Risk of Signing Larry Johnson Pays off For Bengals in Win over Browns

The Cincinnati Bengals received some criticism for the signing of running back Larry Johnson after his release from the Kansas City Chiefs a few weeks ago. After Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals appear to have made the right move. With an improved offensive line, Johnson showed the Bengals why signing him for insurance he was worth the risk after his 107-yard rushing performance against the Browns in Cincinnati's 16-17 win over Cleveland. Johnson was signed by the Bengals as insurance in case running back Cedric Benson's hip injury would keep him out longer than expected. With another player on the roster with a history at being the No. 1 running back, head coach Marvin Lewis felt better about resting Benson for the second-straight week against the Browns. So Dwayne Bowe has been suspended by the NFL for four games for substance abuse. Just what this team needs, another setback. To say that Bowe made a mistake is putting it mildly. How can a guy who is the strongest WR in the NFL feel he needed anything to add strength and in doing so, somehow, improve his performance? The issue here is it really doesn't matter what the substance is, just that it was enough to be suspended. What the future holds in store we can only guess. One would hope that Bowe will remain a Chief for years to come. One also may notice how important he is to this team's future. One week after his release, former Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. He visited with the team on Monday and signed a deal worth $434,335 on Tuesday. Johnson was released from the Chiefs after another run-in of trouble. This time, he recorded gay slurs and questioned head coach Todd Haley's ability to lead the team on his Twitter account. He was eventually suspended for two weeks before his release.
