Giants forecast Big Blue skies

Remarkably, none of the Giants' heartbreaking losses this season has shaken the team's belief that they are still a true Super Bowl contender. And even though they're sliding into their bye week on a four-game losing streak after a 21-20 loss to the Chargers on Sunday, the Giants insisted there's still plenty of time for them to turn this crumbling season around.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Super Bowl, San Diego Chargers

Ignorance of Eagles Fans Shines On Day After Loss

They say ignorance is bliss, but in the circle of Eagles fans it's become more of an epidemic. This city used to be populated with the most knowledgeable of fans who could back up their beliefs with real football insight and nothing but a love for the Eagles. Whether they agreed or disagreed with the coaches or management, someone could always look forward to a well-informed discussion with an Eagles fan. Unfortunately, those days are long gone. The city has become populated with people who wear midnight green with more of a mob mentality than an actual love for the game and for their team. Don't get me wrong, the passion is there, and it's there in abundance. Unfortunately the knowledge of the game has been completely thrown out the window. When the Eagles are winning, the city is ready to put Andy Reid in the Hall of Fame and already have their Super Bowl parties planned. The Eagles are the best team in the league, and there's no one who will tell them otherwise. However, lose a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid, Donovan McNabb, Super Bowl

Vince Lombardi is going to Broadway. The Hall of Fame coach's life will be brought to life in a stage production based on the best-selling book "When Pride Still Mattered," by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss. Lombardi was a pioneering coach who led the Green Bay Packers to the first two Super Bowl titles.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Vince Lombardi, Hall of Fame, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl

Stupor Bowl! Bolts blast Big Blue in final minute

What Antonio Pierce called a "Super Bowl" for the Giants and what Tom Coughlin called "a one-game season" came down to one awful drive for the defense. What had been a remarkable comeback turned into another chapter in this disaster of a season, and a heart-breaking, 21-20 loss.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Antonio Pierce, Super Bowl, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin, San Diego Chargers

Game Day: Chargers (4-3) at Giants (5-3)

Do you get the feeling that there’s a big game going on at Giants Stadium today?

Must be because there’s “a sense of urgency” (Justin Tuck) for this “Super Bowl” (Antonio Pierce) of a game, which is really a “one-game season” (Tom Coughlin).

Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket (sorry, I was running out of cliches that hadn’t been used yet).

But there’s a good reason. There are only seven games left in the season after today, which means they’re running out of time to stop this three-game slide. Plus, things could get very ugly around here very soon. The World Series ended and New York awoke from its Yankee hangover and said “Holy cow! What happened to the Giants?!?” A loss today and we’ll have two long weeks to analyze that question. Two weeks of psycho-analyzing Eli Manning, Bill Sheridan, Brandon Jacobs and Tom Coughlin. Two weeks of dissecting Manning’s mechanics. Two weeks of digging ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers, Tom Coughlin, Antonio Pierce, Super Bowl

Cowboys vs Eagles Preview: Romo, "It's Like A Playoff Game"

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional.
When these two teams last met, it was the final week of the 2008 season, with playoff implications on the line for both teams. That game ended with a 44-6 Philly win, which the Eagles rode all the way to the NFC Championship Game. This time, the stakes aren't as high, but first place in the NFC East awaits the winner.
"I've got some good news and some bad news," says Tony Romo. "I'm treating this like a playoff game. That's good news for the Eagles and bad news for the Cowboys."
"As for rumors of a brewing controversy over me getting each of my receivers enough touches, well, that's nothing new to me. Heck, I can't tell you how many times last year I was accused of inappropriate 'touching.' Anyway, I'm not at all like Jessica Simpson — there's not enough of me to spread around."
With a win, the Eagles would not only take sole possession of first in the division, but they'd also proudly sport three consecutive wins over division opponents.

Chargers vs. Giants Preview: Draft Dodger

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional
Philip Rivers and Eli Manning will forever be linked by the 2004 NFL draft, in which Manning was selected first by the Chargers, then traded to the Giants for Rivers, whom the Giants selected fourth. The two young quarterbacks will meet in Giants Stadium on Sunday, with their respective teams heading in opposite directions—the Chargers have won two straight, while the G-Men have dropped their past three.
"Of course, everyone knows that Manning had publicly refused to play for the Chargers if they drafted him," Rivers said. "Well, you can stop the John Elway comparisons right there. Sure, they're both 'draft dodgers,' but until Eli can give an overrated coach two Super Bowl wins, he won't be mentioned in the same breath with Elway."
"Less than a month ago, the Giants were undefeated and topping the list of many power rankings. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. And we thought Plaxico Burress' fall from grace was quick. It seems the G-Men, like ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers, Eli Manning, Super Bowl, Plaxico Burress

New New York Giants Book Released: Making the Big Game

Enclosed is a message I received from a fellow Giant fan. This seemed like something fun to read about our Giants and the fans that dedicate themselves to their team.
"Hello, from Northern California- My name is Jeffrey Fekete and I am now connecting with Giants fans from around the U.S. following the publication of my book "Making The Big Game: Tales of an Accidental Spectator."
It's a part fan memoir and part unexpected road trip story (entirely true) that begins 10 days before kickoff of Super Bowl XLII and ends in the upper deck in Glendale AZ among life long Giants season ticket holders. My regional book tour in January that will make stops in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and just confirmed Miami, FL.

