Saints Midseason Report Card: Grading New Orleans and Its 8-0 Start

The New Orleans Saints are 8-0.
There's one sentence no one was ever able to say or print until Sunday afternoon.
For the first time in their 43-year history, the New Orleans Saints have run the table on the first half of their schedule.
They've won games in nearly every way imaginable.
The Saints threw six touchdowns in one game and scored seven touchdowns in another. They've scored off fumbles and interceptions. They've been up 20 and down 20.
New Orleans has won by passing for over 350 yards in one game and rushing for over 200 the next.
They have found a way to win no matter what happened over the course of the game.
With a three-game lead in the division over the Falcons, the race for the NFC South title is all but over. Even if the Saints were to stumble to 4-4 over the second half of the season, Atlanta would have to go 7-1 just to tie.
This edition of the report card will have two grades for each section—a second quarter grade and a midterm grade. The midterm is an average of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints

NFL Power Rankings Week 10: No One Does It Better than the Saints

Two close games, same old ending. The league's two undefeated teams, the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, both survived late-game deficits to reach their 8-0 record and remain unbeaten.
For the rest of the teams and where they rank, read on:

  1. New Orleans Saints (8-0) Make that three straight games the Saints did everything they could to give the game away. Regardless, there's little doubt that this team's resilience makes it the best team in football .

  2. Indianapolis Colts (8-0) They're getting closer and closer to their first loss, and with season-ending injuries to Bob Sanders and Marlin Jackson, they're going to have to play better to keep the streak alive.

  3. Minnesota Vikings (7-1) The Vikings get a double-week bye, as they stay at home to face the 1-7 Detroit Lions. Sure, nothing is literally a "gimme," but this is pretty darn close.

  4. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) They absolutely dominated the Broncos, and showed once again ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints

Panthers lose LB Davis for season with torn ACL

The Carolina Panthers lost perhaps their most productive defensive player Monday when tests showed weakside linebacker Thomas Davis has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Davis' season-ending injury came without getting hit in Sunday's loss to New Orleans. He was backpedaling when his knee buckled and he crumpled to the turf as Drew Brees threw a 17-yard pass to Pierre Thomas in the fourth quarter.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Carolina Panthers, Thomas Davis, New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees, Pierre Thomas

What might be finest Saints team is off to the best start in club history. New Orleans moved to 8-0 on Sunday when Drew Brees overcame two early turnovers to pass for 330 yards and a touchdown in a 30-20 comeback victory over Carolina. While the Saints' defense did not intercept a pass for the first time all season, the unit forced three turnovers on fumbles.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Drew Brees

Black and Gold Xs and Os: The Saints' Offensive Gameplan vs. the Panthers

This week against the Carolina Panthers' defense, the New Orleans Saints face a formidable challenge. It is the first team they have seen this year that plays a base Cover-2 defense.
In the past, the Saints have not done as well against this style of defense. Of course, over that same stretch they tore apart man-to-man defenses. This season they've found some difficulty against man-to-man defenses, but tore apart zone coverages.
So what should we expect in Week Nine (Game Eight)?
Expect Carolina to mix up its coverages, trying to give Drew Brees different looks than what he sees on film. Carolina's other most common coverage is Cover-3.
The corners play the Cover-2 soft, meaning they trail the outside receivers on their routes but stay focused on what is happening behind them in order to get back to the route thrown into the flat.
There are many options of ways to attack this base Cover-2. You can send two or three receivers to one side and flood that side. You can run receivers at the two ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers

Panthers-Saints: Will New Orleans Set Franchise A Mark With 8-0 Start?

The last time the New Orleans Saints were 7-0 Michael Jordan won his first title, we found out what "going postal" meant, the country became aware of a man in Los Angeles named Rodney King, and the Soviet Union collapsed.
In Louisiana, former KKK leader David Duke lost the governor's election to future convicted felon Edwin Edwards.
Yes, it's been a while since the Saints have experienced this kind of success.
An 8-0 start would be a "first ever" for the black and gold.
In order to achieve midseason perfection, the Saints must beat the Carolina Panthers —a team, despite its 3-4 record, that will prove to be a tough test.
Carolina and head coach John Fox have owned New Orleans. The Panthers have won six of the past seven meetings against the Saints, and Fox sports a 5-1 record in head to head meetings against Sean Payton.
The Panthers used a strong running game and a tough defense to jump out to big leads and sweep the Saints last year.
This year the Panthers will look to use the same ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers

Head-to-head: Colts are NFL's better undefeated team

Super Bowl winner; MVP: Peyton Manning is the No. 1 reason to believe in the Colts.

