Tom Coughlin didn't need to say anything to his battered team this week. He didn't need to challenge his leaders or declare this "a one-game season." They already knew how dire the situation is heading into their game against the San Diego Chargers Sunday afternoon.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Diego Chargers, Tom Coughlin, New York Giants

Brown sent down to second team

After three straight awful performances by the Giants' defense, something had to change. And safety C.C. Brown knew what that change was going to be.
Giants shake up secondary in bid to end skid

Riding a three-game losing streak, the New York Giants decided Friday to insert Aaron Rouse into the starting lineup at safety for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers.

Rouse will replace beleaguered veteran C.C. Brown, who has been beaten twice on deep passes for touchdowns during the losing streak.

Brown missed a defensive audible in last Sunday's 40-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, allowing DeSean Jackson to score on a 54-yard pass play late in the first half.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Aaron Rouse, San Diego Chargers, C.C.
For the Giants, the bye can't come soon enough

THE GAME: San Diego Chargers (4-3) at Giants (5-3), CBS, 4:15 p.m.

WHAT IT MEANS: Now that the Yankees are no longer distracting the New York area, the focus turns to what a mess the football teams have become. This may not literally be a “one-game season” as Tom Coughlin said this week, but the last thing the Giants want is two weeks to hear about, think about, and talk about a four-game losing streak. Their psyche already seems pretty battered. This is a huge game for their state of mind, which is at a critical level heading towards their much-needed bye.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: RBs LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles vs. the middle of the Giants defense. That includes DTs Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty and MLB Antonio Pierce. Together they formed an enormous black hole against the Eagles. I’m still stunned with the way they were just blown off the ball on the third play of last Sunday’s game when Leonard Weaver - - Have I mentioned ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers

Philadelphia Eagles Should Keep Using Leonard Weaver in the Running Game

In last weekend’s 40-17 win against the New York Giants, one of the reasons the Philadelphia Eagles were able to find success was because of an effective running game.
The Eagles recorded their highest rushing total of the season against the Giants, with 180 yards on the ground. The main reason they were able to find such success was because of the contributions they got from everyone, considering running back Brian Westbrook was out due to a concussion he received a week earlier against the Washington Redskins.
Eagles rookie running back LeSean McCoy ran for 82 yards on 11 carries, including a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. However, it was the performance by fullback Leonard Weaver that made head coach Andy Reid realize another option to use in the running game.
On the third play of the game for the Eagles, Weaver broke through the Giants defense and ran 41 yards for the first touchdown of the game. Overall, he finished with 75 yards on just eight carries–both career highs.

Chargers vs. Giants Preview: Draft Dodger

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional
Philip Rivers and Eli Manning will forever be linked by the 2004 NFL draft, in which Manning was selected first by the Chargers, then traded to the Giants for Rivers, whom the Giants selected fourth. The two young quarterbacks will meet in Giants Stadium on Sunday, with their respective teams heading in opposite directions—the Chargers have won two straight, while the G-Men have dropped their past three.
"Of course, everyone knows that Manning had publicly refused to play for the Chargers if they drafted him," Rivers said. "Well, you can stop the John Elway comparisons right there. Sure, they're both 'draft dodgers,' but until Eli can give an overrated coach two Super Bowl wins, he won't be mentioned in the same breath with Elway."
"Less than a month ago, the Giants were undefeated and topping the list of many power rankings. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. And we thought Plaxico Burress' fall from grace was quick. It seems the G-Men, like ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers, Eli Manning, Super Bowl, Plaxico Burress

Brown "had a feeling" change was coming

This was one play that C.C. Brown read perfectly.

The Giants’ much-maligned safety said he had a feeling Tom Coughlin was pondering a switch in the starting lineup. He knew it from the moment the Giants’ 40-17 loss in Philadelphia was over.

“I mean, I pretty much knew after the game there was going to be a switch somewhere,” he said. “In this business if you’re not on your ‘A game’ all the time things like this are going to happen. The only thing I can do is keep pushing forward and try to get better.”

Brown was clearly not thrilled with Coughlin’s decision to demote him to the second team in favor of Aaron Rouse. That hadn’t happened since early in his rookie season with Houston (2005) when he was demoted for two games. Other than that stretch he’s been a starter during his entire four-and-a-half year career.

And though he is seemingly being made a scapegoat for a defense that has many problems beyond one safety, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, C.C.
C.C. ya! Giants make safety switch

It looks like you won’t have C.C. Brown to kick around anymore.

Though Tom Coughlin has not announced anything official, it appears he has made a much-anticipated change in his defensive lineup. Brown, the much-maligned starting safety, was running with the second team during the portion of practice open to the media today. He was replaced on the first team by third-year pro Aaron Rouse.

That’s not a complete surprise, given how much Brown has struggled in coverage since taking over for the injured Kenny Phillips. He’s been at the center of most of the apparent communication problems on defense and has appeared to be the one responsible for many of the biggest passing plays the defense has surrendered.

Rouse hasn’t exactly been spectacular either since he was claimed off waivers (from Green Bay) on Sept. 24. But the Giants had to do something to stop the bleeding on defense. And since Rouse was the only reserve safety on the roster, this move was the only option the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, C.C.

If the Giants’ defense is having a communication problem, nobody has communicated that to the defensive coordinator.

Hard as that is to believe, that’s what I took out of a somewhat stunning exchange between the media and Giants defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan on Thursday, when he was asked about the obvious communication problem among his defensive players. And I say “obvious” not only because you can see the defensive backs talking/arguing with each other after far too many plays, but also because veteran players like Justin Tuck keep saying there’s an obvious communication problem.

What exactly do they mean by that? Sheridan, remarkably, said he doesn’t know.

“You have to ask them,” he said. “I don’t know what they are talking about. They haven’t come to me regarding that. I’m not trying to shut the question down but particularly I don’t know, you have to ask them. They could explain it to you, what they are ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants

New New York Giants Book Released: Making the Big Game

Enclosed is a message I received from a fellow Giant fan. This seemed like something fun to read about our Giants and the fans that dedicate themselves to their team.
"Hello, from Northern California- My name is Jeffrey Fekete and I am now connecting with Giants fans from around the U.S. following the publication of my book "Making The Big Game: Tales of an Accidental Spectator."
It's a part fan memoir and part unexpected road trip story (entirely true) that begins 10 days before kickoff of Super Bowl XLII and ends in the upper deck in Glendale AZ among life long Giants season ticket holders. My regional book tour in January that will make stops in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and just confirmed Miami, FL.
You can preview excerpts and find out more about it at www.MakingTheBigGame.com Read more NFL news on BleacherReport.com

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Super Bowl, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, Tom Coughlin, David Diehl

Bill Sheridan said he is encouraged by the fact that the unit's recent struggles can be fixed.
Coughlin reports no setbacks for Canty, Boley

Just got out of locker room. Coach Tom Coughlin, in what is becoming his usual brief Thursday meeting with reporters, said DL Chris Canty and LB Michael Boley are doing well and have suffered no setbacks so far.

“They probably did a little bit, maybe a little more,” Coughlin said of the two defensive players who are trying to come back from injuries. “They are basically 50%, but they are getting their reps and they are running. If they keep going, we will see how it is.”

* * *

RB Brandon Jacobs said that players are getting on each other in practice, trying to motivate one another when they see that one player might not be working as hard as they can be. Several Giants sounded pretty motivated this week.

* * *

Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan also said that he thinks all the mistakes the Giants defense has made in the past few weeks are correctable and that they are not problems that cannot be fixed due to a scheme thing or player personnel.

LB Michael Boley (knee), TE Kevin Boss (ankle), DT Chris Canty (calf), WR Mario Manningham (shoulder) and WR Sinorice Moss (foot) were all on the field for practice.

Solutions Coming For Slumping New York Giants After Bye Week

After looking like the best team in the entire league at the end of Week 5, the New York Giants have come down to earth...and then some.
New York is heading into Week 9 as losers of three straight, with far from a gimme game against the 4-3 San Diego Chargers at the Meadowlands Sunday.
On the surface, it looks like the Giants have benefited from a soft opening schedule and been exposed by high-caliber teams such as the Saints, Cardinals and Eagles.
The offense and defense have been equally out of sync the past three weeks and fans are searching for answers before officially pressing the panic button.
After stepping back and looking at the big picture of the Giants season, there are two huge reasons for fans to be optimistic as the Giants head into their bye after this week's contest.

 1. The Return of Injured Defensive Stars
The loss of Micheal Boley in the Giants' Week 4 contest at Kansas City has proved to be extremely costly.
Boley was brought in by GM Jerry Reese to add speed ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Super Bowl

The cavalry is coming; For real this time

Hard as it is to believe, the Giants’ defense could soon be at full strength.

OK, maybe not full strength, but they could soon be pretty close now that both DT Chris Canty (calf) and LB Michael Boley (knee) are back at practice. Canty said he practiced fully today and Boley said he took about half the snaps. And both players said they felt pretty good when the workout was done.

It sounds like Canty is the closest to making a return. He said he “felt really good out there” today and said there were no limitations on what he could do. Boley, though, cautioned that “I can’t sit here and say I’m 100 percent right now. Basically all I can do is take whatever my knee gives me.”

He also said he feels no urgency to return.

“It’s a real young season,” Boley said. “I’m not going to sit here and say that ‘Oh, I’m rushing to get back’ like it’s Week 15. That’s not the case.
Eagles' Westbrook expects to play vs. Cowboys

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook says he will be back on the field for Sunday's game against Dallas following a concussion that forced him to miss a game.

Westbrook returned to practice Wednesday. He says he is feeling no effects from the concussion that forced him to miss last week's 40-17 win over the New York Giants.

Westbrook was knocked unconscious when he was hit in the head by a knee a week earlier in a win over Washington.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Brian Westbrook, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Washington Redskins

Countdown to Super Bowl XLIII 1/2

There apparently is no way to overstate the importance of this week’s game.

With the Giants riding a three-game losing streak and facing a schedule that just doesn’t get any easier, Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce has declared this “the Super Bowl for the New York Giants”.. That’s how much the Giants need a win this Sunday when the San Diego Chargers come to town.

“If there’s a must-win game of the season for the New York Giants, it’s this week,” Pierce said on Monday, during his paid weekly spot on WFAN . “This is the biggest game of the year. People said the Saints game was the Super Bowl? No. This is the Super Bowl for the New York Giants team. Going into our bye week we do not want to be going in on a four-game losing streak.”

Of course, if they do lose, they’ll get to play another “Super Bowl” against the Atlanta Falcons right after the bye. And if they lose that … well, you get the idea.

Halfway to ... what, exactly?

Eight games into the season, there’s only one thing anyone can say about the Giants with any conviction:

They desperately need the bye week.

I’ve been around losing teams before, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a group less sure exactly why they’re losing. They haven’t experienced a slide like this since 2006, before most of them were even here, and they certainly haven’t experienced a stretch where so many different things have gone wrong.

Go ahead and put Bill Sheridan’s head on the chopping block if you want (and judging by the comments and e-mails, some of you won’t be happy until the heads of Sheridan and S C.C. Brown are there together), but the defense has been put in some awful situations lately. Eli Manning’s interceptions (five in the last two games), Jeff Feagles’ punting against the Cardinals, the kickoff coverage, the play-calling (throwing downfield on 3rd and 2) have all conspired to allow this battered ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants

New York Giants: Be Realistic About Big Blue

Everyone anointed the Giants as the team to beat in the NFC after they started 5-0 by beating up on many bad teams in the schedule.
The team earned the benefit of the doubt by appearing in the postseason for three straight years with a Super Bowl championship to show for it so it's hard to quibbble about their start especially with the way they outscored those teams.
New Yorkers expected their NFC team to expose the Saints as frauds when their team came to the Bayou for the battle of undefeated teams. Instead, the joke is on the Giants.
Since the loss to the Saints, they've looked awful on the field. They lost three straight after a blowout loss to the Eagles on Sunday, and those losses hasn't been pretty either.
The Cardinals handled the Giants with ease by passing the ball at will towards that soft defense, and yesterday, the Eagles did whatever they wanted when it came to running the ball and passing the ball.
Tom Coughlin ponders the questions that plague his team right now.

Browns Owner Randy Lerner Is Actively Talking To Retired GM Ernie Accorsi

Now that Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner has made a statement to his management staff by firing General Manager George Kokinis, ESPN.com has reported that Lerner is actively talking to retired and former New York Giants GM Ernie Accorsi.
Accorsi retired in 2007, is a former Browns GM back in 1985-1992 during their multiple playoff runs to the AFC Championship in the 1980s during the Bernie Kosar era.
Most recently, Accorsi was the GM of the Giants from 1998-2006, and he is the reason that the Giants have their current quarterback Eli Manning because Accorsi was the man who conducted the trade that landed them their franchise quarterback.
Accorsi helped the Giants to a Super Bowl appearance back in 2001 against the Baltimore Ravens, but lost.
Many have also credited Accorsi for building the Giants team that won a Super Bowl in 2007 which was the year right after Accorsi retired.
Lerner has been in contact with Accorsi in the past few years asking him for advice in player personnel and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Cleveland Browns, Randy Lerner, Ernie Accorsi, New York Giants, Bernie Kosar

Trouble For the New York Giants: The Old Eli Manning Has Resurfaced

With all of the obvious problems on defense, one thing that has upset me more than anything the past three games is the old Eli Manning making an appearance.
He has not played very well at all, and what pains me the most is the poor decision making, which was something that we all thought was a thing of the past.
In the game against the Saints, Manning apparently wanted to show off his arm in his home state. He went deep on third down six times, and was 0-for-6 on those downs.
On the first one, he had Domenik Hixon in one-on-one coverage and under threw him, which allowed the defensive back to make a play on the ball. On the second one, he had Steve Smith wide open for a sure touchdown and sailed the ball over his head.
The rest of the game was much of the same story, except for one that should have been pass interference on a pass to Hakeem Nicks.
These plays were frustrating to say the least. The whole season Manning had been taking what the defenses had given him and only taking chances ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Eli Manning, New York Giants

Help is on the way ... sort of

This isn’t exactly the cavalry coming over the hill, but the Giants’ beleaguered, battered and just plain bad defense will get some help this week. Linebacker Michael Boley (knee) and Defensive tackle Chris Canty (calf) are both expected to practice on Wednesday.

Considering the defense has now had its worst three-game stretch since 1973, I can’t imagine that’s enough to solve all their problems. But every little bit helps.

Meanwhile, CB Aaron Ross (hamstring) probably won’t do much this week, but Tom Coughlin said that it’s possible he’ll do some individual drills next week. That would be the bye week, by the way, which means the Giants could possibly get him back before November is over, too.

As for the injuries from the Giants’ game in Philly on Sunday - - the physical ones, not the psychological ones - - Coughlin said both WR Domenik Hixon (hip pointer) and WR Sinorice Moss (foot) are “sore”. He said he wouldn’t know much ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Michael Boley, Chris Canty, Aaron Ross, Tom Coughlin

Monday morning, after the bye

It's time to say goodbye to the bye week and hello to the rest of the season, with just over half of the games on the Redskins' schedule still remaining to be played. Things are just beginning to get interesting in the NFC East, with the Giants plummeting like a stone, the unpredictable Eagles playing well and the Cowboys rising. The Redskins, who have played only two NFC East opponents, return to practice today, preparing for Sunday's game at Atlanta. Among other things, there is an open roster spot, created when the team placed tackle Chris Samuels on the season-ending injured-reserve list. The Redskins pick up after a 2-5 nightmarish start that included Coach Jim Zorn being stripped of play-calling duties, the loss of right guard Randy Thomas and Samuels to season-ending injuries and the erosion of quarterback Jason Campbell's confidence. So much happened - and most of it bad
