Saints Wide Receiver Battle Is Heating Up

It seems as if Devery Henderson is not going to give up so easily. Early training camp reports had Robert Meachem as the guy to watch, and possibly have a chance at taking the number two wide out spot, and after a great first pre season game, those reports seemed to be right on track. As of this last week, Henderson has been taking the bulk of snaps with the first team along with Colston, and Coach Payton stated Henderson is fighting for playing time, while the others Moore, and Meachem are fighting for snaps. He also said that Meachem has improved, but still has a ways to go, noting that its his efficiency level that is still in question. Wow, talk about a let down, I cannot believe that with all the work Meachem put in this off season, and the performance he gave in the first game that he would have slid down in the depth chart. Has Henderson, even after battling with a hamstring injury earlier in camp, improved that much? You can bet the last two games are going to be important to those ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem

New Orleans Saints Have Questions That Need Answers

The Saints third preseason game is this Saturday, against the Cincinnati Bengals. This should be a good test for the Saints, since Carson Palmer is one of the top QBs in the NFL today.
The Bengals will, however, be without Chad Johnson, and Houshmandzadeh may be limited as well. This is good and bad for the Saints' secondary. Johnson and Houshmandzadeh are two of the best in the game today; they could have provided a great benchmark for the Saints' coaches to gauge the improvement of the secondary.
On the other hand with Johnson out, and Houshmandzadeh limited, if the secondary performs poorly against the second-team receivers, that will not be good for players, coaches, and fans alike.
Somebody needs to step up and show that they want the starting job. It's a stretch, but Porter just might be that guy, even though he is a rookie and has missed practice time due to injury.
Going into Saturday's game, the secondary is not the only issue to worry about. The linebacking corps ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints

An Open Letter to the New Orleans Saints' Defense

Dear Defense,
Where did you go?
We used to have to "the Dome Patrol," but now it's like you think that the opposing quarterback isn't going to throw to a receiver that has 10 steps on you. All you ever do is watch other players' backs and chase them as they run for the end zone. Sometimes you catch them, and sometimes you don't.
You got your boy Vilma, and he is helping you play better, and he better be, considering that he is wearing Sam Mills' number, but what happened to you?
You went from bad, to worse, to horrible. You let tight ends beat you for touchdowns; even old Tom Benson could probably catch a touchdown on you and your defensive backs. What's up with that?
It seems like you need help, really, really, really bad. You're so bad that some seem to think that you are the third-string defense, but no, you are the first string. Sometimes the third stringers play better.
It's time to stop letting the offense do all of the work; you're not getting paid to watch Kevin Walter run past ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints Fans Are Just Expressing Years of Frustration

Drew Brees is a leader both on and off the field. Last year, he was the first to come to Jason David’s defense when fans showed their disapproval over his play.
Like a true leader, Drew Brees told us we should encourage, not boo, him or other players because of their play. After Saturday’s poor defensive display and singled-out attacks by fans against Jason David, Drew Brees made a similar statement.
"C'mon people," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. "We haven't even started playing games that count yet. It's extremely unfair. We're talking about the first quarter of our first preseason game at home. The bottom line is we all need to improve—offense, defense, and special teams. We shouldn't be hearing boos, especially at this time. We should be hearing encouragement."
How can I put this politely? Most fans do not make millions of dollars, but each year, we put our hearts and souls into a team that has been the most turbulent in NFL history.
To a true fan, every game ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees

New Orleans Saints’ One Team Two Separate Personalities

The Saints have always had one problem. They can never have a good balance between their offense and defense.
In the early 90's, we had the famed "Dome Patrol" under Jim Mora. Those guys struck fear into every offense they played against. The problem was, they did not have an offense that could score. This lead to sup par seasons, and the occasional playoff berth.
Present day, the New Orleans Saints have had one of the top ranked offenses in the league the last two years, but coupled with a defense that at most times seems non existent. Has taken them from Super Bowl contenders to just another good football team.
I am sure every offensive coordinator that will face the Saints this year has already made their game plan and submitted it. Pass, Pass, and Pass or something close to it.
On the other hand any defensive coordinator that will face them this year, will probally not get much sleep, and only hope they make a good showing. The top question on their minds will be who do you focus on ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl

Attention Saints Front Office: The Jason David Experience Is Still A Failure

It had been eight months since the city of New Orleans last stepped foot into the Louisiana Superdome to watch a live Saints game. The off-season was spent revamping the defensive side of the ball, which was the Saints’ weak point throughout the 2007 season. The bringing in of free agents and some new coaches to the staff gave fans assurance that the defensive team would be better than it has been in previous years.

