Mike Shanahan Trying to Pick Al Davis' Pocket for Nnamdi Asomugha?

A little news article surfaced today, thanks to Yahoo again.
It seems Mike Shanahan holds Nmandi Asomugha in pretty high standards. That can't be too comforting for Champ Bailey.
According to the article, he was quoted as saying "I can't believe this guy hasn't been to the Pro Bowl or people don't talk about him all the time. He is off the charts and as good as it gets. He doesn't get the attention for the way he plays consistently. He is the most underrated football player that I have ever seen in my coaching career."
Interesting praise, well-deserved, of course for the Raiders' Corner.
But, there is one thing that does look odd. This was the same way Mike tried to pick off another Raider great in Tim Brown.
Back a number of years, Tim Brown was close to becoming a free agent. Since Denver was looking for a good quality receiver, Shanahan went looking for someone. He didn't have to go far.
By trying to sign him, it forced Oakland to match out the deal, and kept Tim Brown with us for all ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Mike Shanahan, Nnamdi Asomugha, Al Davis, Oakland Raiders, Tim Brown, Denver Broncos

Cutler tackles diabetes, Elway's legacy head-on

Jay Cutler is refusing to be sacked by diabetes or John Elway's legacy. The Broncos' third-year pro is taking both challenges head-on. He's on pace to set a franchise record with more than 4,500 yards passing and also end Denver's two-year playoff drought even though the team is tormented by injuries that have sent 11 players to IR and five ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, John Elway, Denver Broncos

Miami Dolphins at 6-4, But Do They Deserve It?

The Miami Dolphins, a 1-15 team last year, have had a resurgence under the tutelage of Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano. They have gained success through the clever use of the Wildcat formation.
Four of the Dolphins' six wins have come against mediocre teams this season: the underachieving San Diego Chargers, the meager Seattle Seahawks, the inept Oakland Raiders, and the stumbling Buffalo Bills.
The Dolphins did win against Denver, but the Broncos are not as good as their record would let you believe. The Broncos have a weak defense and no running game.
Their win against the Patriots was the first week they introduced the Wildcat. I think even the best defenses in the league, like the Giants or the Titans, would have been dazed and confused seeing those plays for the first time.
This Sunday, the Dolphins face off against the recovered and seemingly invincible Patriots. The Patriots continue to win, even with the mounting injuries. This will be the Dolphins most ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Joey Porter

BCS To Determine This Year's NFL Playoffs!

So...the guys who run the BCS have taken things to levels we never saw coming. After claiming success from their system, the BCS will officially determine the NFL Playoffs starting this year! Wait, what?!
That's right, folks! The flawed system known as the BCS is making its way to the pro ranks. With that said, I wonder how they will plan for the controversy in the NFL? And how will Roger Goodell Castro handle this shocking news? Let's take a look at the current NFL Division Leaders as it stands today:
   AFC
   Tennessee Titans, AFC South (10-0)
   Pittsburgh Steelers, AFC North (8-3)
New York Jets, AFC East (7-3)
   Denver Broncos, AFC West (6-4)
   NFC
New York Giants, NFC East (9-1)
   Carolina Panthers, NFC South (8-2)
   Arizona Cardinals, NFC West (7-3)
Green Bay Packers, NFC North (5-5)
These eight teams look to have a chance to at the NFL Playoffs, but the BCS Computer will most likely see things differently. It's no surprise that the BCS does play ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bowl Championship Series, Roger Goodell, Denver Broncos

NFL Suicide Pool Pick Week 12

For Week 11, we selected the Miami Dolphins as our suicide pick and kept our perfect record intact...although we did receive a scare. After being in control for the entire game, the Raiders returned a 93-yard punt to take the 15-14 lead before Miami nailed the last second victory to prevail. No one said this thing would be easy...
For Week 12, our selection is the Denver Broncos. Although Denver has been inconsistent for most of the year, they are coming off two consecutive road victories and now get the hapless Raiders in the friendly confines of Invesco Park.
Here's how we see this game unfolding. Offensively, we like Denver to attack through the air. With Cutler's full arsenal of play makers back–Marshall, Royal and Scheffler, there will be ample opportunities to attack Oakland's depleted secondary and then look for Shanahan to turn to the running game once the lead is solidified.
Defensively, while not a strong point for the team, they face a very limited Raiders' offense that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos

Broncos-Raiders: Denver Looks to Build off Early Season Dominance

Since their meeting in week one, both the Broncos (6-4) and the Raiders (2-8) have changed dramatically.
Denver has been absolutely depleted by injuries, while Oakland has tried to "pull off the bandage before the wound was healed", if you will.
In their meeting in week one, the Broncos made the home-team Raiders look like the butt-end of all jokes as they beat Oakland 41-14.
Since that game, Oakland has fired former head coach Lane Kiffin and parted ways with their biggest off-season acquisition, DeAngelo Hall.
The last six years of this rivalry have been a bit one-sided, as the Broncos have won nine of the last eleven matchups between the two teams.
Denver boasts the AFC's top passer in quarterback Jay Cutler, as well as the top overall offense in the conference.
Oakland will try to counter Cutler and the aerial attack with All-Underrated team captain Nnamdi Asomugha, who has been thrown at a mere 17 times this season.
Asomugha, however, has been the lone bright spot on this Oakland ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Jay Cutler

Edgerrin James Asks For Release, Could The Denver Broncos Be His Next Stop?

The infamous Drew Rosenhaus announced today that Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James has officially asked to be released. However, the Cardinals quickly rejected that request.
James still feels he is capable and physically able to rush for 1,000 yards, whether it be for the Cardinals or another team. Rosenhaus spoke for his client recently about the situation saying, "He is not playing now, and there are teams that are banged up at the running back position that he could help. We didn't get the answer we were hoping for."
Could the "teams that are banged up at the running back position" be referring to the Denver Broncos?
Well, since Denver has four running backs on injured reserve, it is a definite possibility.
The Broncos were very interested in James when he was a free agent in 2006, but were obviously outbid by the Cardinals.
When asked about the request, Cardinals General Manager, Rod Graves, said Rosenhaus asked if the team would consider releasing ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Edgerrin James, Arizona Cardinals

Casey Wiegmann: Giving Credit Where It's Due

Casey Wiegmann is not a household name. The only fans who are likely to remember him off the top of their head are those in Kansas City and Denver. I believe that all offensive lineman are underrated and should be recognized for the integral role they play in helping their team win games.
Wiegmann is a 35-year old center who has 13 seasons of experience under his belt. He has spent time with Indianapolis, NYJ, Chicago, and Kansas City before signing with Denver this past offseason.
He was brought in as a backup to mainstay Tom Nalen, but it soon became apparent that Nalen's season, and possibly his career, were going to be over before the season even started.
That was no problem for Wiegmann, however. He comes into Week 12 riding the NFL's longest streak of consecutive starts and most consecutive snaps played. This man is incredibly durable. He has not missed a game since 2001 (knock on the proverbial wood) and has 7,062 snaps since then.
He has served as the anchor (as a center often ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Casey Wiegmann, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Jay Cutler

Denver Broncos' First-Year Tackles May Be the NFL's Best Duo

Jay Cutler is currently second in the AFC in Pro-Bowl voting among quarterbacks. A large reason for that success (no pun intended) has been the play of rookie left tackle Ryan Clady and first-year starter at right tackle, Ryan Harris.
Clady, the Broncos' first-round pick out of Boise State has been one of the better tackles in the NFL this season.
He holds the duty of protecting Cutler's blind side every week, and he does it better than nearly everyone in the NFL.
Through his first 10 games in the NFL, the star rookie has given up only one half of a sacks and has helped enable Jay Cutler to throw for the third most yardage in the league this season.
A behemoth, standing at 6'6", 325 pounds, Clady has had a "Joe Thomas"-like impact for the Broncos this season.
When long-time Bronco Matt Lepsis retired, it was expected that second-year pro Ryan Harris would maintain his duties in the left tackle slot. When Denver had the opportunity to draft the aforementioned Clady, it was ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Ryan Clady, Jay Cutler, Ryan Harris