Anecdotes and a Rich History Between the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers

It's an interesting history and in many ways the history of these two franchise over a period of time have lived similarly in parallel.

The overall record in the match-up between the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers currently belongs to the orange and blue.

This is a rags to riches story of both franchises however and one of the NFL's richer and less glorified rivalries.
Head-to-head: Colts are NFL's better undefeated team

Super Bowl winner; MVP: Peyton Manning is the No. 1 reason to believe in the Colts.

We enter NFL Week 9 with two unbeaten teams -- the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints . This week, both teams are at home for division games; the Colts play host to the Texans , and the Panthers visit New Orleans . In preparation for the games, we posed the question the SN experts Clifton Brown and Vinnie Iyer: Which is the better team?

Brown touts the Colts . Here's why Iyer's pick is the Saints:

With all due respect to the dominant team in the NFC, the Saints, the Colts are the remaining undefeated to trust most down the stretch and come playoff time. One word comes to mind: experience.

Peyton Manning has seen everything and is playing some of the best football of his illustrious career. The talented offense, buoyed by an injection of youth, is smooth and methodical in how it moves the ball every week.

On defense, they have the familiar ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl

Arizona Cardinals' Adjustment No.1: Cultivate Intensity

People have asked me, what adjustments do the Cardinals need to make for the second half of the season to win the NFC West? There is only one. They need to cultivate intensity. That's it.
You've seen it. We've all seen it. When this team plays with ferocity, they can flat out dominate.
This team needs a challenge in order to rise up to meet it, it is as simple as that. When no one gives them a chance of winning, it is as if they feel their manhood is being called into question and they come out playing inspired ball. It is when they are expected to win that they fall flat.
In fact it is so easy to analyze that it's laughable.
Look how well the Cardinals played in New York two weeks ago and compare that with how poorly they played vs. the Panthers the very next game. The difference is intensity. When they have it, they win. When they don't, they lose—and sometimes get blown out. It is as simple as that.
Where does it go I wonder? I am not sure, and the Cardinals themselves seem confused by ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Arizona Cardinals, Ken Whisenhunt, Super Bowl

Week 9 NFL Picks: Pandemia

While prepping this column, I started to feel untoward, and wound up losing consciousness. This happens far too often, considering my general lack of sleep and advancing age, but this was a different story; this was Full Blown Unwell. And two days before a scheduled flu shot. Just unfair, really. It turns out to have been more along the lines of food poisoning than contagion, in that no other symptoms arose, and there were no other fun moments (fevers, chills, etc.) to knock me off my feet. Mind-clouding pain and hurt were enough, really. But the real issue, in regards to the picks, is what happens next. If I have a hot week, is it The Unwell? Do I need to provoke ill health to get over the .500 mark in this endeavour? Of such drama are Week Nines made, as we're in the middle of everything, too far away from actual playoff importance but knee deep in Tremendous Fantasy Relevance. So let's get on with it, shall we? Before something else Untoward happens... And with that, on to the picks! ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl

Solutions Coming For Slumping New York Giants After Bye Week

After looking like the best team in the entire league at the end of Week 5, the New York Giants have come down to earth...and then some.
New York is heading into Week 9 as losers of three straight, with far from a gimme game against the 4-3 San Diego Chargers at the Meadowlands Sunday.
On the surface, it looks like the Giants have benefited from a soft opening schedule and been exposed by high-caliber teams such as the Saints, Cardinals and Eagles.
The offense and defense have been equally out of sync the past three weeks and fans are searching for answers before officially pressing the panic button.
After stepping back and looking at the big picture of the Giants season, there are two huge reasons for fans to be optimistic as the Giants head into their bye after this week's contest.

  1. The Return of Injured Defensive Stars
The loss of Micheal Boley in the Giants' Week 4 contest at Kansas City has proved to be extremely costly.
Boley was brought in by GM Jerry Reese to add speed ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Super Bowl

Countdown to Super Bowl XLIII 1/2

There apparently is no way to overstate the importance of this week’s game.

With the Giants riding a three-game losing streak and facing a schedule that just doesn’t get any easier, Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce has declared this “the Super Bowl for the New York Giants”.. That’s how much the Giants need a win this Sunday when the San Diego Chargers come to town.