Unfortunately, it has been painfully clear that the secondary is still the main problem for the team. But one player stands above the rest for his continued lack of play: Cornerback Jason David. All of last season, David was beat down field and looked lost in coverage. But fans were promised that he was just having trouble with the system, having come over from the Indianapolis Colts’ Cover-2 scheme to the Man Coverage the Saints implement.

Time and time again, David looked confused and ill prepared for whomever the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Jason David

An Open Letter to Saints' Coach, Sean Payton

Dear Coach Payton,
The only highlight Jason David has provided the Saints with came in the 2007 season opener against the Indianoplis Colts. I'm sure you remember when he returned a fumble for a touchdown, as it's the only good thing he's done since becoming a Saint.
This restricted free agent pick up has got to be the worse acquisition in the last decade. I beg you to to do something about it quickly, or the New Orleans Saints fans will not be happy for much longer.
Last year, week after week, we watched wide receivers score at will on the right side of the field. Jason David was made to look as if he had never played a game of football in his life.
Your staff, however, stayed with him, allowing David an opportunity to redeem himself.
Granted we cannot blame every defensive problem on Jason David, but we can say with confidence that he has done nothing to remedy these problems. It is absolutely fair to put most of the blame on him, as so many touchdowns came on plays which he failed ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton, Jason David

  UPDATED 2008 NFL POWER RANKINGS

6) Pittsburgh Steelers - Good offense, great defense
7) New Orleans Saints - Good team got better with offseason moves
8) New York Jets - Great offseason. Filled holes, especially the biggest, QB
9) Cleveland Browns - Breakout year for the Browns. Good offseason moves
10) Seattle Seahawks - NFC West makes everyone better. Solid QB, good defense
11) Jacksonville Jaguars - Jones-Drew and company should have another good year
12) Minnesota Vikings - Probably NFL's best defense. Only lacking good QB
13) Tennessee Titans - Jeff Fischer always has a good team

Deuce McAllister made a promising return from his second knee reconstruction in three seasons, but the Saints running back's brief appearance wasn't enough to keep the Houston Texans from staying perfect in the preseason. Matt Schaub was 14-of-16 passing for 187 yards and two touchdowns, helping Houston (2-0) take a 31-27 victory over New Orleans (1-1) on Saturday night.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Deuce McAllister, Houston Texans, Matt Schaub

Hollis “The Tank” Thomas Out for Two Months, All Eyes Move to Sedrick Ellis

With Thomas out for at least two months, the Saints will be looking to their 2008 first-round pick Sedrick Ellis to have even a bigger impact than what was originally expected.

Thomas was to be used more in run situations, with Ellis coming in on passing downs. Now that Thomas is out, the pressure will be on Ellis to have an impact in both areas and will surely see more playing time.

The loss of Thomas is a big one. Scott Fujita has thrived as the Saints' leading tackler, with help from Thomas. Fujita has had the luxury of roaming free, due in part to the fact that Thomas does a great job of keeping those big offensive tackles and guards off of him.

Now, Ellis will have to earn the veterans' trust and show everyone he is up to the challenge. The defensive line has taken a beating in training camp so far, with Brian Young and Antwan Lake suffering from knee injuries and have been limited in practice. Ellis himself has had some soreness in his right ankle and also has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Sedrick Ellis

Offensive guard Jahri Evans joined the Saints as a fourth-round draft pick out of Division II Bloomsburg and impressively won a starting job by opening day of his rookie season.

Now in his third year as a pro, he could afford to laugh off a scuffle with Texans defensive end Earl Chochran during a joint practice with Houston on Thursday.

"That's what y'all were waiting for," Evans said. "We gave y'all a show out there.

