Evaluating Teams Looking for Head Coaches: Part One of Four

After the sudden, and somewhat alarming, firing of Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, and the more expected firings of Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini, and Rod Marinelli, these four teams (Denver, Cleveland, NY Jets, and Detroit, respectively) are searching for new head coaches.
However, the head-coaching market is somewhat thin this year, and it is always hard to anticipate which coordinators will be available for interviews. This leaves us to speculate and analyze which of these teams would be the most appealing for a new head coach to sign up with. The cases for these teams are as follows.
In this edition, we take a look at the Denver Broncos.

  Offense
Early in the season, Jay Cutler and the Bronco's offense looked to be a juggernaut, with the emergence of late-round-gem receiver Eddie Royal giving Cutler a quick, speedy, versatile player. Brandon Marshall finally proved himself to be one of the best in the game at his position with a 18 catch performance in Week ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Jay Cutler

The Future Of The Broncos

The future is always an intriguing thing to me. With 2009 swiftly descending upon us, I guess that now is a good time for we Broncos fans to come to terms with what the future holds, especially since Mike Shanahan has been fired.
First of all, let me make something clear right now: I do not fault Pat Bowlen, he did what he felt he had to do for the betterment of the franchise and we'll see what comes out of it.
Rather than prophesize doom and gloom, I'm going to accentuate positives, such as Eddie Royal as pictured above.
Royal's stats (91 rec, 980 yards, 5 TD's) are a positive factor in moving forward as are the impressive credentials of fellow rookie Ryan Clady who has already asserted himself as the leader of an outstanding offensive line.
Obviously, everyone knows about the sordid defense which gave up 28 points a game and surrendered nearly 380 yards a contest.
Those areas must be corrected and as I've stated previously, Bill Cowher seems to be the right man for the job.
The only ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, Jay Cutler

Players Reactaion to Mike Shanahan Firing

Apparently the move to fire Mike Shanahan came from left field as some of his players were shocked to say the least when they heard the news.
  Rookie Fullback/Linebacker Spencer Larsen:
“I’m very shocked, extremely shocked. I don’t think any of us saw this coming.”
  Quarterback Jay Cutler:
“I’m disappointed, I’m shocked, I’m not happy about it, I’m not pleased with it at all,” Cutler said by phone Tuesday. “We had zero inkling this was going to happen. I didn’t have a clue...
“I think with the offensive staff we had, we were moving ahead,” Cutler said. “I had just met with Mike to go over everything, talk about the things we wanted to do, make sure we were going the right way on offense.
“I hope it all works out. But I know I’m disappointed, I’m not happy, and it’s a lot to think about. I just want to continue the things were able to do this year on offense and get better ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Mike Shanahan, Jay Cutler, Denver Broncos, Spencer Larsen

Jay Cutler Watched the Denver Broncos' Playoff Hopes Slip Away

On Sunday night, a great battle was fought to lay claim to the title. One team, had earlier taken control of the division, but recently faltered. The other, was gutting it out, working to keep the dream alive, and in a way, fueled by revenge.
The setting took place by the water, and what happened will be remembered for a long time.
The next morning, the shock was still there. Denver went from being a win away from a playoff berth.
They had beat, the at-the-time number one team in the AFC, the Jets, on their home turf. They didn't seem to have any problem with the concept— one win, and we're in .
But that one, turned elusive.
Many Bronco fans might say, what exactly happened, in the last three weeks? You might need to look five weeks back, to get a better idea.
Yep, back to the Raiders' win in Denver, preceding the Jets game.
Looking at that game, the Broncos were taking it lightly. After all, Oakland had been humiliated, beaten up, and demoralized at home to open the season. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Jay Cutler, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets

Is Jay Cutler a Punk?

"I don't know, you tell me."
A phrase that can be heard at a Jay Cutler press conference.
In between rolling his eyes and giving curt responses, the phrase "I don't know, you tell me," is a point at which you know the press conference is about to end.
Not because all the questions have been asked. Or all the answers have been given.
Because the subject is unwilling to respond in a civilized manner.
Jay Cutler has been described as spoiled, smug, a guy with the personality of a doorstop.
But the one description that is sticking the most is, Jay Cutler is a punk.
In a radio interview with Kevin Acee, Matt Wilhelm touched on this when he said, "He is a punk, I'm just not a huge fan of his. He and Tony Gonzalez are the biggest crybabies in the league."
Where does Wilhelm's animosity stem from? Much of it can be traced back to Christmas Eve 2007.
The Chargers were facing the Broncos and the Chargers were about to defeat a Cutler-led Broncos team for the fourth straight time. Both teams ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers

Clearly, the defense is the starting point. There were a lot of injuries this season, but the performance was not good even at full strength and always failed Denver in the big moments down the stretch this season.
They need to find a way to stop the rush and pressure the quarterback as well as get better play from their linebackers—or somehow return John Lynch, Al Wilson, Ian Gold, and Bill ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Jay Cutler, Daniel Graham

I Was Wrong: San Diego Chargers Thump Denver Broncos

I make mistakes much more often than I'd prefer.
With that said, I grudgingly tip my hat to the Chargers for being the better team.
Obviously the Broncos have numerous problems to fix on the defensive side of the ball and if Chargers fans find this article, more power to them.
The point of the matter is they have the dynamic Indianapolis Colts to worry about and that game should be exciting.
I am looking forward to all of the postseason matchups as all four of them over the course of next weekend promise to be magnificent.
As for my final take on the Broncos' season, a -17 turnover ratio is no way to win football games consistently and while the season had its bright moments, expectations have risen.
Jay Cutler and Ryan Clady are nice pieces to build around but I bid 2008 adieu in hopes that 2009 will be better.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Jay Cutler, Ryan Clady

San Diego Chargers Dominate Denver Broncos and Henry Gula Is a Douche

Last week Henry Gula wrote an article about what a shame it would be for the Chargers and Philip Rivers to be in the playoffs. He goes on to talk about how deserving the Denver Broncos and their elite quarterback are. If I had to bet I would bet that at about 9:30 est time Henry was saying the same thing as his so called elite QB " What the F**K" when they were getting completely embarrassedby the Chargers on national TV. I can't speak for everyone out there but when I think of an elite quarterback I think of someone who wins games when they really matter (like the last three weeks). In the three years as a starter Philip Rivers has an astonishing 33-15 win loss record, eight of them coming this year where they lost all eight games by a total of 34 pts that's 4.25 pts per game. Reaching the playoffs ALL THREE YEARS. While Jay Cutler in his two years as a starter has a record of 17 and 15 very average rather than elite if you ask me. He reached the same amount of losses as Rivers in 16 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Philip Rivers, Jay Cutler

Rivers to Cutler and Favre: You Can Have the Pro Bowl; I'm in the Playoffs!

8-8 is obviously good enough. With a win over Denver, the San Diego Chargers captured the AFC West title and the fourth seed in the AFC playoffs.
Phillip Rivers is laughing right now.
No, I'm not standing next to him, I'm just guessing. That's what I'd be doing right about now.
The NFL's highest highest-rated passer turned in a workman-like performance against division rival Denver tonight, going 15-for-20 for 201 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in route to a 52-21 blowout. In front of thousands of screaming hometown fans, Rivers led his team to a decisive victory that gives the Chargers a home playoff game next weekend, and sent the Denver Broncos home wondering about a season that could have been.
Rivers was aided in his effort by running backs Darren Sproles, who had 115 yards and a touchdown, and Ladanian Tomlinson, who was just shy of 100 yards rushing, and punched it in for three scores.
To anyone saying LT has lost a step: it looks like he found it tonight.
Rivers had ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Brett Favre, Jay Cutler, Pro Bowl

Broncos-Chargers: Rivers Mouth and Play Runs Deep

I read the comments section of a recent article and came across this:
CUTLER: Cue Up The Ludicrous Elway Reference
It's a fact: Broncos fans are holding Jay Cutler harmless for being a jerk, while Chargers fans are doing the same thing with Philip Rivers.
***Newsflash***
Both guys are been jerks, that's why we love them.
The thing you've got to love most about these two guys is their competitive nature. They can't stand losing, which means that they will not continue to lose.
One Denver fan essentially wrote that he could take his Broncos getting rolled by Peyton Manning—over Philip Rivers—because Manning is much more professional than the arrogant Philip Rivers. Charger fans should love that.
Charger fan ucsd_guy wrote:
You, and many Broncos fan, will not even entertain that perhaps it was Cutler that started it all last year with his trash talking and grabbing his crotch. Instead you claim that it was PR that was responsible from what you ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philip Rivers, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Jay Cutler

Fantasy Football Week 17 Rundown

Welcome to Week 17 of the NFL , which is generally the hardest week of the season for fantasy football fanatics. The fate of many NFL teams has been decided. Some teams have already locked their playoff positions, while others are planning family vacations and golf outings. Week 17 ends up being a lot like Week Four of the preseason, where many teams rest star players. Teams either want to avoid an injury to a player that they will need if they are going to make a playoff run or if a team is out of the playoffs they may play their back-ups so that they can see how they look in a game situation. This is the last chance to see many players in a game situation before the NFL Draft .
So if you are in a league in which you have a meaningful game Week 17, please enjoy the Bruno Boys Weekly Rundown as we try and help you find some of the players that will be playing Week17, hopefully you are putting the finishing touches on a fantasy football championship.
Chargers-Broncos: How the West Will Be Won

It has come to this. For the Chargers and their fans it all comes down to one game. One game against the Denver Broncos.
Philip Rivers, the league's leading quarterback in rating and touchdowns, will take the field against their division rivals, the Denver Broncos, who will be lead by QB Jay Cutler.
Cutler who has said he is better than Elway has proved he is. Better at losing that is.
Three weeks ago, the Broncos practically had the AFC west wrapped up. All they needed was a win or a Chargers loss to clinch the division. So much for counting on the Bolts to lose!
The Chargers have won their last three coming into Week 17. Two of them not so beautifully but the last convincingly. This sets the stage for the Broncos and Jay Cutler to get a spot in history.
The spot will be the one of the only team to ever blow a three game lead with three games left and get knocked out of playoff contention.
The San Diego Chargers are looking to revitalize themselves. With a win Sunday they will be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers

A Win Means Everything: Denver Broncos Vs. San Diego Chargers

It doesn't get anymore clutch than this game right here. Denver at 8-7 needs to win in order to make the playoffs. Riding a three-game winning streak, the San Diego Chargers are hungry for a win to finish off one of the greatest finishes in NFL history. On Thursday it was reported that San Diego linebacker Matt Wilhelm doesn't like Jay Cutler saying "Jay Cutler is a punk. I'm just not a big fan of his."
Do the comments add fuel to the fire? The answer is yes. In my opinion I think Jay Cutler is a great person and a role model. If anyone is a punk it's Philip Rivers after the way he's yelled at fans and at the opposing team. Wilhelm on the year has 50 tackles and an interception. Denver on Sunday was treated to their seventh loss of the year courtesy of the Buffalo Bills. The final score was 30-23. Cutler showed why he is in the Pro Bowl, throwing for 359 yards. 129 of those yards went to Pro-Bowler Brandon Marshall. Denver had 181 yards on the ground which is a good sign. Two more running backs ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall

Broncos-Chargers: Thoughts on Sunday Play-in Game

I'm excited for Sunday night's "it should never have come to this" game in San Diego.
Making the playoffs, even if it's only a formality, would be a good achievement for a team that has been absent from the postseason recently.
Let's be honest, though—there are no realistic expectations that a victory over the Chargers would propel my beloved Broncos on a Giants-like run to the Super Bowl.
This game would serve two purposes:
1) The obvious: Making the playoffs, even at 9-7, means something.
2) Seeing what Jay Cutler can do under pressure on a bigger stage.
Nobody is going to confuse this injury-riddled team, with major defensive problems yet to be resolved, as a top contender. Yet, for a young team with a power-packed offense (even with a half-dozen starting RBs on the shelf) there is a potential to make a little noise in the playoffs—if the offense led by Cutler is at its highest level.
Keeping the opposing team's offense off the field, and minimizing the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler is Not a Punk: Why the NFL Needs More Players Like Him

San Diego Chargers linebacker Matt Wilhelm made no effort to hide his feelings regarding Jay Cutler to start a recent radio interview.
"He is a punk. I'm just not a huge fan of his," Wilhelm told Kevin Acee after being prompted on XX 1090 .
And after the Denver Broncos sent the New York Jets skidding off the runway, safety Kerry Rhodes told reporters , "I don't like him, I don't want to talk about him."
Where did all of this come from? It can't possibly be because Cutler is sure of himself, is it? Is that really the problem?
I'm going to take a shot in the dark here. I truly do believe I will be all alone—but the NFL needs more players like Jay Cutler.
There are plenty of real punks in the league. There's no need to shift the focus to one guy whose sole interest revolves around being great, proving it, and challenging history in the process.
Some people wondered how Cutler could have the audacity to compare his arm to Denver Broncos' Hall of Fame QB John Elway. I applauded him.
