At the bye: High marks for the defense

With the Redskins regrouping during the bye week, we think it's a good time for the blog to take stock of the team's performance. Today, Rick Maese takes a look at the team's defense through seven games. Thursday: Jason Reid looks at the offense. And Friday, Barry Svrluga talks special teams. Not surprisingly, most of the team's bright spots can be found on the defensive side of the ball. But even this unit has fallen short of preseason expectations. Statistically, the Redskins' defense looks pretty sound. It boasts the NFL's leading tackler in London Fletcher (more on him in a bit) and is holding opponents to 283.4 yards per game (No. 5 in the NFL) and 17.6 points (No. 6).

Westbrook's injury causes concern

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, a Washington native who attended DeMatha, suffered a concussion in the first quarter of Monday's game and caused a brief scare at FedEx Field when he remained on the turf for a few minutes without visible movement of his extremities. The injury occurred when Westbrook's helmet collided with Redskins linebacker London Fletcher's knee. "I turned around and saw that he wasn't moving, and initially, I thought he was just knocked out or whatever," Fletcher said. "But as it went on, I didn't see his legs moving. I did get very concerned for his well being. You don't want to anyone to be seriously injured on the football field. So I did get a little concerned for him, and I was just praying that he would move his lower extremities. Once he did, I was very happy about it."

Westbrook has concussion; Griffin hurt (updated)

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook suffered a concussion in the first quarter of Monday's game and caused a brief scare at FedEx Field when he remained on the turf for a few minutes without visible movement of his extremities. He was not expected to return to the game. The injury occurred when Westbrook's helmet collided with Redskins linebacker London Fletcher's knee. Redskins cornerback Byron Westbrook, Brian's brother, came onto the field while Brian was being attended by the Eagles' training staff. Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb consoled Byron and Eagles Coach Andy Reid motioned for him to stay on the field. Byron was by Brian's side when Brian stood, minutes after the collision, and received applause from the FedEx Field crowd. Fletcher spoke to Brian Westbrook, too. Westbrook walked off the field on his power. The Pro Bowl running back is a Washington native who attended DeMatha Catholic. ()()() Cornelius

Clueless Wa$hington Red$kins Continue Annual Failure To No Ones Surprise

So the Washington Redskins, in the midst of yet another annual downfall filled with a hundred million dollars of disappointments, finally switched their offensive coordinator after last week's latest loss to a winless team.
Wow. Like that will make a difference. This is the same franchise that thought it would be wise to give offensive coordinator and aspiring head coach, Al Saunders a whopping $2 million salary that was on par with that of their coach at the time. Funny how that didn't work out. Simultaneously they gave then defensive coordinator Gregg Williams a similar salary and continue to wonder why that didn't work out.
Now after rewarding their third winless franchise with their first victory of the season, an NFL record by the way, last week they decide to only remove the playcalling duties from the overmatched Jim Zorn and give it to a guy, Sherman Lewis, who has failed in just about every other job he's held in the NFL.
Brilliant. I wonder how that's going to turn out. We'll get a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, Jim Zorn, Jason Campbell, London Fletcher, Phillip Daniels
