BALTIMORE -- The Colts are undefeated, yet somehow underrated. Six of their 10 victories have come by four points or less. Maybe if Bill Belichick punts instead of gambles last week, the Colts are not undefeated at all. Meanwhile, the unbeaten Saints (10-0) have been the sexier team, scoring more points, winning by larger margins. But in their 17-15 victory over the Ravens on Sunday, the Colts displayed many of their special qualities. They are cool in the clutch. After a handful of mediocre weeks, I rebounded somewhat with a 10-correct showing last weekend. One game has already been played this week, and I'm sorry to say I picked the Carolina Panthers at home against a Miami Dolphins team that struggled against a pretty poor Tampa Bay squad the week before. Oops. Last week's record: 10-5 Season record: 96-48 (66.7%) Cowboys over Redskins — Dallas lost a tough on in Green Bay last week, but there's still a lot to like about this team—especially if Washington is without their defensive anchor in Albert Haynesworth. Lions over Browns — Well is this the game of the week or what? Somebody has to win (well, probably) and I think there's a little more to like about the Lions than there is the Browns right now. When you think of top tier quarterbacks, you automatically talk about Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. However, over the past couple of seasons and especially this year, Drew Brees has quietly joined the duo at the top of the NFL. Last year, Brees played for a team that didn't have too much going for it. They were 28th in rushing yards and 26th in scoring defense. They played in a tough NFC South with Carolina and Atlanta, but the lone bright spot was the passing offense of the New Orleans Saints. Brees was magnificent, throwing for 5,069 yards and 34 touchdowns. It is well known that I believe that Brees should have been league MVP. After all, when you compare him to the league MVP, he did thrown for 1,067 more yards, 0.8 more yards per attempt, seven more touchdowns, 26 more passes of 20 or more yards, and over twice as many passes of 40 or more yards (16 to 7). In a day and age in which professional athletes are often depicted as criminals or over-greedy, grown up babies, I feel that the need for specific role models in sports is absolutely critical. While the media often only highlights the negative aspect of off-field activity, there are plenty of players and coaches who spend a considerable amount of time off the field doing charity work, promoting foundations, going into the community, or creating a cause of their own. Whenever I have kids, I want them to share my passion in sports, particularly football. If they don't, I will love them just the same, but for those growing with their kids right now, I will raise the question: Whose uniform do you let your child walk around wearing? Lost in much of the discussion over which team is the best of the decade is just how much more successful quarterbacks have been at passing the ball as the decade has worn on. Rule changes, advances in medicine, and a change in the organizational philosophies of NFL teams have led to a league in which passing the football is as efficient as it has ever been. The adage that "there's three things that can happen when you pass and two of them are bad" only applies to high school football these days, as NFL teams are finding it easier to complete their passes. There are any number of ways to look at quarterback play statistically, but for the purposes of this article, I'll keep it simple and use a formula we're all familiar with: quarterback rating. Week Ten of the NFL saw some changes made when the week was over. After being cut by the Chiefs, Larry Johnson was recently signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals already have another castoff in Cedric Benson, who has energized his career in Cincinnati. If Johnson follows the same route as Benson has, who had trouble with the Chicago Bears and has been trouble-free with the Bengals, Johnson too could find himself playing more and not criticized as much. But, it's all up to Johnson's desire to change for the better. Also, the first coaching change finally happened in 2009 with the firing of Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron. Jauron never had success in Buffalo and the team was a mess this season at 3-6 with Terrell Owens, so management felt a change was needed. Jauron will probably end up back as a defensive coordinator somewhere in the NFL, a spot where he should stay.