Raiders-Broncos: Fear the Ones That Have Nothing to Lose

It's a simple, time-honored phrase.
But for Oakland, and a season that has had nothing go right, this is what Oakland's resigned to do.
Play the spoiler.
Oakland, in their last six games, face several teams that are fighting to get into the playoffs. Denver, San Diego, Tampa Bay, New England are in the upper slice, while Houston and Kansas City are in the lower terms.
Oakland, to that degree, has had close games. Four of these, against Miami, Buffalo, Carolina, and San Diego, would have made the Raiders a 6-4 team. But of other reasons, they now sit out of the playoff picture.
So how does a team go about leading into the next year?
Making upsets worthwhile.
The game against Denver has obvious reasons. First of all, Denver train-wrecked Oakland's season in the opener, on national TV, and started the speculation that Davis wanted Kiffin out. Add in the history of these two clubs, that when they play, they seem to play at a higher level...and you have the settings for an upset.
Take ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Jay Cutler

Denver Broncos: Beware The Trap Game

Let's reminisce, shall we? The date? September 28, 2008. The place? Arrowhead Stadium. The situation? The 3-0 Denver Broncos saunter into Kansas City to face the 0-3 Chiefs.
The Broncos, coming off three heart-stopping victories thanks to their high-octane offense, were supposed to waltz into KC and wipe the floor with a team that hadn't won a football game since October 21, 2007.
Funny thing happened on the way to that victory though.
Nobody told the Chiefs.
In a sloppy game that included a fumble each from Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal, and two interceptions by Cutler, the Chiefs gained 213 yards on the ground and trampled the Broncos 33-19.
Fast forward to today.
Coming off two comeback wins against the Browns and Falcons, the Broncos have played with a rejuvenated confidence epitomized by Jay Cutler taking control in the fourth quarter of each game to lead his team down the field and onto victory.
At 6-4 and with a two game lead in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Atlanta Falcons

Broncos-Raiders: Denver Looks To Continue Second-Half Surge Against Oakland

The storied rivalry between the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders will write yet another chapter Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High.
The first place Broncos (6-4) are coming off of two of their more gutsy wins this season.
Plagued by injuries on both sides of the ball, the Broncos have rebounded from three straight losses and beat the Browns and Falcons, and they have done so thanks large in part to the play of their outstanding rookie class.
Inversely, the Oakland Raiders went from what was supposed to be the surprise team of the NFL to the duds that they truly are deep down, and it begins with Al Davis.
Davis fired former Head Coach Lane Kiffin and cut ties with Oakland's most expensive offseason acquisition in DeAngelo Hall.
Still, the young Raiders have a chance to prove themselves on a big stage against the division leaders.
Since Mike Shanahan became the Head Coach of the Denver Broncos after being fired in Oakland (much similar to the way Kiffin was punted out), he has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, Lane Kiffin

Denver Broncos looking past Girlie-men Oakland Raiders

In the Denver Post this week, not only are they posting pictures of Al Davis and asking for readers to send in their mocking captions; they are already talking about the Denver Bronco's Nov. 30th game against the New York Jets. Blog posts in Denver Bronco forums talk about how the two division leading teams of the Jets and Broncos should be playing in prime time Nov. 30th for the two prolific offenses with stud Quarterbacks to dual it out. Who can blame the Denver Broncos and their Rocky Mountain fanbase after the beatdown they put on the Oakland Raiders in their first game of the season. The Broncos embarrassed the Raiders in Oakland and on national TV. Denver also beat Atlanta last Sunday and just a couple of weeks ago Atlanta blanked the Raiders 24-0. The Broncos are just far superior, with their creative, tricky, genius and Super Bowl winning Coach Mike Shanahan, their John-Elway-like QB in Jake Cutler, and their Orange Crush Defense. Compare that to the aspiring Raider ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons

The Denver Broncos Have Finally Learned How To Draft

By now, it is obvious that the Denver Broncos have come up gangbusters in the past few NFL drafts. In the past four drafts, the Broncos have built an explosive offense based on a core of young talent and stocked up barrels of players who have filled in admirably during the team’s recent flurry of injuries. Names like Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, and Ryan Clady have quickly become household names in Denver and around the league. What is not so widely acknowledged, however, is Denver’s utter futility in the draft before these prosperous years. From 2001-2004, the Broncos set a new standard for mediocre player evaluation, turning in four of the worst drafts by any team in recent memory. In a league where teams must build through the draft to survive, Denver used free agency and trades to put the bulk of its team together during this period. As the talent dwindled and free-agency moves turned sour, so did the team’s success.
Mr. Everything: Spencer Larsen Steps Up and Makes an Impact

