Denver Broncos: Keys to The Game Against The Pittsburgh Steelers

  1. Pressure, Pressure, Pressure
The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL. They rank fifth in yards per game and have a talented QB and receivers. The Broncos need to disrupt this passing game if they plan on shutting down the Steelers.
If the Broncos can put pressure on Ben Roethlisberger and not give him enough time for his receiver's routes to develop, it would go a long way towards shutting down the Steelers aerial game. It might even force a few turnovers.
Mike Nolan is sure to have a bunch of blitzes dialed for this game and hopefully the Broncos defensive players will be able to wrap up Big Ben and take him down before he gets the ball out to the likes of Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes.

  2. Establish the Run
This is going to be a tough task for the Denver Broncos. Pittsburgh has the best run defense in the NFL and some of the league's most physical defenders.
If the Broncos can establish the run with Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers

Aerial attacks could settle Monday Night showdown

DENVER—It's premature to label this a preview of the AFC championship game, but if tonight's game between the Steelers and Broncos doesn't get you pumped you might want to check yourself for a pulse.
The defending Super Bowl champion Steelers (5-2) have won four in a row and come off a bye week. The Broncos (6-1) are hoping to rebound from their first loss of the season. They'll be playing on a Monday Night Football stage before a nationwide audience.
"If you like challenges, this one has just about everything you're looking for," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "All we need is Howard Cosell."
Here are five factors that will help determine tonight's outcome:

  1. The Steelers' offense. It hasn't exactly transformed itself into Air Arians, but after being known as a running team for so many years Pittsburgh suddenly is filling the air with passes. The Steelers have the fifth-ranked passing offense (276 yards per game)—Ben Roethlisbeger has a 102.6 passer ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos

America's Team? Dallas Cowboys Can Keep That Moniker

First and foremost, allow me to explain that I in no way, shape or form expect to make any friends out of Dallas Cowboys fans from this article. But I digress, I have a duty to call them like I see them. For all those who disagree, I look forward to your intelligent debate that shall stem from this article in the comments section, so have away at it.
There are 32 teams in the NFL, every single one of them are based in the United States of America. Only one, however, has been called America's Team. Unless you've been living under a rock since 1978, then you know that this team is the Cowboys.
To actually put forth an intelligent argument for or against the Cowboys having this moniker, once must journey back into NFL history and learn just why the Cowboys have been dubbed as such.
Whilst narrating a 1978 highlight film for the Cowboys season, now NFL Films Vice President Bob Ryan needed something catchy. He coined the term America's Team due to the excessive crowds seen at Cowboys home games and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys

The Denver Broncos Vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers: Anecdotes from a Rich Rivalry

It's an interesting history, and in many ways these two franchises have paralleled each other throughout.

The overall record in the match-up between the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers currently belongs to the orange and blue.

This is a rags-to-riches story for both franchises however, and one of the NFL's richer and less glorified rivalries.
NFL Week Nine Predictions

Last week's record: 9-4
Overall record: 82-34
Lock of the Week: 5-for-8

  Washington (2-5) @ Atlanta (4-3)
Atlanta looked pretty good in their loss last week to the Saints while the Redskins haven't looked good all year. Atlanta's offense won't look as good as most people will expect it to look because Washington's defense is better than most think, but Atlanta will still win easily.
Atlanta wins, 30-18 (Lock of the Week)

  Arizona (4-3) @ Chicago (4-3)
Arizona has been very inconsistent this year, which means they should look great here after last week's loss. The Bears seem to have no idea on whether they want to be a good team or a bad team and Jay Cutler has been wildly inconsistent all year. Kurt Warner had a bad outing last week, so look for him to throw a few touchdowns and lead the Cards to a win.
Arizona wins, 23-17

  Baltimore (4-3) @ Cincinnati (5-2)
The Baltimore defense is embarrassed at how they played during the last drive a few weeks ago ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers

Ryan Clark may be saying everything he needs to say with his growing silence.

The Pittsburgh Steelers safety is usually one of the team's most talkative players, but he is saying little as it becomes increasingly likely he won't play Monday in Denver due to a rare blood condition that nearly caused him to die after playing there two years ago.

Nearly all of Clark's teammates are urging him to skip the game.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Ryan Clark, Denver Broncos

Have you ever noticed how much the Pittsburgh Steelers look like the Iowa Hawkeyes? On numerous occasions, I get mixed up between the Jayhawks and the Giants.

What about when two teams from nearby locations played great a season ago, but are in the tank the next year.

Whether it's slight or significant, there's always a College Football team out there that reminds us of a team in the NFL.

Feel free to give a list of your own, or leave any questions or comments you may have.

