Running back Reggie Bush and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis are not traveling with the New Orleans Saints for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. A team spokesman said Saturday that both players had been downgraded on the official injury report from questionable to out with knee injuries.

The death of the mother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been ruled a suicide. Mina Brees, an attorney from Austin, Texas, died Aug. 7 while visiting Colorado. This week, Grand County coroner Brenda Bock concluded that she died of a prescription drug overdose and ruled the death a suicide. Bock said Brees died while staying at the home of a friend in Granby near Rocky Mountain National Park.

Bush came out of the St. Louis game with swelling and soreness in his left knee, which was surgically repaired twice in a three-month span a year ago. Saints coach Sean Payton says Bush's knee is bruised and swollen. He says that happens with a knee that has had surgery.

The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran cornerback Chris McAlister. The 32-year-old former Ravens star has been elected to the Pro Bowl three times in his 10-year career but missed most of last season with a right knee injury and was released by Baltimore last February. McAlister started for Baltimore's Super Bowl winner in 2001 and ranked third on the Ravens' career list with 26 interceptions when he was released.

The may have 9-0 next to their name in the standings, but the New Orleans Saints didn't look like a 9-0 team Sunday. They struggled to put away to put away the 1-8 St. Louis Rams in a 28-23 road victory. Drew Brees threw two more interceptions, his sixth and seventh in the past four games, and Marques Colston lost a fumble at the goal line. The voids left by absences of Jabari Greer and Darren Sharper, both inactive, and Tracy Porter, who left the game with a knee injury, were felt strongly. Rams' quarterback Mark Bulger, drafted by New Orleans in the sixth round in 2000, passed for nearly 300 yards and tossed two touchdowns to Donnie Avery. Both touchdown passes were defended by nickel corner Randall Gay. Luckily, Reggie Bush and Courtney Roby were there to save the day. Bush had two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, and had another run for a career-long 55 yards.
