Week 12 NFL Predictions: Playoffs or Not?

Green Bay plays Detroit in the early Thanksgiving game. The Packers have good match-ups and can control this game. Take Green Bay to be at 7-4 possibly. Dallas has a showcase game against Oakland in the house that Jerry built. Dallas wins on Thanksgiving, almost always. Home teams on holidays are money. The last Thanksgiving game is Denver at home against the Giants. Both teams need the win. Denver and the home crowd should win a close one. Seattle is at the St. Louis rest stop in the NFL. Seattle gets a win at last. Miami at 5-5 can handle Buffalo, and stay in a playoff race, A string of wins is needed. Cleveland travels to Cincinnati and gets mauled by the hungry Bengals. The Bengals will be at a healthy 9-2, and the second-best team in the AFC. Houston can put themselves in a nice position, and maybe a 7-4 record. This would be my upset pick of the week. The Broncos have lost three consecutive games, but one area that hasn't slumped is the pass rush. Linebackers Elvis Dumervil and Andra Davis have led the consistent charge upfield, which resulted in five sacks of Rivers in Week 6, a game won by Denver, 34-23. Lorenzo Alexander had a big hit on special teams and also forced a fumble on defense during the Redskins' 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos last week. The Redskins face the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday, and special teams faces a Texas-sized challenge. Dallas has the league's fourth-ranked offense, Tony Romo is a big-play quarterback and the team has many playmakers in the passing and running games. So the Redskins have to perform well on kickoff and punt coverage to make things as difficult as possible for the Cowboys. "Our coverage game has to be on the top of our list," Alexander said. In the wake of Ladell Betts' 114-yard performance against Denver, this question has arisen: Has he surpassed Clinton Portis as the team's best running back? While it may be too early to give a definitive answer to that question, the results speak for themselves (for at least one game). The Washington Redskins put on their best offensive performance of the year versus the Broncos. Jason Campbell was not prolific, but he was efficient enough in the passing game to allow Washington to win. Denver was not able to apply constant pressure, because the Skins' running game was churning out yards. For the first time in 2009, the Redskins had a 100+ yard rusher. Anyone who has watched Washington play this year would have to admit that Clinton Portis has been hesitant at times. Redskins punter/touchdown passer and scorer Hunter Smith has been named NFC special teams player of the week, the NFL has announced. Smith, in case you've forgotten, threw the first pass of his career and hit Mike Sellers for a 35-yard TD on a fake field-goal attempt (he is the holder for Shaun Suisham) in the Redskins' 27-17 victory over Denver on Sunday. He also scored on an 8-yard TD run against the Giants in the season opener and is the first special-teams player in NFL history to rush and pass for a TD in a single season. Smith punted four times for a 38-yard net average against the Broncos. He previously was named AFC special teams player of the week when he played for Indianapolis in 2005.

Albert Haynesworth's mother, Linda, has held many jobs and at the moment is a semi-retired truck driver. She said she has no plans to become a motivational speaker, but she apparently had a positive affect on the Redskins last week. The Redskins have declined to make Sherman Lewis available to the media since he began calling passing plays in the Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Anyone who watched cornerback Carlos Rogers bite on Brandon Marshall's double move on Denver's first touchdown Sunday - a 40-yard pass - or saw Marshall follow up with a 75-yard scoring reception before the end of the first quarter would suspect that the Redskins have shoddy a pass defense. Indeed, Rogers was benched after that first score, and the secondary has had problems with big plays all year. But the numbers are stunning: The Redskins rank first in the NFL in pass defense, allowing just 162.7 yards per game. The reasons for this, of course, are varied, and it helps that five of the Redskins' nine opponents rank 21st or worse in the league in passing offense - Detroit, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Kansas City. I was on record as saying I didn't think the Redskins would win another game this season -- and I'm really glad I was wrong. The Redskins defeated the Denver Broncos, 27-17, at FedEx Field to end their losing streak at four games, and it was great to see hard-working running backs Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright play such huge roles. Betts rushed for a season-high 114 yards, had a solid 4.4-yard average and scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
