A (Premature) Thanksgiving Slideshow: 10 Things the NFL Should Be Thankful For

Happy (early) turkey day, everyone. There's a lot to be thankful for. Your health, your family, your friends.

Some NFL personell, has a few things that they should be thankful for, too.

The Lions should be thankful that they have a victory, let alone two. Jim Zorn should be thankful that he still has a job.

In no particular order, here are 10 things the NFL should be thankful for. At the end of the article, there will be one thing the NFL should NOT be thankful for (hint: it's about the Seattle Seahawks).
Can the New York Giants Beat the Denver Broncos?

After the Giants beat the Falcons in week 11, they look to be back in winning form. But can they continue the success?
The win on Sunday did not imprees me for three reasons.
1. The Giants battery seamed to be all but empty in the fourth quarter on Sunday, they Giants have given up 38 points in the second half's of there past two game against Atlanta and San Dieago.
The Giants defense needs to step up if they want to help there team make the playoffs.
2. They beat a team that lost three of there last four games before coming in to Sunday, and the one team they beat was the Redskins.
3. They beat a Falcons team in OT that lost there best player RB Michael Turner and also lost there back-up RB Jerious Norwood. Atlanta started Jason Snelling who did not get a TD in the past two seasons and gave him two on this game.

I still think they are going to win on Thursday against the Broncos, and for that I also have three reasons
1. The good news on the Giants has been Eli Manning ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Kyle Orton

Chargers rout Broncos to gain West lead (AP)

It didn't matter which quarterback the Denver Broncos had under center Sunday. The San Diego Chargers bottled up both the rusty Chris Simms and the hobbled Kyle Orton. Philip Rivers and a dominant defense led the Chargers into sole possession of first place in the AFC West with a 32-3 drubbing of the Denver Broncos, who couldn't move the ball effectively behind either QB.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Chris Simms, Kyle Orton, Philip Rivers

More Than a Tailspin: The Denver Broncos Are Now in an All Out Free-Fall

It's official. The floodgates have opened. The Denver Broncos' three game tailspin is over. It's now a full on free-fall.
Today's 32-3 pounding at home to the rival San Diego Chargers is the fourth consecutive loss for the Broncos, and none of those games have really been close.
The Broncos are being dominated on offense, and their once vaunted defense is struggling to keep up. To their credit, they have been putting in their best effort, as they held the Chargers to only three touchdowns on seven red zone trips.
It has been now been clearly established that Chris Simms is not capable of competing in the NFL anymore. A once viable starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Simms was nearly killed three years ago when his spleen was ruptured in a game against the Carolina Panthers.
Simms was signed by the Broncos this offseason to be the primary backup and played well in preseason. However, in nearly four quarters of regular season action, Simms has failed to produce, totaling five completions on ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Kyle Orton, Chris Simms

Broncos QB Simms starts vs. Chargers (AP)

Chris Simms is starting an NFL game for the first time since he was nearly killed in a game three years ago. The Denver Broncos' backup quarterback got to nod over hobbled starter Kyle Orton, whose sprained ankle kept him out of practice all week. Orton threw a few passes at Invesco Field this morning but after several minutes went back into the locker room.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, Chris Simms, Denver Broncos, Invesco Field, San Diego Chargers

Week 12 NFL Predictions: Playoffs or Not?

Green Bay plays Detroit in the early Thanksgiving game. The Packers have good match-ups and can control this game. Take Green Bay to be at 7-4 possibly.
Dallas has a showcase game against Oakland in the house that Jerry built. Dallas wins on Thanksgiving, almost always. Home teams on holidays are money.
The last Thanksgiving game is Denver at home against the Giants. Both teams need the win. Denver and the home crowd should win a close one.
Seattle is at the St. Louis rest stop in the NFL. Seattle gets a win at last.
Miami at 5-5 can handle Buffalo, and stay in a playoff race, A string of wins is needed.
Cleveland travels to Cincinnati and gets mauled by the hungry Bengals. The Bengals will be at a healthy 9-2, and the second-best team in the AFC.
Houston can put themselves in a nice position, and maybe a 7-4 record. This would be my upset pick of the week. Houston at home. Matt Schaub gets points every week. Take care of the football, Houston.
Atlanta will outscore Tampa Bay by double ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Kyle Orton, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers

Kyle Orton missed a third consecutive practice Friday with a sprained left ankle.

