The 31-year-old Pierce originally sustained a burner when the Giants played Arizona on Oct. 25.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Antonio Pierce, Arizona Cardinals

Pierce out "indefinitely" with bulging disc

Antonio Pierce, the Giants’ defensive leader and starting middle linebacker, is out of Sunday’s game and out “indefinitely” according to to the team due to a bulging disc in his neck.

That stunning news was delivered from the team this evening after Pierce returned from an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York late this afternoon. According to the team, he had been experiencing some discomfort in practice this week, which they believe is related to a burner he suffered in the loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 25.

Pierce, the team said, had experienced “very little discomfort” since that injury, but the change in his status prompted the medical staff to send him for the tests. After the MRI, he was examined by Dr. Russell Warren, the Giants’ doctor, and Dr. Frank Camissa, the Chief of the Spinal Surgical Services at HSS.

Then they hit him with the stunning news.

“I’m shocked with what I heard from the doctors this ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Antonio Pierce

Falcons running back Jerious Norwood practiced Friday for the second straight day after missing Atlanta's last four games with a hip flexor.
Ross' return could come at safety

Aaron Ross seems to be on track for a return to the starting lineup, but he might be returning at a different position.

The former starting cornerback took some snaps with the second team defense at safety during the Giants’ practice this afternoon. Tom Coughlin said that was done more because the Giants have a shortage of numbers at that position, but Ross sounded like a player ready and willing to make the switch.

“I can (play safety),” Ross said. “I don’t know if I’m going to or not, but I can.”

Coughlin emphasized that Ross “is a corner”. And when he was asked if Ross could play another position in a game, he said “Not at this point in time. But you never know.”

It’s probably more likely that Ross would see time in a safety-like position in nickel or dime defenses. He said he often played like that on passing downs in Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive scheme the last two years.

Third time is a charm for Ross

In his third attempt to come back from this thrice-injured hamstring, Giants defensive back Aaron Ross has managed to practice for three straight days.

He was out on the field this afternoon working with the second-team defense during the small portion of practice open to the media. Though it’s still unclear whether he’ll be active for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, it certainly appears as if things are headed that way.

In fact, Tom Coughlin could have some very interesting roster decisions on Sunday since all 53 players on his active roster are practicing again, including RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot). Nobody is expected to miss Sunday’s game due to an injury.

That actually will make Ross a tough fit. The only defensive back who seems a lock not to dress is Dominique Johnson, the rookie who was acquired last week from the Denver Broncos’ practice squad. If you figure the usual suspects also won’t dress — T Guy Whimper, C Adam Koets, RB ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Aaron Ross

After missing the first nine games of the season with a severe hamstring strain, New York Giants cornerback Aaron Ross is poised to make his 2009 debut Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Ross continued to practice at full speed Thursday, his third practice since returning to action.
T.C.: 'Good to have everybody out there'

Just got back in from the locker room. Coach Tom Coughlin talked about having everybody on the practice field.

“It felt pretty good to have everybody out there working,” Coughlin said. “That was a good sign. We have enough room on the field to accommodate that.”

As for Ross, Coughlin said, “We are just going to go and watch him practice, let him put a few practices together.”

Coughlin said Ross did “less than one-half” of practice activities.

Do Da Dirty Bird: Previewing Week 11, Falcons @ Giants

The bye is a ponderous thing. It can be a blessing, allowing a sliding team to rest, regroup, and refocus, or it can be the kiss of death, interrupting a group's rhythm or allowing losses to fester.
The Atlanta Falcons got theirs out of the way right away, but they've been unable to escape the bye week's effect since then: They've drawn three teams coming back from their Sunday off as of the end of Week 10, and are about to play yet another rested squad.
Not to sound overdramatic or anything, but this one is singular in its importance to the rest of our season, as we're facing the wild card of the NFC Wild Card contenders, the New York Giants.
Did they get their minds right on their sabbatical, or were their four straight losses before it just the beginning? How soon will the fickle Big Apple turn its collective back on the Boys in Blue? Is one of these injuries going to turn into something serious?
And finally, say it with me now: Will the real Eli Manning please stand up ?
I won't be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons

I’ll update you later when coach Tom Coughlin meets with the media. So strange not to be writing a ton of Giants players’ names with injuries next to them in this blog for once.

"Bitter" Boley out for win, not revenge

Michael Boley was “bitter”. He had no problem admitting that today. The way things ended for him in Atlanta left a terrible taste in his mouth.

But it’s been nine months, the Giants have lost four straight games, and he’s missed most of his Giants career with injuries. So heading into his first game against his old team, the Atlanta Falcons, he’s got more important things than revenge on his mind.

“It would’ve been easier to say ‘OK I’m looking forward to playing Atlanta’ if we hadn’t lost four straight. Right now it’s all about winning this next game, period.”

Having said that, Boley - - the Giants’ $25 million linebacker - - opened up today about the bad ending to his four-year Falcons career. He was a rising star in Atlanta in 2007 before Mike Smith took over as coach in 2008. Boley’s production dropped and, believe it or not, the Falcons coaches told him “I wasn’t aggressive ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Michael Boley

Mock draft: Mays the solution for Giants' struggling secondary?

                    Russ Lande, War Room scouts

Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande and his team of former NFL scouts produce their 2010 mock draft, with the order based on current records (*-underclassman):
  1. Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
The Rams have whiffed on two recent first-round D-linemen (Adam Carriker, Chris Long). Suh is an impact interior defender who would upgrade the defense immediately.

The Browns need someone to make plays, and Dez Bryant would fit the bill.
  2. Browns: Dez Bryant*, WR, Oklahoma State
The Browns' offense is historically bad, scoring only five touchdowns in nine games. A big part of the problem is a lack of playmakers.

  3. Lions: Gerald McCoy*, DT, Oklahoma
The Lions must upgrade the pass rush and interior defensive line, and McCoy is capable of making game-changing plays routinely.
  4. Buccaneers: Eric Berry*, CB, Tennessee
CB Ronde Barber turns 35 in April, and S Sabby Piscitelli is not a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants

The Atlanta Falcons Try to Regroup against the New York Giants

Starting the season, this match-up stood out to me. My expectations were that if the Falcons could win this game they would be contenders. After 10 weeks in this NFL season, the value has changed.
The Falcons are playing like a team that just can't get in sync. They started the season 4-1 and appeared to be a legitimate contender in the NFC as many had expected, then came the downward spiral.
Just as the Falcons found their running game and seemed to be clicking on all cylinders, their second year "face of the franchise" hit a slump. Even with Pro Bowl running back Michael Turner averaging 142 yards a game over the past three weeks, Matt Ryan has been very unstable at best.
And what's worse? Turner went out in the second quarter last week against the Panthers and isn't expected back for at least this week's contest against the Giants.
The Giants are having much of the same problem this season as the Falcons. Expected to take the NFC East by most, they have fallen into the same spiral that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, John Abraham

Atlanta's Turner: Don't count me out

Injured Falcons running back Michael Turner hasn’t been ruled “out” of Sunday’s game against the Giants. And apparently he might not be.

Turner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that “I’m going to take a couple of days” before making a decision on whether he can play through his ankle sprain.

“I don’t have a time frame on the injury,” Turner told the AJC today. “I’m not going to count myself out right now. It’s only Wednesday. I’m going to take a couple of days. Later on in the week, I ‘ll know for sure if I’ll be able to play or not.”

Turner, who has averaged a whopping 9.1 yards per carry in the last three games, underwent a series of tests on Monday but declined to say what the doctors said.

“They didn’t tell me anything about the tests,” Turner said. “Just an ankle sprain. They didn’t say no degrees or weeks or anything like that.
Ross still on track for season debut

Cornerback Aaron Ross is practicing again and it’s starting to sound like he’s going to make his season debut on Sunday afternoon.

The thrice-injured former starter is participating in his third consecutive practice, though he is expected to be limited. If his hurtin’ hamstring doesn’t have any setbacks during the week he’ll probably see that action increase.

That, said coach Tom Coughlin, is entirely up to him.

“We’re just trying to bring him along and give him more opportunities and take off any kind of limitations that are there,” Coughlin said. “It’s his job to prove to us that there is no limitation. Right now he’s still limited and we’ll go from there.”

For what it’s worth, Ross’ fiancé, Sanya Richards said this morning via Twitter that “Ross plays his first game this weekend! We’re all soooo excited!!!”
