NFL players make enough money, don't they? Apparently, former Lions running back Tatum Bell didn't think so, because he stole new Lions' RB Rudi Johnson's bags. The Detroit Lions were looking for a bona fide running back, and after the Cincinnati Bengals released Johnson, the Lions were quick to bring him in to Ford Field. After a workout in Detroit, Lions' president Matt Millen liked what he saw from Johnson; apparently he was impressive enough to get a contract. The problem was though, with the former Pro Bowl running back coming in, Bell would be released. In a presumable moment of anger, Bell stole two Gucci bags from Johnson, according to surveillance cameras, and had a woman return the baggage later—empty. That would be considered a "good deed" by Bell's standards, but he also took Johnson's undergarments and $200 from his money clip. You can speculate the reasons why Cincinnati released Rudi Johnson, their pro-bowl running back. He was coming off an injury shortened season due to his hamstring in which he played in 11 games and only racked up 497 yards and three touchdowns. Backup Kenny Watson took over for Johnson last season and played solidly for the Bengals and he comes at a much cheaper price tag. Its also been known that Cincinnati would like to give Chris Perry some playing time this season. Putting these factors into account and the rumor that the Bengals wanted a top flight receiver in exchange for Johnson in any possible trade, and you can see why the Pro-Bowler was released. Before I get into the 2008 Detroit Lions, I need to go on a little rant that’s vaguely Detroit-Lions related. Mike Martz is not a great offensive coordinator. He’s not an innovative offensive mind. He’s not the offensive Bill Belichick. He’s not even a good offensive coordinator. He’s a terrible offensive coordinator. Martz believes that he knows football—offensive football specifically—better than everyone else. His ego-driven talent evaluations and especially ego-driven game planning and play calling are similar to what you or I would put together while running a Madden 2008 franchise. First off, if you think this is serious, then don't bogart that joint. Although player-for-player trades are rare in the NFL, maybe this has some appeal. I know offering Matt Millen a wide receiver might be a tad cliche, but it might work. In the meantime, New England is trying to deal with the back-up QB question. Neither Cassel or Gutierrez really thrills me. Is it just m,e or does offering to Matt Millen Chad Jackson for their new backup QB make sense? From what I understand, Drew Henson is a Michigan Alum—like Tom Brady (ed. note: the two actually split time during Henson's brief tenure in Ann Arbor). They should have a lot to talk about. Derek Lofland from Fantasy Football Maniaxs Detroit has had a good preseason. In three games, they have outscored their opposition 66-26. They squeaked out a three-point win against the Giants before crushing Cincinnati and Cleveland. Jon Kitna has been very sharp in preseason. Kevin Smith has run the ball well. Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams have both impressed. The defense has not gotten pushed around. It’s not inconceivable that the Lions could contend for this division. They started the 2007 season 6-2 before fading to a 1-8 finish. Kevin Smith should allow them to run the ball better in 2008, and Kitna shouldn’t have as many interceptions now that the premier game manager Mike Martz is blessing the 49ers with his run-and-gun style. Green Bay has that Brett guy gone. Chicago is fielding an offense that figures to be somewhere between below average and terrible. That leaves Minnesota as the favorite. Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Trent Edwards returned to practice Tuesday after missing a week with a bruised right thigh. Edwards worked with the starting unit, which was without tackle Langston Walker, who watched from the sideline after hurting his left arm in a 20-7 win at Indianapolis on Sunday. Edwards' return means he'll likely see some playing time in the Bills preseason finale against Detroit on Thursday. He sat out the game against Indianapolis.

The Redskins have released three players: Vernon Fox, Babatunde Oshinowo and Dorian Smith. The Cleveland Browns looked horrible against the New York Giants after an 11 day lay-off. They didn’t look much better Saturday versus the Detroit Lions after a short five day break either. The Browns looked putrid on both sides of the ball failing to the Lion at Ford Field, 26-6. The loss dropped the Browns to 0-3 on the pre-season. Speaking of threes, the Browns first team offense went three and out on its first three series of the game. After the first quarter, the Lions on led 6-0 but you would not have known that from the stat line. The Lions out-gained Cleveland 114 yard to 18 and held the ball for 11:37 compared the Browns’ 3:23. Brady Quinn was a pedestrian 14-24 for 106 yards on the afternoon. He did not complete a pass over 16 yards and averages a measly 4.4 yards an attempt.