We enter NFL Week 9 with two unbeaten teams -- the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints . This week, both teams are at home for division games; the Colts play host to the Texans , and the Panthers visit New Orleans . In preparation for the games, we posed the question the SN experts Clifton Brown and Vinnie Iyer: Which is the better team?

Brown touts the Colts . Here's why Iyer's pick is the Saints:

With all due respect to the dominant team in the NFC, the Saints, the Colts are the remaining undefeated to trust most down the stretch and come playoff time. One word comes to mind: experience.

Peyton Manning has seen everything and is playing some of the best football of his illustrious career. The talented offense, buoyed by an injection of youth, is smooth and methodical in how it moves the ball every week.

On defense, they have the familiar ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl

Head-to-head: Saints are NFL's better undefeated team

Talk about punch: Drew Brees leads the NFL's top-scoring, most-balanced offense.

Iyer touts the Colts. Here's why Brown's pick is the Saints:

The margin between the Colts and Saints is slim. Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are both great quarterbacks. Both teams have showed they can win, even when not playing their best.

But I pick the Saints for two reasons: They have better offensive balance, and they are better at stopping the run.

Colts & Saints are last of the unbeatens

The Colts and the Saints are the last of the NFL unbeatens and remain one-two in Gary Myers' weekly NFL power rankings. The big news out of Indy last Sunday was Joseph Addai - not Peyton Manning - had the Colts' lone TD pass. In the Big Easy, it's clear sailing to 10-0 for the Saints.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Joseph Addai, Peyton Manning

New Orleans Saints' Recent Sins May Ruin Bid at Perfection

This season has been a dream season of sorts for the New Orleans Saints, the city, and its fans.
The offensive explosion.
The reinvention of the defense that averages three turnovers per game.
The huge comeback win against the Miami Dolphins.
The ensuing late-night reception consisting of thousands at the airport.
The 7-0 record.
The Saints have beaten the Eagles, Jets, Giants, Dolphins, and Falcons each by an average of 16.2 points.
All of this, combined with the easiest remaining schedule in the league, has people locally and nationally whispering about the possibility of perfection.
But if the Saints don't reverse a few recent trends, then New Orleans may see its unblemished record become scarred this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

  1) The rushing defense must improve.
The Saints have really struggled to stop the run over the same four-game stretch. While they rank 11th in rushing defense, that stat may be a little deceiving.
In three of the past four games, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees, Carolina Panthers

Week Eight Review-Falcons Find It Tough In The Big Easy

Anyone that watched this game Monday night must admit it was exciting until the end. Both teams came in and played a physical, hard fought game.
The Falcons struck first on the opening possession culminating with a Michael Turner 13 yard touchdown scamper. Turner showed surprising speed to get to the edge for the score.
The Falcons kicked off to the Saints and five and a half minutes later, running back Pierre Thomas scampered in the end zone from 22 yards out. Game tied, the shootout began.
The next Falcons possession they stalled and ended up punting. They downed the ball inside the Saints ten yard line. Two plays later, Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud came in on a delayed blitz rocking Brees and forcing a fumble. The ball was recovered in the end zone by defensive end Kroy Biermann. For the second time in the first quarter, the Falcons took the lead.
The Saints got the ball back and methodically drove downfield, ending their series with an 18 yard touchdown to Marques Colston. The game was ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints

NFL Mid-Season Report

With eight weeks gone in the NFL, most teams are approaching the turning points in their seasons. This NFL season has witnessed unbeaten teams, back and forth games, disappointments, and controversies. Here is a mid-season report through Week 8.
Mid-season MVP: Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings
Peterson is third in the league in rushing with 163 attempts and 784 yards. He averages almost five yards per carry and has nine touchdowns.
Mid-season Rookie of the Year: Brian Cushing, LB, Houston Texans
Cushing has 66 tackles (36 solo), one-and-a-half sacks, one safety, nine passes defensed, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.
Mid-season Coach of the Year: Josh McDaniels, Denver Broncos
The Broncos faced controversy this off-season when trading Jay Cutler for Kyle Orton. The fans were holding their breath after an abysmal pre-season. This proves that pre-season means nothing, as McDaniels has him team off to a 6-1 start.
Winners: Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans
