Strahan delivers a Giant pep talk

Michael Strahan's last pep talk to the Giants came on the sidelines during Super Bowl XLII, just before their championship-winning drive. The Giants (5-4) can only hope the little speech he gave Friday will have a similar effect.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Michael Strahan, New York Giants, Super Bowl

Who Is the Best Running Back in Philadelphia Eagles History?

News today is that Brian Westbrook will make a full recovery from his second concussion in three weeks, and while everyone is talking as if he'll return to the field (perhaps in time for a hoped-for playoff), I'm just happy to hear the man isn't looking at reduced capabilities. And since I'm still not convinced that I'm ever going to see him in the active laundry again, it seems as good a time as any to see how he stacks up for the title of Best RB in Franchise History. Realistically, there are three choices for the honor. The first is more or less unknown to modern fans, but given that he's got infinitely more rings than the others, that might not be fair.

Steve Van Buren 8 years, 5,860 career rushing yards, 69 TDs on the ground. Led the league in rushing and rushing touchdowns in four different years. Played both ways, as usual for the era, with 9 career interceptions as a secondary player.
Added another 523 yards on the occasional screen pass, and scored 3 TDs through the air, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl

Myers: Tom must be terrific again for Giants

Tom Coughlin had a great feel for his team during the Giants' unexpected Super Bowl run two years ago.
Mora, Seahawks Don't Have Time To Be "Optimistic"

At 3-6 the Seattle Seahawks have taken yet another step back since their Super Bowl run in 2005. Whether it be injuries, poor performance or losing key players the Seahawks have fallen from the elite of the NFL down to the level of the Bills, Redskins and Raiders.
After going 4-12 in 2008 the Seahawks decided not to rebuild but more retool and re boost to make a quick turn around, making it seem like nothing happened. Well that plan has completely backfired on Mora, Ruskell and the Seahawks organization.
Not only are the Seahawks 3-6 but they have looked horrendous on both sides of the ball this entire season. They have have two fluke blowouts against the St Louis Rams (1-7) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-4).
Outside of those two games the Seahawks have looked confused, lost and just down right depressing against the San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals (in Seattle), Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions.
The only game in which the Seahawks lost that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Seattle Seahawks, Matt Hasselbeck, Super Bowl, Nate Burleson, Justin Forsett, Jim Mora

Injury-depleted Saints sign Pro Bowl CB McAlister

The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran cornerback Chris McAlister.

The 32-year-old former Ravens star has been elected to the Pro Bowl three times in his 10-year career but missed most of last season with a right knee injury and was released by Baltimore last February.

McAlister started for Baltimore's Super Bowl winner in 2001 and ranked third on the Ravens' career list with 26 interceptions when he was released.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Pro Bowl, Chris McAlister, Super Bowl

View from here: Crucial decision was an error

Bill Belichick is no stranger to controversial or unpopular decisions. He chose Tom Brady over Drew Bledsoe in 2001. In Super Bowl XXXVI, instead of kneeling on the ball with 1:30 left and no timeouts and playing for overtime, he let a second-year quarterback fire away and set up the winning field goal. He cut starting safety Lawyer Milloy five ...

Is Wade Phillips the Dallas Cowboys Head Coach? Does it Matter?

"Everything rises and falls on leadership."
I do not know who first said that. I first heard it from a preacher named Lee Roberson, back in the '70s. Then, John Maxwell popularized it in more recent memory. Whoever said it, said it right.
All you can really add to it is, "Amen."
The Dallas Cowboys are a team in desperate need of a leader. Plenty of players have emerged as positive locker room and field leaders, not the least of which is Keith Brooking. But the dearth of leadership on the sideline is ominous and distressing to the Cowboys faithful.
Last weekend, before the Green Bay game, my wife and I went to dinner with her parents. For my father-in-law and me, the subject turned, as it often does, to the Dallas Cowboys. We were talking about this very subject: the dreadful state of the head coaching position.
Coming off that huge win in Philly, my father-in-law was optimistic and hopeful.
"You know, Gene," he said, "They don't really have a head coach. They have an offensive and a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Dallas Cowboys, Wade Phillips, Super Bowl

Pittsburgh Steelers Fans, Relax, Breath, It Happens

Today the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals. But do not fret; every team has its bumps in the road. There are still seven games to play this season.
The offensive play calling was very unimaginative, extremely predictable. That happens when receivers do not get open and the line has a rough day. If the team can't get at rhythm to it, it's doomed to predictability.
When the receivers, particularly Santonio Holmes, have terrible days and couldn't catch swine flu if they tried, it happens.
Ben Roethlisberger, I'm sure, would love to forget about this game. He definitely wasn't on point like we fans are accustomed to him being. Again, it happens. That's why the season is 16 games.
One thing I do know is that Roethlisberger always bounces back with a great game. Fortunately for the Steelers, the next game is against the hapless Chiefs. What better way to get passed a bad loss than a terrible team.
Hopefully Troy Polamalu won't be out for too ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Super Bowl, Ben Roethlisberger

Finally after 40 years of being pushed around and dominated by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals refused to be bullied any more. The Bengals beat the Steelers at their own game in their own stadium, relying on a defense that smothered Ben Roethlisberger and the Super Bowl champions by holding them to four field goals, and one big special teams play for an 18-12 victory Sunday that...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, Ben Roethlisberger, Super Bowl

Are the 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers Better Than the 2008 Champions?

Prior to the start of the 2008 season, no one was talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers. At least not in a good way. ESPN had the Steelers ranked at No. 7.
All the talk was about how the New England Patriots coming off a perfect regular season, and the talk was about the Patriots being able to repeat that feat. Who could blame them? The Patriots sported the easiest schedule in the NFL.
The Steelers, on the other hand, had the hardest schedule. Not just of the year, but the hardest schedule in nearly 30 years. There is no way the Steelers would be good enough to make it to Tampa Bay for Super Bowl XLIII.
After the first weekend of the NFL season, all of the talk started to change. Tom Brady went down to a torn ACL, and the race to Tampa was on for the rest of the teams in the NFL.
But still, the schedule was so hard, the Steelers would need a minor miracle to make it to the Super Bowl.
Maybe God is a Steelers fan, maybe the stars were aligned just right, or maybe, just maybe, the 2008 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall, Super Bowl

Silva Week 10 Waiver Wire Report

Passing Fancy

Following Alex Smith's four-turnover performance that led directly to a Titans win in Week 9, coach Mike Singletary did nothing but praise his starting quarterback. "Alex had only one play that was really on him," Singletary said Monday, pointing out that the other miscues were a result of the ball just taking "an unlucky bounce." Needless to say, Smith enjoys plenty of job security at the moment.

In another encouraging sign, the heretofore conservative 49ers rolled out 358 yards of offense while skewing toward the pass for the second straight week. "It was, unfortunately, one of the better offensive performances that I've seen since I've been here," Singletary said. "Take away the turnovers, and we have a chance to really have a good offensive game and have some excitement and momentum going forward." Since Smith and Michael Crabtree entered the starting lineup simultaneously, the Niners have shockingly morphed into a pass-first offense. With Vernon Davis emerging as a legit go-to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tennessee Titans, Jeff Fisher, Justin Gage, Kenny Britt, Super Bowl, Rob Bironas

NFL Week 10 Rankings

In August, Rashard Mendenhall was called "ordinary" by the Pittsburgh media. He finished September in Mike Tomlin's doghouse, with seven carries for the month. Now it's early November, and he's an every-week fantasy starter.

Mendenhall is a reminder of a few fantasy maxims. 1. Things change fast. It doesn't matter how ugly your starting lineup looks in Week 3 if it's peaking near playoff time. This year's Pierre Thomas, next month's Mendenhall, is still out there.

Second lesson: If you are going to gamble in fantasy drafts, gamble with youth at running back. Mendenhall went in drafts after Larry Johnson, who owners had hopes would bounce back for the third straight year. He went after Willie Parker, who we saw begin to collapse last year.

I ranked LaDainian Tomlinson out of the top-15 this year, which was met by cries that Rotoworld was giving up on the old star too fast. He was going to be healthy and turn it around! I did a poor job because LT2 wasn't rank him nearly low enough. No matter how ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Drew Brees, Super Bowl, New Orleans Saints, Jammal Brown, Reggie Bush, Marques Colston

Tecmo Super Bowl's 32 Greatest Players

Tecmo Super Bowl.

While today’s gamers worry about the stats on their Dez Bryant CAPs or their pretty custom tri-core PowerPC processor Xbox 360 that runs at 3.2GHz, we old fogies had it a bit different. We had to worry about stopping Bo Jackson with the Colts defense, or holding the Joe Montana to Jerry Rice connection from single handedly making us cry like little babies, all the while doing it with 8-bit graphics. Ah, those were the days.

To honor the NFL hitting the halfway point of the season, I put a list together of the 32 greatest players in Tecmo Super Bowl. You may disagree with my list, you may disagree with my observations, but you can’t disagree that Tecmo Super Bowl is the greatest football game of all time.

(Writer's Note: This is a humor column. Jay did NOT actually send this letter to Josh McDaniels. I know B/R readers are smart enough to figure this out, but I can't speak for the whole Internet.)
Dear Josh,
As much as I don't want to say "I told you so..."
Oh what the hell, I'll say it anyway: I TOLD YOU SO!!!! NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH, NYAH, NYAH!!!
How does it feel, dummy? You ran me out of town and look what happened! Look at how bad you are! Don't you miss me? I could have easily gotten you two or three more wins. I have a much better arm than John Elway, let alone that limp noodle Kyle Orton you got in place of me!
Wait a second. Ron Turner just came in told me your record. You're 6-0? Really? Oh well, it's all luck anyway and you haven't really played anyone! I'm better than Tom Brady , Tony Romo , and Philip Rivers all put together anyway! I'm the best there is!
Oh, hold on there. Kyle Orton? He has a 100.1 quarterback rating and I only have ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Josh McDaniels, Jay Cutler, Minnesota Vikings, Pro Bowl, Super Bowl

Believe It: Three Things the Broncos Can Do To Make a "Super Run"

Crazy, off your rocker, cracked, and insane.
Those are the words I would use if you had told me in August that the Broncos would be 6-0 going into their bye, and talk of a Super Bowl run, let alone a playoff berth, would be discussed with a straight face.
But here we are.
Most fans almost always hold out hope at the start of every season that this could be "the year" for their team, but it was especially hard for Broncos fans to even give consideration to such thought this year. Their stalwart head coach was gone, as was their young Pro Bowl franchise quarterback, and their star wide receiver was throwing a temper tantrum that would make Terrell Owens proud. The defense was rebuilding in a new scheme under yet another defensive coordinator. Broncos fans were bracing for the worst year the team had in recent memory.
But here we are.
The team is 6-0 going into their bye. Rookie head coach Josh McDaniels looks like a genius, and the new ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Pro Bowl, San Diego Chargers, Super Bowl, Green Bay Packers

A Tamed Stallion: Marshall No Longer a Bucking Bronco

  Originally published Oct. 14, 2009
Let's turn the clock back a little less than 50 days to Aug. 29.
Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall had just been suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, adding more salt to a still fresh wound for the Broncos . The team a few months earlier had traded their disgruntled franchise quarterback to the Chicago Bears , and now were dealing with their No. 1 receiver demanding a trip out of Denver.
Now fast froward to the present day.
The Broncos are the surprise of the NFL standing atop the AFC West with a perfect 5-0 record. Even more surprising is the fact that Marshall, of all people, has been the key player in the past two Broncos victories. Marshall made a spectacular run and catch for the go ahead touchdown against the Cowboys and just last Sunday scored the game-tying touchdown against the Patriots .
In other words, Marshall has gone from zero to hero among Broncos fans in less than 60 days. So what has changed?

Following The Yankees' Lead, Dallas Cowboys Could Be On The Verge

Cowboy fans, can this really be the year?
I'm not going to totally jump the gun on how far the Dallas Cowboys will go this season. In recent years, the team has looked strong in stretches but have faltered at year's end before flaming out in the playoffs, assuming they got there.
Racing to a fast 6-2 record with winnable games coming up against Green Bay, Washington and Oakland, the Boys could be looking at a six game winning streak heading into the home stretch. December has been a disaster for quarterback Tony Romo, but so far he has performed at a surprisingly high level, with better focus without feeling the pressure from Terrell Owens to throw him the damn ball.
Can this really be the year?
If there is any possible way to hold out hope that this is the year, then look no further than this year's version of the New York Yankees. Similarities between the Bronx Bombers and America's Team are eerie:

both opened up new facilities this year
both have maligned superstars who have ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Dallas Cowboys, Tony Romo, Super Bowl

Broncos Fans and McDaniels: They're Lovin' It

  Originally published Sept. 28, 2009
If the 2009 Denver Broncos were fast food, I would call them a "Happy Meal" thus far into the campaign. Pleasant. Satisfying. Fun. Making their fans, you know, happy.
Oh, and yes, I did mean those Denver Broncos.
Six months ago the Broncos were a franchise in turmoil. The team had fired its stalwart head coach, Mike Shanahan, who led to the franchise to its two Super Bowl titles. Then Denver replaced him with a 33-year-old offensive whiz kid, Josh McDaniels, who had never been a head coach at any level.
To make matters worse, franchise quarterback Jay Cutler was trying force his way out of town after hearing McDaniels and the team had listened to offers for another quarterback, presumably sending Cutler to another team.
Once Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Brandon Marshall suddenly demanded a trade, saying he didn't trust the Broncos. McDaniels had no choice but to suspend Marshall for a good chunk of the preseason for conduct ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Denver Broncos, Josh McDaniels, Super Bowl, Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler Vs Rex Grossman: You Be The Judge Bear Fans

On a night where the Chicago Bears defense actually kind of, sorta, in a small way showed up, it was the Chicago Bears offense that dropped the ball ... no pun intended.
And to be perfectly accurate, it was the Bears' quarterback again reminding everyone how poor that position has been for the past 20 years-plus.
Jay Cutler threw five (count 'em, five) interceptions and in doing so, he looked remarkably like the type of QB that led us to a Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, not to a Super Bowl title, but Rex Grossman did manage to navigate the Bears to the big game in 2006 despite some shoty numbers. Last night, Cutler was a spitting image of him.
Cutler still displayed the strong arm and big-play ability, much like Rex did, but his interceptions were awful and in very costly situations, all five being in 49er territory, including one at the one-yard line and one in the end zone as time expired.
The game resembled the four-interception game that Sexy Rexy had against the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears, Rex Grossman, Rex Ryan, Super Bowl

NFL Midseason Awards and Super Bowl Predictions

This has been a Clint Eastwood season: the good, the bad, and the ugly, with not much in between.
There is a top tier of teams in the league, then the group of mediocre teams, and then the downright ugly ones. The parity that used to exist in the NFL has left.
All right, time for some midseason awards. These are not predictions; they are simply based on performance so far, individually and how they affect the success of their team.

Offensive MVP: Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts
Manning is having a career year. He is on pace to throw for more yards this season than he ever has. When you have a résumé like Manning, and this is a career year, it must be a big year.
Tony Dungy out, no problem for Manning. He is obviously still the same ol' Manning we are used to seeing. Maybe even better. He has led the Colts to a solid 8-0 record with a big-time matchup with Tom Brady and the Patriots next Sunday.
Being in the top three in every major quarterback statistic and not having a bad ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Super Bowl

Top Ten NFC East Perfomers through Nine Weeks

Rivalries. Tradition. Hatred. (Expletive) you (expletive)-head.

These are words that most die hard NFL fans associate with one of the most historically intense and competitive divisions in the history of football: the NFC East.

The NFC East is so special because there really isn't one standout marquee rivalry. Some could argue Cowboys-Redskins, but are those games really any more intense than Giants-Eagles, or Eagles-Cowboys?

In a division that frequently doesn't have a losing team, a division that frequently sends three teams to the Super Bowl, there is absolutely no shortage of talent.

2009 is no different.

Without further ado, the top 10 performers in the NFC East through the first nine weeks of the 2009 season.
Chiefs Vs Raiders Preview: Talking "Smack"

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional.
The 1-7 Chiefs visit Oakland to face the 2-6 Raiders in a battle of AFC West rivals whose off-the-field issues have provided more drama than anything that's occurred on the field. The Chiefs released Larry Johnson, and allegations of a history of violence continue to dog Raider's head coach Tom Cable.
"As you've heard," says Al Davis, "Cable's ex-wife and a former girlfriend have alleged that he abused them. This news, coupled with Randy Hanson's charges that Cable punched him, certainly leaves the Raider organization with a black eye. For the eye-patched Raiders, that's two eyes obstructed, which would have to explain why no one could corroborate Hanson's story, even though several apparently witnessed it. It seems to be a Cable 'cabal,' of which I'm a part of.
"Now, Cable and I have discussed the abuse allegations at great length. By 'great length,' I mean it took us forever to address all of them. But I think we made progress. I'm from the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Oakland Raiders, Tom Cable, Al Davis, Kansas City Chiefs, Larry Johnson, Super Bowl

Eagles Vs Chargers Preview: Monkeys On The Backs

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional.
Two of the best quarterbacks never to have won a Super Bowl face off in San Diego, as Donovan McNabb leads the Eagle against Philip Rivers and the Chargers. Both teams are 5-3 and in second in their respective divisions.
"I guess Donovan and I both have 'monkeys' on our backs," says Philip Rivers. "We're both looking to rid ourselves of animals. Obviously, McNabb's had more success leaving wildlife behind, because he's left 'yak' on the field on numerous occasions."
"Now, before information gets skewed, let's just clarify that Lawrence Taylor was the 'L.T.' arrested a few days ago for leaving the scene of an accident. It wasn't LaDainian Tomlinson. It couldn't have been. Heck, LaDainian almost always stops on contact."
Without the versatility of Brian Westbrook, the Eagles' offense was simply "pedestrian" in last week's 20-16 loss to the Cowboys. That would explain why David Akers "walked" on to the field for three field goals, as the offense ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Donovan McNabb, San Diego Chargers, Super Bowl, Philip Rivers

Pittsburgh Steelers First Half Report Card

At my daughter's school, they send out mid-semester report cards, to let the parents know how their child is doing. Here is the Pittsburgh Steelers report card for the first half of the 2009 season.
    Quarter back - A+
Ben Roethlisberger is on pace for the best stistical season ever by a Steelers QB. That is right Bradshaw, time to step to the side.
Roethlisberger has already passed Bradshaw with having the most games with a passer rating over 100. Roethlisberger is starting to be recognized as the elite player he is, not just by Steeler fans, but by everyone.
    Running back - C
Not consistant enough yet to be better than a C. Rashard Mendenhall is starting to show why the Steelers drafted him in the first round. If he keeps up this pace, this grade could go up.
    Wide receivers - B
Hines Ward is still the man, and Santonio Holmes is drawing the other teams best corner. Limas Sweed brought this grade down, but rookie Mike Wallace is a possible RoY candidate.
    Tight end - B

Nothing seems elementary about Lovie Smith's job these days. A coach once lauded for taking his team to the Super Bowl now is vilified for coordinating a defense unable to stop anyone in recent weeks. "Yeah, it bothers me," defensive end Alex Brown said in defense of Smith.

Steelers want payback against Bengals

Throughout the 2009 NFL season, SI.com's Jeff Ritter will work with Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley to get his thoughts and observations on the NFL and take you behind the scenes with the Steelers. Woodley is in his third season and finished with a career-best 11.5 sacks in 2008 while helping Pittsburgh win a Super Bowl title. The 6-2 Steelers host the 6-2 Bengals on Sunday.

The Way Too Early NFL Playoff Picture and Super Bowl Prediction

It's the midway point in the NFL season, which means it's time to take a look at where the contenders stand and analyze how the playoff picture would unfold if the season ended today. Take a look at each conference's potential matchups with predictions and a Super Bowl winner at the halfway mark.
AFC Bye: Colts, Broncos Wild Card Round Chargers @ Steelers If the Chargers get into the playoffs get into the playoffs with Norv Turner leading the way again, we'd be impressed. If they do it with a record better than 8-8, we might be blown away. Still, they'll be no match for the Steelers, who love to run the ball, something the Chargers have no idea how to stop. Steelers 20, Chargers 13
Bengals @ Patriots We like what we see in Cincinnati, and this game would likely stay close due to the Bengals' solid all-around defense and their commitment to the ground game. However, we just can't see Tom Brady getting more rattled than Carson Palmer.
Giants forecast Big Blue skies

Remarkably, none of the Giants' heartbreaking losses this season has shaken the team's belief that they are still a true Super Bowl contender. And even though they're sliding into their bye week on a four-game losing streak after a 21-20 loss to the Chargers on Sunday, the Giants insisted there's still plenty of time for them to turn this crumbling season around.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New York Giants, Super Bowl, San Diego Chargers

Ignorance of Eagles Fans Shines On Day After Loss

They say ignorance is bliss, but in the circle of Eagles fans it's become more of an epidemic. This city used to be populated with the most knowledgeable of fans who could back up their beliefs with real football insight and nothing but a love for the Eagles. Whether they agreed or disagreed with the coaches or management, someone could always look forward to a well-informed discussion with an Eagles fan. Unfortunately, those days are long gone. The city has become populated with people who wear midnight green with more of a mob mentality than an actual love for the game and for their team. Don't get me wrong, the passion is there, and it's there in abundance. Unfortunately the knowledge of the game has been completely thrown out the window. When the Eagles are winning, the city is ready to put Andy Reid in the Hall of Fame and already have their Super Bowl parties planned. The Eagles are the best team in the league, and there's no one who will tell them otherwise. However, lose a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid, Donovan McNabb, Super Bowl