I believe the NFL is all about guys stepping up. That means someone who is not necessarily known or acclaimed at a position stepping up and having a huge game, or a quarterback who is struggling stepping up and snapping out of it.
It could be a fullback stepping up to be a starting tailback (Peyton Hillis), or it could be a guy playing through an injury to help the team win a big game.
When guys step up, their teams have a good chance to win. Players always have the ability to step up, or make themselves better. Spencer Larsen (center of photo), rookie fullback for the Denver Broncos, stepped up on Sunday and his team won.
This rookie fullback had been playing on special teams all season and had been doing his job very competently. Fellow rookie Peyton Hillis was filling his position of starting fullback.
The Denver running unit quickly fell apart and Hillis moved to starting tailback, leaving the fullback position open.
During the first game when this was the case, Denver used a single ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Spencer Larsen, Denver Broncos, Jay Cutler, Atlanta Falcons, Peyton Hillis

For the first time this season, the Broncos looked like a complete team—and they did it with a bunch of no-namers and castoffs.
Headlined by Spencer Larsen, the FB/LB who started on both offense and defense, Denver put together a team that had only one thing in common: They wanted to win, and they wanted it bad.
Their starting lineup featured a white running back, a fullback who also started at linebacker, a rookie tackle and receiver, two third-string linebackers (including two rookies), and an undrafted rookie free agent starting in place of the injured Champ Bailey.
How good were there chances?
Well, outside of Denver diehards and Mike Golic of ESPN, I doubt very many, if any at all, thought the Broncos would have a chance.
They proved their doubters wrong, and they did it in very impressive fashion.

Broncos-Falcons: Denver's Rookies Pay Huge Dividends in Win Over Atlanta

As the Denver Broncos have now won two games in a row, notwithstanding their numerous injuries, the stellar rookie class of 2008 (featuring the likes of Eddie Royal and Ryan Clady) deserves much of the credit.
Undoubtedly, much of the plaudits should go to returned LDS missionary and former All Pac-10 performer, Spencer Larsen. Larsen, who served a two-year mission to Chile, honed his craft at Arizona and was a major force in Mike Stoops' defense for the Wildcats. (Incidentally, as my bio confirms, I was on my mission in Tucson, AZ, so it's cool to have a fellow returned missionary contributing to my favorite NFL team).
Larsen also became the first player in Broncos history, and the first NFL player since Orlando Brown of the Baltimore Ravens in 2003, to start on both offense and defense, as he got the nod at middle linebacker and fullback.
Although he left the defense in passing situations and deferred to stud fullback Peyton Hillis on the goal line (two touchdowns for the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Atlanta Falcons

Affixed with name tags to help veteran players and fans alike with the transition to the unplanned youth movement, a new batch of fresh faces gave everyone in Broncos Country hope for a team decimated by injuries and ridiculed for their attempts at containing opposing offenses.
Today, the Denver Broncos' depth was truly tested, and they answered the bell in a big way.
Not only did the Broncos have a player start on both offense and defense, only the fourth player to do so since 1990, but he aided a linebacking corps that didn't include a single starter from their opening night rumble with the Raiders.
Not only were these guys not expected to start this year; some even went undrafted coming out of college. All three played like they had something to prove.

Falcons-Broncos: Denver Overcomes Injuries and Atlanta, Wins 24-20

The Denver Broncos weren't supposed to play this way.
Coming into Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, Denver's running game was expected to be nonexistent.
Besieged by injuries, they turned to rookie fullback-turned-running back Peyton Hillis, fresh-off-the-practice-squad running back P.J. Pope, and re-signed journeyman running back Tatum Bell.
With the way Atlanta played defense last week against New Orleans' pass offense, there was good reason to believe the Falcons' defense would hold the lead.
Think again.
While the Falcons' players denied it, they seemed to lack their typical enthusiasm. Their mode of operation all season long has been to jump to an early lead with patient play from the offense and let the defense do the rest. Incidentally, that defense hadn't given up a first quarter touchdown—until Sunday.
Denver struck first, doing exactly what was expected of them. The running game was relied upon little as Cutler spread the ball around to different receivers (six ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos
