Tampa Two Defense: A Dead Tradition

In 1996 Tony Dungy took over the much maligned Tampa Bay Buccuners franchise, bringing with him Monte Kiffin as a defensive coordinater. The results was one of the most explosive and dominating defenses of the era. Under Dungy and later Jon Gruden, the Tampa 2 defense took over the NFL in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Tampa Two, or the Cover Two defense, is a zone defense that is based around a bend but don't break idea. The zone defense allows defenders to keep everything in front of them and to prevent big plays. Short passes and short gains are a fact of life in the Cover 2 and the one thing that this defense cannot allow is yards after catch or after contact.
As a result, one of the basic skills of a linebacker or defensive back in the Tampa 2 is near perfect tackling. Another key aspect is closing speed, keeping short gains from turning into larger plays, and as a result the back seven of the defense are undersized by NFL standards.
The safeties split the field in half and take ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, Chicago Bears

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Returning to the Tampa-2? Players React

The Buccaneers' defense is apparently moving back to wards its older scheme, the one that made them famous—the Tampa 2. A version of the Cover 2 defense dreamt up by former Buc head coach Tony Dungy and longtime former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, the zone-based scheme leaves defensive linemen responsible for plugging one gap, linebackers allowed to run sideline to sideline and safeties split the deep halves of the field in half in an attempt to limit the chances and prevent big plays. Nicknamed the Tampa 2, the Cover 2 scheme requires for players to rely more on speed and athleticism than size and bulk. It is the system many current Bucs defenders, from tackle Chris Hovan to linebacker Geno Hayes, were brought here to play. Demoted coordinator Jim Bates, 63, installed what was supposed to be a blitz-heavy, man-coverage scheme that often asked for the linemen and linebackers to read and anticipate plays instead of simply crashing through the line to make a stop. "There's a reason ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris will call defensive plays for the Buccaneers after demoting defensive coordinator Jim Bates following a 1-9 start. The Bucs, who lost to New Orleans 38-7 Sunday, are 26th in the NFL in total defense, allowing just over 378 yards per game. They're last in rushing defense and have allowed 294 points, the second-highest total in the league.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raheem Morris, Jim Bates, New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Condition Now Official: FUBAR!

It is finally so very evident that One Buccaneer Place is a disaster.
Perhaps it fitting to put this one in military jargon.
Here are the three stages of confusion:
SNAFU: Situation Normal All F@#&*#d Up.
TARFU: Things Are Really F@#&*#d Up.
FUBAR: F#@*$d Up Beyond All Repair.
The DEFCON (Defense Condition) at One Buc Place is now officially FUBAR.
You can blame it all on Raheem Morris and Mark Dominic, coach and GM.
The OTAs and training camp were wasted.
This nonsensical "zone blocking" scheme for the offensive line didn't work.
There was a "quarterback derby" between two guys, one is gone (Luke McCown) and one is inactive weekly (Byron Leftwich). They are indicative of the failure to evaluate talent.
You know about the Jeff Jagodzinski farce and now Raheem Morris is finally taking over the position he should have been hired for in the first place—defensive coordinator.
This one and nine joke of a season gets more insane by the week. Are you convinced yet that Morris ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raheem Morris

Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Chaos, Jim Bates Demoted By Raheem Morris

Confusion on the defense has reigned supreme for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season and coach Raheem Morris finally threw in the towel on defensive coordinator Jim Bates.
Bates has been demoted by Morris according to reports in The St. Petersburg Times. Bates was informed of the decision by Morris Monday night.
Morris will retool the defense and return to the Tampa Two as the base defense.
The decision is indicative that Morris and general manager Mark Dominik made mistakes during their "hiring process." Former offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski was fired before the season started and now Bates will basically be breaking down film.
It's no secret that the Buccaneer defense has been horrible. It ranks 26th overall in the league and dead-last against the run.
Bates has been unable to adapt and improvise his defensive schemes to fit the existing personnel.
This latest bombshell is an indictment of the Morris-Dominik regime.
This season has been earmarked with poor decisions ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raheem Morris, Jim Bates, Mark Dominik, Jeff Jagodzinski

Tampa Bay Bucs- New Orleans Saints: Saints Get a Freebie, Blast Bucs

Sooner or later it was going to happen. It's happened to Drew Brees. It's happened to Peyton Manning. It's been happening to Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez, and Matt Stafford.
Josh Freeman had a horrible Sunday, accounting for four turnovers (three interceptions) in the Saints' 38-7 demolition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Freeman was inaccurate for the majority of the ballgame, missing several open receivers and throwing off the mark that led to costly turnovers—something you just can't do and hope to upset one of the best teams in the NFL.
The fumble bug raised its ugly head again for Josh, as instead of throwing the ball away or at least tucking it away, Freeman was hit from behind and fumbled for the sixth time in three games, setting up a third quarter New Orleans score that all but erased any thoughts the Bucs had of pulling off the upset.
It wasn't all on Freeman. In fact, Freeman gave the Bucs an early lead, leading them on an impressive 95-yard opening drive that culminated with ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, Josh Freeman, Drew Brees

New Orleans a Perfect 10: Saints Sink Buccaneers, 38-7

No Sedrick Ellis.
No Reggie Bush.
Both starting corners out.
No problem.
Tampa Bay took the ball 95 yards down the field and scored a touchdown on their first drive.
They got just 124 yards and were shut out the rest of the game.
The New Orleans Saints scored the final five touchdowns of the game in a 38-7 rout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Saints forced four turnovers and, even more importantly, committed none of their own.
New Orleans, prior to Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, had committed 13 turnovers in the past four games—seven alone by Drew Brees.
Brees was an efficient 19 of 29 passing for 187 yards and three touchdowns.
New Orleans held Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman to 17 of 33 passing and only 126 yards.

The Offensive line : For the first time in several weeks, Brees was not sacked. The line also paved the way for Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell to combine for 167 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.

Week 11 Point Spreads Predictions: Back The Bucs

I decided to switch it up this week and go with my predictions with the point spreads. My pick of the week is the Bucs going up against the Saints. The Bucs are +10.5 dogs and the Saints have been in close games back to back weeks.
The Bucs are starting to play competitive football with Josh Freeman as their starting quarterback, and every team going up against the Saints will want to end their undefeated streak. The Saints are banged up on offense with Reggie Bush and Lance Moore out and on defense. I'd back the Bucs this week.
  NO -10.5 @TB Prediction: NO 31 TB 24
  CLE +3 @DET
Prediction: CLE 7 DET 17
Both teams have been struggling and it's hard to back the Browns after getting shut out by the Ravens and struggling all year long on offense. The Lions have yet to have to have a break-out game against a weak defense, and this is the week we see Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith explode. Back the Lions.
    BUF +8.5 @JAX
Prediction: BUF 14 JAX 17
The Bills will be playing under a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

FOXBOROUGH - Derrick Burgess , the player the Patriots acquired to inject life into their pass rush, has a grand total of two sacks this year. One came in a Hail Mary situation at the end of a victory over Buffalo. The other came at the finish of the Tampa Bay blowout in London.

A person familiar with the decision says running back Reggie Bush and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis are not traveling with the New Orleans Saints for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Both players are expected to be back at practice next week, said the person, who requested anonymity because the team's injury report had not been officially updated.

Bush and Ellis have knee injuries.

Bush missed practice this week with swelling in his left knee and had been listed Friday as questionable.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Reggie Bush, Sedrick Ellis, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Bush held out of practice, questionable vs. Bucs

New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush has been held out of practice for the third straight day, and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay.

Bush came out of the St. Louis game with swelling and soreness in his left knee, which was surgically repaired twice in a three-month span a year ago.

Saints coach Sean Payton says Bush's knee is bruised and swollen. He says that happens with a knee that has had surgery.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Reggie Bush, St. Louis Rams, Sean Payton

Cincinnati Bengals Remember Bruce Gradkowski's Game-Winning Drive In '06

Despite making just 13 starts in his four-year career, Oakland Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski has recent success against the Cincinnati Bengals .
As a rookie in 2006, Gradkowski led the Bucs on a game-winning drive as he threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Clayton with 34 seconds left in the 14-13 win over the Bengals.
At first, the play was ruled incomplete as Clayton appeared to have fumbled before crossing the goal line. However, the replay showed he had control of the ball while crossing the plain, sending the Bengals to their second loss of the season.
That season, the Bengals finished the season 8-8 and fell one-game short of a possible wild-card berth. While it's difficult to apply the "what if" card in the NFL, the Bengals and their fans knew how different their season could have been had Gradkowski not led that game-winning drive.
Prior to the game, the Bengals were 3-1 and just one game behind the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North. While there were a few games ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Cincinnati Bengals, Bruce Gradkowski, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders

Sellers prefers to let actions speak for him

After word emerged about the locker-room altercation earlier this season between running back Clinton Portis and fullback Mike Sellers, some Redskins fans criticized Sellers's blocking on Internet message boards and sports-talk radio shows. During a 16-13 victory in Week 4 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Portis went to coaches in an effort to have Sellers demoted for what Portis deemed to be poor blocking. Apparently in siding with Portis, fans criticized Sellers for the team's unproductive running game to start the season, believing Portis would have been more effective if Sellers had blocked better. But many in the organization told me Sellers's blocking was not what had derailed the running game. Portis was not in top form to start the season and his lackadaisical attitude toward practice did not help. After watching Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright gain chunks of yards since Portis has been sidelined with a concussion, I

Dolphins RB Brown out for year with foot injury

Ronnie Brown's season has ended with an injury - again.

The Miami Dolphins' leading rusher was placed on injured reserve Wednesday because of a right foot injury suffered in Sunday's victory over Tampa Bay.

A fifth-year pro, Brown missed the final nine games of the 2007 season with a right knee injury.

The Dolphins had hoped Brown might be able to return this year but made the roster move after he was examined by a specialist.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Miami Dolphins, Ronnie Brown, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Miami Dolphins vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Random Observations

I haven't had the time or energy to do my observation videos from the Miami Dolphins' 25-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That being the case, I've compiled these observations from the game in text, which some of you might even prefer. Offense

Outside of his horrendous, nearly game-losing interception late, Chad Henne played pretty well against Tampa Bay. He didn't hold onto the ball too long as much as he had lately, and moved around a little better.
Also, as bad as that interception was, Henne was that much better on the final drive to get the Dolphins in field goal range. It's good for his psyche that he was able to rebound.
The Dolphins need to abandon the option they're trying to run with Pat White . That kind of offense will never succeed in the NFL.
Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams both ran the ball hard and well. Ricky can handle the load moving forward as long as Ronnie is out, but the Dolphins sure are going to miss Brown.
   Davone Bess had the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ronnie Brown, Charlie Anderson, Yeremiah Bell

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Stunner: Arron Sears Is Back!

So you think the lose-almost-every-game, quarterback-merry-go-round, lousy-defense-rebuilding, re-tooling season of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can't get any crazier?
Arron Sears is back!
The last we heard of the former offensive lineman, he was sequestered somewhere in Alabama and then was rumored to be seen in Tampa.
He will be seen, sooner or later. The Buccaneers reinstated Sears on Tuesday, according to official team news releases.
Speculation has been that Sears has suffered from depression or some other related problems. But now he's back.
General Manager Mark Dominik said the team had stayed "in close contact" with Sears throughout his absence.
No timetable has been set for his return to action.
Brown out for next Dolphins game, maybe longer

Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown will miss Thursday night's game at Carolina because of an injured right foot, and his status for the rest of the regular season is uncertain.

The Dolphins' leader rusher was to see a specialist for further evaluation, coach Tony Sparano said Tuesday. Brown was hurt in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay.

Ricky Williams will replace Brown and start for the first time this season.
Miami Dolphins Re-Sign LB J. D. Folsom to Practice Squad

The Miami Dolphins re-signed J. D. Folsom to their eight-man practice squad Saturday, one day after waiving the rookie linebacker. The Dolphins waived Folsom in order to promote practice squad tight end Kory Sperry, as starter Anthony Fasano was expected to miss the team's Week 10 against Tampa Bay with a hip injury. A seventh-round pick out of Weber State in 2009, Folsom spent the first seven weeks of the 2009 season on the Dolphins' practice squad before earning a promotion on Nov. 8 after tight end John Nalbone was waived. Folsom made his NFL debut that day, recording one tackle on special teams in a 27-17 loss to the New England Patriots. Folsom will resume his duties as a practice squad player, earning $5,200 per week and working on special teams and the scout team defense in practice. He could earn another promotion to the active roster for special teams purposes later in the season, and will almost certainly be brought back for training camp in 2010.
