Mike Holmgren is One Step Closer to the Cleveland Browns

Former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren is one step closer to coming to the Cleveland Browns. After the Buffalo Bills spent seven hours courting and persuading former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan to become their next head coach and possible head of football operations, they made another call. The Bills also called Holmgren to come in and interview, but according to Sirius NFL Radio he declined and said he wasn't interested. Is Holmgren becoming enamoured with thought of rebuilding the Browns? Or is he just keeping his options open? Or does he just not want anything to do with Bills owner Ralph Wilson? It may be a combination of everything above, but one thing is more certain now and that is there is one less team out there who Holmgren won't be working for. Browns fans can now get a little more excited, because the odds of landing a football czar like Holmgren have just increased. This maybe a little too optimistic of a look at this situation, but ...

A person familiar with the Buffalo Bills coaching search says two-time Super Bowl-winner Mike Shanahan is considered a legitimate candidate to take over the job. The Bills have contacted Shanahan, the person familiar with the search told The Associated Press on Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the team is not commenting during its search process. Shanahan has been out of football after being fired by the Broncos at the end of last season.

Buffalo Bills Reportedly Interested in Mike Shanahan

After firing head coach Dick Jauron earlier this week and naming Ryan Fitzpatrick the new starting quarterback, as well as naming Perry Fewell the interim coach, the Buffalo Bills are now reportedly pursuing former Denver Broncos head coach, Mike Shanahan . At least they've got the right idea . When you fail to crack .500 football for the fourth straight year under the same coach, it's inevitable to want to change the tires of the system, and like most NFL team overhauls, that change usually starts with the coaching. NFL.com's Vic Carucci is reporting that the Bills will meet with Shanahan sometime next week, and that the two-time Super Bowl champion is their "number one" head coaching target. The Bills have been said to be willing to pay Shanahan any amount of money, while it appears they would also be willing to relinquish any and all power and decision making to Shanahan upon hiring him. Ralph Wilson recently received his ring from the Hall of Fame for his induction there prior to the start of the 2009 season. That induction was a fitting start for the only owner in Bills history, especially since this was the 50th anniversary season of the Buffalo Bills organization. When the ring was presented, Ralph was greeted with a loud chorus of boos from the home crowd. Long forgotten was the four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1990 - 1993. It was more like, what have you done for us lately Ralph? Wilson bit the bullet earlier this week by dropping the ax on Dick Jauron and swallowing the remaining year and a half left on Dick Jauron's pro-rated six million dollar contract. Throwing that much money away is not something Ralph is very fond of doing. Heck, who would be? You know he hated to do it, but he was faced with such a growing level of discontentment from the fan base that he had to do something. I just wonder if his doctor advised him to make the move for health reasons? ...

Here in Washington D.C., local radio news station WTOP is reporting that the Buffalo Bills are interviewing Mike Shanahan to coach the Bills. The report did not say whether, if accepted, Shanahan would finish the season up in Buffalo or would take over at the end of the season. I think if he did take the job he would start at the conclusion of the season. I also think since the Bills do not have a General Manager, Shanahan would be negotiating for that position as well.
