Not All on Jason Campbell

Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell took all the heat for the Redskins' struggles down the stretch losing six out of the last eight games after starting 6-2.
But it's not Campbell's fault learning three different offenses in his four years. It's not his fault that the offensive line struggles to protect him, and it's not his fault that both his receivers are 5-10. Campbell showed that he can be a franchise quarterback by throwing 13 touchdown passes and only six interceptions for the year.
Campbell ran into some great defenses in the second half of the season by playing teams like Steelers, Giants, Ravens, and Eagles. Any NFL quarterback will have the same struggles if they play those kind of defenses.
With a new West Coast offense, Campbell did well leading the redskins to an 8-8 season, not a great season or bad season. Campbell has shown he is one of the great quarterbacks in the league, and when you mention Joe Flacco, Jay Cutler, Phillip Rivers, Campbell's name should be in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jason Campbell, Washington Redskins, Kerry Collins

Washington Redskins: What Went Wrong in 2009

So that's that.
With their loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the 2008 Washington Redskins (8-8) capped off a rollercoaster season—one that began with tumultuous regime change, had their fans breathing the rarified air of contenders in October, and saw them brought precipitously back to earth as pretenders in December.
Along the way, there were great moments we won’t soon forget—like the brilliant Campbell-to-Moss bomb against New Orleans that gave the Redskins life in week two, and the back-to-back road wins in Dallas and Philadelphia to reach 4-1 and ignite January dreams.
There were crushing moments we’d like to forget—like the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to town and systematically throttling the 6-2 Redskins under the bright lights of Monday Night Football, exposing the chasm between the Redskins and the NFL elite ... and the crushing Mike Sellers’ goal-line fumble in Cincinnati that effectively ended the 2008 season.
And so now ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jason Campbell

Cerrato Looks Ahead

Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive vice president for football operations, praised coach Jim Zorn most for his work with quarterback Jason Campbell and, while stopping well short of declaring Campbell the quarterback of the future (that will be evaluated on a yearly basis, he said), did toss a few compliments Campbell's way. In other newsy-type nuggets (there weren't many and he had spoken recently with Jason Reid) in the roughly 15-minute meeting with the media, Cerrato said that any changes in the coaching staff would be Zorn's call entirely ("That's up to Jim."). Zorn made it clear at his press conference Monday that he was pleased with his staff and saw no need to make changes.

Zorn Lays Out Offseason Plans

Jim Zorn donned a suit and tie to address his team for the final time this season, wanting to set a tone for the offseason. Zorn, his staff and the football operations side will spend the coming weeks planning the course of the organization, and while he anticipates there will be changes, he is unsure of specifics at this point. Zorn was unequivocal that Jason Campbell is the quarterback, and was adamant that it is his desire to retain his entire coaching staff after the 8-8 finish. When asked whether he intends to divest himself of any of his duties - play-calling, working with quarterbacks - he offered a firm "no." He believes that calling plays and working with the quarterbacks are two of his strengths and noted, "We got better at the quarterback position."

Campbell on the Offense

Quarterback Jason Campbell said he is not focusing on his contract situation - it expires after the 2009 season - and is bracing for possible "shocking" personnel moves as the Redskins proceed through the offseason. "I'm not even worried about it," Campbell said when asked whether he thought he did enough to command a contract extension. "You don't do what you do, you do what you're asked to do." Campbell said that the Redskins' lack of options in the passing game limited their production in the second half of the season, and he hopes rookies Fred Davis, Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas make big strides. He wants to work with them as much as possible this offseason. "It will be good to have them here for the offseason, and I'm pretty sure those guys will be sticking around catching some balls, catching some passes," Campbell said. The Redskins were counting

Skins Lead by 10 at Halftime

This turned out to be one of the better quarters of the season (with the game turning, by the way, on that bizarre Martz formation and call on third-and-one). The Redskins scored on three straight drives, which is pretty rare, and put up two TDs in the same quarter after scoring just seven offensive TDs in the previous seven games. They spread the ball around in the red zone, and have Clinton Portis is good form now. Carlos Rogers jumped a route and held onto a slip-sliding ball for a big INT (Carlos Rogers held onto the ball?), and returned it 31 yards to set up a field goal. And Suisham actually connected on the field goal. Jason Campbell is doing some excellent work, protecting the football and making huge third down plays with his feet. His last run inside the red zone, holding off the DB blitz, was as

Niners up 7-0 after 1 Quarter

The Redskins were getting ripped up on defense. The Niners had lots of gashing runs; why Mike Martz threw a pass on that last third and 1, with a chance to keep running it down their throats, well, guess that's why he's a genius. At the endof the quarter, the Skins started showing signs of life on offense. Nice little drive they have going here. Jason Campbell finally slid at the end of a scramble, too, so that's a good sign.