Pittsburgh Steelers Film Study: Forget Stats, Defense Was Great Against Vikings

Numbers can lie. Want an example?
In 2002, the Pittsburgh Steelers faced off with the Houston Texans for the first time. In that game, the Steelers generated over 400 yards of offense. They allowed less than 100 on defense.
They also lost 24-6.
So, when Brett Favre passed for 334 yards against the Steelers two Sundays ago, was it a case of numbers that lie or was it a case of numbers that reveal?
The numbers lie.
First of all, look at the rest of Favre's statistical line for the day. He threw 50 times, completing 33 passes. Only three passes went longer than 25 yards. He was also sacked four times, threw a costly interception in the red zone, and lost a fumble near the red zone.
So, Favre averaged 10.1 yards per completion and 6.68 yards per attempt. Those numbers are well within the realm of respectability for a defense. No one likes to allow 300+ passing yards, but in this case, it was exactly what the team needed to do.
Second, if you are a defensive coordinator preparing for the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson

The Denver Broncos' first loss under rookie coach Josh McDaniels produced plenty of problems that need fixing and one big injury they'll have to deal with.

McDaniels said right tackle Ryan Harris won't play against Pittsburgh next week after sustaining a toe injury in the Broncos' loss at Baltimore. McDaniels was still trying to learn the extent of Harris' injury.

Harris, a third-year pro from Notre Dame, has started 22 consecutive games for one of the league's best offensive lines.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Josh McDaniels, Pittsburgh Steelers, Ryan Harris

Steelers Keys to Success Against Broncos are Not the Same as Ravens.

I read an article here on Bleacher this morning, that I have to take issue with. Nick DeWitt is a writer that I respect for his writings, but on this story, I think he is dead wrong.
Mr. Dewitt thinks that the Steelers need to play the way the Baltimore Ravens did against the Denver Broncos next Monday Night in order to be successful. I think the Steelers need to play like the Steelers to be successful.
The Baltimore Ravens led the Broncos 6-0 at half time, then scored on the opening kick off in the second half. If the Steelers are to be successful against the Broncos, a 6-0 half time lead is not the way to do it.
I realize that some Steelers fans are having a hard time accepting the fact that this Steelers team is no longer the Steelers team we grew up watching. We are not a run to set up the pass team, we pass to set up the run.
The Denver Broncos are going to be playing at home next week, on the national stage that is Monday Night football. The crowd is going to be loud, and hungry after ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens

Here is how I had the teams rated in my preseason rankings along with their predicted records, and where they are now. The grade I am giving is not for the team, but for my predictions.

  Pittsburgh Steelers , 13-3 / 5-2
The Steelers were my top seeded AFC Team. Other than the two losses in the closing minutes of their week two and three games, the Steelers have handled most teams they have played.
  Grade: A

  New England Patriots , 12-4 / 5-2
The biggest question about the Patriots was, would Tom Brady come back as Tom Brady? Brady is playing most of the time like the Tom Brady of old, especially in the last few weeks. The question is now, can the defense continue to play at the level to win championship? Remains to be seen.
  Grade: A

  Tennessee Titans , 10-6 / 1-6
For me to be correct, the Titans are going to have to run the table, which just isn't going ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers

Steelers-Broncos: Follow in the Ravens' Footsteps for Once

It's usually unthinkable for the Steelers to follow in the footsteps of rival Baltimore.
But, just this once, it's imperative that the Steelers do just that.
Are the Steelers a better team than the Ravens? Statistics aside, the Steelers have a much better defensive front than Baltimore and also have a more cohesive secondary. Offensively, the team is also much more consistent, with the Steelers possessing better threats in the passing game.
But the Steelers will now face another tough test, coming off their bye to face the surprising but suddenly human Denver Broncos on the road.
Denver is human because Baltimore figured out how to finally solve the mystery that had allowed the Broncos to dominate opponents through the first six games.
Now Pittsburgh must take the Ravens' gameplan and execute it just as effectively.
Here's a look at how Pittsburgh can improve to 6-2 and firmly assert itself once again as a threat in the AFC:

  On Offense
The Broncos had trouble with Ray Rice, a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens

Ravens Crush Broncos, Keep Pace with AFC North Leaders

Prior to their week eight matchup against the Denver Broncos, the Baltimore Ravens were riding a three-game losing streak.
That sent them from undefeated and alone in first place in the AFC North to third with only the lowly Browns trailing.
With the Steelers and Bengals having the week off, the Ravens stood at 1.5 games back of both. A loss to the Broncos would have put the Ravens two games back with nine to play.
Their season would be far from over had they lost to the Broncos, but would the team mentally have been able to come back from a four-game losing streak? That is a question that will never have to be answered.
From the opening kickoff, the Ravens were obviously the better team. All the talk about the undefeated Broncos had a big bucket of water thrown on it.
Offense, defense, special teams, and even coaching were better.
I said it before the season, and I will say it again in the middle: The AFC North is going to have three teams in the playoffs this year.
The only question ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals

Steelers Bye Week: The Bye Week Blues!

I woke up this morning like every other Sunday morning. I came down stairs, had breakfast, grabbed the newspaper (sports page and comics; they are all that matter), and headed down to the man cave to watch the NFL Pre game.
I signed in to my Bleacher Fantasy Football league, and reality set in. The Steelers are not playing today.
I knew the Steelers are on their bye week. Every team needs one, and with the injuries to the team, Timmons and Polamalu needing another week to recover, the Steelers bye week is coming at a perfect time.
So, I turned on Sunday NFL Countdown on ESPN, and there are a lot of good games on tap for today.
Vikings vs. Packers to start should be fun to watch. If nothing else, to see the crowd reaction when Brett Favre takes the field for the first time.
Broncos vs. Ravens is an interesting matchup. I never root for the Ravens, but as a Steelers fan, part of me needs the Broncos to lose a game or two other than against us for playoff seeding. Still, I don't think I have ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles

Bye Breakdown: The Good and Bad for the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are resting, healing, and enjoying a well-deserved break after going 5-2 before the bye week.
The Steelers enter this respite with a four-game winning streak and a defense that's beginning to play like the one we've come to know and love.
But not everything is picture-perfect. Like any team, even good ones, there are some weaknesses, chinks in the armor if you will, to go along with their strengths.
Here's an analysis of the good and bad Pittsburgh has displayed so far in 2009.

  The Good
1. The Defense
Even with all-everything Troy Polamalu missing four games and DE Aaron Smith out for the season, the Steelers defense is playing at a high level.
Pittsburgh is No. 8 in total defense giving up 291 yards per game, down from last season's 237.2 yards and the No. 1 ranking.
The run defense has been excellent, allowing only 76.6 yards a game, second in the league. The passing defense is rated 15th in the NFL, which dropped the overall rating down, due in no ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Rashard Mendenhall, Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Tomlin

Is the Ravens' Game Against the Broncos a Must-Win?

What a difference a month makes!
Four weeks ago, the Ravens were 3-0, sitting atop of the AFC North, ahead of the upstart Bengals and the hated Steelers. There was talk about dynasty , and how the Ravens were the front runners for the AFC North.
One month later, the Ravens trail the Bengals and Steelers, by 1.5 games, and a loss Sunday against the Broncos would put them two games back of both teams.
Even though they are now in third place in the division, the Ravens still have a chance to catch the Bengals and Steelers, but they are going to have to play their best football from here on out.
Of the three teams, the Ravens have the hardest schedule remaining. Even though their offense has improved dramatically, their defense is no longer what it once was, now regularly getting torched in the passing game.
But the real concern for the Ravens would come should they lose to the Broncos. If the Ravens lose Sunday, they are going to be playing the rest of the season for a wild-card playoff ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers

Vikings' Pro Bowl CB Winfield out vs. Packers

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield will not play on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

The Pro Bowler was listed as out in Friday's injury report. He also missed last week's game against Pittsburgh because of the injured right foot.

Coach Brad Childress says he saw Winfield make progress throughout the week. But the Vikings have a bye after Green Bay, so they could be playing it safe with one of their most important defenders.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Antoine Winfield, Pittsburgh Steelers, Brad Childress, Pro Bowl

The doubleheader on Fox averaged a 14.1 rating and 29 share and 23.5 million viewers, a record audience for the network. The rating was the third highest since Fox started airing the NFL in 1994.

The early, regional game - in which most markets saw the Super Bowl champ Steelers hand Brett Favre and the Vikings their first loss - set ratings and audience records for the slot with a 11.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl, Pittsburgh Steelers, Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings

NFL: Enough With The Throwbacks

It's getting ugly out there.
Literally.
The Pittsburgh Steelers do it right. They wear their throwback jerseys, which are nowhere near as offending to the eyes as some that we've seen, a couple times a year during important home games.
San Diego modified their throwbacks and adopted them as their regular uniform. It's hard to argue with the fact that they are the best looking uniforms in the league today.
For some teams, however, it's been a while since we've seen their regular uniforms.
Denver continues to trot out the runner up for the ugliest throwbacks ever (last year's Blue and Yellow Eagles incarnations were the worst by far) at home and on the road (see photo).
New England and Tennessee have been wearing theirs often too. Some confused fans are probably wondering if the Houston Texans had finally decided to do the decent thing and bring back the Houston Oilers.
No, it's just the hapless Titans.
It isn't bad enough that Seattle trotted out hideous green jerseys that made the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers

Recommendation For Browns Fans to Get Thru 2009, Watch the Bengals

To begin, I may get a lot of hatred by fellow Browns fans for writing this article, but if the Browns cannot win the division (and it looks that way), then the Steelers or Ravens should not either.
Browns fans, what would be worse?
The Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, or the other Ohio team the Cincinnati Bengals winning the AFC North division?
