Oakland Raiders' Schedule Preview/Predictions

Oakland Raider fans have much to be excited about. From an explosive, rookie running back to the newly acquired, fifth-year, two - time Pro Bowler DeAngelo Hall. So let’s get run down the schedule and evaluate the competition for the Raiders and predict the possible outcome.

  Week One: Denver Broncos
Let’s not forget that it’s on Monday Night Football, in Oakland, where the Raiders have thrived for so long. And let's also not forget it’s against the HATED Broncos, who have terrorized Raiders for so long.
The Broncos have been on a steady decline in the last few years, and Mike Shanahan may have reached his window of success in Denver. No unit has vastly improved over the last few years for the Broncos. The Raiders, on the other hand, have improved with the experience of young players and free-agent acquisitions.
The Raiders' home field, running game, and big plays contribute:
  Raiders 34 Broncos 20

Week Two: @ Kansas City Chiefs

Can Louis Rankin Start Returning Kicks?

In last week's matchup against the Tennessee Titans, the Oakland Raiders' punt returner, Johnnie Lee Higgins, made a huge mistake. In case you missed it, he fielded a ball inside his own 10-yard line, then started off running backwards. He then lost the football, only to have it recovered by the Titans in the end zone.
This particular event, paired with a couple that happened last season, have the Raider Nation wondering what would happen if we had a healthy Tyvon Branch back there? What if Darren wanted to return punts? Can Todd Watkins field the end-over-end kicks?
While pondering through all of this, I believe I found the solution...Louis Rankin.
He is our undrafted RB that came out of the University of Washington, where he would return kicks, so he has the vision to do it. In all of the times I watched him at both UW and the local Lincoln High School games, never have I seen him go backwards or try to field a ball in the presence of his own goal line.
This could be a great solution for a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans

Oakland Raiders Preview: Bad Contracts Equal More Heartache for Raider Nation

Raider Nation may not like me very much, but you have to respect Raider fans. They’re quite possibly the most passionate, diehard fans in the NFL.
Their blind passion is enviable. While most fanbases are skeptical, they're forever optimistic. They believe in their team, no matter what any of us "experts" say.
And they always stick with their team no matter what Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 —through the good and the bad, the thick and the thin.
Unfortunately for Raider Nation, lately, it’s been more thin than thick.
Oakland Raiders: Lane Kiffin's Words Taken Out Of Context

I watched the game Friday like many of you, and I can tell you Lane Kiffin and his team had that game all wrapped up. But like Kiffin said, we have no one else to look at for that position, so it is what it is.
When the game started, I was not too happy with the start of the offense's first two drives. By the third drive, the offense had appeared to warm up, and they took it to the house on a top tier defense, which impressed me a lot.
It actually made me all giddy because we have something to really look forward to this season. The defense, on the other hand, appeared to have the same old problems with stuffing the run.
Did anyone else see Kiffin tare into Ryan a bit on the sideline? I wonder what that was about (as if I didn't already know).
I read some articles this past weekend that just stink to high heaven. I agree that Kiffin should have more say who comes in and who goes home. But if you are a Raider's fan, you know how that goes.
You also know all the negative articles that come ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Lane Kiffin, Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders' Are Getting Help from the 2004 NFL Draft

Leading up to the 2004 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders, like every other team, had several needs.

Possessing the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, the team’s biggest needs were quarterback, defensive end, running back, wide receiver, outside linebacker, and middle linebacker. The Raiders had nine draft picks in the draft and were thought to be targeting QBs Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, or Philip Rivers. It was also reported that the Raiders were looking to improve the offensive line and were eyeing LT Robert Gallery. Several others had the Raiders targeting WRs Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, or Mike Williams. The Raiders chose to improve the offensive line and selected LT Robert Gallery, who, at the time, was one of the highest-rated offensive tackles leaving college in years. The second round brought center Jake Grove, who was rated the best center in the draft. The other seven selections from that draft are no longer on the team and several are no longer in the NFL.

Well, the circus in now open. Grab your tickets and come see the amazing football team!
No, it's not that bad. Trust me, it could be worse.
First of all, Lane Kiffin, showing that there are no strings attached to his back or arms, stated it pretty plainly: There's not a lot of depth and because of this, some subpar players will probably be able to hang onto the club...because there's no one else to do the job.
Take Higgins for example. One week he is hailed, and the next week he is barbecued. Who would replace him? There aren't enough healthy bodies to fill in the CB spots half the time. Who is going to return kicks?
Ah....but that is a problem that can be fixed. First of all, you need a couple key players to get healthy, like DeAngelo Hall or Tyvon Branch. Hey, if Louis Rankin can catch, stick him back there and let him get a full head of steam.
The next sideshow is the incredible tower of one. That would be Miller, our tight end with hands of glue. If you don't believe me, check out the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders

Oakland Raiders All-Time Defense

As with every team, the offensive skill players get most of the pub, most of the ink and most of the girls. The Oakland Raiders are no different in that aspect. But what good does it do if your offense is a juggernaut scoring at a clip of 40 points a game or more…and your “D” gives up 50?
Can you say 1980’s San Diego Chargers and Don Coryell? The offense was known as “Air Coryell” for the Head Coach’s love of the passing game. The defense was known as just air. As in “we couldn’t score against air”, a common phrase in the lingo of “coach-speak”. However, few coaches could have said that about the Chargers’ defenses in that era.
The Raiders, on the other hand, have a long and proud tradition on that side of the ball. In the Silver and Blacks’ last Super Bowl winning season, 1983-84, while the offense was explosive at times, the defense was downright nasty.
Somehow in the discussions of the great NFL ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders

Oren O'Neal, That's Okay, It Was Only a Game Winning TD

Having started the preseason 2-0, and just minutes away from big talk in the beginning of the season, it was third and goal, and the call was a fullback dive. O'Neal's number was called, but he now wishes it hadn't been.

The Oakland Raiders' defense held up strong and got the ball back to the offense to seal the game, or so they thought. After a 72-yard run by Adimchinobe, followed by a decent run up to the goal line, his number was called again—but twice he was stopped just short.
The next call baffled me, but it might have something to do with the fact that all the back-ups lack a good grasp of the offense to audible, or at least have someone go in motion.
Greg Knapp decided to run a fullback dive up the gut for the fourth running play in a row from just a half yard out. It could have been an amazing play call had it worked.
Oren took the hand-off and was doomed for failure. The Tennessee Titans had the box loaded. I thought for sure the Raiders would at least do a play action, or a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Oren O'Neal, Tennessee Titans

What Is the 2008 Oakland Raiders' Achilles Heel?

The pink elephant in the room is richer than all of the other elephants in his jungle. He moves about on a repaired knee and with sore shoulders. Upon these shoulders, much of the responsibility has been placed for the success of the Raiders' 2008 season.

Stop the run. Penetrate. Don't wear down. Stop the run! Can he deliver on these expectations? If we're supposed to learn from history, then the answer is a discouraging "no".

In the early 2000s, when Oakland was dominating the AFC West, the team trotted out monsters like Darrell Russell, Grady Jackson, John Parrella, and Sam Adams. Thou shalt not run on us—and teams did not.

The run defense was consistently in the top 12, and Oakland enjoyed playing meaningful games in December and January.

This year's ferocious collection? Tommy Kelly, Terdell Sands, and Gerrard Warren. The problem? We had this exact same trio to begin last season. They were absolutely shredded week after dreadful week. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders

Oakland Raiders Are Battling Through Injuries

Well, seems like the injury bug has stopped in for a short time.
Some names—DeAngelo Hall, Janikowski, Shane Lechler, and Nnamdi—have cropped up in recent days, and even Kiffin sounded off on the matter.
In the words of MAD Magazine...what, me worry?
You can be a little worried. Anyone would be, but then, it's also early in the preseason. We just finished the first game. It's amazing the speed in which these players heal from injury. Tyvon Branch, for example. He undergoes surgery, and they're talking he'll be ready for the game on Friday.
Sure, not all injuries are that fast to recover from. Some you play around. Hall, for example, is working on either a broken bone in his hand, a bone bruise, or a sprain. It lingers, but he says he's still able to play. Heck, if he makes interceptions with it...keep him injured.
The main reason I'm not worried is this. We've got almost a month before everyone who makes the team plays in Oakland against Denver. At that point, we hope ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders

Laurence Maroney and LaMont Jordan Make a Solid Backfield Combo

The regular season is almost here, and this year, the Patriots have added some real depth at the running-back position. In the offseason, the Patriots acquired veteran RB LaMont Jordan from the Oakland Raiders. A strong back, Jordan never got the chance to excel with Oakland's weak program.
Jordan has played in 97 career games with 29 starts and has totaled 792 rushes for 3,285 yards (4.1 avg.) and 24 touchdowns. In Aug. 7's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, Jordan put up one touchdown and 76 yards in 19 attempts.
Laurence Maroney, the other key Patriot RB played in 13 games while making six starts at running back in 2007. He rushed for 835 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and scoring six touchdowns.
With a strong companion at the running-back position, the two should be able to build off each other's strengths and combine for some big numbers this season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, LaMont Jordan, Laurence Maroney, New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens

Going into the 49ers game last Friday night, there was no doubt in my mind or many of those who've been following the Raiders over the past few months, that the Raiders were a much better team than we'd seen over the past five years.
Unlike past seasons, they didn't disappoint as they showed most of the Bay Area that what many of us had been saying was at least partly true, they WERE better. The question now becomes, will they stay that way?
The news coming out of camp is filled with injury after injury of key performers that the Raiders can't afford to lose. The head coach has been quoted saying that he doesn't have enough depth and that the team isn't very good right now.
What's a fan to think?
Some go about their business and blindly believe that the Raiders will be good or bad this season, regardless of the news. Others, like myself, seem to continue living this roller coaster of dread/optimism that has it's ups and downs, corkscrews, and flips.

Oakland Raiders, No. 1 Rushing Attack ?

Well after watching the first preseason game, I can almost say with certainty that Kiffin will be calling run plays like it was going out of style this season. We all know Fargas is a hard runner and will pick up where he left off last season.
McFadden the top RB in this year's draft, is now an Oakland Raider. Although I am not convinced he will be the next Barry Sanders, I do think he will make a name for himself.
But the real story, the really real story I think is that Michael Bush. After a season off with an injury, when he lined up he looked really good. Had some nice gains and a touchdown.
I think Bush will be the impact player for the Raiders running game this year more than Fargas and McFadden. Why you ask?
Because he had the look and actions of really wanting to get that extra yard after the hit. I think Bush will break the 1,000-yard mark with a Raiders running game that will probably go over 2,000 yards rushing for the season.
You say I'm crazy, I say tomotoes you say tomatoes. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders

Raider-49er game "is what it is" and Brett Favre

Raiders-49er game “is what it is”
It has been a few months since I have attempted to put words to paper. During the long summer I have had trouble getting my interest up. Now that we have our first preseason game in the books I’m starting to get a bit jazzed up.
Friday night’s game between the Raiders and 49ers is what it is or should I say was what it was? Two words, Its Preseason!
Going into the game I thought the Raiders would be able to run the ball and they did. I thought the 49ers would have trouble scoring and they did. No crystal ball here. The 49ers had trouble most of last year scoring, and the Raiders for the most part ran the ball well last year.
There was a lot of gushing over McFadden and Bush going into the game. They both did fairly well as did Justin Fargas with five rushes for 25 yards for a 5.0 YPC. JaMarcus Russell did not throw the ball all that much so it still remains to be seen if he has what it takes in that category.
It appeared that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Brett Favre

Why San Francisco 49er's Will Be Better Than The Raiders This Season

I think it's important to note that first and foremost, boo Raiders! Boo!
Now that I've gotten that out of my system, I'm eager to see how Darren McFumble is going to help a team that averaged the 6th most rushing yards/game with Michael Bush to return as well. Seriously do you have nothing better to do with over five million dollars salary to go from the 6th to the 3rd, 2nd or 1st most rushing yards/game?
Most teams address their weaknesses in the offseason, like the San Francisco 49ers. In Oakland we address our running and pass defense which are already top 10 in the NFL.
Now that I'm done bashing the Raider faithful, I like the looks of the San Francisco 49ers, who are now being led by Mike Martz who at one point made Marc Bulger, Jon Kitna, and Kurt Warner have arms that might of been considered pro bowl worthy.
      Even Jon Kitna ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, Mike Martz, Isaac Bruce

Safety Adam Archuleta has agreed to a contract with the Oakland Raiders. Archuleta visited the Raiders today and could participate in the team's evening practice. The former first-round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams will try to revive his career in Oakland. He had unsuccessful stints with the Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears since leaving the Rams via free agency. The Raiders might move Archuleta to linebacker, the position he played in college....Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, Adam Archuleta, Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears

The Oakland Raiders agreed to terms on a contract with Adam Archuleta on Monday in a move to add depth to their defense.

Archuleta was at the Raiders facility Monday morning and left with trainer Rod Martin to take a physical. Archuleta was expected to take part in the night practice. The team did not immediately announce a corresponding roster move to create space for Archuleta.

Archuleta has been a safety in the NFL but played linebacker in college at Arizona State.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Adam Archuleta