The New Orleans Saints will be minus veteran defensive tackle Hollis Thomas for at least two months. He underwent surgery today for a torn triceps suffered Wednesday during a pass-rushing drill. The injury could end up being season-ending for Thomas. Kendrick Clancy likely will take over as nose tackle for Thomas, although the Saints also could consider moving prized rookie Sedrick Ellis to the position.

Defensive tackle Hollis Thomas, a starter for the New Orleans Saints for much of the past two seasons, has a right triceps injury that will sideline him about two months.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Thomas injured himself during drills in a practice Wednesday with the Houston Texans and then had surgery Thursday morning.

With Thomas out, Sedrick Ellis, the Saints' first-round draft pick from Southern Cal, is expected to see more playing time.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Hollis Thomas, Sean Payton, Houston Texans, Sedrick Ellis

What Is the NFL's Best Moment Ever?

You may think that the kick return by Cal against Stanford is the best football moment ever, or it may be the Immaculate Reception, but in my opinion, the best football moment ever was when the New Orleans Saints' Steve Gleason blocked an attempted punt by Michael Koenen, 90 seconds into the first game in the Louisiana Superdome since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.
The story is well-documented. On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the southern coast of the United States, with New Orleans right in its crosshairs.
That day served as the beginning of what continues to be a tumultuous time for the city. As Katrina approached, the Louisiana Superdome became a shelter for those to ride out the storm. After the storm, it became a symbol of the city's plight.
But nearly 13 months to the day after Katrina, on Sept. 25, 2006, the Superdome reopened and welcomed back its primary tenant, the Saints, a team that was displaced to San Antonio by the effects of Katrina during the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Superdome, Steve Gleason

Ten NFL Predictions You Can Take to the Bank

Counting down the 10 predictions you need to know heading into the 2008 NFL Season.

  10. The Green Bay Packers will win the NFC North with a 10-6 record,
Sure, their Hall of Fame quarterback is gone and the Packers have zero NFL starts combined between their three quarterbacks. But don’t forget that Green Bay has one of the youngest and best defenses in the league along with young studs at the skill positions (Ryan Grant at RB and Greg Jennings at WR).

With five games against the Lions, Bears, and Falcons, the Packers will be halfway to a 10-win season and division title before you know it.

  9. The New York Giants will finish last in the NFC East.
Every team in the NFC East got better except the defending Super Bowl Champs. Don’t harp too long on their late season run from last year, as thrilling as it was. The only threat on offense is Plaxico Burress.

Besides, the recent trend ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints

NFC South: Predictions After A Preview

    What have we learned?
Well first off, the NFC South is still up for grabs despite the New Orleans hype. But who will ultimately emerge as NFC South Champion? Lets see.
        Atlanta
They may have found themselves a starting QB in Matt Ryan, which is what I suspected. Ryan's playing style resembles a prototypical NFL quarterback in that he's shown to be a presence in the pocket. His poise and decision-making at BC have proven him ready for NFL play and it showed in the Falcons' preseason matchup with Jacksonville. Chris Redman and Joey Harrington didn't see much playing time and Shockley didn't do a good job at all going 4 for 15 with an INT.
Norwood, Turner, and Snelling shared most of the reps at tailback, with Brown getting a few handoffs. The running game looks decent at best for this year's Falcons team, with Norwood and Turner taking ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers

Where The Saints Look To Improve In Their Next Preseason Game

The New Orleans Saints showed that there is no question in how great their offense still is, and will become, in 2008. Even without Deuce, Shockey, and Colston playing last week, the Saints marched down the field for 80 yards and a touchdown on their opening drive.

The defense held their own, but still showed they are in need of improvement if they want to make a Super Bowl run this year. Vilma and McKenzie were missing last week, and it may be later in the month before they get onto the field. Even with the two high profile players out, the Saints defense will have to improve on unit cohesion, in the coming weeks.

A few things to look for when the Saints host the Texans this weekend will be if Meachem can duplicate his four catch, 129 yard, one TD game against the Cardinals. If he can, teams are going to be in trouble if they have to prepare for Colston, Shockey, Bush, Meachem and McAllister being on the field at the same time.

The battle is wide open still for the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints

Reggie Bush Signs New Deal with the Saints

According to Scout.com, Reggie Bush and the New Orleans Saints have restructured his initial contract. Reggie's new contract will give him "achievable" incentives for the next several seasons. Bush’s agent, Joel Segal, confirmed that the Saints restructured the tailback’s contract this offseason, but it was more of a bookkeeping issue than anything else. Here are the highlights of the contract:
The team included a $4 million signing bonus as part of the new deal, which runs through 2011, and a $4.5 million roster bonus for the 2009 season.
Bush had four years remaining on his original deal with $10.25 million in salary and $10 million in prorated bonus money scheduled spread out through 2011. But he also had $20 million dollars of “Not Likely to Be Earned” bonuses at a rate of $5 million per year that didn’t count against the Saints ’ cap unless he reached those incentives.
Under his new deal, which also runs through 2011, Bush ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Reggie Bush

Cooper Manning: "I'd have four rings by now"

Cooper Manning, the older brother of Peyton (above, right) and Eli Manning (above, left), made a rare public statement recently.
“I’d have four Super Bowl rings by now,” Cooper Manning said. “Maybe five. I mean, how hard can it be to win the Super Bowl?”
Cooper Manning was a standout high school receiver in New Orleans, only to have his career derailed by a spinal condition. Still, many believe he had more natural football talent than either of his brothers, who were both selected first overall.
“Man, the Super Bowls would have been fun to play in,” Cooper said. “I was drawing out some plays the other day on some napkins—some reverses and flea flickers and stuff. There is nothing that could stop me from being Super Bowl MVP. The Super Bowl is easy.”
Cooper’s self-assuredness has led him to become very frustrated with both of his brothers. When he became hurt, Cooper says he was counting on being able to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl, Eli Manning, New Orleans Saints, Peyton Manning

Saints rookie Adrian Arrington missed his second straight practice with a sprained toe Sunday and coach Sean Payton said the injury may be serious enough to sideline the former Michigan wide receiver for more than a week.
Saints Hope To Make A Super Bowl Run This Season

Going into the 2006-07 season, the New Orleans Saints should’ve used a question mark as their logo instead of the fleur-de-lis. Would Sean Payton be able to lead the team to victory? Would the Superdome be ready? Would Drew Brees’ be the same after having surgery? Would the team stay in New Orleans? These were the questions facing the Saints as they headed for training camp at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.
Everything turned out all right and the Saints capped off the amazing season by getting to the NFC Championship Game, where no other Saints team had ever been. Although the Saints fell short, losing the game to the Chicago Bears, they were determined to bring hope to a rebuilding city by winning the Super Bowl.
Two years later, the Saints are still chasing that dream. After a disappointing 7-9 season last year, the Black and Gold want to get back on track. This year, they want to take the NFC South and preferably the entire NFC, by storm.
After their defensive backs ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl

Shockey's agent calls new Saint a hero

Jeremy Shockey: Hero.

Really, I can’t think of any better introduction to this blog entry than that. Here’s a video of uber-agent Drew Rosenhaus, talking about how “ecstatic” Jeremy Shockey is to be a member of the New Orleans Saints. This is my favorite quote of the two-minute monolouge:

“We all know that Jeremy got a bad rap by the New York media, especially at the end of last season,” Rosenhaus says. “It is refreshing for Jeremy to go there and have a clean slate with the media, which has been exciting and positive and looks at Jeremy as another hero that can help uplift an area that has seen a lot of adversity, in New Orleans.”

Enjoy!

Washington Redskins' Five Preseason Games Are a Blessing in Disguise

For as long as I can remember, I have hated the preseason.
Sure, it’s nice to see football in August after the dreadful June and July months of summer. But the excitement wears off by the second quarter of the first game and morphs into sheer terror.
After every play, I scan the field feverishly, looking to make sure everyone wearing burgundy and gold got up without the assistance of players and trainers. At halftime, I check to make sure that all players walked off the field as opposed to being carted off.
The terror of losing a key player in exhibition games is not worth watching football a few weeks before September.
I'll watch America's Got Talent or Everybody Loves Raymond reruns for a few more weeks, I don't care. I made it this far through summer; I can put up with another two or three weeks.
That being said, this year is different. One would think that I’d be even more furious since the 'Skins have five preseason games as opposed to four (thanks to the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints
