The Most Underrated Players on the Teams who won't make the Playoffs

This picture is not of Deangelo Williams, in fact, this is a picture of Jarius Byrd taking down the Pro Bowl running back. A rookie from Oregon, he currently has more interceptions than he has starts, (7 starts to 8 interceptions.) There are many unheralded players like Jarius who are having excellent years, but who aren't getting any publicity because they're playing for teams that are surrounded with disappointment. These are the teams who won't make the playoffs, (I determined the teams who won't make the playoffs are those with currently 3 or less wins.) These are the ten Most Underrated Players on the ten teams not going to the playoffs.
Zorn says Davis's work is paying off

In two games as the Redskins' starting tight end, Fred Davis has six catches for 76 yards. He also had eight receptions - including his first career touchdown - and 78 yards during the Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in which Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley was injured. Davis's blocking has improved and that's an encouraging development for the Redskins, who have used more two-tight-end formations in the running game since Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels and right guard Randy Thomas suffered season-ending injuries. Davis is coming along nicely, Coach Jim Zorn said. "Every week, actually, I should say, every day, he just continues to improve, and it started with that bye week the time that he spent out there working," Zorn said. "But then each week, I think after the first game, he really saw ... the speed, how tough it was going to be,

Caronlina Panthers Loss To Miami Dolphins Not Just Another Loss

The Carolina Panthers came into the season with a lot of expectations. After coming off a 12-4 season and losing to Arizona in the playoffs, everyone thought Carolina would look to rebound and have a strong season.
With one of the best two-back running systems in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart and a dangerous receiver in Steve Smith, this offense hardly looked like it could be stopped.
They proved us wrong.
For the Panthers, this season has been nothing short of disappointing. After starting the season 0-3, Carolina won the next four out of six before losing last night to Miami 24-17. The Panthers record now stands at 4-6.
But, I'll cut them some slack. They do have the second hardest schedule this season, and have top players to injuries like Pro Bowl left tackle Jordan Gross and linebacker Thomas Davis, who was having a Pro Bowl type season. Not to mention Jake Delhomme's 14 interceptions.
After their loss last night to Miami, Carolina's playoff hopes have taken a big hit, and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, Pro Bowl, Wild Card

Haynesworth a game-time decision for Sunday

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park. "Albert was on the treadmill today working," Zorn said. "It'll be a game-time decision whether he can go or not. I'm going to lean more toward having him up [active], seeing what he can do. "I'm an optimistic person and I'm definitely going to wish that for myself with Albert because we'd love to have him on the field. But it will be a game-time situation."

Who Is the Best Running Back in Philadelphia Eagles History?

News today is that Brian Westbrook will make a full recovery from his second concussion in three weeks, and while everyone is talking as if he'll return to the field (perhaps in time for a hoped-for playoff), I'm just happy to hear the man isn't looking at reduced capabilities. And since I'm still not convinced that I'm ever going to see him in the active laundry again, it seems as good a time as any to see how he stacks up for the title of Best RB in Franchise History. Realistically, there are three choices for the honor. The first is more or less unknown to modern fans, but given that he's got infinitely more rings than the others, that might not be fair.

Steve Van Buren 8 years, 5,860 career rushing yards, 69 TDs on the ground. Led the league in rushing and rushing touchdowns in four different years. Played both ways, as usual for the era, with 9 career interceptions as a secondary player.
Added another 523 yards on the occasional screen pass, and scored 3 TDs through the air, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl

Panthers WR Smith OK after minor crash (AP)

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith will play against the Miami Dolphins after being involved in a car accident on the way to the game. A team official said somebody "bumped into" Smith's car Thursday, but said Smith was able to continue to drive to the stadium and is fine. The four-time Pro Bowl pick has 38 catches for 512 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Carolina Panthers, Steve Smith, Miami Dolphins, Pro Bowl

Injury-depleted Saints sign Pro Bowl CB McAlister

The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran cornerback Chris McAlister.

The 32-year-old former Ravens star has been elected to the Pro Bowl three times in his 10-year career but missed most of last season with a right knee injury and was released by Baltimore last February.

McAlister started for Baltimore's Super Bowl winner in 2001 and ranked third on the Ravens' career list with 26 interceptions when he was released.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Pro Bowl, Chris McAlister, Super Bowl

Giants losing at the Pro Bowl polls

The Giants sent seven players to the Pro Bowl last season. But it doesn’t seem likely they’ll be able to duplicate that feat this year.

In fact, in the first round of fan voting released today by the NFL, only one Giants player leads in the balloting at his position — punter Jeff Feagles.

Worse, in the 19 separate position categories, only eight Giants players appear in the top five.

It’s impossible to tell how big a role the four-game losing streak has played in NFL fans’ opinion of Giants players, but obviously it hasn’t helped.

Fans voting, of course, is only part of the way Pro Bowl rosters are determined. Ballots from fans, coaches and players count for one-third each. Fans can vote on NFL.com until the conclusion of the Monday night game on Dec. 21. The full teams will be announced on Dec. 29.

With about a month to go in the voting, here are the only Giants in the top five at their positions in the NFC:

• QB Eli Manning (fourth among ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Pro Bowl, Jeff Feagles

Steelers star safety Troy Polamalu hasn't been ruled out of Sunday's game at Kansas City despite injuring his left knee for the second time this season, though coach Mike Tomlin says he is questionable at best.

