Steve Slaton Retains Starting Job: Fantasy Impact

Houston Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak has re-named Steve Slaton as the starting running back for Monday night's game against the Tennessee Titans, according to Nick Scurfield, via Twitter.
Slaton was benched three weeks ago after fumbling for the third time in three games, and left the Texans victory over the Buffalo Bills with just three total touches for 11 yards.
Back-up Ryan Moats stepped in after Slaton's exit and proceeded to run for over 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns, prompting Kubiak to name Moats the starter for Week 10's match against the Indianapolis Colts .
Despite being listed as the back-up, Slaton still found his way to nine touches, but as only able to rack up 29 yards, while also scoring one touchdown on the ground.
Fantasy Perspective: This is a huge fuss about nothing, as we saw last week that being the starting running back in Houston doesn't exactly mean you get all the carries.
Houston basically just rides the hot hand, and Slaton is still a risky ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Houston Texans, Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats, Tennessee Titans, Fantasy Football

Tennessee receiver Justin Gage is out for the Titans' game against the Texans with broken bones in his lower back.

Gage has not practiced since breaking the transverse process bones in his back at San Francisco on Nov. 8. Rookie Kenny Britt will make a second consecutive start at Houston on Monday night.

Coach Jeff Fisher also ruled out linebacker Colin Allred because of a hamstring that kept him out of a third straight practice Saturday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Justin Gage, San Francisco 49ers, Kenny Britt, Jeff Fisher

The NFL has fined Houston Texans safety Eugene Wilson $5,000 for hitting Colts tight end Dallas Clark during last weekend's game. Wilson was penalized for unnecessary roughness for the hit, which came in the second quarter and the Colts leading 13-0. Indianapolis won the game 20-17.
Midseason All-Pro team, plus first-half awards

Lots of new faces on the midseason All-Pro team, and lots of tough choices. Hard to leave off Adrian Peterson, because I believe he's the best running back in football, hands down. Hard to leave off defensive end Trent Cole of the Eagles, middle linebacker Curtis Lofton of the Falcons and Owen Daniels of the Texans, too; Daniels had six terrific games before going out for the season. But I tried to recognize some new men playing very well, and I look forward to hearing your nominations.

Dime Package: Colts Win, but Struggle Against Texans

There's something somewhat comforting about reaching the midway point at 8-0. It means that even a 4-4 meltdown to end the season would mean the Colts would reach that historic 12-win mark. Still, there's plenty of questions for a team that's yet to taste defeat in 2009.
 10. So much for the offensive fireworks, huh?
There should have been plenty of fireworks to start the game. The first four Colts offensive positions got inside the Texans' 35 yard line. Four deep drives netted just 13 points. The Colts could have killed the Texans early. Instead, they let them hang around and a lot of blood pressure levels went up in Colts nation.
 9. Why the offensive struggle?
There were some strange play calls. There was the doomed play action on fourth down on the opening drive, and the odd screen play where Austin Collie got a pass interference call, but the play didn't result in a first down anyway. They moved the ball effectively, but as Coach Jim Caldwell put it after the game, they simply didn't ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans

Houston, We (I) Have a Solution: Bring In Larry Johnson

Since becoming an FC for the New York Giants, I have rarely stepped outside the boundaries of the Giants and written an objective piece about the NFL. Before that, I wrote several pieces on the NFL, including mock drafts and playoff predictions.
I finally decided to step outside those boundries, as I believe a golden opportunity has been presented to solve the runningback situation in Houston.
As of this morning, Larry Johnson was cut by the Chiefs.
Before they cut ties with the disgruntled runningback who, among other things, referred to his coach with a gay slur, I would never have suggested a trade for this player.
But with a two-time 1700-yard rusher on the waiver wire, the Texans should look no further than this guy to solve their runningback woes.
I know most of you will say I'm a lunatic or something of the sort for suggesting the Texans bring in such a poor character guy; but I have a theory.
Once Larry Johnson lost his pro bowl offensive line to retirement, his play suffered, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Houston Texans, Larry Johnson

Texans Provide Fans With Hope, Disappointment

The Houston Texans season continues to ride the sea of emotions, cresting with exhilarating highs but dragged down by missed opportunities.
What we experienced on Sunday was an educational experience that showed us both how good the Texans can be and how far they still have to go to get there.
Despite a myriad of errors in the first half of their game against the Colts, the team was able to bounce back and give themselves an opportunity to win.
But they didn't.
What we really learned this weekend was the difference between the Colts and the Texans, and why one is undefeated and the other will be fighting for a wild-card berth.
Let's start with the positive though—and if you can look beyond the final score, there were many positives for Houston fans.
For example, for the first time since the reinvention of the defense, starting with the drafting of Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans in 2006, the team has the look of finally harnessing all of that talent and developing a top-ranked defense. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Houston Texans
