Washington Redskins: Daniel Snyder's Toy Is Broken

Daniel Snyder's toy is not only broken its also boring.
The Washington Redskins looked sluggish, tired, and out of sync.
The franchise QB, Jason Campbell, still looks lost. The new coach, Jim Zorn, looks like he's in over his head. The coordinators hired by the owner not by the head coach look like they can't coordinate with each other.
The clock management, particularly late in the game, was horrific. The teams inability to capitalize on the mistakes of the New York Giants, especially some poorly thrown passes by Eli Manning, was amazing. The team looks listless and leaderless.
The Redskins, despite of all of Daniels dough, looks far behind the Giants, the Dallas Cowboys, and even the aging Philadelphia Eagles.
And the Redskins aren't a young club. The oft injured franchise back, Clinton Portis has seven hard years and a lot of mileage on his meter. His backup, Ladell Betts, is a seven year vet also.
The teams best offensive lineman, OT Chris Samuels who threw a very cheap block ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Chase Daniel, Jim Zorn, New York Giants

From Jason La Canfora Three Redskins defensive backs are nursing injuries coming off a Week 1 loss to the New York Giants, but Coach Jim Zorn is optimistic at least two will be available for the Sept. 14 home opener against New Orleans. Corners Shawn Springs (calf) and Fred Smoot (hip pointer) are battling through discomfort but should bolster the secondary against the Saints.
Read my lips: No new blitzes

I finally had an evening off Thursday, so I was flipping channels between Andy Roddick and Eli Manning. This is what I concluded:

The target demographics are considerably different for these two sports. Tennis has commercials for oxygen therapy and catheters. Football has commercials for beer and more beer. Football viewers just need a few decades to age into tennis ads. Years from now, all the beer will lead to catheters and all that walking to the refrigerator will be facilitated by oxygen tanks.
Jim Zorn is the most paranoid football coach I’ve ever seen, even worse than Bill Belichick. He’s more worried about people reading his lips than he is about actually stopping the game clock when his team is losing by nine points with four minutes left. I suspect that even at home, around the kitchen table, he talks into a piece of paper for practice.
Archie Manning is starting to look a lot like Woody Allen.
For some reason, it took USA Network producers three sets to realize ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Andy Roddick, Jim Zorn, Eli Manning

Jason Reid looks ahead. And Jason La Canfora, who is driving, driving, driving, calls in these thoughts as he heads to Redskins Park for Jim Zorn's presser: I'm going to be banging the same drum I have been banging for a while now: It's hard to look at what we've seen on the offensive and defensive lines and predict good things are going to happen for this team. Maybe it's a matter of overestimating talent...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn

I must admit that I am shocked.
Not shocked at the NFL regular season opener's struggles for the Washington Redskins.
Not shocked that Redskins' quarterback Jason Campbell looked confused, particularly in the first half, of Thursday Night's game against the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.
Not shocked , per se , over the incredible amount of negative coverage of rookie Redskins' head coach, Jim Zorn's poor debut.
Not over the Washington media using the struggles of the "new look" Redskins against the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants to further vilify owner Daniel Snyder and his right hand man Vinny Cerrato.
Not shocked at the calls for Colt Brennan, the Redskins rookie (and third string) quarterback who looked like a real player in the preseason.
Not shocked that the Giants took an early lead, riding high on the emotions of their pre-game ceremonies, in which they hoisted their brand spanking new Super Bowl banner.

