Defense prepares for Cowboys' attack

The Redskins gave up 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter of their Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos. Obviously, the defense must do a better job Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium. "Well the big plays come from [Dallas quarterback] Tony Romo," secondary coach Jerry Gray said. "He scrambles a lot, and does a lot of things to get guys open, and receivers are always working down the field. You see Miles Austin, all of the sudden he comes up with a 200-yard game because he works after the catch. It's not just, 'I'm going to beat you.' He actually works to get open, and he does a great job. That's really what you want to do when you've got a wide receiver like that." The Redskins' defense ranks No. 1 against the pass, giving up an average of 162.7 yards and

This year, Romo will see a new pass rush

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has taken a lot of heat for his poor performance late in the season and during the playoffs. But Romo sure knows how to extend plays, Coach Jim Zorn said. "It is just awful to have to cover longer than you really want to," Zorn said. "We've got to try to get to him and make him be concerned about" the pass rush. poll by twiigs.com The Redskins (3-6) are last in the NFC East and the Cowboys (6-3) are atop the division. For the Redskins to pull closer to the Cowboys, they must corral Romo in the pocket and end passing plays quickly. "When he extends, when he moves around, when he flinches the ball, it causes the secondary, the linebackers, to hesitate, to go, to move," Zorn said. "And then if he can pull it down and have time to hit somebody else,

Fletcher, defense work to stop Romo, big plays

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo often has succeeded at eluding pass rushers in the pocket. His ability to move well and give receivers more time to break free from coverage has resulted in many big plays for the Cowboys in Romo's four seasons as a starter. "He is a tough quarterback. He has great pocket awareness," middle linebacker London Fletcher said. "He has a great ability to extend plays, to buy time. He knows how to get everything out of a play. He's good at that." Although Romo struggled against pressure in the Cowboys' 17-7 loss in Week 10 to the Green Bay Packers, he is capable of making things happen even against an effective pass rush, players said. And the Cowboys have made players capable of helping Romo produce long gains. Also, the Redskins gave up 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter of their 27-17 victory

Orakpo, defense learn from Cowboys' game

The Green Bay Packers had five sacks and pressured quarterback Tony Romo throughout their 17-7 victory last week over the Dallas Cowboys. Redskins defensive end Andre Carter has eight sacks, rookie defensive end/strong-side linebacker Brian Orakpo has seven and Cowboys starting right tackle Marc Colombo is sidelined for the remainder of the season because of a broken left fibula. Romo has been sacked 22 times overall, third-year tackle Doug Free will make his first career start Sunday against the Redskins at Cowboys Stadium and Washington's improved pass rush has provided reason for optimism in a battle of NFC East rivals, players said. "We feel like our pass rush has been definitely a strength for us this season, especially lately," middle linebacker London Fletcher said. "Andre and Brian have been able to create a lot of pressure on the quarterback and also been able to get some sacks. The back end,

Charles Woodson helped Green Bay's defense finally play up to its potential against a big-time opponent, forcing two fumbles and picking off a pass by Tony Romo on the goal line in a 17-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. It wasn't a pretty win for the Packers (5-4), but it might have saved their season after back-to-back demoralizing losses.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Charles Woodson, Tony Romo

Following The Yankees' Lead, Dallas Cowboys Could Be On The Verge

Cowboy fans, can this really be the year?
I'm not going to totally jump the gun on how far the Dallas Cowboys will go this season. In recent years, the team has looked strong in stretches but have faltered at year's end before flaming out in the playoffs, assuming they got there.
Racing to a fast 6-2 record with winnable games coming up against Green Bay, Washington and Oakland, the Boys could be looking at a six game winning streak heading into the home stretch. December has been a disaster for quarterback Tony Romo, but so far he has performed at a surprisingly high level, with better focus without feeling the pressure from Terrell Owens to throw him the damn ball.
Can this really be the year?
If there is any possible way to hold out hope that this is the year, then look no further than this year's version of the New York Yankees. Similarities between the Bronx Bombers and America's Team are eerie:

both opened up new facilities this year
both have maligned superstars who have ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Dallas Cowboys, Tony Romo, Super Bowl

Dallas Cowboys: Despite December Struggles, Tony Romo Is Mr. November

Throughout his career, Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo has been criticized for the way he performs towards the end of the year. However, it may be time to award him the nickname of "Mr. November" with the type of play he's established during this month in Dallas over the last four seasons.
On November 5, 2006, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo made his second career start against the Washington Redskins. He completed 24-of-36 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns in a 22-19 loss.
Why was this game so significant for the seventh-year quarterback? This was the only time in Romo's career he lost a game during the month of November.
Despite all of the heat taken for his performance when the month of December rolls around, in which he has a combined record of 5-8 over his career, Romo has established himself as a clutch-performer in the month of November for the Cowboys.
Since losing to the Redskins in 2006, he has won 13 straight games in November, including two key victories over the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles

Tony Romo may be known for his shaky play late in the year but he's money in November. Romo has thrown 37 touchdowns in the month of November since 2006.
Top Ten NFC East Perfomers through Nine Weeks

Rivalries. Tradition. Hatred. (Expletive) you (expletive)-head.

These are words that most die hard NFL fans associate with one of the most historically intense and competitive divisions in the history of football: the NFC East.

The NFC East is so special because there really isn't one standout marquee rivalry. Some could argue Cowboys-Redskins, but are those games really any more intense than Giants-Eagles, or Eagles-Cowboys?

In a division that frequently doesn't have a losing team, a division that frequently sends three teams to the Super Bowl, there is absolutely no shortage of talent.

2009 is no different.

Without further ado, the top 10 performers in the NFC East through the first nine weeks of the 2009 season.
Attention! Attention! Roy Williams Is Not a Bust!

I repeat: Roy Williams is not a bust!
Anyone who watched the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday would see that Roy Williams is far from a bust, but rather an outstanding quality receiver.
He has not had a great year. He has 19 receptions for 324 yards and two touchdowns. He is the guy you don’t want on your fantasy team, but he is the guy I want on our Cowboys roster.
Passing is all about timing. If you don’t have it, you work on it, and it takes time to get it right.
The Romo-to-Williams passing combination has not been as explosive as the Romo-to-Owens combination that just lit up the NFL for three years with 34 touchdowns.
However, it has just been a working progress that showed me results last night.
Miles Austin was covered all night, and when that happened, Roy Williams had to step up and make plays to help win this critical ball game. And he did!
He had five catches for 75 yards and almost had a touchdown if he had not been interfered with by Asante Samuel, a penalty that was not ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Roy Williams, Dallas Cowboys, Miles Austin, Tony Romo

Week 10 Fantasy Football Versus: Coin Flip

After you've scoured the waiver wire , found nothing worth your time, and then failed to pull off the trade that may have rescued your team, what's left for you to do? Well, it's times like these where you have to suck it up and look within. Even the best fantasy owners with rosters loaded with talent can run into unlucky stretches of bad matchups for their players, ridiculous performances by opponents, or facing the highest scoring team every week. Regardless, it's up to you to do everything in your power to put the best team up against your opponent, and like it or not, sometimes it starts with pitting your own players against each other.
Here's a look at three positions with two players facing off, with only one earning the right to take a place in your starting lineup: Tony Romo , QB, DAL (@GB) vs. Brett Favre, QB, MIN (vs. DET) Romo threw his first pick in four weeks against the Philadephia Eagles, and connected with Miles Austin for his ninth touchdown during that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, LaDainian Tomlinson, Fantasy Football, Brett Favre, Tony Romo, Ray Rice, Calvin Johnson

Daily Haze: Larry Johnson out, Jamaal Charles in for Kansas City

After a flurry of off-the-field extracurricular activity got Larry Johnson suspended a few weeks ago, the Chiefs formally cut ties with the once-dominating running back yesterday.
Thanks for the memories, LJ.
I never owned Johnson in a competitive league as far as I can remember, but do have a fond memory of him due to his dominating stretch run of the 2004 season. Johnson got the call to start following a Priest Holmes injury and turned in five consecutive 20+ fantasy point weeks to finish the season.
Needless to say, I was not the Johnson owner and ended up losing near the end of that season as I watched the Johnson owner—Marc, who also writes here, by the way—win the fantasy championship.
Back to yesterday's news: With Johnson out of the way, Jamaal Charles now is the undisputed starting running back in Kansas City. The sledding is tough behind that make-shift offensive line, but he should get plenty of volume going forward.
In dynasty or deep keeper leagues, Kolby Smith is a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Kansas City Chiefs, Jamaal Charles, Larry Johnson, Tony Romo

Cowboys Ground Eagles, Take First Place in NFC East

The Dallas Cowboys went into the stadium where their 2008-09 season ended so horribly and were able to quiet those demons and the Philadelphia fans, as they beat the Eagles 20-16 to take sole possession of first place in the NFC East.
Tony Romo had another stellar game, going 21-of-34 for 307 yards and one TD.
Romo did throw an interception, ending his three-game streak of not throwing a pick, but didn't let the interception affect his play. Romo was able to find some chemistry with receiver Roy Williams, and he also hit Miles Austin for the game winner.
Romo targeted Williams seven times, and they hooked up five times for 75 yards. Patrick Crayton had a 64-yard reception that set up a field goal, and with eight minutes left Romo hit Austin for a 49-yard TD pass to make the score 20-13.
The Eagles made a 52-yard field goal on their next drive but never saw the ball again.
The Cowboys' running game wasn't great, but it was effective, as Marion Barber had 50 yards on 12 carries.

On this glorious Monday morning in Dallas, the morning after the biggest Cowboys win in two years, this enterprising entrepreneur is busy designing "Thank You" cards for the Cowboys fan too busy to write his own. The window for such a venture is very, very small, so I am wasting no time.
Here are a few of the offerings from the newly-formed Silver-and-Blue-Blood Hallmark Moment Press.

  To Andy Reid
Dear Coach Reid,
Thank you for angering the football gods, annoying the officials, and poking Philadelphia fans in their bloodshot eyes, waving red flags like a demented matador with a death wish, and kicking a useless field goal with precious little time left and no timeouts in your pocket.
PS: My brother thinks you have David Akers on your fantasy team. Is this true?

  To Victor Butler
Victor,
Thank you for making a play every single time you get an opportunity to do so (which is not very often, for some reason known only to Wade Phillips). Your shoestring tackle of Donovan ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Dallas Cowboys, Tony Romo, Victor Butler, Miles Austin, Roy Williams

In 'statement game,' Cowboys prove their toughness

PHILADELPHIA — The Cowboys said they were different. On Sunday night, they proved it.
The 20-16 victory over the Eagles did more than give the Cowboys (6-2) sole possession of first place in the NFC East. It let the Eagles (5-3) know the Cowboys are tougher and more poised than last season.
The Cowboys have overcome the demons of 2008, when their season ended with an embarrassing 44-6 loss to the Eagles in the regular-season finale. Dallas linebacker Keith Brooking was with the Falcons last season but knew how much this game meant to his teammates.

Miles Austin came up with another big catch for the Cowboys.
"This was a statement game, and guys were motivated," Brooking said. "You knocked me out of the playoffs, ended my season, humiliated me like that? I have a lot of pride. So yeah, I'm sure a lot of guys took that mentality."

Cowboys QB Tony Romo (21-for-34 passing, 307 yards, one touchdown, one interception) was steady and outplayed Philadelphia ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Tony Romo
