Giants beat 'Skins to open title defense (AP)

The New York Giants kicked off their Super Bowl title defense with what else -- defense. Playing without Pro Bowl linemen Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora, the defense limited the new-look Washington Redskins to 11 first downs and 209 total yards and gave indications that these Giants are back for another run in a 16-7 victory that ushered in the NFL season on Thursday night.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora

The Giants begin their Super Bowl defense against the Redskins minus a pair of lethal pass rushers, but their defense remains stout thanks to Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka.

McDougle signs with Giants for DE help

The New York Giants shored up their defensive end position by signing former Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick Jerome McDougle.

The Super Bowl champions lost seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan to retirement in June and then had two-time Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora sidelined with a season-ending knee injury a little more than a week ago in a game against the Jets.

New York moved Mathias Kiwanuka from linebacker back to defensive end days after Umenyiora was hurt.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Osi Umenyiora, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Jerome McDougle, Super Bowl, Michael Strahan

Lots of Question Marks For Lots of Teams

Here's what strikes me most about this preseason: Just about all the presumed top teams in the league will enter the season with a major question mark. Start with the two Super Bowl teams: The Giants traded tight end Jeremy Shockey before training camp, lost defensive end Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury suffered during a preseason game and failed to lure Michael Strahan out of retirement to replace him. The Patriots haven't...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl, Jeremy Shockey, Osi Umenyiora, Michael Strahan

The New York Giants lost Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury over the weekend and were rejected Tuesday by fellow defensive end Michael Strahan, who decided to remain in retirement after being contacted by the Giants about the possibility of returning to replace Umenyiora. But no one should be feeling too sorry for them. They still have a pretty good set of defensive ends in Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka.

Michael Strahan isn't doing a Brett Favre.
Michael Strahan Is Not Fickle

Brett Favre retired. And then he didn't. And now, instead of retiring a hero (albeit a hero we've heard enough about), he's returned as a nuisance and a Jet (a nuisance and a Jet we've heard enough about).
He made his team nuts for a while, tossing an unnecessary monkey wrench into their plans and pissed off fans across the country by hogging the headlines with his indecisiveness. And then there's his buddy, Michael Strahan. Strahan also retired after a good season, a season in which he won his first Super Bowl. Like Favre, he retired at a good time, not allowing himself to turn into a weak and outdated antique of a player. But then came Osi Umenyiora's injury and the accompanying speculation that Strahan might change his mind. The stage was set. He wasn't putting his team in a difficult position. A spot had opened up, and he could have walked back in and taken it. There wouldn't be a battle between a vet and a rookie. There wouldn't be trade rumors and talk of an intra-division swap.
And ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Michael Strahan, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora, Brett Favre

The Effect of Osi Umenyiora's Season-Ending Injury on the New York Giants

Derek Lofland from Fantasy Football Maniaxs
This is certainly a devastating loss. Osi Umenyiora has led the NY Giants in sacks each of the last three years. He has 40.5 sacks over the last four years, and he had six sacks in one game against the Eagles in 2007. He was a big part of their pass rush.
The plan to replace Michael Strahan was to move Justin Tuck to defensive end and have him team with Osi Umenyiora as double-digit sack artists. The Giants can survive this tragedy even without Strahan.
They can move Mathias Kiwanuka back to his original position of defensive end. He played that position at Boston College, as well as his first year with the NY Giants; however, that would weaken their linebacker position.
This is the worst-case scenario of preseason. To have a player of this caliber go down in preseason is the nightmare every coach has in August.
The Giants still have the talent in place to compete in the NFC East. However, it will be challenging to play as well as they did at ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora, Philadelphia Eagles, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck

Osi officially done for season

Well, now it’s official: Osi Umenyiora is on injured reserve.

The Giants made that announcement earlier today, ending any hopes that he can return for even a small part of the 2008 season. It was always a long shot anyway, and I’m not really sure why Tom Coughlin left the door opener earlier today. After all, even the Giants had called Umenyiora’s knee surgery “season-ending” when they made the announcement on Sunday morning.

A full recovery is still expected, but you won’t see Umenyiora in uniform again until next June, at minicamp, at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the Giants made another couple of moves as they reached the NFL roster limit of 75. They waived/injured receiver Craphonso Thorpe (and no, at the moment, I can’t remember what his injury is). They were also awarded receiver Marcus Monk off waivers from the Chicago Bears.

Coughlin undecided on Osi return

Osi Umenyiora’s surgery was a success, but Tom Coughlin said today that he has not decided whether to put his injured defensive end on season-ending injured reserve.

That decision may come later after Coughlin consults with the doctors, but for the moment there’s at least a slim hope that he could return before the end of the season.

“That would be something the doctors would have to have a great deal of input on,” Coughlin said. He also indicated it would be tough to hold his roster spot just for the slim hope of a January return.

Meanwhile, Coughlin confirmed that GM Jerry Reese has spoken directly with Michael Strahan, but he had little else to say on the subject. He called any talk of moving Mathias Kiwanuka back to LB to make room for Strahan “hypothetical” and didn’t offer an answer.

Giants Facing Tough Task to Convince Strahan to Return

People within the league are skeptical that the New York Giants will be able to lure Michael Strahan out of retirement. The Giants launched talks with Strahan after learning Sunday that fellow defensive end Osi Umenyiora suffered a season-ending knee injury during a preseason game Saturday night. It was thought by some observers that a lucrative contract offer would bring Strahan off the Fox television set and back into the Giants' lineup. But there...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Michael Strahan, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora

2008: The Year That Killed The Preseason -- Hopefully

In the football history books, 2008 will be forever remembered as the year that killed the preseason—hopefully.
The reasoning behind the preseason, in football and in most other sports, has always been a bit lacking. The most practical reason in the NFL is that in-game experience is the only real way to evaluate rookies.
Training camps can only tell you so much because how a player performs against a practice squad is going to be a lot different from how they perform against a first-team defense. And, more or less, rookie evaluation is the main reason why owners have resisted calls from Roger Goodell to shorten the preseason and expand the regular season to 18 games. After what has been happening to teams and their key players in the last three weeks, it is difficult to say whether the owner's status-quo stand will wither.
On Monday, the New York Giants received word that Osi Umeniyora, the teams' next Michael Strahan, would have to have season-ending knee surgery because of an ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Roger Goodell, Chad Johnson, Shawne Merriman, Osi Umenyiora

With defensive end Osi Umenyiora of the reigning Super Bowl champions out for the season with a torn meniscus, rival NFC East teams celebrated too soon of his demise.

The New York Giants are interested in luring Michael Strahan out of retirement after losing Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury Saturday night.

The Super Bowl champions have contacted the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end to see if he is interested in ending a brief retirement, a person familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press on Monday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pro Bowl, New York Giants, Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, Super Bowl

Both developments come in reaction the Giants learning Sunday that defensive end Osi Umenyiora would miss the entire season because of cartilage damage in his knee suffered during a preseason game Saturday night against the New York Jets.
Putting Osi Umenyiora's Injury Into Perspective.

The New York Giants suffered a blow to both their defense and Super Bowl hopes Saturday evening with a season ending injury to Osi Umenyiora.
Umenyiora suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee, which will sideline him for the entire 2008 season. Surgery is schedule for Tuesday August 26th, and rehabilitation should take four months.
Who does New York replace Umenyiora with?
What does his loss mean for the Giants' Super Bowl hopes?
Will the Giants make a pitch to bring Michael Strahan back from retirement?
These are all questions that Giants fans have been asking since Saturday night.
Lets take them one at a time:
Right defensive ends like Umenyiora don't grow on trees, so free agency or waivers is unlikely to yield much. That means the obvious short term move is to shift Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, his natural position.
The Giants have Renaldo Wynn, Dave Tollefson, Wallace Gilberry, and Alex Morrow competing at defensive end. All may be capable, but ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Osi Umenyiora, New York Giants, Super Bowl

Tom Coughlin has a plan to replace Osi Umenyiora, and for the moment it doesn’t include Michael Strahan.

The coach announced a few moments ago that Mathias Kiwanuka will move back to defensive end after one year as a strongside linebacker.

“I talked with him yesterday,” Coughlin said. “He was more than willing to do whatever he could do in the best interests of the team.”

Coughlin said Danny Clark will work in Kiwanuka’s spot at strongside linebacker. That means Gerris Wilkinson will play on the weakiside.

As for Strahan, Coughlin said, “There hasn’t been any discussion that I’ve been involved in” about bringing him back. However, he also said “We’re going to explore every option.”

Before he knew the severity of the injury to Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka sounded stoic in describing his fallen teammate. "I don't think it's deflating," Kiwanuka said late Saturday night. "This is the NFL.

The New York Giants moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end to replace the injured Osi Umenyiora on Monday, a decision that decreases the already slim chances of the Super Bowl champions needing to make a push to get seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan out of retirement.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Osi Umenyiora, New York Giants, Mathias Kiwanuka, Super Bowl, Michael Strahan

Two Seasons Turn on Hinges

Two plays in the second quarter of two preseason games, taking place at roughly the same time, one in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the other in Charlotte, North Carolina and both involving famous defensive ends.
