2009 Steelers: No Closers, Lose Tough One to Ravens

If the season ended today, the 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers could sum up their season in three words: failure to close.
In Glengarry Glen Ross , Alec Baldwin's character says, "ABC: Always Be Closing." These Steelers failed to close once again, losing a tough one to the Baltimore Ravens 20-17 in overtime.
For the fourth time this season, the Steelers blew a fourth quarter lead and lost the game. The Steelers, now at 6-5, are pretty much just fighting for a wild card spot which they still could not earn even if they win out and finish 11-5 a la the New England Patriots last season. It is a possibility that the Steelers and Steeler Nation needs to come to grips with quickly.
Some observations from tonight's game:

  The Good
1. Dennis Dixon played OK given the situation. Yes he did throw the back-breaking interception to Paul Kruger in overtime and just looked lost in OT period, but you have to give the second-year QB his due. He played within himself. He did not take any sacks, and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Dennis Dixon, Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Tomlin, Rashard Mendenhall

The Biggest Game Of Rahsard Mendenhalls Career? Yes It Is!

This is what he was drafted for.
Rashard Mendenhall was selected by the Steelers in the first round of the 2008 draft to be the battering ram of the offense. It was not until the fifth game of this year that he took that role seriously, and is coming into his own in the Steelers back field.
No longer is there a question as to who the Steelers feature back is. Willie Parker is on the bench, Mewelde Moore is the third down back, and Mendenhall is the man.
Against the Ravens Sunday night, Mendenhall is going to have to continue his growth as the starter, and control the Ravens defense if the Steelers are going to have a chance to steal the victory in Baltimore.
Ben Roethlisberger is inactive due to "concussion like" symptoms from a knee to the head against the Chiefs last week. Charlie Batch has a broken left wrist, and the start will go to second year pro Dennis Dixon, his first.
For Dixon to be successful, the Ravens are going to have to stop the run. That is where Mendenhall comes in.