An 0-1 Start for Redskins Is in the Books

Back in the spring, when the gods delivered the NFL schedule, Redskins fans took a deep breath and wondered why the commissioner hates Jim Zorn. Starting with three NFC East games on the road out of the first five seemed daunting then. After last night, it seems even more so with New Orleans, everyone's boutique pick this year, coming into FedEx for the home opener a week from Sunday. What, exactly, went wrong in the...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn, New Orleans Saints

Jason Campbell, Redskins Look Unready for New Offense

For weeks now, football fans across the nation have been patiently awaiting the kickoff of the 2008 NFL season.
After watching the New York Giants host the Washington Redskins in the premiere game, one thing became evident: Jason Campbell is not ready to lead the Redskins offense under head coach Jim Zorn's offense.
The fourth-year quarterback out of Auburn appeared to be a couple of weeks away from knowing the new West Coast system put in place by Zorn. Campbell threw for just 133 yards on 27 attempts and went for the deep ball only a handful of times.
While some credit has to go to the Giants' defense for keeping the short routes in check that the West Coast system relies so heavily upon, much of the blame has to fall on the shoulders of the quarterback in this situation. In nearly every third down the Redskins faced, Campbell failed to find a receiver open beyond the first-down marker. The 'Skins converting on 3-of-13 third downs is evidence of this.
With a new head coach and system for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jason Campbell, Jim Zorn, New York Giants

Hello and welcome to the first live blog of the 2008 season. The buildup and the talking are over and it's time to see what we have in Jim Zorn's Washington Redskins.

It's finally here. The season has finally started. Well, in three hours the season has started. I've never anticipated an opening game like I do with this one. I waited 'til three hours before opening to write my first NFL article.
Now, to the topic at hand. I'm going to come straight out and say this. I can see Jim Zorn bringing a Super Bowl back to Washington. Maybe not this year...actually I'm sure not this year.
But give this man some time. Jim Zorn is a man who knows football. He has never been a head coach before, but he does have one thing that not too many coaches have: the trust and belief of all of his players.
Now, you may think that all players have to respect their coach and believe in them. That's not entirely true. Just look at what's been going on in Cincinnati with those Bengals.
Chad Johnson (a.k.a. Ocho Cinco) has been stirring the pot up there for a while. That organization has had more players with felony acts than any team in the last 10 years, possibly ever. Now, they ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins

The hiring of Jim Zorn as coach of the Washington Redskins is among several surprising moves made by teams.

Debate in the nation's capital swirls around experience. Who's qualified and who isn't? Who deserves the job and who's a pretender? When it comes to decision-making strength, is the backbone iron or origami?

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins

Zorn reiterated that his availability remains a game-time decision. "I'd say it's easily 50-50 whether he plays or not," Zorn said.

Rookie receiver Devin Thomas, Washington's top draft pick, is trying to make up for some lost time this week, but with just a few days before the season opener Thursday it's going to be difficult.
Jim Zorn's Identity Can Be Seen Through His Roster

A look at the final roster for the Washington Redskins tells me that Jim Zorn is hoping for the best but preparing for the worst when it comes to the team's offensive output in 2008.
Zorn and company kept 24 offensive players and 26 defenders. They kept five wide receivers when most thought it was certain that they would keep six, choosing instead to go with a sixth defensive end.
And the luxury of having a fourth running-back on the roster to stockpile some talent there was sacrificed in order to keep an extra defensive back around.
And, in reality, a number of offensive players either aren't ready to play or won't play if all goes as planned. Colt Brennan and Todd Collins go into the latter category, while the likes of Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, Chad Reinhardt, and Justin Geisinger fall under the designation of those who aren't playing at prime-time levels yet.
That leaves just 18 players to man the 11 offensive positions.
On the other hand, most of the defensive players will be counted ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins

Jon Jansen on the Bubble?

It has been pretty obvious to all who have watched the Washington Redskins this year that Jon Jansen has been struggling. It has been widely assumed, however, that Jansen would get some time in the regular season to work through his issues.
Maybe, maybe not, according to Jim Zorn.
The Redskins' head coach said today in his post-game presser that there is a "battle, a very close battle" between Jansen (who was known as "The Rock" before injuries put him out for 2004 and almost all of 2007) and second-year player Stephon Heyer for the starting right tackle job.
Zorn did, however, throw Jansen a bone saying that, in contrast to the aforementioned observations, Jansen has been "solid this preseason."
Heyer was praised as well, with Zorn saying that he "helped himself last night. He shored things up for us," allowing him to "compete for a position."
Should Heyer earn the starting job, one would have to wonder if Jansen would even make the team. If you're going for youth, why not go all the way? ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jon Jansen, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn

No lack of news coming from Jim Zorn's press conference. Hmm, where to start... Right tackle Jon Jansen is fighting for his job with Stephon Heyer. Zorn made it very clear that Jansen is in a battle and could be replaced by Heyer at some point. Jansen is the longest-serving Redskin player and received a big new contract after the 2006 season. Jansen has struggled in pass protection and Heyer was hurt but played well...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn, Jon Jansen, Stephon Heyer

The Washington Redskins Still Have Several Questions Unanswered

For the Redskins, and Head Coach Jim Zorn, the final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars did not go quite as planned.
Zorn had hoped to put together a successful series or two with his offensive starters on the field, "to get the bad taste out of their mouths" from last week's terrible performance. It didn't work out that way.
But that was not the only plan. Zorn and the rest of the Redskins' coaching staff also needed to get an answer to the most pressing question through out preseason: Which players do we keep?
Several players may have made these decisions easy, with solid performances, or with not-so-solid performances. Here are a few thoughts on the subject.
The battle for the backup spots at cornerback has been particularly intriguing. Rookies Justin Tryon and Matteral Richardson have stood out at times in each game.
Tryon has shown cover skills and physicality with strong tackling. But he has also shown an extreme inability to make a play on the ball and has been a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn

Jim Zorn has told players that, after their performance in a 47-3 loss Saturday night to Carolina, they need to prepare to play Thursday and veteran players told Jason Reid and Paul Tenorio that they agree. "Yeah, no doubt we have to do this," wide receiver Antwaan Randle El said. "With the way we played, it's just the right thing to do." Offensive coordinator Sherman Smith said that the group has too much pride "to...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn, Carolina Panthers, Antwaan Randle El, Sherman Smith

Jim Zorn Takes a Hard Lesson from the Washington Redskins' First Loss

It was the third preseason game, and Jim Zorn and his Redskins were ready to show the world what they were made of. So far, everything had gone rosy for the 'Skins, with three solid wins and good play by their starters.
It seemed like Week Three against the Panthers would be the week where the Redskins would prove how good they were. It only took the grimacing pain on Jason Taylor's face to show that it would be a long night for Washington.
It was not a night that any rookie coach would want to have. Nothing went right for the Redskins.
Jason Campbell almost had as many sacks (four) as first downs (six). The offensive line got trampled by Carolina's defensive line, and the Panthers seemed to move the chains without even trying. What was worst about all this was that Jim Zorn was trying really hard and nothing would work.
Jim Zorn even admitted that he is considering playing his starters longer than normal next week, something that is very rare in preseason. It looks ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn, Carolina Panthers

DE Jason Taylor out 10-14 days with knee sprain

Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor is expected to be sidelined 10-14 days with a sprained right knee, putting his availability in doubt for Washington's season opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 4.

Coach Jim Zorn said Taylor underwent an MRI on Sunday and estimated the six-time Pro Bowl pick will be out from 10 to 14 days. The six-time Pro Bowl pick was hurt in a 47-3 preseason loss to the Carolina Panther on Saturday. Initial X-rays taken Saturday night showed no serious damage.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jason Taylor, Pro Bowl, New York Giants, Jim Zorn

Taylor to Be Out 10 Days to 2 Weeks

Jim Zorn has confirmed that an MRI Sunday showed that Jason Taylor suffered only a sprained knee Saturday night in Charlotte. Jason Reid reports that Taylor, whose knee was hit in a pileup in the second quarter of the Redskins' 47-3 loss, will be out 10 days to two weeks and, Zorn said, the team will proceed cautiously with him. That means that whether he is ready for the opener isn't certain yet. Zorn would...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins, Jason Taylor