“If there’s a must-win game of the season for the New York Giants, it’s this week,” Pierce said on Monday, during his paid weekly spot on WFAN . “This is the biggest game of the year. People said the Saints game was the Super Bowl? No. This is the Super Bowl for the New York Giants team. Going into our bye week we do not want to be going in on a four-game losing streak.”

Of course, if they do lose, they’ll get to play another “Super Bowl” against the Atlanta Falcons right after the bye. And if they lose that … well, you get the idea.

Will the real 'D' stand up?

Mike Mulligan: The progress of the Bears' defense has been treacherously betrayed by the man running it. The supposed improvement in the NFL rankings this year -- they jumped from 16th to 11th after beating woeful Cleveland on Sunday -- is nothing but a mirage. Sure, you take progress where you find it, even in a hollow run up the table to the defense's highest ranking since the Super Bowl year.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Cleveland Browns, Super Bowl, Chicago Bears

Jets get second shot at Wild Dolphins

Four days ago, Rex Ryan stood before his team and tossed a match on some kerosene-soaked logs. He mocked the Dolphins' victory celebration from three weeks ago, saying they behaved like it was a Super Bowl, and he read his players a postgame quote from Ronnie Brown.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Miami Dolphins, Rex Ryan, Super Bowl, Ronnie Brown, New York Jets

Impressions from Pac-10 media day

It was my first Pac-10 media day in over 10 years and I nearly forgot how much fun these things are. It's not as zany as the Super Bowl Media Day, which attracts knuckleheads and oddballs, but anytime you throw the conference's coaches and best players in a room sparks fly.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl

Panthers-Cardinals: Jake Delhomme, Number of the "Least"

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional.

After a dismal three-interception, no-touchdown performance in a 20-9 loss to the Bills, it appears Jake Delhomme's days as Carolina's starter are numbered.
Delhomme has struggled all year, and his downfall seemed to begin with last year's 33-13 playoff loss to the Cardinals, a game in which Delhomme threw five picks. The Panthers travel to Arizona probably seeking mercy more so than vengeance.
"It's safe to say Jake is not the most popular player on the team right now," says John Fox. "Heck, I fear for his safety as much as I do for my job. Only in Carolina is a 'roughing the passer' penalty called on the offense ."
"Statistically, Jake's having the worst season of his career. His passer rating is a lowly 56.5. I'm not sure, but that's got to be near the bottom, if not the worst, in the league. It's not 66.6, which is the 'number of the beast.' It's much worse. It's the 'number of the least.'"
The Cards have won two-straight, and are ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jake Delhomme, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Super Bowl

Sunday NFL games on FOX set ratings records

The Vikings-Steelers and Falcons-Cowboys games combined to help draw record television ratings last Sunday.

The doubleheader on Fox averaged a 14.1 rating and 29 share and 23.5 million viewers, a record audience for the network. The rating was the third highest since Fox started airing the NFL in 1994.

The early, regional game - in which most markets saw the Super Bowl champ Steelers hand Brett Favre and the Vikings their first loss - set ratings and audience records for the slot with a 11.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl, Pittsburgh Steelers, Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings

Week 8 NFL Picks: Who Are You Supposed To Be?

In theory, I love Halloween. The practice, however, is something entirely different. In theory, this gives me a cool opportunity to show my creativity -- hell, I make my living at the day job for that. In practice, I just don't have the time and money to do very cool costumes, and I always wind up having to to cobble together something on the cheap and portable, since sitting on a train for an hour and a half in a costume doesn't appeal. When I'm on the train, I want invisibility and the ability to do things like write this picks column, rather than getting into a conversation with someone about the motivations behind my costume choice, or how someone Just Doesn't Get It. I'm also not a guy who's ever felt good with makeup on, even in situations (TV, stage) that have demanded it. So I usually wind up in a mask, which gets hot and nasty fast. Fah. In theory, watching women try to outslut each other makes the holiday the very best day of the year. In practice, I live with my wife and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl

Super Bowl XXXVI: A Moment That Inspired a Nation

Super Bowl XXXVI was one of the most exciting Super Bowls of all time and also had one of the greatest endings. It had one of the biggest upsets of all time as the New England Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams even though they were 14-point underdogs.
While winning the Super Bowl meant a lot to the Patriots, their players, and their fans it meant even more to a country who was looking for some glimmer of hope.
Just five months before the game was played, terrorists hijacked four airplanes and crashed two of them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, completely destroying them and killing just under 3,000 people.
All of a sudden Americans felt vulnerable and were always worried when the next attack might happen. All sports were suspended for more than a week as people waited to hear the news of just what happened.
When football finally resumed the Patriots played their first game in New York against the Jets. Offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi came out of the tunnel carrying two ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady
