Check out News writers new book

While you’re waiting for The Turk to knock on your door on Saturday so you can bring your playbook back to the coaches, here’s something to keep you occupied: The last in a three-part series of excerpts from my new book, Eli Manning: The Making of a Quarterback - a web exclusive for NYDailyNews.com.

This excerpt is from a chapter that looks at one of the many obstacles Eli Manning had to overcome in his career - the organizational loyalty to Kerry Collins. The first excerpt already told you how loyal Wellington Mara was to Collins. This one shows the loyalty of Collins’ old - and Manning’s new - teammates, which was a bit of a problem in Manning’s early days in New York.

It wasn’t easy back in 2004 for the Giants players to accept they had a new Quarterback of the Future, when they had a deep affection and respect for their Quarterback of the Present. It obviously wasn’t easy for Collins, either. A few days after the Draft Day trade, he demanded ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Eli Manning

Washington Redskins' Jon Jansen May Lose His Spot To Stephon Heyer

Current starting right tackle Jon Jansen, who has been a Redskin longer than any other current player, has had a very poor pre-season, letting defensive ends run right by him many times.
Jansen received a hefty contract extension after the 2006 season, but he broke and dislocated his ankle in game one of the 2007 season, forcing him to sit out the entire year. Now he's healthy, but has in no way been playing like his old self.
Stephon Heyer, who is entering his second season in the NFL, played well against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.
Coach Zorn has now notified the media that Jansen's starting spot may be up for grabs. I assume Jansen may start against the Giants on September 4th, and if he plays poorly, we can expect to see Heyer starting in week two against the New Orleans Saints.

Veterans facing axe as Giants get set to trim roster

In a perfect world, the Giants would return with the exact same team that won Super Bowl XLII just seven months ago. But the NFL isn't perfect and the reality of the league is harsh. That's why several veteran members of the defending champions could be ex-Giants on Saturday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Super Bowl

So, who gets cut?

The final cuts aren’t due until tomorrow, but there are a few Giants’ veterans who will be a little anxious to hear if their phones are going to ring.

Among the vets who could - could - be on the bubble when Tom Coughlin and his staff makes their final decisions by 6 p.m. tomorrow are CB Sam Madison, CB R.W. McQuarters, RB Reuben Droughns, QB Anthony Wright, and, of course WR Sinorice Moss. The Giants are deep at cornerback, running back and receiver, and the numbers for those vets just might not work out.

“It’s always a good sign when it’s a difficult time making decisions on the 53 (man roster),” Coughlin said on a conference call today. “You always want to be in that position. You don’t want to see a player leave, but you want the positions to be competitive.”

It’s not likely that both Madison and McQuarters would be cut, but given the fact that Corey Webster and Aaron Ross have seemingly solidified the starting corner jobs and that the Giants also have young, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin

Reliving The Catch

The highlight of last night’s preseason game didn’t happen down on the football field. It happened on the scoreboard, where the Giants were showing the Top Five Plays from Super Bowl XLII. The No. 1 play, of course, was the great escape of Eli Manning that resulted in the remarkable one-handed catch by David Tyree.

And down below, on the field last night, Patriots safety Rodney Harrison - who covered Tyree on that play - looked up from his team’s defensive huddle and his eyes were glued to the screen.

The truth is, that play was so incredible, so dramatic, and had so many remarkable elements, that I could’ve written an entire book on it. As it is, I devoted an entire chapter of my new book, Eli Manning: The Making of a Quarterback , to that final drive. And today, in the Daily News, we ran an excerpt of that chapter that breaks down what some people say is the greatest play in Super Bowl history .

Now that the preseason is mercifully over, and the title defense ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Eli Manning, Super Bowl

Missed kick rattling cages

Did the missed extra point Thursday night by kicker Josh Huston make you a little nervous about the Giants’ kicking situation? Then this probably won’t help:

Lawrence Tynes, the kicker the Giants hope will be ready to kick on opening day, said Thursda night he has not yet been given clearance by the team’s medical staff to resume kicking. He said his injured left knee feels “great” (though it’s still wrapped) and he’s “hopeful” of kicking at practice in the next few days.

But as of right now, he has not been given the go.

“I feel great, but whether they let me kick or not is up to them,” Tynes said. “I feel like I could do it, but feeling it and doing it are two different things. I haven’t touched a ball in three weeks.”

Tynes, of course, injured the knee on his plant let about three weeks ago. He had arthroscopic “exploratory” surgery on the knee last week, and no structural damage was detected.

Giants Defeat Patriots in Pre-Season Super Bowl Rematch

On the same day the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox, the New York Giants defeated the same team they upset in Super Bowl XLII, the New England Patriots, by a score of 19-14.
Giants' Head Coach Tom Coughlin decided to rest starting quarterback Eli Manning in the final preseason tuneup of the year. David Carr started for the Giants, and did a good job.
Carr completed 20 out of 29 passes, threw a total of 192 yards, passed for two touchdowns, and threw no interceptions.
Pats' superstar quarterback Tom Brady also sat out tonight, nursing an injury. Matt Gutierrez, Matt Cassel, and Kevin O'Connell went a combined 12 for 19, tossed 128 yards for one touchdown and one interception.
In the first quarter on their first drive, the G-Men scored. Carr threw a 26 yard pass to Darcy Johnson for a touchdown, and the Giants went up 7-0.
The score would remain 7-0 until the second quarter. Carr tossed a nine yard pass to receiver Sinorice Moss for a touchdown, but kicker Josh Huston missed ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, New England Patriots, Super Bowl

Several starters sitting Thursday night

Well, it’s now official. You can turn your TV sets off.

Tom Coughlin has called off the dogs, and will not play several of his starters, including QB Eli Manning, WR Plaxico Burress, WR Amani Toomer, TE Kevin Boss, RT Kareem McKenzie and DE Justin Tuck.

Sitting Burress isn’t a surprise, given all his ankle issues, and Tuck (foot) and Toomer (knee) had sporadic health issues this summer. But here’s my question: Why sit only Manning and McKenzie and not all the rest of the starters? Are 10 snaps, at most, really going to help C Shaun O’Hara, RB Brandon Jacobs, DT Barry Cofield, CB Aaron Ross, or any of the others?

Why take the risk that they’ll get hurt?

Anyway, several other players are not expected to play tonight because of injuries: LB Danny Clark (groin), OL Na’Shan Goddard (concussion), LB Jonathan Goff (back), LB Antonio Pierce (back), CB Terrell Thomas (hamstring) and K Lawrence Tynes (knee).

The Giants also released a statement saying QB Anthony Wright (back/neck) ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants

5 guys to watch tonight

Less than seven months ago, the Giants and Patriots staged one of the most epic Super Bowl battles of all time, and tonight… tonight they come together again for a rematch for the ages to… to…

Oh, who am I kidding? I’m not even going to try to fake excitement. It’s the fourth preseason game. If the Patriots dress more than three players who played in Super Bowl XLII it’ll be a miracle. This is a game for the most die-hard of fans, and people who fell down and can’t reach their remote.

So if you fall into one of those two categories - and really, you’d be better off curling up with a good book - my advice is to ignore what you see from the starters. As long as they get out of the game unhurt, that’s all that really matters. Instead, you’ll want to focus your attention on these five guys, who head into the game with something to prove:

S Kenny Phillips - He doesn’t have to prove that he belongs in the league, but he got increased playing time with the first team ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants

When Eli Manning was introduced as the Giants’ Quarterback of the Future on Draft Day, 2004, everyone in the Giants’ organization insisted the same thing: The decision to trade for him was unanimous. This wasn’t just Ernie Accorsi’s obsession. Everyone in the building wanted to make the deal.

Four years later, while researching my new book - Eli Manning: The Making of a Quarterback - I learned that wasn’t completely true. In the days before the trade, Wellington Mara - the then 87-year-old patriarch of the Giants - was, as Accorsi described him, “cool” to the idea.

It wasn’t that Mara didn’t like or want Eli Manning. It was that he had strong feelings for Kerry Collins, and after watching him lead the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV he didn’t want to just cast Collins aside. Less than a week before the trade, Accorsi was still very worried that Mara might end up vetoing the deal.

Some of the details can be found right here , in the first of two excerpts from my book that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Eli Manning, Wellington Mara

Eli named Giants' MVP

Eli Manning is the MVP!

OK, we knew that. Or at least anyone who watched the end of Super Bowl XLII knew that. But today, at the Giants’ annual Kickoff Luncheon, Manning added another trophy to his shelf when he was named the Giants’ Most Valuable Player. The award was voted on by the Giants’ coaches (unlike the media-voted award from the Super Bowl, it did not come with a brand new car).

The rest of the awards were … well, I don’t want to say they were fixed but there were some interesting winners and coincidences that would seem to conveniently emphasize Tom Coughlin’s favorite word: “Team.” It’s safe to say that, like everything Coughlin does, the choices were made with a specific purpose in mind.

There were six Offensive Players of the Year: Plaxico Burress and the entire offensive line - Shaun O’Hara, Chris Snee, Rich Seubert, David Diehl and Kareem McKenzie.

The Defensive Player of the Year was a split between Osi Umenyiora ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Eli Manning, Super Bowl, Tom Coughlin, Plaxico Burress

Let's talk Favre and PSLs

As usual, I was the last guy out of the press room last night. As I packed up my stuff and took one last look around the room where I worked the last 20 years, attending coaches’ news conferences and dodging paper balls fired by Cannizzaro, I could’ve sworn I heard an echo: “YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! HELLO? YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!”

You know what? Maybe it is time for a change of scenery.

Two hot-button issues right now for Jets fans: Sitting Brett Favre in the final pre-season game and PSLs. Here’s my take:

On Favre: Eric Mangini is absolutely making the right move by sitting him. (He hasn’t made that official, but he’s leaning heavily in that direction, so I’ll take a small leap and say he’s not playing.) What could possibly be gained by running six or eight plays against the Eagles’ backups? If Favre were to play, the rest of the starters would have to play, too, increasing the chances of an injury to a front-line player. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Jets, Brett Favre, New York Giants

The New York Giants lost Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury over the weekend and were rejected Tuesday by fellow defensive end Michael Strahan, who decided to remain in retirement after being contacted by the Giants about the possibility of returning to replace Umenyiora. But no one should be feeling too sorry for them. They still have a pretty good set of defensive ends in Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka.
Giants Must Now Rely On Manning

Now that the Strahan drama has quickly ended with his decision to stay retired, the New York Giants need to take a different course to success. The Giants lost five defensive starters going into this season. Eli Manning and the offense need to step up and make things happen. The Giants will find themselves in the unfamiliar position of having to out score opponents to win games. This could translate into mediocrity following their incredible Superbowl triumph. With that said, even the offense has it's challenges going in, Toomer is getting older and starting to look so, how long once Bradshaw returns from jail will it take to be ready, can Kevin Boss "really" fill the bill replacing Shockey? Here's what will be, Toomer will spend more time resting injuries than catching passes this season. Ward will do well enough to make Bradshaw old news, unless he does something really special. Boss will not be the "Boss" but he won't be terrible. The good news is Jacobs will repeat his 1,000 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, Kevin Boss

Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Players on Winning Teams

This is the third article in a series of articles that I am writing on Fantasy Football.
The first article detailed a basic draft strategy — Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Strategy .
The second article featured my opinions on Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty leagues — Fantasy Football Notebook - Keeper Leagues Love them or Hate Them.
The third article deals with Fantasy Football Draft Tools — Fantasy Football Notebook - Draft Tools.
Today’s article revisits draft strategies or just picking up players in general. My advice is to pick up players on winning teams.
Think about it, this is common sense, if a team is doing great — look for players on their teams. If it comes down to drafting a player on a team with playoff possibilities vs. a team that is rebuilding, take the player on the winning team. The winning team will most likely score more and go on streaks. If you need a player on the waiver wire, look for a player on a winning or successful team.

Michael Strahan will stay in retirement

Michael Strahan isn't doing a Brett Favre. The seven-time Pro Bowler decided to stay retired after seriously considering a request by the Super Bowl champion New York Giants to return to the team in the wake of a season-ending injury to fellow star defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Michael Strahan, Brett Favre, Super Bowl, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora
