Patriots-Jets: Keys to the Game

After a week of debate over "the call," the Patriots have another bitter rival to face this week.
The Jets, of course, handed this team a bitter loss in Week Two, meaning the Pats have extra incentive to focus this week.
Though the Patriots typically rebound the week after a loss, it would be a mistake to assume this game will be a rout. Though the Jets have struggled as of late (losing their last two games and five of their last six), they are still perfectly capable of making this meeting miserable for the Pats.
The following are the keys to the game:
Establish the run early. In Week Two, the Pats were only able to gain 83 yards on the ground, despite a respectable 4.2 yards a carry.
The Patriots must run to keep the Jets defense on its heels, rather than in attack mode. Using a passing-intensive scheme early would allow the Jets blitzers to tee off on Tom Brady, rather than worrying if they're running past a back.
Lawrence Maroney has been playing relatively well lately (or had ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick

NFL MVP Favorites Part One: The Overrated

This time of year, the chatter of who will likely take home the NFL's Most Valuable Player trophy begins to heat up.
By the end of the season, it has inevitably crescendoed into a raucous cacophony of "no, MY player's better!" and "your player's over-rated!" rants.
The funny thing is, by the time the award's actually given out, it's ironically an afterthought of sorts.
By that time, teams are deep in the playoff hunt. Home field advantage, sexy storylines and title games captivate more interest in the end.
At this juncture, however, the debate is in full swing with many intriguing twists and turns so far.
This is the first of a two-part list that breaks down all the usual suspects. The stars in today's slideshow are traditional favorites, yes.
But good numbers alone don't merit an MVP. The number one criteria of the award—"where would your team be WITHOUT you?"—bears much significance.
In addition, it should be noted that their inclusion in the "overrated" portion of the list does not ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne, Drew Brees, Adrian Peterson, Tom Brady

Five Reasons Not to Question Bill Belichick's Decision

Alright already. He made the call. Deal with it.
Whether you're a Patriots fan, a Colts fan, or none of the above, the majority of football lovers are questioning Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on 4th down with two yards to go on his own 28 yard line.
That raises the question: How far does the saying, "In Bill We Trust" go?
To some fans, that question shouldn't even be asked. With three Super Bowls and four AFC championships in the decade, the Patriots would not be where they are today without Belichick.
So, to put to rest any early rumors of ousting Belichick from the New England tundra, here are five reasons to stop nagging Belichick about his 4th quarter call:

  1) The Call Had Nothing to do With a Lack of Confidence in His Defense
Belichick-run teams have always had a trademark: defense first, everything else thereafter.
No matter his trust or distrust in his defensive bunch, he would've elected to go for it even with a Pro Bowl defense on his side. Why? The Brady bunch. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, New England Patriots, Tom Brady, Indianapolis Colts

Decade of the Quarterback? Why Passing in the NFL Is As Solid As Ever

Patriots? Colts? Steelers?
Brady? Manning? Roethlisberger?
Lost in much of the discussion over which team is the best of the decade is just how much more successful quarterbacks have been at passing the ball as the decade has worn on.
Rule changes, advances in medicine, and a change in the organizational philosophies of NFL teams have led to a league in which passing the football is as efficient as it has ever been.
The adage that "there's three things that can happen when you pass and two of them are bad" only applies to high school football these days, as NFL teams are finding it easier to complete their passes.
There are any number of ways to look at quarterback play statistically, but for the purposes of this article, I'll keep it simple and use a formula we're all familiar with: quarterback rating.
As I've written before, there are big problems with the system. For those not familiar who want a good breakdown of the formula, Wikipedia actually does a serviceable job . (I think my ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Otto Graham, Dan Marino, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Steve Young

Math Wasn't a Factor in Belichick's Fourth and Two Equation

Enough already. Give it up.
Put away your calculator, your abacus, and your ZUES computer system. Please, no more freakonomics , or statistics, or probabilities. Save your analytics , algorithms, and algebra equations for baseball season. They don't fit this situation.
Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on fourth and two on his own 28 wasn't a glimpse of mathematical genius, or statistical prowess. It wasn't even mildly intelligent. It was wrong, and there isn't a single equation that is going to make it right.
The problem with stats and probabilities is they are fun if you're playing fantasy football, but they're also about as dry and unemotional as a Belichick press conference.
Probability doesn't account for momentum swings, crowd noise, Peyton Manning, a blister on Tom Brady's finger, or a horrendous case of jock-itch. In the world of probabilities, Chris Simms has the same chance of converting a fourth down as Joe Montana.
But somehow, in the last few days football ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, New England Patriots

Kill Bill? The Fourth-and-2 Wasn't What Cost the Patriots

The Patriots should've won that game. They out gained the Colts by 70 yards. They controlled the ball for 10 minutes longer than the Colts.
They forced Manning and his vaunted offense to punt six times in the first half, and led by 17 with 14 minutes left in the game.
What do they have to show for it? A one point loss that everyone is talking about .

There are plenty of people who will say this is just a regular season loss, so it doesn't mean that much. But like Ron Burgundy, it's kind of a big deal .
The way the last two minutes panned out makes this game a huge deal. I don't have a problem with the 4th and 2 call that cost the Patriots the game. It's the mismanagement of the team on the infamous drive that aggravates me. Many sports pundits have an issue with Belichick going for it on 4th and 2. Believe it or not, the math slightly supports Bellicheck's decision.
More importantly, the Patriots had a 75% success rate against the Colts on 4th downs since 2000, including 4-4 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Indianapolis Colts

Bill Belichick is no stranger to controversial or unpopular decisions. He chose Tom Brady over Drew Bledsoe in 2001. In Super Bowl XXXVI, instead of kneeling on the ball with 1:30 left and no timeouts and playing for overtime, he let a second-year quarterback fire away and set up the winning field goal. He cut starting safety Lawyer Milloy five ...

Move Over Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer is Ready to Take Over

Protecting a quarterback's blind side is the key to a team having a good offense. Matt Light has had the job of protecting Tom Brady's blind side since being drafted by the Patriots in the 2001 draft.
Light has been great ever since, making the All-Rookie Team in 2001 and being a Pro Bowler in 2006 and 2007. His pretty good year was interrupted by an injury suffered against the Denver Broncos.
Then in steps Sebastian Vollmer. Had anyone heard of this guy before the season started? If not, you will certainly know his name by the end of the season. The Pats drafted Vollmer in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
Vollmer didn't even start playing football until he was 14 and didn't start to play tackle until his sophomore year at the University of Houston. He made an immediate impact though, making First Team All-Conference USA.
After being drafted by the Patriots, he wasn't expected to get much playing time since Light was already a solid player at left tackle. But Light's injury opened the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Matt Light, New England Patriots, Sebastian Vollmer, Tom Brady

Patriots-Colts: A Genius Call by Belichick?

I don't want to hear it from anyone trying to support Bill's decision to go for it on fourth down.
I don't want to hear about hindsight being 20/20.
What he did was stupid. Period.
The thought of him having more faith in his offense gaining two yards on fourth down than his defense keeping Peyton out of the end zone is ludicrous. The poor decision-making started even before he chose not to punt.
Kevin Faulk got 79 yards on 12 carries. Who gives a flying fart if he was stuffed on first down?
Keep the ball on the ground and burn that clock. Completing that pass on second down was the worst possible thing to happen since it gave coach the confidence to throw and still burn time or timeouts.
Third Down came along and instead of trying to pick up the first down on the ground, an incomplete pass stopped it. The only type of pass that should be thrown in this situation is a WR screen, a play that was working for them the entire night.
I understand that they are a spread offense and a passing ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, Indianapolis Colts, Kevin Faulk, Tom Brady

Should The Pats and Colts Break The Bank For Brady and Manning?

When speaking of the greatest players in the NFL today, there is no way either Tom Brady or Peyton Manning can be left out of the conversation. Love them, or hate them, no one can argue they are future first ballot Hall of Fame entrants.
Peyton Manning is on pace to earn most of the individual records for quarterbacks, while Tom Brady is compared to Joe Montana as the best ever.
Both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have one year remaining on their current contract, meaning after NEXT season, if they are not resigned by the Colts and Patriots, respectfully, they will become unrestricted free agents.
There is no way that is going to happen.
Both Brady and Manning are going to be their teams top priority this off season. With the large contracts being handed out to the class of 2004, Adam Schefter reports that both Manning and Brady are set to sign contracts in excess of $16.25 million per year.
The question is not, "are they worth the money?" My question is how long will they be worth the money? ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Indianapolis Colts, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, New England Patriots

Rivalry, [rahy-vuh l-ree]: the action, position, or relation of a rival or rivals; competition.
Sports are all about competition and between that competition you can always find rivalries. When the word rivalry is mentioned in the sports world we think of Red Sox vs. Yankees, Celtics vs. Lakers and over the past decade, Patriots vs. Colts.
That last one, Patriots vs. Colts will be renewed in a prime time showdown tonight.

Matchup of the Week: New England Patriots (6-2) at Indianapolis Colts (8-0)
Patriots vs. Colts has become the NFL's premiere rivalry over the past decade. It's not just because these two teams have been the most dominant and most consistent over the years or because they've been coached by two of the best in the game or even because their organizations are tops in sports, the real reason is because of two guys named Brady and Manning. You heard of them?
Of course you have.
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have clearly been the best two quarterbacks over the past ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, New England Patriots

One Upped: Orton "Out-Bradys" Tom Brady

So you say Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton is a "game manager," eh?
Take a look at these statistics from Sunday's 20-17 overtime win over the New England Patriots : 35-of-48, 330 yards and two touchdowns. I don't hold his one interception against him, because it was a desperation heave at the end of the first half.
If Orton is a "game manager," then so is Brett Favre , Drew Brees , John Elway, and, oh yeah, Tom Brady .
For one game at least, Orton played Brady-style football better than Brady himself. Orton led a remarkable 98-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 17 after the Broncos trailed 17-7 at halftime.
New England got the ball back with two minutes remaining in regulation. Many thought it was going to be another Brady comeback because he has become so masterful at bringing his team back late when the game is on the line.
Not this time.
First, the Broncos defense stopped the Patriots on crucial third downs late in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kyle Orton, New England Patriots, Tom Brady, Denver Broncos
