quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles' 27-17 victory in Week 7. Zorn and secondary coach Jerry Gray were encouraged by how Rogers responded to being

Hall, Haynesworth remain questionable

If top cornerback DeAngelo Hall sits out Sunday's game in Philadelphia because of a knee injury, Carlos Rogers will join Fred Smoot in the starting lineup, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park. "He's looking good," Zorn said of Hall. "But he's very questionable for the game." Although Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) has improved, he also is still listed as questionable. "Albert was running pretty good straight ahead," Zorn said. "He's still not ready." The Redskins expect veteran tackle-guard Mike Williams (ankle) to play in the game at Lincoln Financial Field, but rookie guard Edwin Williams will remain with the first-team. Williams filled in well after Chad Rinehart suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Week 11 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. "We're going to try to keep that group in there," Zorn said of the offensive line that finished the game against Dallas.

Betts, Hall injured in scoreless 1st quarter

The two major developments in a scoreless first quarter: Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall suffered a bruise knee and running back Ladell Betts - who is already replacing Pro Bowler Clinton Portis - was lost for the game with a knee injury. Betts injured himself on a first-down carry on the Redskins' second possession. He will be replaced by veteran Rock Cartwright, who, prior to last week, had just 12 carries in his last three seasons. Cartwright, pressed into action because of Portis's injury, carried nine times for 41 yards against Denver a week ago. He will have to be backed up by Quinton Ganther, signed just a week ago after Portis went down with a concussion. The Cowboys do not appear to have problems with their running game. The Redskins' defense entered the game ranked first in the NFL against the pass. To the Cowboys, to start the game, that