Coach Josh McDaniels says the Denver Broncos quarterback's availability for Sunday's pivotal contest with San Diego will come down to a game-time decision.

Backup Chris Simms again took first-team practice repetitions, as he has all week in the absence of Orton, who was injured during last week's 27-17 loss at Washington.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos, Josh McDaniels, San Diego Chargers, Chris Simms, Washington Redskins

QB Simms may start for Broncos on Sunday (AP)

Chris Simms was taking snaps with the Denver Broncos' starters again Thursday. That makes it increasingly likely that Simms will start against San Diego on Sunday in place of Kyle Orton, who sprained his left ankle last week against Washington. Coach Josh McDaniels said Orton was feeling better, but Simms was the one under center during the portion of practice open to the media Thursday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos, Chris Simms, San Diego Chargers, Josh McDaniels

The ligaments in Kyle Orton's left ankle are torn. He certainly isn't.

Orton adamantly wants to start Sunday against San Diego and help the Denver Broncos snap out of a monthlong funk that has wiped out their 3 1/2-game cushion over the Chargers in the AFC West.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos

The Redskins' defense continued to give up big plays in Sunday's 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos at FedEx Field. Denver quarterback Kyle Orton and receiver Brandon Marshall combined on 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter. But Orton suffered an ankle injury and did not return after halftime, and the Broncos failed to produce points in the second half with backup quarterback Chris Simms directing the offense. poll by twiigs.com "It was the same thing with Atlanta, it was the same discussion with Philadelphia. Big plays has killed us," defensive end Andre Carter said. "But one thing about us is ... we talk about it. We don't point fingers. Sometimes it's an adrenaline rush, it's whatever, but we fight back. "It's something we have to work on. We've always discussed it week by week, big plays [have] been an issue.
After Inexcusable Loss, Reeling Broncos Must Put Up or Shut Up

This was the game they couldn't lose.
The 6-2 Broncos against the 2-6 Washington Redskins. The Redskins were thought to be a well-established "trainwreck." An incompetent owner, a terrible offense, a confused coach, and an angry fan base made Washington the laughing stock of the NFC East.
And what did the Denver Broncos do? They went into the Nation's Capital, and lost to them.
The Denver Broncos lost by ten points to the Washington Redskins. Inexcusable.
There are plenty of excuses. Kyle Orton was knocked out of the game after Redskins defensive end Brian Orakpo tackled him by the ankle.
In the second quarter, the Redskins lined up for a field goal, then went into punt formation, and then punter Hunter Smith threw the ball 35 yards downfield to the fullback for a touchdown. The Denver special teams were taken completely by surprise and had no answer for the trick play.
Chris Simms came in for Orton to start the second half and played "like crap" for lack of a better term.
Redskins come up with big play, trail 17-14

The Redskins had a problem with giving up the big play in the first quarter, but in the second quarter it was Washington that turned in the big play. The Redskins narrowly avoided another huge pass play at the start of the second quarter, as Kyle Orton missed a wide-open Eddie Royal down the field on third-and-16 for what would have been a 79-yard touchdown pass. Neither offense was able to move the ball on their next drives, but Washington took over on its own 41-yard line after Santana Moss was taken down by his facemask on a punt return. Jason Campbell scrambled for 13 yards, and Quinton Ganther, a running back who was only recently added to the roster, took a short pass for an 18-yard gain. Two incompletions and an intentional grounding had the Redskins facing fourth and 20 from the Denver 35-yard line, however, and the Redskins

Marshall exploits secondary as Broncos take lead

Trouble in the secondary cost the Redskins dearly in the opening quarter against the Broncos. Just a few days after strong safety Chris Horton was placed on season-ending injured reserve list, Kyle Orton and the Broncos exploited Washington's defensive backs on two big plays to take an early 14-7 lead. Brandon Marshall scored both scores - a 40-yarder and a 75-yarder - and both times Redskins' safeties were nowhere to be found. To start the game, the Broncos needed just four plays and two minutes before striking first, when Orton hooked up with Marshall on third-and-11. Cornerback Carlos Rogers was spun around on the coverage and had no safety help, which enabled Marshall to turn it into a 40-yard touchdown. But the Redskins answered with a good drive. The play-calling offered a welcome mix of runs and quick passes. A 17-yard run by Rock Cartwright - his longest since 2005

Step Up or Get Out: Denver's Key Players at Washington

Is it me, or is this year's team starting to remind anyone else a little bit of the 2006 Denver Broncos?
Personally, I hate to make comparisons to old teams. What happened three years ago should have no relevance to what's going to happen for the rest of this season. Still, the two teams are a little too similar to ignore.
That team, as you may remember, was famous for not allowing a single touchdown through their first 11 quarters of play and did not surrender more than 20 points in a game until their loss at home to the Indianapolis Colts in Week Eight. The offense wasn't scoring as many points as Mike Shannahan would have liked and he eventually benched Jake Plummer in favor of rookie quarterback Jay Cutler.
Until their last two games, the 2009 Broncos had not given up more than 25 points in a game nor had they been outscored in the second half. Or lost a game at all. The offense, though mostly efficient and turnover free, has struggled to put points on the board. Some in the media are ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, Kyle Orton

One Upped: Orton "Out-Bradys" Tom Brady

  Originally published Oct. 12, 2009
So you say Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton is a "game manager," eh?
Take a look at these statistics from Sunday's 20-17 overtime win over the New England Patriots : 35-of-48, 330 yards and two touchdowns. I don't hold his one interception against him, because it was a desperation heave at the end of the first half.
If Orton is a "game manager," then so is Brett Favre , Drew Brees , John Elway, and, oh yeah, Tom Brady .
For one game at least, Orton played Brady-style football better than Brady himself. Orton led a remarkable 98-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 17 after the Broncos trailed 17-7 at halftime.
New England got the ball back with two minutes remaining in regulation. Many thought it was going to be another Brady comeback because he has become so masterful at bringing his team back late when the game is on the line.
Not this time.
First, the Broncos defense stopped the Patriots on crucial third downs late in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, New England Patriots, Tom Brady, Denver Broncos

Five Things to Watch for with the 2009 Denver Broncos

  Originally published September 2, 2009
Do you smell it? That scent of uncontainable hope that springs eternal amongst all 32 NFL teams as the preseason draws to a close? Yet, within about four weeks, a fair amount of those teams will have those hopes of glory dashed as first quarter of the regular season draws to a close.
Will the Denver Broncos be one of them?
If you took a poll of sports writers around the country, the resounding consensus would be a definite 'yes.' Offseason drama aside, their number one draft pick just returned to practice after missing significant time due to injury, their starting quarterback dislocated a knuckle, and theri second string quarterback is still nursing an ankle injury.
However, not much is known about this Broncos team. Thanks to a new head coach, new starting quarterback, and a new defensive scheme, this version of the Broncos could be the hardest to gauge in the franchise's history. Here are a few things to look for as 2009 formally gets ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Josh McDaniels, Kyle Orton

Congrats, Jay Cutler: You've Just Joined Some Bad Company

Jay Cutler's now infamous 5 interceptions has placed him in a unique class of Quarterbacks who've thrown 5 interceptions.

Among active quarterbacks in the NFL, only 12 QB's have thrown 5 interceptions in a game within the past 10 years.

Of course there's the Ty Detmer's who threw 7 interceptions but he is no longer active.

I thought the trade for Cutler was bad when it happened and I just keep getting confirmation that I was right.

It must be driving Bears fans crazy that they thought they were getting a savior only to watch Kyle Orton filling that role for the Broncos. Now Jay Cutler's tied with Jake Delhomme for the most interceptions thrown within the past few years.