Polamalu, a five-time Pro Bowl player, missed four games earlier this season with a medial collateral ligament tear. He strained the posterior cruciate ligament while tackling running back Cedric Benson on Cincinnati's first possession Sunday and did not return.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, Troy Polamalu, Mike Tomlin, Pro Bowl, Cedric Benson

Yoder steps up again with another TD

Coming into last week's game at Atlanta, Redskins tight end Todd Yoder -- who typically plays on special teams -- had five touchdown catches in a 10-year career. Now, after he put the Redskins on the board with a two-yard scoring reception from Jason Campbell, he has two in two weeks. Yoder also caught a three-yard scoring pass against the Falcons. Yoder is getting more chances to play on offense now that Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley is out after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his ankle. "I'm just happy to help us win," Yoder said. "I've got a little opportunity with Chris being hurt to get in more and get more involved. Hopefully, as things go, I get more opportunities."

Jay Cutler Sends Lletter to Josh McDaniels (Humor)

(Writer's Note: This is a humor column. Jay did NOT actually send this letter to Josh McDaniels. I know B/R readers are smart enough to figure this out, but I can't speak for the whole Internet.)
Dear Josh,
As much as I don't want to say "I told you so..."
Oh what the hell, I'll say it anyway: I TOLD YOU SO!!!! NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH, NYAH, NYAH!!!
How does it feel, dummy? You ran me out of town and look what happened! Look at how bad you are! Don't you miss me? I could have easily gotten you two or three more wins. I have a much better arm than John Elway, let alone that limp noodle Kyle Orton you got in place of me!
Wait a second. Ron Turner just came in told me your record. You're 6-0? Really? Oh well, it's all luck anyway and you haven't really played anyone! I'm better than Tom Brady , Tony Romo , and Philip Rivers all put together anyway! I'm the best there is!
Oh, hold on there. Kyle Orton? He has a 100.1 quarterback rating and I only have ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Josh McDaniels, Jay Cutler, Minnesota Vikings, Pro Bowl, Super Bowl

Believe It: Three Things the Broncos Can Do To Make a "Super Run"

Crazy, off your rocker, cracked, and insane.
Those are the words I would use if you had told me in August that the Broncos would be 6-0 going into their bye, and talk of a Super Bowl run, let alone a playoff berth, would be discussed with a straight face.
But here we are.
Most fans almost always hold out hope at the start of every season that this could be "the year" for their team, but it was especially hard for Broncos fans to even give consideration to such thought this year. Their stalwart head coach was gone, as was their young Pro Bowl franchise quarterback, and their star wide receiver was throwing a temper tantrum that would make Terrell Owens proud. The defense was rebuilding in a new scheme under yet another defensive coordinator. Broncos fans were bracing for the worst year the team had in recent memory.
But here we are.
The team is 6-0 going into their bye. Rookie head coach Josh McDaniels looks like a genius, and the new ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Pro Bowl, San Diego Chargers, Super Bowl, Green Bay Packers

Broncos Report Card: Week Four

Second verse, same as the first.
That would be how the outside world views the Denver Broncos after yet another win, propelling them to 4-0 on the season, a season in which not many people expected the Broncos to win more than five games.
The Broncos are 80 percent of the way there, with 12 games yet to be played. But at the rate head coach Josh McDaniels has his team playing, they won't be stopping at five or maybe even eight. Now on to the grades for Week Four.

  Passing Offense
Kyle Orton got off to a horrendous start, but he didn't turn the ball over. He was under siege by the Dallas defense the first portion of the game, but in typical Orton fashion he picked himself up and won the game without making a careless mistake.
Major kudos go to Ryan Clady for setting a record by not allowing a sack in 20 straight games, and the fact that those are the first 20 starts in his career is even more remarkable. The Broncos have a keeper here.

Rinehart may get another start at guard

It appears that Chad Rinehart might be back in as the starting right guard and Will Montgomery out, a league source said. We'll ask Coach Jim Zorn about this after practice, but even if Rinehart returns to the starting lineup, it might not make much difference. The unit has been in disarray since Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels and starting right guard Randy Thomas went down with season-ending injuries, and Rinehart, a third-round pick in the 2008 draft, already failed in his first opportunity to inspire confidence.

Fourth Quarter Woes the Fault of Reid

Reid watches McNabb throw too often in the fourth. A lot is being made of the Eagles fourth quarter woes after their loss to the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, but too much of the blame is heading Donovan McNabb's way. While the quarterback does deserve some blame for an offense not being able to score, everyone is stopping one step too short. If you want to find the real culprit for the Eagles' offensive woes in the fourth quarter, look no further than Andy Reid. More specifically, take a look at his play-calling sheet. The problem with the Eagles in the fourth quarter is the lack of ball control. They don't focus on controlling the clock for the entire game, so they can't be expected to just turn it on when they need to. It's a mentality that the play-caller instills by committing to running the ball, and Reid never has or never will be that way. Reid's offense is focused around putting up so many points early that it becomes impossible for the opposing offense to come back. He ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Pro Bowl, Donovan McNabb

Eagles' Team MVPs at Halfway Point

After eight weeks of the season, the Eagles are sitting at 5-3 overall with a 2-1 record in the division. It's not a bad place to be at the halfway point, but the Eagles, as well as their fans, understand that 7-1 bounced off this team's fingertips. A combined eight points between their two losses is the only thing keeping them from having complete control of the NFC East, but they're still in the mix and with a number of players getting healthy and are in good position to make a push in the back eight of the season. There are a number of players who have stepped up in all three phases of the game, allowing this team be in the position they're in now. So, let's take a look at this team's MVPs at the halfway point of 2009. Offense: DeSean Jackson, WR Jackson has already doubled his number of receiving touchdowns from his rookie season with four and two more touchdowns—one on the ground and one on a punt return—to bring him to six total. Twenty-six receptions for 530 yards and four ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Pro Bowl
